1999 DODGE DURANGO---WHILE OUT DRIVING DURING THE HOTTER MONTHS, THE TRUCK WOULD JUST SHUT DOWN WHILE I WAS DRIVING. THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING, THE STEERING WHEEL STOPPED WORKING AND THE ODOMETER READ "NO BUS". WHEN I FINALLY STOPPED THE CAR BY RUNNING INTO A CURB, IT WOULD NOT START FOR ANOTHER 30 MINUTES. FINALLY GOT IT STARTED AND TWO MILES DOWN THE ROAD, IT HAPPENED AGAIN. AFTER TALKING TO OTHER DURANGO OWNERS, I WAS DIRECTED TO CHANGE THE PCM. WELL THAT IS A $1000.00 JOB. IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THE PCM BOX OVER HEATS BECAUSE OF WHERE IT IS PLACED UNDER THE HOOD. THAT SECTION WHERE THE PCM BOX IS IS NOT RECEIVING ANY AIR FLOW TO KEEP IT COOL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES WOULD FAIL SPORADICALLY. THE CONTACT ALSO OBSERVED THAT THE DIGITAL ODOMETER WOULD READ "NO BUS". THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT THE ECM WAS DEFECTIVE. THE ECM WAS REPLACED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 155,000 AND THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.

ALL OF A SUDDEN ONE DAY WHEN WE HAD A HEAT WAVE, OUR 1999 DODGE DURANGO DECIDED TO JUST STALL OUT WHEN HE WAS IN THE FAST LANE ON THE FREEWAY AND ALMOST CAUSED HIM TO GET REAR ENDED AND ANOTHER TIME FOR AN ACCIDENT TO ALMOST OCCUR. THIS HAPPENED WITH NO NOTICE AT ALL. THEN, THREE OTHER TIMES IT STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AFTER PICKING OUR KIDS UP JUST TRYING TO GET HOME. THIS IS SO DANGEROUS AND DODGE SAYS ITS A PROBLEM WITH THE PCM. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO IMMEDIATELY RESTART THE VEHICLE AND STARTED THAT SPORADICALLY; IT WOULD TAKE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AFTER ON HOUR BEFORE THE VEHICLE WOULD RESTART. BUT I GOT IT FIXED. THE CONTACT RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE UPPER CONTROL ARM ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. HOWEVER, HE CONTINUES TO HEAR THE CLUNKING AND CREAKING SOUND. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 51,800 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 114. THE UPPER BALL JOINT WAS BAD AND THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE STAYED ENGAGED. THE ENGINE PINGED A LOT. UPDATED 11/06/07.

IN THE LAST 4 YRS I HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE 2XS @$2500 PER EPISODE. DESPITE REGULAR OIL CHANGES, THE OIL PUMP IS THE FIRST TO GO. I HAVE REPAIR MEN LOOK AT ME LIKE I DO NOT CHANGE THE OIL BECAUSE THE OIL IS BURNT TO THE PUMP. THEY HAVE TO CLEAN THE OIL TRAP AND REPLACE PARTS. THEN LESS THEN 3 MONTHS LATER, THAT ENGINE GOES. I END UP HAVING TO REPLACE THE WHOLE ENGINE. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS AT 51,000 MILE. I CONTACTED THAT COMPANY AND THEY SEND "SORRY, YOU'RE PAST THE WARRANTY" NEXT, IT HAPPENED AT 75,000 MILES. AND, ON THE SECOND EXPERIENCE, I HAD TO REPLACE THE OIL PUMP A 2ND TIME W/IN 3 MONTHS BECAUSE WHEN THE TECHNICIANS STARTED MY VEHICLE AND THE BURNT-TYPE OIL IN THE OIL TRAP WENT BACK INTO THE ENGINE CLOGGING THE PUMP. THUS, THEY MADE ME PAY...

DT: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING HEARD A KNOCK IN THE ENGINE. A LOCAL MECHANIC FOUND THE ENGINE THREW A ROD. AS A RESULT, IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE, TIE ROD, AND SERPENTINE BELT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALERSHIP, AND THEY STATE IT NEEDED A NEW ROD AND CRANKSHAFT. THE MANUFACTURER INSTRUCTED THE DEALERSHIP TO TAKE THE ENGINE APART TO LOCATE THE INTERNAL PROBLEMS. THIS HAS NOT BEEN DONE AT THIS TIME, AND NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE. *AK
DT: THE CONSUMER KEPT UP THE MAINTENANCE ON THE VEHICLE. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY A THROUGH ROD ENTERED THE OIL PAN AND IT DESTROYED THE ENGINE. THERE WAS SLUG BUILT UP IN THE BOTTOM OF THE OIL PAN THAT CAUSED THE PUMP TO FAIL. THERE WAS NO FOR WARNING, BUT ONE COULD HEAR METAL AGAINST METAL GRINDING. OIL LIGHT DID NOT COME ON. SPOKE WITH THE DEALER AND CHRYSLER, AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE WARRANTY EXPIRED. THIS HAPPENED ON JUNE 5, 2005. DODGE DURANGO 1999 BALL JOINTS FAILURE. IT HAS SAME PROBLEM AS 2000 AND UP MODELS. THE CONSUMER WANTS TO KNOW WHY THE MANUFACTURER EXCLUDED THE 1999 MODEL. *BF *NM THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD HAD GONE BAD AND WAS REPLACED, THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW WAS INOPERATIVE AND WAS REPLACED THREE TIMES, AND THE A/C HAD GONE OUT. THE CONSUMER REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT. *SC THE ENGINE HAD A PING SOUND AND WAS REPAIRED 4 TIMES BUT STILL PINGING. *TC
THE DRIVER NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE STARTED JERKING UNCONTROLLABLY AND HESITATING WITHOUT WARNING. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND PULLED OVER. THEN, THE VEHICLE STALLED. DRIVER TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE FOR TEN MINUTES, AND THEN RESTARTED. FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN. DRIVER TRIED TO RESTART VEHICLE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. DRIVER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. DUE TO SLUDGE BUILD UP. *AK
I OWN A 1999 DODGE DURANGO. I AM ABOUT TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE DRIVER'S SIDE UPPER BALL JOINT. I STARTED HEARING A NOISE ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I AM NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE RESEARCHED SEVERAL WEBSITES AND THERE ARE 100 OF 1999 DURANGOS THAT ARE HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE MY ENGINE. *AK
MOTOR, IGNITION, TIE RODS, BRAKES. HEATER/AIR HAVE HAD HARDLY NO HEAT OR A/C FOR THE LAST 4 YEARS.. HAVE REPLACED EVERYTHING FROM FAN, BLOWER, COOLING, WATER PUMP, HEATER CORE ETC. STILL BACK IN THE SHOP ON 12-28-04 GOT BACK TODAY 01-01-05 AND STILL NO HEAT DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT. *JB
AT 41000 MILES MY 1999 DURANGO 5.9L EXPERIENCED SPARK KNOCK AND HEAVY OIL CONSUMPTION. OIL CHANGED AT EVERY 3000 MILES. CALLED CHRYSLER FOR HELP. THEY SAID TOO OLD AND DID NOT OFFER ANY HELP. I REPLACED ALL THE VALVE SEALS. DID NOT FIX. REPLACED THE PLENUM GASKET AS STATED BY THE TECHNICAL BULLETIN. DID NOT FIX. FINALLY, TORE DOWN ENGINE AND FOUND A BROKEN OIL RING ON #8 CYLINDER. REPLACED ALL RINGS AND BEARINGS. FINALLY FIXED ALL AT MY COST. CHRYSLER DID NOT OFFER HELP. ONLY ONE THING TO SAY TO CHRYSLER, YOU HAVE ONE LESS CUSTOMER. *AK
1999 DODGE DURANGO ENGINE CEASES ALONG WITH BALL JOINT PROBLEMS. I HAD TO HAVE MY ENGINE REPLACED IN THE 5 YRS THAT I HAVE OWNED IT TWICE! WHILE DRIVING CHECK ENGINE AND ABS LIGHTS CAME ON. ALL THE GAUGES DID NOT WORK. VEHICLE SHUT DOWN. AFTER PULLING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD VEHICLE WOULD NOT START FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. DRIVER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND PULLED OVER. THEN, VEHICLE STALLED. CONSUMER TRIED TO RESTART VEHICLE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. OIL CONSUMPTION WAS IN EXCESS AFTER OIL CHANGE. CHANGED OIL AND CHECKED IT AFTER APPROXIMATELY 400 MILES AND FOUND IT WAS A QUART LOW. WATCHED IT CLOSE AND IT WAS CONSUMING OIL FAST. TOOK IT TO DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE INTAKE MANIFOLD SEAL/GASKET WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. CALLED A MECHANIC AND HE TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH THE DURANGO, HE DID ONE EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS! EVEN THE DEALER MECHANICS SAYS THEY SAW THIS QUIET OFTEN. ONE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THE SEALS WERE MADE OUT OF A PAPER LIKE MATERIAL BUT NOW USED METAL TYPE SO THE PROBLEM WILL NOT RECUR! THIS IS A KNOW DEFECT IN THIS ENGINE. THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS OF THIS NATURE WHEN I SEARCHED ON LINE. THE COST IS $675.00 + TAX. I FEEL I SHOULD BE HELPED WITH THIS KNOW ENGINEERING DEFECT. THIS IS A VERY COSTLY...
WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 70 MPH I HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM UNDER MY 1999 DURANGO, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL FIRESTONE, THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE DRIVE SHAFT HAD FELL FROM IT'S HOUSING, SO I THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP, COTTMAN. THE SHOP INFORMED ME OF THE FOLLOWING, THE YOKE AND THE BOLT THAT RETAINED THE DRIVE SHAFT IN THE TRANSFER CASE HAD BROKEN OFF SOME HOW, DUE TO THIS OCCURRENCE, THE TRANSFER CASE WAS DAMAGED, BECAUSE ALL OF THE OIL LEAKED OUT. ALSO IN 2003, HAD TO HAVE THE BALL JOINTS REPLACE AND, ALSO THE ENGINE HEAD BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS BURNING TO MUCH OIL AND DAMAGE THE HEADS.*JB

PURCHSED A 1999 DODGE DURANGO IN FALL OF 1998. WHEN TRUCK WAS TWO YEARS OLD, OIL PRESSURE GUAGE WENT TO ZERO REPEATEDLY. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP. ON ONE OCCASION, TRUCK ABRUPTLY QUIT WHILE I WAS GOING DOWN A HILL. KIND OF A SCARY EXPERIENCE! THE SHOP REPLACED A FUEL PUMP. ON FEB. 28.2004, TRUCK'S OIL PRESSURE GUAGE WENT TO ZERO, A LOUD NOISE WAS HEARD, AND TRUCK,S ENGINE QUIT.(WHILE I WAS TRAVELING AT 60 MPH.) ENGINE IS HISTORY. MY TRUCK NOW...
BALL JOINTS AND STEERING KNUCKLE REPLACED AT A COST OF $1200 + WITH ONLY 58000 MILES ON IT AT THAT TIME. NOW THE OIL PRESSURE IS FLUCTUATING WILDLY WHICH COULD BE AN INDICATION OF PREMATURE ENGINE FAILURE. VEHICLE NOW HAS APPROX 72000 MILES ON IT NOW. *JB
I PURCHASED MY 1999 DURANGO IN MARCH 2001. IN DEC 2003 I HAD TO GET THE DRIVESHAFT REBUILT. THE VELOCITY JOINT HAD WORN OUT. THEN IN JAN '04 I WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 65MPH ON AN INTERSTATE JUST OUTSIDE OF TOWN. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I STARTED TO HERE A KNOCKING SOUND ALONG WITH FEELING LIKE THERE WAS A CYLINDER DOWN.
