THE PIN THAT GOES INTO THE SPINDLE ON THE 1999 DODGE DURANGO SEEMS TO HAVE SOME HUGE PROBLEM, WHICH CAN CAUSE A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE TO ITS' DRIVERS. I HAVE READ A NUMBER OF OWNERS' COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME PROBLEM FOR THIS YEAR OF VEHICLE. WE TOOK OURS LUCKILY IN TO GET A BRAKE JOB BEFORE MY BRAKE FELL OFF AND COULD HAVE CAUSED ME TO WRECK. THE PIN WAS EASILY PULLED OUT AND THE THREADING WAS GONE. NO NEARBY JUNKYARDS HAVE A SPINDLE FOR MY 4X4 1999 DODGE DURANGO, THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT AS SOON AS THEY GET THEM IN, SOMEONE COMES TO GET IT. THIS SOUNDS LIKE IT SHOULD BE A RECALLED ITEM. HOW DOES A PIN FALL OUT. WE WILL HAVE TO GET NEW SPINDLES AND TO BUY THEM FROM THE DEALERSHIP IT IS $600 EACH. ALL BECAUSE A FAULTY PIN. *TR

CONTROL ARMS UPPER DEFECTIVE ON DODGE DURANGO 4X4 MAKES LOUD POPPING SOUND LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, HAD TO REPLACE BOTH UPPER CONTROL ARMS LEFT AND RIGHT AND REPLACE ALL BALL JOINTS DUE TO WHAT LOOKS LIKE SHREDDING AND SHEARING. *TR
STEERING PROBLEMS RELATED TO LINKAGE AFFECTED BY BRAKE RESIVOIR LEAKAGE ONTO LINKAGE TO THE GEAR BOX. FLUID ATE RUBBER OFF OF THE "JOINTS" THAT LOOK TO BE LIKE THAT OF A "U-JOINT." THE FIRST TIME WAS A SAFETY ISSUE INVOLVING AN "OVERSTEER" SITUATION AND THE UNDERLYING CONDITION WAS NOT EXPLAINED OR REPAIRED. THE LINKAGE WAS REPLACED. ONE YEAR OR SO LATER THE DURANGO BEGAN TO REPEAT THE ABOVE SITUATION ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS OF OVER 65 MILES PER HOUR. AGAIN THE LINKAGE WAS REPLACED AND THE MASTER CYLINDER {NOT INCLUDING THE RESIVOIR} WAS REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE DUE TO THE AGE OF MY VEHICLE {OR LACK OF WARRANTY}. THE PROBLEM STILL EXSISTS BECAUSE I HAVE NO JOB TO PAY FOR REPAIRS OR A DIFFERENT VEHICLE. HAD UNEVEN WEAR AFTER I HAD PUT NEW TIRES ON WITH A FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT. BOTH FRONT WHEELS ARE WEARING ON THE INSIDE SO I HAD IT EVALUATED BY A DEALERSHIP WHICH I WAS INFORMED THAT I WOULD NEED NEW BALL JOINTS AND TIE RODS AT A PRICE OF $2,200.00. AFTER HAVING THIS FIXED I STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS, SO I TOOK IT BACK AND THEY SAID THAT I WOULD NEED NEW A ARMS FOR ANOTHER $1,800.00. THE VEHICLE IS NOT EVEN WORTH FIXING. *TR

YOUR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 04V596000 CLEARLY STATES THIS PROBLEM. SINCE YOU DIDN'T INCLUDE THE 1999 DODGE DURANGO'S IN THE RECALL I REPLACED THE BALL JOINTS MYSELF. USING THE APPROPRIATE STEPS I REPLACED THE BAD SQUEAKY, CLUNKING BALL JOINTS WITH NEW MOOG BALL JOINTS. AFTER ABOUT 3 MONTHS THE FRONT END OF MY DURANGO SOUNDED AS IF IT WERE GOING TO FALL OFF. I OWN A 1999 DODGE DURANGO, AND LIKE MANY, ALMOST SCARY AMOUNTS OF OTHER DODGE CUSTOMERS, AM HAVING NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE WHICH PROVIDE EXTREME SAFETY HAZARDS TO THE DRIVERS AND OCCUPANTS. BALL JOINTS, BUSHINGS, CONTROL ARM, WHEEL BEARINGS FAILED. FRONT WHEELS HAD THREE-FOUR INCHES OF PLAY. WHEN THEY JACKED UP VEHICLE TO CHANGE TIRES THEY SAID THEY DID NOT KNOW WHY TIRES HAD NOT ALREADY FALLEN OFF. I COMMUTE ON HIGHWAY EVERY DAY AND OFTEN HAVE MY CHILDREN IN THE TRUCK. I HAVE HAD POPING NOISES COMING FROM THE FRONT END FOR QUITE A WHILE, AND HAVE REPORTED IT MY DEALER WHO WAS "UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM".*AK

ON 3/31/2004 WE HAD VEHICLE CHECKED AGAIN AND WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE LEFT SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARE WAS WORN AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN SOON. I HAVE RECEIPTS AND QUOTES FROM DEALERSHIP AND WILL BE HAPPY TO SUBMIT COPIES. *JB
TOO MANY OWNERS SEEM TO BE UNIFORMED OF THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE FRONT-END DESIGN FLAW OF THE DODGE DURANGO. NEEDING UPPER AND/OR LOWER BALL JOINTS AND CONTROL ARM REPLACEMENTS AT 50K OR LESS SHOULD NOT BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CUSTOMER. THE MAIN ISSUE LIES IN THE FACT THAT THIS FLAW REQUIRES THE CUSTOMER TO PAY FOR THE FIXES WITHOUT ANY CHANGE IN DESIGN SO THE NEED FOR FUTURE REPLACEMENT FALLS ON THE CONSUMER IN LESS THAN 50K MILES AGAIN! FRONT SUSPENSION MAKING POPPING SOUNDS WHEN TURNING...RELATED TO ONGOING NHTSA INVESTIGATION....WOULD LIKE RECALL TO REPLACE WORN PARTS...THIS IS NOT NORMAL WEAR....MANUFACTURER SHOULD REPAIR AT NO CHARGE TO OWNER.
THE FRONT END OF MY 1999 DODGE DURANGO STARTED MAKING NOISES AROUND 50,000 MILES. I CARRIED IT TO A DODGE DEALER WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE BALL JOINTS AND THE FRONT SUSPENSION BUSHINGS WERE WORN AND REQUIRED REPLACING. THEY FURTHER STATED THE REASON WAS THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO LUBRICATE THE JOINTS. THE COSTTO REPLACE IS $800. THIS IS TO SOON FOR THIS TO BE WEARING OUT.
WHILE TURNING CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
THE FRONT SUSPENSION BALL JOINTS AND TIE RODS ON MY DODGE DURANGO 1999 ARE WORN OUT PREMATURELY. OCCASIONALLY WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED, THE FRONT SUSPENSION MAKES A POPPING NOISE.*AK
1)FRONT BRAKES LOCKED UP,CAUSING BRAKE PAD TO BREAK DAMAGING ROTORS. 2)NOISE IN FRONT END,LIFT UP FRONT TO CHECK IT OUT ONLY TO FIND WHEEL READY TO FALL OFF.WHEEL BEARINGS SHOT. 3)TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER TO GET WHEEL BEARING FIXED,WAS TOLD ALONG WITH THE WHEEL BEARINGS THAT THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS ARE SHOT AGAIN. 4)TO TOP IT ALL OFF THE DEALER TOLD ME I NEED ALL UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS AND THE FRONT END ALIGNMENT IF I WANT TO KEEP THE FRONT END ON THE VEHICLE. *AK
THE 1999 DODGE DURANGO WAS PURCHASED FROM SOUTH OAK DODGE IN SOUTH HOLLAND, ILL. IT WAS PURCHASED AS A DEMO WITH A FEW THOUSAND MILES ON IT. SINCE THAT TIME I HAVE RETURNED TO THE DEALER ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT OCCASIONS FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND FILTER AND TO REPORT SQUEAKING IN THE LEFT FRONT TIRE. I WAS TOLD THAT IT JUST NEEDED LUBRICATION. EACH TIME AFTER CHANGING MY OIL THEY WOULD LUBRICATE THE WHEELS. I ALSO EXPLAINED THAT THE NOISE WAS WORSE WHEN I TURNED THE CORNER AND IF I HAD TO USE THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE IT WAS DIFFICULT TO TURN. I ALSO EXPLAINED THAT THE TIRES WERE WORN ON THE INSIDE AND ON OCCASION IT LOOKED LIKE THE LEFT FRONT TIRE WAS GOING TO FALL OFF. MY COMPLAINT WAS DISMISSED WHEN THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID "OH THAT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN " SHORTLY THEREAFTER HE SAID THE TIRE...
WHILE MAKING RIGHT HAND TURNS, THE CONSUMER WOULD HEAR A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END. THE DEALERSHIPS MECHANIC WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION. THE CAUSE WAS NOT DETERMINE.
WHILE DRIVING OUR DURANGO AT NIGHT AND SWITCHING THE LIGHTS FROM BRIGHT TO DIM I HAVE HAD THE HEADLIGHTS GO OUT. THE LAST TIME THE HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT, I HAD USED MY BRIGHTS WHILE TAKING COUNTRY ROADS, BUT WHEN I GOT ON THE MAJOR HIGHWAY, I-35 MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT COMPLETELY. I WAS UNABLE TO PULL OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND IT WAS VERY FRIGHTENING. I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN WHEN I WENT FROM BRIGHT TO DIM ONCE BEFORE AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE, THIS LAST TIME WAS SCARY. I HAD BOTH CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE ON THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 30, 2004. THIS IS DEFINATELY A HAZARD AND COULD CERTAINLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. MY HUSBAND WORKS 35 MILES FROM HOME AND WHILE GETTING ONTO ANOTHER MAJOR HIGHWAY HE HAD THE FRONT BEARING FREEZE AND THE CV JOINT BREAK. HE WAS ONLY GETTING ONTO THE ON...
WHILE TRAVELING AT UNKNOWN SPEED CONSUMER SAW VEHICLE PULLING TO THE RIGHT. DEALERSHIP SERVICED VEHICLE, AND NOTICE FRONT SUSPENSION WAS WORN OUT. *AK
MY WIFE'S 1999 GARAGE-KEPT DURANGO WITH ONLY 25,600 MILES ON IT IS AT THE DODGE DEALER RIGHT NOW HAVING BOTH LOWER BALL JOINTS REPLACED. COST ESTIMATE IS $560. I TOOK THE TRUCK IN TO HAVE THE SUSPENSION INSPECTED BASED LARGELY UPON THE MEDIA COVERAGE OF THIS DEFECT, AND THE INFO I GLEENED FROM THIS USEFULL NHTSA DATABASE. I JUST CALLED THE DODGE CONTACT-US PHONE NUMBER, AND DOCUMENTED MY COMPLAINT. THE POLITE WOMAN TOOK DOWN MY INFO, BUT SHE SAID THAT WAS ALL SHE COULD DO, AND THAT I SHOULD SAVE MY RECEIPTS FOR THE REPAIRS, IN CASE THERE IS A RECALL. I AM AN ENGINEER, AND I AM CONVINCED THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT. I HAVE A 1992 EXPLORER WITH 116,000 MILES ON IT AND HAVE NEVER HAD THIS KIND OF PROBLEM. WHILE AT THE DODGE DEALERSHIP, I LOOKED UNDERNEATH THE SHINY NEW 2004 DURANGO ON THE LOT - WHAT...
MY 1999 DODGE DURANGO HAS BEEN INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MANY TIMES FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM, CONSTANT GRINDING AT THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE, THE GRINDING CONTINUES WHEN BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY AND ON RIGHT AND LEFT TURNS...THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CONTINUALLY CLAIMS THAT THEY "CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM" THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF I CAN GET THIS VEHICLE DECLARED A LEMON. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE, AND DEALER FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED NEW BUSHINGS AND BALL JOINTS. *AK *SC
RIGHT UPPER CONTROL ARM CAME LOOSE CAUSING POPPING, BINDING AND STEERING CONTROL PROBLEMS. ALSO, UPPER AND LOWER RIGHT BALL JOINTS WERE WORN OUT. HAD TO HAVE THE RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION REPAIRED AT 73,600 MILES. NOW TWO WEEKS AFTER, THE LEFT FRONT IS DOING THE SAME AND NEEDS REPAIRING. THERE WAS A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE IN THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WHILE IN MOTION. UPON INSPECTION OF VEHICLE BY THE DEALERSHIP, THEY NOTICED THAT THE SWAY BAR BUSHINGS COLLAPSED. *AK *SCC *JB
ON 09-16-03 I TOOK OUR 1999 DURANGO TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR A GRINDING NOISE IN THE FRONT END (I SUSPECTED IT TO BE WHEEL BEARINGS). THE DURANGO ONLY HAD 50,000 MILES ON IT AND I LEARNED THAT IT NEEDED WHEEL BEARING/HUB ASSEMBLIES ON BOTH SIDES. THAT COST ME NEARLY $900 AND NOW ONLY 1 MONTH LATER I AM FACED WITH REPLACING UPPER BALL JOINTS AND CONTROL ARMS ON BOTH SIDES. THE DEALERSHIP AND DAIMLER CHRYSLER ARE NO HELP WITH THESE PROBLEMS. I FEEL THESE COMPONENTS HAVE FAILED PREMATURELY. THIS IS NOT A VEHICLE THAT IS DRIVEN ROUGHLY (MY WIFE USES IT TO TRANSPORT OUR TWO SMALL CHILDREN).
