2017 CHEVROLET VOLT Power Train Problems

Car does not sent park position when lever is pushed in park position. This results in car not being turned off and drains the battery.

For approximately 4 months, after shifting the vehicle to park and attempting to shut the vehicle off, I get a warning message to “Shift to Park” even though the vehicle is already in park. The vehicle will not shut off unless I shift the vehicle into reverse and then back into park.

Car started giving message “Place car in park”, even though car is in Park. Thus not allowing me to turn my car off. I have to move it from Park to Drive multiple times before it registers and I can turn my car off. This happens at least once a day, but seems to be getting worse and worse… looking online many others are having same issue across many Chevy models.

After parking the car and moving the shifter to the "park" position, I tried to turn off the vehicle. The message "Action Required: Shift to Park" appeared, and the vehicle would not turn off. After the problem began, it happened more and more frequently, sometimes requiring 3-5 attempts to shut off the car before it successfully turned off and I could leave it parked. After this happened almost every time I drove for two months, I took the car to a Chevrolet dealer, where they confirmed the issue and replaced the shifter. The problem has since ceased, but it was a very expensive repair for a problem that seems to be very common in Volts.

Car is stuck unable to start, screen shows "Shift to Park" when trying to put into gear.

I have owned the 2017 Volt since August of 2017. Late 2018 or early 2019 I started having an intermittent problem when I turned the car off. The screen showed an error message "Action required - Shift to park". The car was in park already. I would push the start button. Shift into gear and shift again into park. In the beginning that solved the problem. But the car did not fully shut down when the error message is displayed. If the door is opened, the signal that the engine is running beeps. I took it to the dealer service department . They kept the car for a day to diagnose the problem but did not get the error message. But as the problem was intermittent, it continued. As do many other owners of Chevrolet Volts and Malibus, I have experienced the "Shift-to-Park" problem last year and again this year. The problem involves shifting to park and then shutting off the motor. The motor stops but the error message "Shift to Park to turn off engine" appears on the dashboard console. The engine has stopped, the car is in park, but the message continues. When I open the door, the beeping alert signal begins and continues. I had it repaired by the dealer last year and the 2017 Volt is back at the dealer's for the same problem again this year. There should be a recall for this widespread problem.

Car would not turn off. Got the message "Shift to park" on driver display, but car was in park. Had to cycle the gear shifter several times in order to get it to shut off.

We are having the "Shift to Park" problems described many times on various forums about this car. The car does not recognize that we have indeed shifted into Park (when we have) and remains on. Others have described power outage whiles driving and various serious issues once this problem starts. GM is aware of the problem.

When turning the car off a "shift to park" message appeared. The car wouldn't automatically lock because it thought it was still in drive. When I returned I tried to turn the car on while still in park, I shifted back to Drive and then back to park and the same message appeared when I tried to turn it on as if it still hadn't turned off. No AC, steering or the startup sound so I tried to wiggle it and then took my foot off the brake and then turned off, I then opened the door to cut power. I put my foot on the brake and the car started normally but this is the 4th time in less than a week. When turning off the car, after shifting to park, I get a message indicating "Shift to Park". As it is already in Park, there is nothing that can be done. I have sometimes been able to get it to go away by continually starting, shifting to drive, shifting back to park and then trying to shut the car down again. Sometimes I just don't have time to do it and have to leave the car in this state and leave the car. I doubt it could be driven as I have the key fob, but it is on and when I get back, the car is powered up. I am not sure if there are safety implications to this as I don't know the cause of this problem. I have researched on line and this is not unique to my 2017 Volt.

When attempting to turn off the vehicle, the vehicle does not recognize that the shift lever has been moved to the park position and thus stopping the vehicle shut down sequence. The vehicle provides a warning message to the driver that in order to shut the vehicle off, the vehicle needs to be shifter to park. The shift lever at this point is stuck in the park position and unable to be moved but the vehicle will not recognize the lever position. and you are unable to to move it. In order to get the vehicle to recognize the lever is in park, you must press the starter button, which discontinues the shut down process and commences the start up sequence. You must then press the shutdown button again to get the vehicle to shut down. Quick search of the internet indicates many other owners are experiencing the same issue...

Car intermittently fails to shift from Drive to Park which means car can’t be turned off. Car intermittently fails to allow the fuel door to be opened which means it can’t be refueled.

In increasing recurrence, when I try to turn the vehicle off, after having shifted to park and the dashboard is displaying that the vehicle is indeed in park, a notification alert appears saying "action required, shift to park" and the vehicle will not power off unless the shifter is jammed forward sometimes registering that it is in park. Often I will have to turn the car back on, and shift into drive and back into park and sometimes that will work and the car will shut off properly after that.

Upon shifting vehicle in park, the vehicle will not turn off and shows a "shift to park" warning on the dash. Jiggling the gear shift has worked in the beginning but now is becoming less effective. Vehicle does not shut off unless this warning clears. We view this ad a safety and security concern.

THE VEHICLE DOES NOT RECOGNIZE WHEN PUT IN PARK, GIVES THE ERROR "SHIFT TO PARK" CANNOT TURN VEHICLE OFF AND GOES IN TO ACCESSORY MODE.

Shift to park issue. When stopping the car and placing it in park it will flash a warning message stating that you need to "Shift to Park" even though the car is in park. As a result the car will effectively keep running for a period of time. My 2017 Volt began exhibiting this issue recently. I took it to the local Chevy dealer who charged me $106.00 to tell me what they already knew since there are multiple Service Bulletins for this issue. The car only has 34k miles on it but is past the 3 year limit so they also want to charge me to repair it but based on multiple online chatter the repair does not typically last for more than a year. Why is something like my car will not shut off not being treated as a safety concern??

IT IS AN ONGOING ISSUE AND THAT HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY. WHEN ARRIVING TO A STOP (AT TIMES) THE CAR STILL ADVANCES FORWARD ABOUT A FOOT, EVEN WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS BEING USED AS FAR AS IT CAN. ALSO THE VEHICLE CLAIMS TO BE LOSING PROPULSION, OFTEN, AND SEEMS STRAINED WHEN OPERATING WHEN THE MESSAGE APPEARS.

I AM EXPERIENCING THE WIDELY DOCUMENTED "SHIFT TO PARK" ISSUE. [XXX] WHEN I AM PARKING THE CAR, I SHIFT INTO PARK AND TURN OFF THE CAR POWER. BUT OFTEN A RED WARNING LIGHT FLASHES IN THE CENTER CONSOLE INSTRUCTING ME TO "SHIFT TO PARK". AT THAT POINT, THE SHIFTER IS LOCKED AND NUDGING IT DOESN'T CLEAR THE ERROR. SO I HAVE TO RESTART THE CAR, SHIFT TO REVERSE(OR DRIVE), SHIFT BACK TO PARK AND THEN TURN OFF THE POWER AND HOPE THAT THE ERROR GOES AWAY. ACCORDING TO REGEN2 IN [XXX] , ITS A LUBRICATION ISSUE OF THE CENTRAL MAIN SHAFT ITS NOT DANGEROUS BUT ANNOYING AND PREVENTS ME FROM LEAVING THE CAR WHILE I TRY TO CLEAR THE ERROR. SHIFT-TO-PARK ISSUE. AFTER SHIFTING TO PARK, AN ALERT SAYS "ACTION REQUIRED - SHIFT TO PARK." THE CAR WILL NOT TURN OFF AND THE DOORS WILL NOT LOCK.

AFTER BEING PARKED FOR OVER 24 HOURS, WHEN WE STARTED THE VEHICLE WE GOT A MESSAGE SHIFT TO PARK. THE CAR WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR AND WAS UNDRIVEABLE. WE TRIED TO CONTACT ONSTAR FROM THE VEHICLE BUT THD CONNECTION KEPT BREAKING UP. WE GOT THROUGH ON OUR CELL AND WERE FORWARDED TO GM. THEY ORDERED ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCECE. WHILE WAITING, WE AGAIN STARTED THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS A BEW MESSAGE INITIALIZING: WAIT TO SHIFT BUT THE CAR DID NOT GO INTO GEAR. WHEN ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE ARRIVED, THEY ALSO TRIED WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP. IN READING VARIOUS FORUMS, IT APPEARS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND A MAJOR REPAIR. I AM CURIOUS AS TO WHY THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL FIR THIS ISSUE?

IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO SHIFT INTO PARK. NEARLY HAVE TO PUSH HARD TO HAVE THE PARK SETTING ENGAGE. UNABLE TO TURN ENGINE OFF WHEN THIS HAPPENS. ALSO, THE WINDOW WILL NOT GO UP SMOOTHLY. IT GOES UP AND DOWN ALL ON ITS OWN. IT APPEARS TO HAVE A MIND OF ITS OWN. YOU MUST OPEN THE WINDOW ALL THE WAY BEFORE IT WILL CLOSE. CANNOT PREFORM THAT FUNCTION WHEN IT IS ONLY PARTIALLY OPENED.

SHIFT TO PARK ISSUE. IT WILL NOT GO INTO PARK AND ALLOW CAR TO BE TURNED OFF. PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. CHEVY SAYS THIS VIN NUMBER IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY DESPITE FACT IT IS A KNOWN PROBLEM.

I AM HAVING A 'SHIFT TO PARK' ISSUE. WHEN I STOP THE CAR AND SHIFT TO PARK, I ATTEMPT TO POWER OFF THE CAR. THE VOLT WILL NOT POWER OFF AND I GET AN ALERT ON THE DASHBOARD THAT STATES "SHIFT CAR TO PARK TO TURN OFF". BUT THE CAR IS ALREADY IN PARK. I AM UNABLE TO LOCK THE CAR AND THE LIGHTS WILL STAY ON FOR A FEW MINUTES. WORSE YET, IT IS INTERMITTENT. AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS AT RE-STARTING AND STOPPING THE CAR IF USUALLY TURNS OFF. MY VOLT HAS ONLY 28K MILES.

WITH THE VEHICLE STATIONARY AND GEAR SHIFT SET TO PARK, WHEN ATTEMPTING TO POWER OFF THE VEHICLE, A 'SHIFT TO PARK' MESSAGE APPEARS ON THE DASHBOARD. THE VEHICLE DOES NOT POWER OFF. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS OF CHANGING THE GEAR SHIFT TO DRIVE AND BACK TO PARK, THE VEHICLE POWERED OFF.

WHEN SHIFTING INTO PARK, AND DEPRESSING THE START BUTTON TO TURN OFF THE CAR, I SEE A "ACTION NEEDED: SHIFT TO PARK" MESSAGE ON THE DASH. SOME TIMES I CAN SHIFT THE CAR BACK INTO GEAR AND SHIFT BACK, OR SOMETIMES IT JUST LETS ME TURN IT OFF. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE ON THE INTERNET REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY, WITH A FAULTY SENSOR BEING THE CULPRIT IN THE FULL ASSEMBLY. THIS AFFECTS BOTH CHEVY MALIBU'S AND CHEVY VOLTS IN THE SAME MODEL GENERATION.

SINCE PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE IN MID-2020, I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS INCLUDING AGAIN TODAY. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN OUT ON THIS ISSUE CURRENTLY.

THE CAR DOES NOT TURN OFF COMPLETELY AND SHOWS "SHIFT TO PARK" WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS IN PARK MODE. IT IS A COMMON ISSUE BUT CHEVY DOES NOT RECALL AND CHARGES CONSUMERS FOR OUT-OF-WARRANTY VEHICLES.

SHIFT TO PARK WARNING ON DASH

CAN NOT TURN ENGINE OFF AFTER PARKING THE CAR. THE MESSAGE "ACTION REQUIRED" 'SHIFT TO PARK' SHOWS UP EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS IN P AND PARKING BREAK IS ALSO APPLIED AND THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY. HAS BEEN HAPPENING EVERYDAY THE PAST WEEK. HAVE TO LEAVE THE CAR UNTIL IT TURNS ITSELF OFF!

SHIFT TO PARK ISSUE- WHEN CAR STOPPED AND GEAR SHIFTER PLACED IN "PARK", CAR DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THIS AND CANNOT CUT OFF IGNITION, SHOWING "SHIFT TO PARK" ON DASH. AFTER JIGGLING GEAR SHIFT A LOT AND PUTTING IT IN AND OUT OF PARK MULTIPLE TIMES IT FINALLY RESOLVES. AFTER SEARCHING ON WEB, THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE IN 2017 VOLTS.

KNOW AS 'SHIFT TO PARK' ISSUE. CAR WILL NOT SHUT DOWN AFTER PUT INTO PARK.

CAR WILL INTERMITTENTLY NOT TURN OFF WHEN SHIFTER PLACED IN PARK AND ON / OFF BUTTON PUSHED. MESSAGE ON DISPLAY SCREEN WILL SHOW "SHIFT TO PARK". IT APPEARS THE VEHICLE IS NOT RECOGNIZING THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE 12/10/2020 AND IT HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES THRU TODAY'S DATE 12/23/2020. IT HAPPENS IN THE PARK GEAR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO SHUT DOWN THE VEHICLE.

I GET AN ERROR MESSAGE " SHIFT TO PARK" WHEN THE VEHICLE GEAR SHIFT IS IN PARK.

PRIOR TO STARTING MY 1,100 MI TRIP WITH MY 2017 VOLT PREMIER, I INFLATED THE TIRES, CHECKED FLUIDS, & CHARGED THE CAR. THE MONTHLY DIAGNOSTIC REPORT I RECEIVED THE DAY BEFORE MY DEPARTURE INDICATED NO PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR, WHICH HAD APPROX 40,500 MI. I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATES & HIGHWAYS USING HOLD (GAS) MODE, OCCASIONALLY MOUNTAIN MODE. APPROXIMATELY 275 MI. INTO THE TRIP I RECEIVED POWER PROPULSION REDUCED ALERT. AFTER AN ADDITIONAL 50-75 MI I RECEIVED AN ACTION REQUIRED: ENGINE OVERHEATING REDUCE SPEED ALERT. I EXITED THE INTERSTATE AND PROCEEDED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS SAFE TO CONTINUE ON MY TRIP. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROPULSION ALERT WAS NOT AN IMMEDIATE CONCERN & THAT THE OVERHEATING WAS LIKELY NOT RELATED. I ALSO RECEIVED A GM DIAGNOSTIC E-MAIL STATING THERE WAS AN EMISSIONS PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE SERVICED WITHIN 7 DAYS, BUT DID NOT BECOME...

CHEVROLET "SHIFT TO PARK" DEFECT. CAN'T POWER OFF CAR OR LOCK DOORS BECAUSE VEHICLE INDICATES IT IS NOT IN PARK, DESPITE CORRECT SHIFT POSITION. $400 TO REPLACE PART ON CAR WITH 45K MILES. PART NOT COVERED UNDER DRIVETRAIN WARRANTY. PROBLEM HAPPENING ACROSS CHEVY MODELS VOLT, MALIBU, TRAVERSE, ACADIA ETC... NEWSPAPER ARTICLES AND USERS COMPLAINING ON CHEVY FORUMS. NO REASON FOR SOMETHING WITH SO LITTLE USE TO BE FAILING SO EARLY ON VEHICLES. CHEVY OWES CONSUMERS A RECALL.

AFTER COMPLETING DRIVING AND THEN SHIFTING TO PARK, THE VEHICLE WON'T SHUT DOWN AFTER PUSHING START/STOP BUTTON AND GIVES AN ERROR MESSAGE TO 'SHIFT TO PARK' EVEN THOUGH IT'S ALREADY BEEN SHIFTED TO PARK.

FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THREE YEARS THIS CAR FAILS TO TURN OFF WHEN IN PARK. INSTEAD A MESSAGE IS DISPLAYED SAYING "SHIFT INTO PARK" EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS ALREADY IN PARK. LAST TIME IT REQUIRED THE REPLACEMENT OF A SWITCH IN THE SHIFTER. THE CAR IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN. HAPPENS ALMOST EVERY TIME THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND SOMETIMES HAPPENS OVER AND OVER BEFORE I CAN GET THE CAR TO ACTUALLY TURN OFF.

SHIFT TO PARK ISSUE IS PRESENT AND GETTING WORSE. UNABLE TO TURN OFF CAR WHEN IT OCCURS. AS THIS IS COMMON TO THIS MODEL IT SHOULD BE TREATED AS A DIRECT AND GM SHOULD REPAIR AS PART OF A RECALL.

FREQUENTLY WHEN TRYING TO PARK AND TURN OFF THE CAR, I WILL RECEIVE A "SHIFT TO PARK" ALERT ON THE DASH. THE CAR IS ALREADY IN "PARK" AND I AM TRYING TO TURN OFF THE CAR. I'VE HAD DIFFICULTY MAKING ADJUSTMENTS (E.G. HITTING THE BRAKE, TRYING TO ADJUST THE SHIFTING MECHANISM) TO GET THE CAR TO RECOGNIZE THAT IT IS ALREADY IN PARK.

SHIFT TO PARK MESSAGE IS DISPLAYED EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS IN PARK, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL AND INSTALLED AN UPDATED HARNESS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. BASED ON GOOGLE SEARCHES, THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THE CHEVY VOLT.

CAR IS GIVING A MESSAGE SAYING, "ACTION REQUIRED: SHIFT TO PARK, WHEN THE CAR IS IN PARK AND TRYING TO TURN THE CAR OFF. SEARCHING FOR THIS ON THE INTERNET REVEALS THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE CHEVROLET VOLT AND OTHER CHEVROLET MODELS.

AS I WAS DRIVING I RECEIVED A MESSAGE ON THE DRIVER INFO CENTER TO SHIFT IN PARK AND I LOST ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING. PULLED OFF TO THE SHOULDER CONTACTED ONSTAR TO GET VEHICLE TOWED TO NEARBY DEALER. WAS PUSHED BY TWO POLICE OFFICERS TO GET OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ON THE TWO LANE HIGHWAY. ONCE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP THE TOW DRIVER SAID I HAVE DRIVE AND REVERSE CAPABILITY AGAIN WHICH I DIDN'T HAVE WHILE PUT ON TOWER. AS I WAS STOPPED ON SIDE OF ROAD MY DRIVER INFO CENTER STATED PROPULSION POWER IS REDUCED SO I COULDN'T DRIVE OR REVERSE. CHECK ENGINE WAS ON THAT NIGHT AND THAT MORNING. AT THE DEALERSHIP, NO CODES COULD BE READ BECAUSE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT AWAY.

SHIFT-TO-PARK ISSUE. WHILE IN PARK, CAR SHOWS ERROR "SHIFT-TO-PARK" AND ELECTRICAL PARTS OF THE CAR WILL NOT TURN OFF. AFTER SHIFTING TO DRIVE/LOW AND THEN BACK TO PARK SEVERAL TIMES, IT SENSES THAT THE GEAR IS IN THE PARK LOCATION AND ALLOWS THE CAR TO BE SHUT OFF. HOWEVER, THIS HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE OVER TIME. MOST RECENT ISSUE TOOK OVER 15 MINUTES OF DOING THIS TO GET THE CAR TO REMOVE THE ERROR AND TURN OFF. ISSUE STARTED AROUND 31,000 MILES. CURRENT MILEAGE AS OF THIS WRITING IS 34,000.

AFTER I STOP THE CAR, PUT IT IN PARK, AND THEN PRESS "POWER" OFF, I GET AN ALERT ON THE DASHBOARD "ACTION REQUIRED: SHIFT TO PARK" AND THE CAR WILL NOT TURN OFF DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT IS ALREADY IN PARK. THE GEAR SHIFT REQUIRES ADDITIONAL MANIPULATION (TO BE MOVED BACK AND FORTH) BEFORE THE CAR UNDERSTANDS THAT IS IN "PARK".

AFTER CAR IS SHIFTED TO PARK AND IGNITION SWITCH PUSHED TO TURN CAR OFF, DASHBOARD DISPLAYS MESSAGE 'ACTION REQUIRED SHIFT TO PARK' AND CAR WILL NOT SHUT OFF. REPEATED POWERING CAR ON AND OFF, JIGGLING AND MOVING SHIFTER ALL DO NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM, AND CAR WILL NOT ALLOW SHUTOFF.

AFTER SHIFTING TO PARK TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE A SHIFT TO PARK MESSAGE IS DISPLAYED AND THE VEHICLE CAN NOT BE TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY IN GARAGE AND PARKING LOTS.

ACTION REQUIRED: SHIFT TO PARK IS DISPLAYED EVERY TIME CAR IS TURNED OFF. MULTIPLE TIMES PRESSING AND RELEASING THE SHIFT LOCK BUTTON ON THE SHIFT LEVER WHILE ALSO SWITCHING GEAR POSITIONS DOES FIX THE PROBLEM FOR NOW. IT APPEARS TO GET WORSE WITH TIME.
