Intermittent loss of power steering while driving and at start up. Warning indicators flash "Service Power Steering Drive With Care" and "Service Stabilitrak." Most of the time, when you turn off the truck and turn it back on again, the message will clear and all will be fine again. However, a week or two will go by and it happens again. The last time it happened, it would not clear right away. Finally, it did the next day. GM says there was a recall on my truck that was repaired for this problem but I'm seeing a lot of people online still having problems. This is very dangerous because I cannot physically steer the truck when the power steering goes out. I'm very concerned that me or my teenage son who drives it is going to get in a serious accident.

Had safety recall for loss of power steering repair done in November of 2021. First incident: Leaving a grocery store parking lot, loss of power steering made the steering nearly impossible at low speeds. Message on display said to have steering serviced and dinged. Had a tow truck come and take it to the same dealership that did the repair. Low voltage code was reset, power steering was returned. Dealership wanted $2.3k to repair. Second incident: One month later, pulling out of my driveway when the same message displayed and the dash dinged. Had a tow truck take it to a different repair shop, same issue, same resolution. $2.4k repair. I declined both repairs.

While making a left hand turn, the power steering assist suddenly failed. A warning chime sounded and a message appeared on information display: (Service power steering service stabilitrack drive with care). Due to the sudden loss of assist, the vehicle almost left the road then overcorrected into the oncoming lane. After parking the vehicle and shutting it off, it restarted and operated normally again. My safety as well as that of others was put at risk. The problem has not been reproduced by a service center. The vehicle has not been inspected. There were no warning lamps or symptoms prior to the event occurring.

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the power steering assist failed to operate as needed with the power steering and stabili-trak messages displayed on the instrument panel. The contact used excessive force to steer the vehicle due to the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed with a defective power steering module. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

I’m having an issue with my power steering assist. It just goes out while I’m driving. I almost hit a telephone pole one day almost 2 cars two other times. It started about seven months ago when you pull over shut off the truck open the door to break continuity for the electrical system close the door and start it. It goes back to working normal. It’s gotta be part of the connections underneath the power steering assembly unit itself, but there is no recall for my specific Vin.

During travel on the highway warning lights appeared and the vehicle lost power steering. This posed a significant safety risk at higher rates of speed and curved roads. Driver immediately drove to the nearest dealership to inquire about safety recalls. The dealership stated that no recalls had been issued for this vehicle and they require a fee to assess the vehicle. Dealership said that the steering failure could result in death and that the incident could have been catastrophic and fatal. The dealer again stated that there was no recalls without checking make model or vin. Upon research of the problem there was no specific recall for this vehicle but it is a common issue for this year make and model. If numerous vehicles identical to mine are having the same issue it is reasonable to believe my vehicle should be recalled experiencing the same problems.

“My vehicle has repeatedly lost electric power steering while driving, and I get warnings for Stabilitrak, traction control, and ‘Service Power Steering – Drive with Care.’ Restarting the vehicle temporarily clears the issue, but it keeps happening.”
#11686924 |
As I approached an intersection a chime sounded and a message appeared saying power steering is off...I barely avoided an accident. when I restarted the engine the steering was back to normal. I have since learned that this has happened to many vehicles of this make and model. The dealer claims that this particular model is not on the recall list. I have also learned this is happening to models that are not under the recall. this is a very dangerous situation and needs to be addressed.

I lost power steering , a message came on display and a warning sound and then no power steering while driving on highway, I check the recalls and it shows a recall related about this issue was completed back in 2021 august , but I never took my car to dealership to get this fix because I never received a letter notifying me about it. please I need to get this issue fix and no it has not been completed .

My 2015 chevrolet colorado 3.6 v6 LT is having random complete loss of power steering while driving. I contacted chevrolet regarding the recall for 2015 model colorado and they do not know why there was never a recall for my truck, they stated there's nothing they can do, I will have to pay the money for the repair that they have for the recall. But I won't be remembursted. This make absolutely no sense. If the repair is the recall repair then why would it not be covered? Power steering failure on electrical power steering unit Power steering has stopped working while driving, going through an intersections. Turning the vehicle off then turning it back on resets the system and Power steering works. I cannot reproduce or mimic issue, it happens at random not warning. Dealer or service center cannot diagnose because issue cannot be mimic The warning lamp come...

Vehicle loses electric power steering intermittently. Power steering components (gear, harness, hose, torque sensor) all replaced in August 2023 due to water damage/corrosion. Loss of power steering returned in May 2025. Brought to dealer and was told that harness needed replacement again due to water damage/corrosion for $1700. Vehicle is only driven on paved roads and is parked on street where no other cars have water damage issues. I suspect there is a poor design for this harness connection. No other electric issues noted.

Power steering and stabiltrack are going out intermittently. The city's truck is turned off and restarted. Problem goes away but then will return later in the day

Steering: Sudden loss of power steering. DIS display says check Stable trak Transmission: Has a problem with request for downshift

As I was driving on the freeway at approximately 65MPH, the steering, suddenly and unexpectedly, became extremely hard. It was so hard I had to use a lot of arm power to steer it to the shoulder of the freeway. The incident scared me to death, as it has never happened to me before in any vehicle. I loaned my truck to my twin brother and it happened to him too. He actually almost crashed. According to Chevy/GMC there's no recall for this. IT SHOULD BE! Thank you
#11669283 |
While I was driving home at about 50 mph a warning light of power steering failure appeared. I decreased speed and struggled to maneuver the steering wheel to keep the truck in my lane. I live in a rural area of Tennessee with hairpin curves and mountains! Myself and everyone I met was at risk. I did make it home and called my dealership concerning a recall for power steering failure. No recalls! This appears to be a widespread safety concern.

My vehicle keeps losing power steering and abs and traction control lights come on, there was a recall for this issue but not for the month my vehicle was manufactured
#11656820 |
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly, requiring increased effort to maneuver the vehicle. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The service power steering warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the steering gear torque sensor cover assembly. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 107,000.

While driving and attempting to make a right hand turn, all of the sudden the power steering went out. There were warnings that stated traction control was out and power steering were out. There were also warning chimes. But these did not happen BEFORE i lost control. I almost hit another vehicle that was at the stop sign on the street I was attempting to turn onto. It jerked the steering wheel out of my hands. Luckily I was going slow enough to stop and not collide with the other vehicle. This has happened on several occasions, but luckily it hasn't been that close to a collision except that time. Once I turn the truck off and start it again, I will have steering control back. I understand that this is a recall issue for my year, make, and model; but apparently not for the month my truck was produced....

Electric power steering assist failed. Pictures were taken to demonstrate lack of compliance with GM recall rework procedure.(procedure attached see pages 7&8)The dealer kept the old assembly as there was a core charge of $150 for the unit, which they returned to GM. Truck was extremely difficult to steer and maintain control. Dealership evaluated and said the steering assembly had to be replaced due to a communications error. The warning indicators came on at the same time as the steering failure. SR:9-14338761808 opened with GM, response was negative.
#11634760 |
The power steering just stops working. I find a safe place to stop and turn the truck off. It must reset and when restarting the power steering comes back. You never know when the will happen as there is no warning. Making a turn at speeds is unsafe. You are driving with the power steering and halfway through the turn it just gets super hard to turn. A smaller person would have a very hard time turning the wheel. It has been happening for some time but recently it happens every day. I see there was a recall but my vin didn't show a recall for this truck but it should.

After dropping my Dad off at his appt. at Truman VA in Columbia I was pulling in the parking garage and the steering became VERY hard to turn..A light came on that said something about servicing the steering or something like that..I got it in a place to park and turned it off..after his appt I ran out and got in the truck and after starting it the steering worked perfect..2 hours later when we got home it felt different when I turned in the driveway and then it started wobbling like the wheels were falling off. I stopped it, turned off the motor, restarted it and it worked fine again..when we ask the Dealership, 30 miles from us is closest one, they said there wasn't any recalls on it so we'd have to bring it in they would check it out and something about $400 or $500 probably to...

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH and attempting to make a right tun, the vehicle unexpectedly lost power steering functionality and the steering wheel locked, causing the vehicle to drive straightforward towards a ditch. The contact immediately depressed the brake pedal and stopped the vehicle. The contact was able to reverse into a safe location. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact stated that the power steering was functional the following morning, and the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the steering gear had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering) because the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. I was driving and power steering went out, i see many others had same issue and recall only for a few production months. it is beyond a safety concern that you have not control of a large truck.
#11615268 |
The power steering system on my vehicle malfunctioned. I was turning at speed when all of a sudden the power steering failed without any warning messages. Turning the vehicle was nearly uncontrollable, putting myself, my passengers, and other drivers at risk. This is a known issue with the same make, model and year of my vehicle, however the manufacturer refuses to address the issue with my specific vehicle. This is the same issue that is addressed under 21V213. I have reported this issue before in the past, and called GM about it, however they will not fix the issue.
#11614078 |
While driving at highway speeds, our 2015 Chevrolet Colorado suddenly experienced loss of power assisted steering. I was able to steer the vehicle, but there was no power assist. This happened suddenly, with no advance warning lights. At the time of the incident, the driver information center displayed "check power steering". The sudden loss surprised me and although the vehicle was driveable, the steering was very difficult and a large amount of effort was required to park the truck. I am very glad this did not happen while my wife was driving the vehicle. Upon restarting the truck after a key off cycle, the code and the symptom disappeared. We were able to drive the truck home without the failure occurring, only to drive it again the next day and experience the failure a second time. Once again, the symptom disappeared after a key cycle. We researched the issue on...

My 2015 Chevy Colorado had a repaired recall for the Power Steering assist system. This repair shows as being completed on 2/19/2016, however I have had the Stability Trak system error come on, which in turn restricts the power steering and thus completely unsafe to drive as it has happened in the middle of turns and straightens the wheel out immediately.
#11612665 |
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel seized with the power steering warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was able to restart; however, the failure recurred. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Power steering assist suddenly failed while negotiating a turn in a freeway onramp at approximately 40MPH. Very nearly lost control of the vehicle and was towing a small travel trailer at the time. Steering was VERY stiff and maneuvering at slow speeds especially difficult. OBDII code C0545. Warning lights for Stabilitrak and Traction control systems and a message for "Service Power Steering System" appeared at the moment of failure. I have not yet taken to the dealer or had inspected. I did check system fuses for the Power Steering, Stabilitrak, and Traction control and all were intact. Systems are working as they should as of the next morning.

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering); however, the dealer refused to complete the recall repair, citing that the frame had extensive corrosion and the vehicle was unsafe to raise up on a lift. The contact stated that the dealer was not justified in denying the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Service power steering, drive with care
#11604835 |
At highway speeds, the Service Power Steering System and the Traction Control light appears on the interment cluster message center and the vehicle becomes difficult to steer safely because the electronic power steering assist is turned off. To make the vehicle operational one must stop, turn off the vehicle and turn it back on. This will allow the power steering electronics to continue to operate normally until the next time when it suddenly cuts the power steering off again. I looked on this website and I see tons of recalls and complaints about this issues. My vehicle has over 200K highway miles and I am not expecting the manufacture to to cover the cost of this repair, but I also don't believe it is a $2K total Power Steering System replacement either. There has to be a few hundred dollar wiring repair that can be completed to make the system...

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact lost control of the vehicle, with the traction control warning light illuminated. The contact restarted the vehicle, but the failure persisted. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

Power steering and stabilitrak will suddenly go out while I’m driving with no warning. Recall repair was already performed 6/2023 yet I’m still experiencing the problem. I contacted the dealer within a few days of the repair and explained the problem was still occurring. The lady I spoke to said I didn’t tell them I was already having problems with the power steering when I dropped off the vehicle for repair. I was informed I would have to pay for the additional repair out of pocket.

2015 Chevy Colorado power steering has been going out while driving, often on the highway. very hard to steer/turn. several times have to try to put truck in neutral, turn off the truck, turn it back on to get it to come back on... all while doing 65-70mph on the highway. I took it to my mechanic last night, and today I'm told, there has been a recall issued for this issue. Call GM and talk to them. I do, and am told after giving VIN, for whatever reasons, my specific truck is not included in the recall - and yet I fight with the wheel trying not to run off the road or slam into someone else as I try to pull over - which is what this safety recall is all about. All out of pocket expense to me and am told, by GM, even if they do...

Power steering assist is occasionally lost and makes vehicles hard to manuver. If the car is turned off and restarted the problem is momentarily fixed but happens again at random.
#11586984 |
Power steering failed several times. Last 2 incidents were at highway speeds. Their is a bulletin on this issue but no recall. Have to shut off vehicle and restart to clear issue. Dash displays power steering failure warning and to drive carefully.
#11586303 |
My power steering system failed again while driving. The car became very difficult to control, especially at low speeds, and poised a safety concern for myself and drivers around me. I had it inspected, the service center recreated the issue and confirmed the electrical connections have failed, as outlined in the recall cited below. The year, make, model and issue is the same as the information included in campaign 21V213000, however Chevrolet refuses to include my VIN in the list of recalled vehicles.

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost power steering functionality and the vehicle was difficult to steer. Additionally, the service stabili-trak warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the power steering function became inoperable. The contact was able to veer the vehicle to the shoulder prior to having the vehicle towed to the dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed with power steering failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

Lost power steering twice in while traveling 70mph on interstate highway. Specifically, I lost power steering and got lights for loss of "Stabilitrak." I had to pull over to turn off the truck, and power steering returned upon turning back on the vehicle. No loss of power steering fluid was noted. This incident repeated itself exactly the same several days later. Upon taking to the mechanic, they confirmed with the following: "We've confirmed an intermittent issue with the power steering, identified by the retrieval of the C0545 code for the steering torque sensor. Upon conducting a thorough data test, we observed erratic signals from the steering wheel torque sensor. We meticulously inspected all connections, finding no issues. Furthermore, our testing revealed that the torque sensor circuits are not shorted to power or ground, and there are no instances of resistance or opens. We recommend replacing and programming the electronic steering...

The power steering system stopped working while the vehicle was in motion. The issue is identical to the issue noted under campaign 21V213000, and effects a 2015 model year vehicle, however my VIN was not included in the recall
#11582294 |
Repeatedly losing power steering while driving. A recall for this problem has been issued but for some reason my vin falls outside of the recalled vehicles. This is dangerous and frustrating as the the failure exactly matches the recall description!
#11580839 |
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving at 10-45 MPH, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist. The power steering assist warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was a loss of power steering due to fault codes in the transfer control module, power steering control module, and front view camera module. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 106,266.

This issue has been fixed two times already and the issue is still occurring. Power steering quits working while driving anywhere. Service power steering warning light comes on. I shut off the engine and then restarted the engine and power steering was restored. Sometimes this worked. Now I have lost all power steering completely. Because the vehicle has been fixed prior, I have to pay to have the parts replaced again.
