TOYOTA DEFECTS MALFUNCTIONING
CONSUMING A LOT OF OIL, WHEN VEHICLE ARE IN MOTION,I DID OIL CHANGE AND NOT RUN EVEN 1000 MILE AND IT WHEN TO LOWER POINT WHEN I CHECK IT IN THE MORNING BEFORE START THE CAR, I COMPLAINT TOYOTA AGENCY NOTHING SOLVE I DO NOT WHAT TO DO, PLEASE HELP, THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP.
VEHICLE BURNS OVER ONE QUART OF OIL EVERY 1,000 MILES OR LESS. THIS WAS FIRST OBSERVED IN 2015 AFTER THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 120,000 MILES. THROUGHOUT IT'S LIFE THE VEHICLE HAS RECEIVED REGULARLY SCHEDULE MAINTENANCE. THIS PROBLEM CAN CREATE AN UNSAFE CONDITION AND POTENTIALLY SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE IF NOT REGULARLY CHECKED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE VEHICLE CONSUMED OIL EXCESSIVELY. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER AND PASSED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. AT 2,500 MILES, THE VEHICLE BURNED ALMOST THREE QUARTS OF OIL. THE WARRANTY WAS EXTENDED THROUGH TO OCTOBER OF 2016. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TEST WAS INACCURATE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 112,100.
THIS COMPLAINT IS DUE TO A RECALL: WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION ZE7 CONCERNING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TESTED MY CAR ON 8/27/15 AND IT FAILED. I WAS ADVISED TO KEEP CHECKING & ADDING OIL AS NEEDED AND I WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN THE PARTS ARRIVED TO CORRECT THIS. WHEN I CALLED TODAY, 2/2/16, THEY STILL HAVEN'T RECEIVED PARTS FOR RAV4, I AM VERY UPSET THAT IT'S TAKING SO MANY MONTHS AND I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS PROBLEM IN THE MEANTIME. I FEEL AS IF I'M DRIVING A TIME BOMB AND IT'S VERY BOTHERSOME TO KEEP CHECKING THE LEVEL.
ENGINE MADE KNOCKING NOISE WHILE ON THE FREEWAY, AND THEN THE CAR DIED - EVERYTHING QUIT. HAD TO COAST OFF THE NEAREST EXIT. THERE WAS NO WARNING - NO MAINTENANCE REQUIRED LIGHTS WERE LIT ON THE DASH. STILL HAD ANOTHER ALMOST 2,000 MILES TO GO BEFORE NEXT OIL CHANGE WAS DUE. ENGINE IS DEAD. PER TOYOTA "CATASTROPHIC INTERNAL DAMAGE FROM THE RODS." CAR WAS WELL TAKEN CARE OF, NEVER MISSED AN OIL CHANGE, AND 8 OF THE LAST 9 YEARS, THE CAR WAS LOYALLY SERVICED AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP.
THE 2006 RAV4 MODEL TOYOTA HAS A RECORD OF STUCK OR CLOGGED OIL RINGS CAUSING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION WHICH CAN LEAD TO FAILURE OF ENGINE AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THIS DEFECT CAUSES OIL TO BURN AT A RATE OF APPROXIMATELY 1 QUART OR MORE EVERY 1,000 MILES. MY RAV4 WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 7/16/2015 TO PERFORM THE FIRST PHASE OF AN OIL INSPECTION & CONSUMPTION TEST. ON 8/4/2015 THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR RE-INSPECTION. IT FAILED THE CONSUMPTION TEST & I WAS TOLD THAT AS SOON AS PARTS BECAME AVAILABLE I'D BE CONTACTED; HOWEVER, THERE WERE SEVERAL CUSTOMERS AHEAD OF ME AWAITING THE SAME REPAIR. TWO MONTHS HAVE PASSED & I HAVE YET TO HEAR BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP AS TO WHEN THE REPAIR CAN HAPPEN. I CALLED THE SERVICE MANAGER 10/2/2015. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME HE WOULD LOOK INTO THE MATTER & RETURN...
DEAR OFFICER, I WOULD LIKE TO BRING YOUR ATTENTION TO A SERIOUS FLAW WITH CERTAIN TOYOTA MODELS RELATED TO EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. BOWING DOWN TO THE THOUSANDS OF CONSUMER COMPLAINTS EARLY THIS YEAR TOYOTA ACCEPTED THAT IT IS ISSUE WITH THEIR ENGINE DESIGN WHICH CAN PUT ENGINE ON FIRE OR MAKE THE CAR COMPLETELY USELESS AFTER SEIZE. TOYOTA INDICATED THAT THEY WOULD PROVIDE PARTS EARLY THIS SPRING, YET IT IS THE END OF JUNE, AND TOYOTA (A GIANT CAR MANUFACTURER) STILL DOES NOT HAVE PARTS TO FIX THE SERIOUS PROBLEM TOYOTA CONSUMERS ARE SUFFERING THRU EVERY DAY. EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION OF OIL. IT WAS FIRST NOTICED APPROXIMATELY 3+ YEARS AGO IT WAS NOTICED WHEN CAR OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND CAR WAS ALMOST TOTALLY OUT OF OIL. AT APPROXIMATELY 2,000 MILES AFTER AN OIL CHANGE, IT IS NECESSARY TO ADD 2-3 QUARTS OF OIL. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING AFTER EVERY OIL CHANGE. TOYOTA RECENTLY TESTED AND AFTER 1,664 MILES FROM THE LAST OIL CHANGE, 3 QUARTS OF OIL WAS NEEDED TO TOP IT OFF. IT DID FAIL THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. I WANT TO KNOW WHY TOYOTA IS NOT EXTENDING CAR WARRANTY AS IS HONDA FOR THE SAME PROBLEM.
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION ON THE RAV4 IS ONE QUART AT 1,100 MILES THAT THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WILL NOT REPAIR ALTHOUGH THE HEAD TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION AS RELEASE A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLENTIN SPECIFIC FOR THIS PROBLEM. LOCAL DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THIS IS "NORMAL" FOR A CAR??
WHEN MY CAR HAD JUST UNDER 100K MILES ON IT I STARTED EXPERIENCING THE FOLLOWING OIL USAGE LEVELS: TWO OIL CHANGES AGO THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON BETWEEN OIL CHANGES; OIL DID NOT REGISTER ON THE DIPSTICK AND IT TOOK APPROXIMATELY 4 QUARTS OF OIL BEFORE OIL EVEN REGISTERED ON THE DIPSTICK. ONE OIL CHANGE AGO I CHECKED THE OIL AFTER APPROXIMATELY 2K MILES AND OIL DID NOT REGISTER ON THE DIPSTICK. IT TOOK APPROXIMATELY 3 QUARTS OF OIL BEFORE OIL REGISTERED ABOVE THE LOWEST MARKING ON THE DIPSTICK. I RECEIVED TOYOTAS WARRANTY EXTENSION NOTICE AND SCHEDULED THE EXCESSIVE OIL USAGE TEST. ON MARCH 7, 2015, PART 1 OF TOYOTAS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN TEST WAS PERFORMED; I DID NOT STAY WITH THE CAR WHILE THE OIL CHANGE WAS PERFORMED. ON APRIL 13, 2015, THE SECOND PART OF THE TEST WAS PERFORMED. I WAS SURPRISED TO BE INFORMED MY CAR DID...
OIL LIGHT CAME ON INDICATING LOW OIL ALTHOUGH THE CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED AT A LOCAL SHOP WITHIN IN THE LAST MONTH. IT THEN BECAME A PROBLEM WITH CONTINUALLY HAVING TO STOP THERE AND "TOPPING OFF" ALTHOUGH I WAS GOING THERE WHEN THE "MAINTENANCE" LIGHT CAME ON. IT WOULD NEED 1 TO 2 QUARTS EACH TIME. HAVE TO CARRY OIL ALL THE TIME IN MY CAR AS EVEN THOUGH WE CHECK IT FAIRLY OFTEN, EVERY 1 TO 2 WEEKS. IT ALWAYS NEEDS OIL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE COMPUTER SOFTWARE NEEDED TO BE UPDATED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
VEHICLE SUDDENLY STARTED CONSUMING LARGE AMOUNTS OF OIL, APPROXIMATELY 1 QUART PER 1,000 MILES. OIL HAS BEEN CHANGED AT REGULAR INTERVALS AND VEHICLE HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF IN TERMS OF REGULAR MAINTENANCE INTERVALS. *TR
I BROUGHT MY 2006 RAV4 TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR TWO DIFFERENT RECALL NOTICES INCLUDING THE SUSPENSION AND AIRBAG. UPON INSPECTION, THEY NOTIFIED ME THE WATER PUMP NEEDED REPLACING AND THAT THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKETS WERE LOOSE. THEY SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND TRIED TO TELL ME THAT IT IS CAUSED BY NORMAL WEAR & TEAR. MY LAST VEHICLE I HAD FOR OVER 190,000 MILES AND NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. UPON RESEARCHING, THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY AS FAILURE TO FIX IT COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. PREVIOUSLY I HAVE BROUGHT THE LOUD POPPING NOISE TO VARIOUS TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS AND HAVE NEVER BEEN TOLD OF THIS ISSUE IN 9 YEARS. THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IF IS WASN'T FOR THE RECALL ON THE AIRBAG. ANYTHING THAT APPEARS TO BE A "COMMON" ISSUE...
AT APPROXIMATELY 81000 MILES, RAV-4 STARTED TO BURN OIL AT A RATE OF TWO QUARTS PER EVERY 3000 MILES. NOW AT 120,000 MILES, IT BURNS ONE QUART EVERY 1000 MILES. BY COMPARISON, MY 1987 TOYOTA CAMRY DOES NOT BURN A DROP. *TR
THERE IS A VERY PRONOUNCED RATTLE, CLACKING, OR SUCH NOISE FROM THE ENGINE WHEN TRAVELING AT AROUND 25 MPH WHILE GENTLY ACCELERATING FROM BETWEEN 1500 AND 2000 RPM. IT IS QUITE REPEATABLE. IT OCCURS MORE READILY WHEN GOING UPHILL BUT I CAN INDUCE IT ON FLAT GROUND AS WELL. IT SOUNDS IT IS FROM THE TOP END BUT BECAUSE IT ONLY HAPPENS AT-SPEED I CANNOT KNOW FOR SURE. THE SOUND RESEMBLES VALVETRAIN NOISE. THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED FROM A TOYOTA DEALER WITH APPROX. 46K MILES AND IT HAS MADE THIS NOISE SINCE I FIRST OWNED THE CAR. IT HAS BEEN REPORTED TWICE AND BOTH TIMES I WAS TOLD THAT IT IS NORMAL, "ALL RAV4S DO THAT". I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS RELATED IN ANY WAY TO THE WELL-KNOWN OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE THAT THIS ENGINE HAS (2.4 LITER INLINE 4), AS I ALSO EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. *TR

AS OF 9/16/14 OUR 2006 RAV4 V6 CURRENTLY HAS 45,790 MILES AND WE JUST GOT A DIAGNOSTIC FROM A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE THAT THIS PART IS DEFECTIVE A CHARCOAL CANISTER AND AN B1S2 O2 SENSOR NEEDS REPLACEMENT. ME AND MY WIFE LOVE THE SUV BUT WITH SUCH LOW MILES I WOULD NOT HAVE EXPECTED FOR THIS TO HAVE HAPPENED. FROM MY QUICK RESEARCH, I UNDERSTAND THIS COULD CAUSE MORE ENGINE DAMAGE IF NOT REPAIRED, I SEE A DECREASE IN MILES PER GALLON AND A ROUGH IDLING. MAY, 2014 I HAD MY VEHICLE OIL CHANGE DONE. I FOLLOW THE POLICY OF THREE MONTHS OR 3500 MILES WHICH EVER COMES FIRST. I HAVE BEEN USING THIS QUICK LUBE PLACE FOR FIFTEEN YEARS. WHEN THE OIL WAS DRAINED I WAS INFORMED THAT THE OIL WAS LOW. I ASSUMED THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE DEALERS SHOP FOR A RECALL AND THE OIL CHANGE WAS DONE THEIR THAT THEY FAILED TO PUT THE PROPER AMOUNT OF OIL INTO THE VEHICLE. WITH LESS THAN 3500 MILES AND THREE MONTHS THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I WENT IN TO HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AND CHECKED FOR LEAKS. IT WAS SHORT APPROXIMATELY TWO QUARTS WITH NO SIGNS OF AN OIL LEAK. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAVE SEVERAL CUSTOMERS WITH THIS SAME MODEL WHO EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM DUE TO THE VEHICLE BURNING OIL, AND TOLD TO CONTACT TOYOTA. IT WAS...

AT ABOUT 65,000 MILES, I NOTICED THAT MY 2006 TOYOTA RAV 4 WAS CONSUMING LARGE AMOUNTS OF OIL IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES (WHICH I HAVE DONE EVERY 3000-3500 MILES). THERE WAS NO LEAK, NO WARNINGS - BUT WHEN CHECKED THE OIL WELL IS BONE DRY. BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO PLAYED DUMB, EVEN THOUGH I TOLD THEM TOYOTA HAD ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB) ABOUT THIS, AND THAT MY VIN NUMBER FALLS UNDER THE CARS LISTED. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ON-LINE, AND THE DEALERSHIP JUST SAID THAT WAS IRRELEVANT. MEANWHILE, I'VE BEEN ADDING OIL AT EVERY 1000 MILES OR LESS. *TR
THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME THREE TIMES AND TO MY WIFE ONCE. AS WE BEGIN TO ACCELERATE, EITHER FROM A STOP OR AS WE ARE ACCELERATING, WE HAVE A PAUSE IN ACCELERATION. IF FEELS LIKE WE ARE NOT PUSHING ON THE GAS BUT THAT IS NOT IT. ONCE THE GAS PEDAL IS RELEASED AND WE RE-ACCELERATE, THE CAR MOVES FORWARD NORMALLY. IT HAS BEEN VERY SCARY WHEN SOMEONE IS APPROACHING AND THE GAS DOES NOT MOVE US FORWARD. THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED IN REVERSE. *TR
THE ENGINE IS BURNING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL DUE TO A DEFECTIVE OIL RING. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE ONLY FIX IS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. *TR
ENGINE WOULD TRY TO DIE WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I LOOKED IT UP IN THE MANUAL AND SAW IT WAS THE ENGINE OIL SYMBOL. I TOOK IT IN WHERE I HAD THE OIL CHANGED LAST AND THEY SAID IT WAS 2.5 QTS LOW. THEY TOPPED IT OFF AND TOLD ME TO COME BACK AFTER 200 MILES AND WHEN I DID, THEY SAID IT HAD USED MORE THAN IT SHOULD HAVE. TOOK IT INTO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY STARTED THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. YESTERDAY WAS THE FINAL FOR THAT AND LOW AND BEHOLD, THEY DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS USING OIL. THEY SAID THE RINGS, PISTONS , VALVES AND ETC. SHOULD BE REPLACED FOR A TOTAL OF $4,300+. THEY OFFERED ME NO ASSISTANCE BUT DID TELL ME THAT THEY WERE OFFERING 0 PERCENT ON NEW VEHICLES. I WOULD NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER TOYOTA. I...

I HAVE BEEN CHANGING MY OIL EVERY 3000 MILES / 3 MONTHS OR LESS THIS RAV4 IS NOT LEAKING OIL AND NOT PUTTING SOOT OUT OR BLOWING BLUE SMOKE OUT THE TAIL PIPE SHOWING THAT IT IS BURNING OIL. NO ENGINE LIGHTS OR OIL LIGHTS CAME ON UNTIL THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING. BY THIS TIME IT WAS TOO LATE. I TOOK MY RAV4 TO GOODYEAR AND THEY SAID THAT THEY HAD TO PUT 4.5 QUARTS OF OIL IN WHICH IS HOW MUCH THE RAV4 TAKES. THEY ALSO STATED THEY DID NOT SEE ANY OIL LEAKS ANYWHERE. THIS IS THE BASE MODEL FOUR CYLINDER MODEL. OIL SHOULD NOT BE GONE IN LESS THAN 3000 MILES ESPECIAL WITH AN ENGINE THAT HAS LESS THAT 150000 MILES TODAY. WHEN BACKING THE CAR OUT AND TURNING THE STEERING, THERE IS A CLUNKING NOISE THAT OCCURS. IT MOSTLY OCCURS FROM A COLD START. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN OUT FOR THIS, BUT THE DEALER WON'T COVER IT. THE CAR STARTED MAKING A POPPING SOUND. IT WAS COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THAT CAR AND MADE THE EXHAUST SOUND REALLY LOUD. DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS THE CENTERPIPE THAT WAS CONNECTED TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE MATERIAL OF THE CENTERPIPE AND CATALYTIC WAS RUSTED AND THE DEALERSHIP BLAMED IT ON ME AND THAT I DROVE THE CAR OFF ROADING. I TOLD THEM THAT THE CAR HAS NEVER GONE OFF ROADING, GARAGED, AND WELL MAINTAINED. 12/22/2010 @ 44,169 MILES THE STEERING KNOCKED WHEN TAKING TIGHT TURNS. THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT WAS REPLACED. 9/16/2011 @ 50,131 MILES THE ALTERNATOR BEARINGS GAVE WAY AND THE WATER PUMP WAS SEEPING FLUID. THE ALTERNATOR AND WATER PUMP WERE REPLACED. 12/16/13 @ 63,336 MILES THE ENGINE FAILED. I HAVE ALWAYS BROUGHT IN MY TOYOTA FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE TO THE DEALER EVERY 5,000 MILES. IN JULY OF THIS YEAR, THE OIL WARNING LIGHT BEGAN TO LIGHT EVERY TIME I HIT THE BRAKES. MY DEALER PERFORMED AN OIL CONSUMPTION CHECK. BY NOVEMBER I WAS ADVISED TO HAVE THE ENGINE RECONSTRUCTED AND REPAIR THE RINGS AND PISTONS, BECAUSE THE ENGINE WAS LEAKING EXCESSIVE OIL. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKES. THE REPAIRS COST OVER $3500 AND TOOK OVER A WEEK TO COMPLETE. I RECENTLY LEARNED THAT THIS MODEL TOYOTA HAS A RECORD OF STUCK OIL RINGS CAUSING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION WHICH LEADS TO ENGINE FAILURE. I FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM. I OWN A 2006 RAV4. BOUGHT IT NEW AND HAVE HAD EVERY OIL CHANGE AND RECOMMENDED ENGINE SERVICE DONE SINCE THAT TIME DONE AT THE DEALERSHIP. WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO GET AN OIL CHANGE, THE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING SHOWING ON THE DIP STICK. I WAS TOLD EVERYTHING IS FINE. THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN AT APPROXIMATELY 81,950 MILES. SERVICER AGAIN TOPS OFF WITH OIL AND RETURNED AFTER DRIVING ANOTHER $1200 MILES. THIS TIME THE SERVICER STATED THAT THEY NEED TO TEAR THE CAR APART THE BEFORE PINPOINTING THE EXACT PROBLEM. APPROXIMATE COST TO DO THIS IS MAYBE $3,000.
