Premature rod bearing failure at 126,750. Dealer said there was extended warranty for this failure. Turns out that Hyundai denied this because they say Recall 953 was not done. This does not reflect what I show, I show this a Service Program and probably a notice does not get sent out. I have gotten an estimate for $7848.50 for engine replace. I do not agree with this decision since it is a know problem with multiple class action lawsuits.
All documents are attached as it is many separate incidents that ended knock from motor and minutes later, a piston shooting through the engine block which is what made the car inoperable
I am writing to request your assistance in enforcing the terms of the class action settlement and extended warranty coverage for my 2017 Hyundai Sonata (VIN: [XXX] ). Despite clear evidence of a defective Theta II engine, Hyundai Corporate has refused to authorize a full engine replacement unless the engine “blows” completely. This directly conflicts with the express terms of the “In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation” settlement, which requires Hyundai to cover any engine exhibiting failure‐mode symptoms. Below, I have summarized all relevant facts, diagnoses, and correspondence. I purchased this Sonata used from Oakes Kia (Kansas City, MO) in May 2023. At the time of purchase, the vehicle had 77,000 miles. To my knowledge, I am the third owner of this vehicle. Since I bought this car, I have followed the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule: All routine oil changes (every 5,000 miles, or sooner) at Oakes Kia, plus...
I purchased this car in 2018. Noticed it would be low on oil frequently by year one of having it I took in in for regular maintenance at the dealer by year 2 car began giving me more issues with oil and engine I have had the manifold replaced and other parts in the engine several times and keep running into the same issues and from what I found out I’m not the only one dealing with oil consumption issues I was told by the dealer this is a regular issue with this car and that Hyundai will not cover it I feel it’s very unfair to the consumer that they did not disclose this to me when I explained I needed a dependable vehicle because I had a disabled child I have put so much money in this vehicle I could have bought a new one by now
Engine seized on me, lurched forward, then engine light starting flashing and I could barely accelerate anymore. Had to go very slowly to make it home. My local autoshop says this is very common with Hyundai's and there was a recall for bad engines for this.
2017 Hyundai Sonata having severe oil consumption issue. Having to top off with a quart of oil every 500 miles. Was purchased last June and has been a nightmare since. We contacted Hyundai consumer affairs and they opened a case and made an appointment for us to go to a local Hyundai dealer. The dealership told us we didn’t qualify for oil consumption test be cause we are second owners and the vehicle had 62,000 miles on it. We did purchase an extended warranty when we bought the car but they won’t cover oil issue. Local mechanic won’t touch it and refers us to Hyundai dealer. Just getting so frustrated and worried about car safety and engine damage. I read on another sit that Hyundai issued an oil consumption recall in 2025 but our vehicle is not listed. Please help us.
The car went into limp mode activated by the knock sensor. Audible knocking noises were emitted. Hyundai dealership replaced knock sensor. Car drove 63 miles before knocking noise repeated and car went into limp mode. Hyundai dealership requested new engine as problem is covered by extended warranty for known issue. It has been declined by corporate office. Car is at dealership and unsafe to operate.
The 2017 hyundai sonata 2.4L excessively consumes oil. I constantly put oil in my car. My fear is that I will have a critical engine failure during commute and will be fully responsible for replacing the engine even though hyundai motors designed a poorly built engine. Every time I search Google about the make and model it is always hundreds of other hyundai sonata owners with the same problems and fears that their car will break down or have already had their engine replaced. I would like to see an investigation take place on the 2017 hyundai sonata 2.4L engine. It is poorly designed and consumes more than enough oil in a short amount of time to cause engine failure.
Engine burning oil like crazy never had to put so much in for any other car. Risk of engine lock without enough oil also sets of the knock sensor. Every time I get an oil change they let me know that I’ve burned most of my oil and that it’s low so I just started doing my own oil topping it off. Problem has been ongoing since I got the car.
I am writing to file a formal safety complaint regarding my 2017 Hyundai Sonata which suffered an unexpected engine seizure on January 22, 2025, while my daughter was driving. The incident occurred without warning and left her stranded in a hazardous location, putting her in immediate danger. This appears to be part of a wider, documented issue affecting Hyundai vehicles. My understanding is that engine failures—particularly in Sonata models—have been the subject of recalls and class action lawsuits. However, Hyundai Motor America has refused to replace or repurchase the vehicle. Instead, they replaced the engine with one that now carries less warranty coverage than the original (12,000 miles vs. 26,000 miles remaining). Since the engine replacement, the vehicle has presented new problems, and now needs a new battery after sitting on the lot for so long. Hyundai has failed to offer meaningful support, leaving my family without a reliable vehicle...
I am seeking a resolution to the concerning and potentially dangerous issues that I have experienced with my vehicle. I got it from Carvana Dec 2023 and only had it for a year, and I’ve only drove 19,000 miles on it before my engine cut off on me while on the highway. I was going 70 mph when the safety of my life was at risk. After, I tried to send it to the dealership, they let my car sit for a month before even looking at it, they couldn’t tell me because they let it die. My car was completely off. So i got no full diagnostic. I have personally endured the traumatic experience of my engine suffering catastrophic failure. Also, my vehicle was consuming oil at an alarming rate, necessitating frequent and costly refills. I would sometimes even go 500 miles before the due of an oil change...
My Hyundai Sonata sport had a Manufacturer defect causing oil consumption. When my engine starting having issues they replaced it for free. I got it back and the engine light came on so i called they ask me to bring it back and i did. They told me the code was a po326 powertrain control module or faulty knock sensor. They said the code was a history code and they cleared it out drove it and the light did not come back on. I picked it up drove it and the light came back on. I called they said bring back again and before it could get it back over there the transmission went into limp mode or safety mode. They said my transmission was gone and needed a a new one. $4385.44. I wasn't having any issues before the engine replacement. All other mechanics think something happened when the...
The check engine light light is on now giving code p200a I was driving and the center console shut off and the engine died I had to pull over and start the car again it started but the check engine light light is on now for a p200a I’ve looked it up and everything I can find says there is a recall but my car isn’t in it so what can I do I don’t want to cause a fire or an accident because my car messed up o. Me
This is the third time after 3 “repairs” that I have had my car at the dealer in less than a year. Car went into “limp” mode while driving down the highway causing car to stall and not go over 20 mph. First time they said it was a technical update needing done. Second time said low battery power causing issue so I purchased $300 battery from dealer and now showing cylinder 4 misfire and recommend replacing spark plugs and oil combustion testing due to having to add 3 quarts of oil every 230 miles due to excessive oil consumption. Dealer said this will not fix the issue however so why would I pay to have it done if it won’t fix the issue. Luckily these three incidents of engine power loss hasn’t caused me to have an accident but what If in 3 months and my engine loses power...
I was driving on highway when all of sudden my vehicle began to shake hard and lose power, every time I stepped on the accelerator the check engine light came on, this happened on [XXX] in Los Baños, CA. My safety was at risk as all other traffic was going past me including semi trucks as I was trying to find a safe place to pull over out of harms way, as I was doing this the car shut off completely before I could even pull over. I had to get the vehicle towed to my local dealership where they had it for almost 3 weeks now, only diagnostic I’ve had back was that it has 2 misfires, one in cylinder 2 and the other in cylinder 4, and that it has no compression in cylinder 2. They said it isn’t covered under warranty which I believe should be looked...
Unknown... I recently got an oil change and not even a week later my oil light came on. There's no leaks, I've been to midas several times and no leak was found. Was told to check to see if it had any recalls, my vin doesn't produce a recall but I know there's something wrong with my car.
My vehicle was purchased in 2018 and currently has 128,000 miles. I took it to the dealership because it was puttering and not holding pil. The dealership did some work on the vehicle. Furthermore, after that trip to the dealership, my car kept burning oil even after recent oil changes that I found myself constantly adding oil. I took it to another licensed mechanic who informed me after a tune up that my car is consistently burning oil. This was after I had a recent oil change. The engine is defective, hyundai knows they are defective and refuse to do anything about it.
Car has been burning oil since September of 2024. It’s burning 2 quarts of oil every 500 miles. The oil is burning out spark plugs and coils every 3 months. These engines need to be recall and Hyundai needs to be held accountable.
The contact owned a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while on travel, the contact stopped at a local gas station. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked and unoccupied, the contact was informed by the store attendant that the vehicle was on fire. The contact noticed the fire came from under the hood compartment and the vehicle was engulfed with flames. The contact stated an off-duty police officer and the store owner attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers, however, they were unsuccessful. The fire department was called, arrived on the scene, and extinguished the fire but the vehicle was already consumed by the fire. The vehicle and all properties in the vehicle were destroyed in the fire. The vehicle was towed to a local tow yard. The vehicle was condemned to total loss by the insurance company. A police report was filed. In addition, the contact...
Every few months my car’s engine struggles. It doesn’t start, or I have to try a few times. For whatever reason I need to get an oil change a lot more frequently than normal and I’ve been to the shop before and the shop tells me that my engine is recalled but it doesn’t say that on the website when I put my vin number in. Whenever the engine stops working again sometimes the AC doesn’t work and it almost put my dog’s life at risk once.
I can’t drive my car on the highway cause then it will shut off and say HEV system error and I have to shut my car off turn it back on then erase the code with my diagnostic tool. My oil light keeps popping up and whenever I slightly press on the gas pedal or go up a steep hill, it starts to rattle, been noticing my oil burns out fast and I have to replace it when it gets low.
I am filing this complaint regarding a significant safety concern with my 2017 Hyundai Sonata. Since around 65,000 miles, my vehicle has experienced excessive engine oil consumption. The issue has progressively worsened, and my car now has 126,000 miles. Despite undergoing an oil consumption test that confirmed the rapid depletion of oil, Hyundai and their dealerships have failed to provide a resolution. This defect requires me to add oil approximately every two weeks. The excessive oil consumption poses a potential safety hazard, as the engine could seize unexpectedly while driving due to insufficient oil levels. The risk of engine failure is further exacerbated by the lack of sufficient warnings from Hyundai regarding this known issue. This situation not only jeopardizes the safety of myself and my passengers but also other drivers on the road. I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate this matter, as it appears to be a widespread...
The makes a weird shutter noise when accelerating and won't crank over 60. Loses power when turning or when going uphill. Sometimes has problem starting. Enging light came on twice blinking, once I changed the battery it went off and was working fine. Now it's back on again after a few weeks. Plus my oil tank still comes on and I've just received and oil change. I just bought the car in August of this year, dealership sold to me with a faulty battery.
Driving home car just shut off still had power to steer and brake but no engine. Pulled it off the main road and it leaked oil but still no engine. Already had the dealer replace the intake manifold at my expense despite hyundai knowing the plastic lever inside fails. We were lucky the snowplow was going the opposite direction as the weather was horrible as we got closer to home. I have a dead car in my yard waiting to have a dealer look at it. We could have been killed due to fault of engine.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. Additionally, there was white smoke coming from the engine compartment and the exhaust. The contact retrieved DTC code: P0420 for spark plug failure. The spark plugs were replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was diagnosed with spark plugs and catalytic converter failure. The spark plugs were replaced. The contact stated that the spark plugs looked burned. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the catalytic converter was replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the vehicle had been consuming an excessive amount of engine oil for almost two years. The contact stated that engine oil was added every 600 miles of driving. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The dealer was...
The engine started knocking while I was driving around a lot of cars and while I was going to AutoZone to see why the check engine light was flashing on my car wouldn't accelerate and randomly started stopping and I was fearing for my life when I was going on the highway to go back home. For almost a year now I noticed the oil in my car started burning more and more like I would only drive 1k miles and it would already be done with, so I had to replace it. Hyundai knows this is a problem with this car because I called and asked them about the oil and told me specifically it's an engine problem once it starts knocking then you can come fix your car but want me to pay and fix the whole engine and work process.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that within a two week period she has add to add 2 quartz of oil in the engine though she has yet to observe an oil leak. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle has was not taken to a dealer in independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 161,000.
The drivers seat belt does not engage. The engine has been burning oil, misfiring, and even after thousands in repairs was returned to me by the dealership with continued misfiring. When returning the car back to the dealer service center days later after Hurricane Helene, the car continued to misfire and became so overheated the engine light was flashing. Upon calling for a tow, I attempted to raise the hood for the driver to locate the car, but the hood was so hot it burned my hand. The engine was so hot, I believe it was about to catch fire and would have had I not been able to pull over so quickly. Had I been driving on the Interstate, I have no doubt this car would have been on fire within minutes.
The contact owned a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed smoke was coming from the engine compartment. No warning light was illuminated. The contact exited the vehicle and discovered that the engine compartment was on fire. The vehicle was not occupied during the fire. The local Fire Department (Cuyahoga Heights Fire Department) came and extinguished the fire; a Fire Department report was filed. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was not drivable and was diagnosed as totaled. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,500.
The car has been experiencing oil consumption issues for the past 15k miles and it's getting worse hyundai says .y vin isn't under recall and they can't help me. My mechanic says my oil consumption is high and is concerned about potential engine failure. I have to add oil every 500 miles. The 2.4l engine has had major issues but Hyundai will not expand the recall. My mechanic has seen issues like this but Hyundai won't do anything. I have friends with engine failures in similar Hyundai models. This has been going on for about a year when I had mileages in the 77k range. I now have 99k and the oil consumption is getting worse. I am very easy on this car and always do full synthetic changes at the Hyundai recommended intervals for the severe driving schedule. I've never had a car costume anything close to the amount...
The engine is losing oil at a much higher rate, causing a knocking sound. Not accelerating at it should without the sound getting louder and hesitating. This vehicle has been inspected by a licensing mechanic ( Goodyear). The check engine lights and multiple codes have appeared while driving for about the last 4-5 months.
Motor burning oil with no leaks causing it to need replaced, with out any reasoning.
Excessive or consumption. Purchase a car three weeks later car started misfiring I was able to get the car to a mechanic shop. I was told that the car needed a tuneup, spark plugs and ignition call was changed mechanic noticed oil on top of the engine and advise me to get an engine gasket. Gasket was replaced 2 weeks later oil light comes on I added 5 quart of oil the light goes off I notified the mechanic again was able to get the car in the shop took mechanic replaced the gasket week later oil light was flickering took the car to have oil change. There was no oil in the car, three weeks later oil light flickering again checked oil it was empty I added five more quarts to the car and took the car back to the back the mechanic one he inspected it he informed...
I have had many problems with my car since 1st day of purchase timing belt oilpans valve cover gasket burning excessive oil caliper brake hose last few events I have experienced my ABS light coming on in the car stop moving while am in traffic very dangerous I work for the hospice reserve one day while driving the car started shaking compulsive and the check engine light came on I was informed oil was leaking onto my spark plug and engine was going out I experienced extreme hot air inside the car coming out vents back firing etc my warranty in finical company seems to be ripping me off more concerned about money I have reported all these problems to them the past 13-14 months i was suppose to hear back from lisa warranty about this problem this past week no contact I reached out to Hyundai Corporation after visiting...
Vehicle is burning oil. Have been using fully synthetic oil at regular 3000 miles. And have been increasing “burned” more oil before each oil change. Valvoline Instant Oil Change is the shop I’ve been going to for my oil serviced maintenance. My last visit I had 1 quart of oil left in my engine.
In early June 2024 while driving 65 MPH vehicle started shaking, engine and oil light came on, losing power, noisy and only would go 50 MPH max. When destination reached, checked oil level (was low) added oil.Took the vehicle to auto repair shop. Review showed a misfire in cylinder #2 with plug oil fouled and recommended new engine. The car was taken to the Hyundai dealer who performed various diag. procedures via communicating with their Techline who ended up rejecting the request to replace the engine due to the milage (136K) being out of warranty. They would replace engine if the connecting rod bearings had wear or damage. Hyundai national consumer affairs contact given for the case refuses to listen to any information given and only states vehicle is out of warranty. Hyundai knows this engine has manufacturing issues causing them to wear out prematurely including excessive oil consumption. They...
I have to add a quart of oil to car a day tul the motor blew
Engine is burning a lot of oil. Having to get frequent oil changes due to the engine burning oil.
The car is burning through oil at an excecated rate. This is a well-known issue with this make and model. The dealer said they fixed the problem, and they did not. This engine needs to be replaced. It was inspected by a mechanic not affiliated with Hyundai. Hyundai has refused to replace the engine. This should be covered by the 15 year/ 150,00 engine warranty. This engine could seize up at any time. It is a hazard to be driving. The driver is an 80-year woman. She needs help.
Bought a car. In couple days check engine light came on, it was blinking and car was put on limp mode, rpm between 1800-2000, speed 60-62 mph. Went to dealership they did full diagnostics, told that they are going to submit to Hyundai to replace engine at their cost. Hyundai came back that they want to replace knock sensor and then see what’s gonna happen. I replaced and was told that i have to pay even though there is a recall on Knock sensors. They replaced the sensor which was over 600$. And the problem came back in less than 36 hours. Now the vehichle is back again at the dealership and they gonna do diagnostics again. Which is ~200$. I need to help this resolved as i’m only being ripped off with no solution. The vin says it doesn’t have any recalls, but vehichle is experiencing exactly what’s on...
My engine burns oil like crazy. At least 1 qt every 1,000 miles or less. Took to dealership and was given a hard time about it having an issue. Now my power steering light keeps randomly coming on. I'll feel the steering start to get hard to steer. Thought I needed belts so I replaced both serpentine & water pump belt but it still happens. When my power steering light comes on and steering wheel locks up, I have to put the car in park & rev the engine to get the light to turn off. Mechanics said all pulleys are in good shape so not sure what's doing it. My lights also start to flicker when power steering light comes on. I have a new altenator and battery so it's not caused from that. I have no idea what's causing it but it's extremely dangerous!!
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle made an abnormally loud sound while idling. The contact stated that while accelerating from a complete stop, the vehicle was significantly sluggish. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the camshaft position sensor was replaced several times; however, the failure persisted. The mechanic diagnosed the vehicle with internal engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
They car has high oil consumption. It only has 70,000 miles on it. It should not use a quart of oil or more every 1000 miles. Need to be put on a recall. Engine just like people have said about 115000 miles or more your engine will possibly blow,or sieze up. No car should have that much oil consumption. I change or have my oil change every 3000 miles or close.
The vehicle itself shakes when accelerating and will start to fail once 60mph is hit. It will also cut out when left turns are made...I have met 4 people with the exact same issues who received recalls but I am not sure why my car is not included. I was almost rear ended on the highway by a semi with my pregnant wife and 4 year old son in the car because of the engine failure.
To whom it may concern, I would like to inform you that I have been experiencing engine power loss and oil evaporation from my Sonata. In fact, I took the vehicle for an oil change in April 26, 2024 and by August 1, 2024, my car was not accelarating and the dashboard was completely illuminated with the engine, air bags and suspension lights. Upon inspection of engine oil dipstick, I was made aware that my oil was missing (evaporated) without any visual undercarriage drips. Therefore, I added 4 qts of synthetic oil to my car recently replaced oil and the car continued without power. Upon connecting a vehicle code reader, it was reported that a spark plug was malfunctioning and I continue with its replacement. To date the vehicle continues to have engine loss of power episodes. Can someone please help as I do not want to die in this...
I was driving the vehicle and it of no where the hybrid warming triangle comes up and I had to pull over. The car went in creep mode and then rpm and sped was capped.
Me along with thousands of others are experiencing the “excessive oil consumption” issue. Hyundai is doing nothing except making us pay tons of money for testing when they already know what the issue is and is refusing to do anything. Enough is enough. I can’t afford a new car nor should I be forced into buying one. The dealerships have been instructed by Hyundai USA not to admit negligence or helping g the car owners.
I had the engine replaced in Feb of 2024 which was covered by the engine replacement recall. In May of 2024 I started having issues with my check engine light flashing on then off. The engine will lose power briefly during this time and the engine shakes. It feels like you are going to lose control of the vehicle when this happens. This has happened approximately 3 times at freeway speeds and a total of approximately 15 times total. I have taken it to the dealership 3 times for this issue. They made us pay for spark plugs that were fine when the engine was replaced (3800 miles was driven between the engine replacement and this issue starting). The dealership has now had the vehicle since the middle of May said they can’t recreate the problem but are saying it is a fuel pump. This was also fine when the...
Apparently there has been a leak in the engine and was not retaining any oil. We’ve tried to fixed it but it wasn’t fixed properly. My safety and others were at risk by the car shutting down at any moment. I have not taken it to the dealer yet. I am willing to do an inspection at a dealership for a better understanding on the issue.Check engine light came on about a month ago and I kept trying to fix it but check engine light is still there.
