I was driving as usual and suddenly the air bags exploded inside the dash causing damage to the passenger window and the front crystal. Seconds after the drivers airbag also opened and consequently the alarms. I did not impact anything and the car won’t start again.
The airbag light came on suddenly, even though I had the airbag recall work done for my vehicle. I took it to a Toyota Dealership who wanted to charge me for the repair which I was willing to and perhaps work with Toyota directly to get reimbursed for but the parts weren't available.
I received a recall notice, scheduled an appointment and then went to Bev Smith Toyota in Fort Pierce, FL. My appointment was for 9:30 AM. I decided that as long as I was there, I would get my oil changed (normally I do not use dealer oil changes because they are expensive, but since I was there anyway...). At 11:10, I was presented the bill for the oil change and told that they refused to service the airbag. There was some garbage on the floor of the passenger side that the service manager claimed rendered my vehicle unsafe to work on. I pointed out that no one asked me to clean out the front seat when I scheduled the appointment, that the items were there at 9:30 when received the car, and that the car apparently was safe enough for them to perform an overpriced oil change. SEEMS CRAPPY THAT SOMETHING THEY SHOULD ALSO FIX SOMEHOW HINDERS TOYOTA'S ABILITY TO FIX THE AIRBAG.
TRAVELING ON US HWY 70 AT 35 MPH. ACCIDENTLY HIT THE REAR END OF ANOTHER VEHICLE TRAVELING STRAIGHT AHEAD OF ME AND SUDDENLY STOPPED. MY PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYED WHILE TURNED OFF WITH NO PASSENGER ON BOARD. THIS AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT BUSTED MY WINDSHIELD WHICH WILL COST ME $400.00 AND TOYOTA SAYS THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY UNLESS THERE IS A PASSENGER OR WEIGHT WHICH NO WEIGHT AND NO PASSENGER. JUST ME ALONE.

TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER IN MIAMI FOR SRS RECALL, LIGHT CAME ON ABOUT 6 MONTH EARLIER, ADVISOR TOLD ME THEY REPLACE SRS CONTROL UNIT, BUT LIGHT STILL ON AND AIRBAG ARE NOT OPERATIONAL, I WAS TOLD PROBABLY A SPIRAL CABLE NEEDS TO BE REPLACE AT MY EXPENSE AND THAT IS NOT COVERED. I TOOK MY CAR FOR A AIRBAG RECALL. MY AIRBAG LIGHT WAS ON PRIOR TO RECALL. I REALLY DON'T KNOW IF THIS FIXED, BECAUSE LIGHT IS STILL ON. FROM WHAT I HEARD MY AIRBAG WON'T EVEN WORK WITH THE LIGHT BEING ON . CALL SOMEONE ON TOYOTA AND THE SAID IT WOULD AN EXTRA CHARGE TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED. "TAKATA RECALL" I HAVE HAD MY AIRBAG INFLATOR REPLACED, SO THAT MY AIRBAG WILL NOT INFLATE UNEXPECTEDLY. BUT MY MAIN CONCERN NOW IS WITH THE AIRBAG. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVE A DAUGHTER THAT RIDES IN THE FRONT WITH ME. NOBODY IS TAKING CARE OF THE AIRBAG ITSELF. THERE ARE METAL FRAGMENTS IN THOSE AIRBAGS, AND IF I AM IN AN ACCIDENT THOSE FRAGMENTS WILL COME SHOOTING OUT OF THOSE BAGS WHICH WILL RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY AND POSSIBLY DEATH. IT HAS HAPPENED TO OTHERS. WHAT IS TOYOTA GOING TO DO ABOUT THE AIRBAGS.
TL* TAKATA RECALL. THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V043000 (AIR BAGS); HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG INDICATOR ILLUMINATED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND REMAINED ON WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
GOT INTO WHAT COULD'VE BEEN A MINOR ACCIDENT, BUT THE CAR WAS TOTALED, HOWEVER, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT EVEN DEPLOY. BEFORE THE ACCIDENT, THE SEATBELT WOULD LOCK AT RANDOM TIMES, WHICH COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I WAS MAKING A U-TURN ON A STATE ROAD. ONCE HIT, THE ENTIRE TIRE WENT UNDER THE CAR AND THE ENTIRE FRONT CAME OFF, WHICH WAS WHY I WAS SURPRISED THAT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT GO OFF.
UPON GETTING THE ECU RECALL TAKEN CARE OF FOR MY VEHICLE, I WAS TOLD THAT MY AIR BAG INDICATOR DASH LIGHT WAS LIT BECAUSE OF ERROR CODE B1181 WHICH, I WAS TOLD BY THE TOYOTA SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE, IS CAUSED BY A WORN SPIRAL CABLE. HE INFORMED ME THAT THIS PROBLEM COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE MY AIR BAGS TO NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. EARLIER THAT DAY, I HAD THE SPIRAL CABLE RECALL REMEDIED ON MY 2008 TOYOTA YARIS. THIS IS INCONSISTENT AND DANGEROUS TO FIX A PROBLEM IN ONE VEHICLE AND NOT IN ANOTHER. I'M ASKING THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE RECALL BE EXTENDED TO ALL APPLICABLE VEHICLES.

ALSO, BOTH FRONTAL AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS DEPLOYED INADVERTENTLY. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 15V043000 (AIR BAGS) AND 15V286000 (AIR BAGS). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 273,000.

TAKATA RECALL--I HAVE TRIED REPEATEDLY TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE MY AIRBAG REPLACED. I CAN NEVER GET AN ANSWER. I HAVE REPLIED SEVERAL TIMES TO THE TOYOTA SAFETY RECALL RESOLUTION TEAM AT 1-888-312-5994. THEY ALSO HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET AN ANSWER AND THEY'VE ADVISED ME TO CALL THE DEALERSHIPS DIRECTLY. THE LAST ATTEMPTS WERE MADE THIS MORNING AND THE RESOLUTION TEAM SUGGESTED I JUST DRIVE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO MAKE MY APPOINTMENT SINCE THEY WILL NOT ANSWER THE PHONE. WHY IS THIS SO INCONVENIENT? WHY CAN'T TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS ANSWER PHONES TO MAKE APPOINTMENTS AND MAKE THESE CHANGES? HOW CAN I GET THIS REPAIR DONE IN A TIMELY AND CONVENIENT FASHION?

SINCE THE RECALL OF THE AIRBAGS ON 2003 TOYOTA MY MOM HAS TRIED SEVERAL TIME TO GET THE AIRBAG FIX IN THE PONCE AND CAYEY TOYOTA SERVICE AND IN THREE OCCASION THEY TOLD HER THEY DON'T DO THAT JOB AND KEEP GIVING HER THE RUNAROUND AND MANY PHONE NUMBER TO CALLS. SHE HAS DONE HER PART BUT IT SEEM THE SERVICE COMPANY IN PUERTO RICO IS NOT DOING THEIR PART. THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS LITE UP AND DOESN'T GO AWAY. THE CAR IS UNDER MY NAME BUT MY MOM HAS HAD IT SINCE 2007. SHE LIVES IN P. O. BOX 579 ARROYO, PR 00714 AND I MOVED TO ORLANDO IN 2007
TAKATA RECALL ALL DEALERS I CONTACTED HAVE A "AT LEAST ONE MONTH, LIKELY TWO MONTH" WAITING LIST FOR THIS RECALL REPAIR. CONSIDERING THE NOTICE STATES "UNTIL THE REMEDY IS PERFORMED, WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT OPERATE THE VEHICLE WITH AN OCCUPANT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT," THE TIME FRAME SEEMS EXCESSIVE. THEY ALL NOTED IT WAS DUE TO A DELAY IN RECEIVING THE PARTS.
