I was trying to make right turn from Mcdonald's but suddenly, unintended acceleration, Tesla went into the intersection and hit the other side of car. - The emergency brake did not work and as a result of the accident , there was a severe damages in the front of the Tesla.
I was driving along Hwy 37/151 between San Antonio and Mission, Texas. The trip is long straight and flat highway. During the round trip, my Model Y had 5 episodes of phantom braking. Twice in auto-steer mode and thrice under regular cruise control. In each case there were no cars within meaningful proximity, and no debris or other obstruction that should trigger the brakes. In every case the car was running at 60-80 mph, and the braking ranged from light to near emergency stopping force. The incident that prompted this report was when I was crusing at 80mph when the brakes engaged. Within seconds, my speed dropped by nearly half in what seemed like a couple hundred feet. The car responded to my immediate use of the accelerateor, so I don't know how close to a stop I would've come. Had this happened with a car close dehind me I...
Yesterday updated Tesla car SoftWare version with 2023.26.7. Today, I am going to work with AutoPilot mode. Traffic was slowed down and stopped and car should apply the break automatically. However it didn't apply the break or slow down the Vehicle. I forcefully applied the break still car didn't stop fully and collided with in front of the car. I strongly believe, there was a bug in. new software version 2023.26.7
The car engaged breaks multiple times on an empty freeway while driving on the adaptive cruise control. There were no cars nor any objects on any lane. The breaking was so hard that I almost lost the control of the car. Luckily there were no cars behind. The problem might be sun related as it didn't happen at night
When in cruise control my car experiences phantom or ghost braking seemingly out of nowhere. It violently applies the brakes without any obstacle in sight. This has happened to me many times and always on the freeway in sunny conditions. Tesla needs to address this as it’s a common complaint and has likely led to or will lead to many rear end type accidents. Thank you.
When traveling on the highway at cruising speeds of 65mph or higher while in "cruise control" the car will suddenly slam the brakes on. Luckily there has not been any one close to me to cause a rear end collision. It seems to be random but there are times when it happens more often. On a two lane highway or if a car in front of me is slowing down to make a turn. One time a car entered the highway going in my direction from the shoulder and kicked up dust and debris. That seemed to confuse the cruise control and then it finally decided to slam on the brakes.. The only way to correct it was to press the accelerator. Sometimes the braking is severe and other time mild but always unpredictable.
On 30th July 2023 while driving on interstate 8 freeway while using the FULL self driving our vehicle applied auto brake without anyone around. This air rake was so strong that it slowed the vehicle from 75 mph to less than 50 mph in seconds. It scared everybody in the car. We took off the autopilot and applied the regular autopilot and it happened again two more times. Each time there was no vehicles around us and luckily no one was behind us.
On 8/1/2023, driving between Mojave, California and Inyokern, California on highway 14, a newly paved and striped highway being followed by a Mercedes Van, I was doing 70 in a 65 zone. No traffic in front of us. No road signs. No turn outs. No side roads. No bridges, overpasses or underpasses when suddenly the car braked from 70mph to 48mph before I pressed down on the accellerator to keep the Mercedes from hitting us. the front end of the Mercedes dipped as he hit the brakes hard and he honked his horn which is what I would have done under similar circumstances. In the next half hour we experienced the phantom braking phenomenon five more times before my wife found complaints about "phantom braking", a phenomenon we'd never heard of or had been warned about. We turned off the Automatic Emergency Braking and experienced no more events until after...
I recently purchased this vehicle less than a month ago and i have more than 15 Forward Warning collisions that come from nothing. Vehicles will be 100 yards out and my tesla thinks i am about to collide prompting the forward warning signal. I am driving passed the mailman and it thinks i will hit, my neighbors cars parked on the side of the road also prompts the message. This has caused my tesla insurance to rocket 30% more. I reached out to tesla, the car had a problem with the cameras pitch, alignment, and angle. However, they will not adjust my insurance despite the service center agreeing that the issue was with the vehicle.
Two phantom braking incidents on road trip from CA to UT Both on cruise control - NOT autopilot - No road obstacles or other vehicles present in both incidents 1st incident had road go from gray, older asphalt go to black new asphalt, which triggered a strong abrupt braking , jolting passengers 2nd incident - absolutely no obstacles or vehicles - random strong abrupt braking of vehicle stopped using cruise control after those two events - no more incidents
The car will sometimes brake hard for no reason, nothing in front of it
I have had many incidents of my Tesla Model Y Phantom braking. Traveling down the road using cruise control on a clear dry sunny day with proper lane markings not next to center dividing wall and no other vehicles in front of mine or to the sides my Tesla will suddenly apply the brakes for no apparent reason as if the car is detecting another vehicle or object ahead. The braking is sudden and aggressive with no warning. This could be extremely hazardous putting me at risk for a rear end collision at highway speeds. This has been a issue since the vehicle was new in February 2023. On a long trip you could get a few incidents in a hour then go for a long stretch with no problem. There does not appear to be a detectable pattern or situation for the phantom braking issue.
Problem: unintended acceleration On 05/30/23, the Tesla Model Y was parked in a parking spot, southbound facing a building. The car suddenly began to drive forward on its own and struck the curb, an AC unit, and a business office wall. No injuries, but the driver and people in the building (a dental clinic) panicked.
Location: car wash tunnel Symptom: ghost braking/shifting While in car wash mode and neutral, Tesla shifted inexplicably from neutral to park, causing Tesla to be rear-ended by the car behind in the car wash tunnel. My passengers and I could have been injured. Tesla engineers completed a technical review of the safety incident but refused to provide the full report instead directed me to consult lawyers. On the day of the service appointment, they did not even inspect my vehicle but instead told me to request vehicle data online. It turned out to be a waste of time to download vehicle recorded data that only Tesla engineers understand. The service invoice says, “Verified proper operation of the vehicle.” That is false. They did not even admit my car into the service entrance. This crash is preventable, but Tesla is not taking this defect seriously and refuses to share the full...
Car decelerates while on auto pilot 4-5 times while driving from Chicago to Alberta,CA vice versa.
While driving on the interstate at 85 mph on a straight flat road, with no other vehicles around, the car suddenly and violently braked. Car was in autopilot beta mode. However, this has happened before while only using cruise control. This happened twice only minutes apart. This issue is typically called phantom braking.
Approximately half a dozen times this year on highway journeys between California and Las Vegas, when the vehicle is on cruise control at approx. 70-75 mph, I have experienced brief instances of unnecessary, automated braking. Each time apparently in response to large black patches in front of the car, either a mismatched repair of the highway or a dark mirage type reflection of the sun on the highway. It appears to me that the vehicle cameras are occasionally mistaking these dark patches as an obstacle. Presumably lidar sensors would not react because the radar would not bounce back off anything, but I believe my car does not have lidar sensors. In each case there was an approximate 10 to 15 mph reduction in speed and then the vehicle quickly recovered. Fortunately, no other vehicle was tailgating me at the time but if one had been, I believe there is a...
To whom it may concern I was driving in a 2023 Model Y around 7:30 in the evening at less than 30mph. There was light rain in the area. As I was driving down a street in the metro Boston area, I noticed the car ahead of me had slowed and was stopping behind another car at a crosswalk. I had taken my foot off the accelerator and noticed that the car did not slow down at all and the regenerative braking did not function properly. Even as I attempted to brake, it seemed like the car would not stop in time. To avoid hitting the car in front of me, in a split second decision I swerved to the left so that I would avoid hitting any other car. My Tesla Model Y went over the median and struck a crossing light pole before coming to a stop. During...
on a recent 800 mile road trip, there were no less than 7 incidents of the vehicle suddenly braking on its own while on cruise control with no vehicles in front of us. one incident occurred with a semi truck behind us that almost caused an accident. the car went from 80 mph to 45 mph before I had time to react and press the gas pedal.
While driving down I-5 South between Bay Area and LA, the vehicle applied brakes and sounded a collision warning when there was no apparent vehicle/obstruction in front of the car. Tesla's Traffic Aware Cruise Control (TACC) was engaged at the time and the max speed was set to 75MPH. The speed reduced to ~60MPH before I intervened and pushed on the accelerator pedal.
I was traveling on IH-10 from San Antonio and El Paso, when I had multiple hard braking incidents for no reason at all. I had adaptive cruise control on. Multiple incidents also happened on my return trip. I took out emergency brake on my return trip and it seemed to work ok, except it resets the emergency braking after each stop and I forgot to take it out. That is when I had multiple incidents of breaking for no reason. On one segment of the trip, I had taken out the emergency braking but It did it again. It occurrs at speed limit speeds of 80, 75, and 65 MPH. Luckily, there were no accidents but they could have happened very easily. I do not feel safe at all in this vehicle.
Sudden unexplained Phantom Braking. Travelling on The Chisholm Trail Parkway tool road and while approaching an underpass the car suddenly applied brakes with no cars near me in front or to my sides. Fortunately there were no vehicles behind me. This similar situation also happened to me in my 2022 Model 3, so it is apparent that Tesla has not been able to resolve this long standing potentially serious traffic safety hazard.
while using cruise control there are sudden and unexpected violent decelerations even though there are no cars other obstructions. also the visialization sofware cuts out or does not come one leading to no blind spot warning, forward collision warning, or may safety features requiring the software.
While traveling on I70 from Columbia, Missouri to Grand Junction, Colorado and back, we experienced at least 30 incidents of sudden braking while in adaptive cruise control. Some of the incidents were rapid, causing the car to lose 20 to 30 mph within a second. For the most part these occurrences of sudden braking happened on open highway with no other vehicle within 1/2 mile in front of us. We discussed this issue extensively with Telsa and no resolution was provided by Tesla. In fact, one service agent stated that we should just be happy that we were driving a Tesla and that eventually Tesla may solve the problem.
Hard braking on its own while using cruise control. Nearly rear-ended multiple times.
Drove thru multiple states in spring and Tesla autopilot would come to abrupt sudden slow down without warning. Bad enough that I would disable the system and drive manually. This problem occurs regardless of one lane or two lane roads. With or without cars in front or behind me. Sunny or cloudy skies. Hot or cold. Straight or windy roads. With autopilot or even adaptive cruise control. I have no faith in the system. At one point it even changed lanes without warning almost hitting another car.
My Tesla has experienced several phantom breaking occurrences while on the highway where autopilot engages break aggressively when there is no collision possibility and almost caused rear end collisions into my car. Very terrifying and this needs to be addressed.
While driving on the freeway at a speed of 72 MPH thr speed limit was 75 MPH used cruse control no vehicles are onfront of me and it did a sudden brake and went to 0 luckily escaped from life threat behind me other vehicle was their that driver handled well if not it would have effected worse. Happend couple of time since I was new Tesla I thought I was not handling properly serious life threat issue scared to drive
Vehicle experienced phantom braking while on the highway. Vehicle was travelling at 85mph while Autopilot was engaged - hands were on steering wheel and no warnings were flashing. Vehicle experienced rapid braking/deceleration with no objects in front of vehicle - road was empty and no other vehicles were around. Incident occurred on 07/04/2023 @ 0544hrs MST. Vehicle displayed no warning signs during incident. This has occurred multiple times in the past while Autopilot was engaged.
The cat keeps applying brakes on its own even when there is no obstacle on road. Car applies brake on highway when there is no car on road in front or on side road. It is a very dangerous fault and is an accident waiting to happen. I have complained to local service center many times. They call it Fantom Braking and say that Tesla is working on it. If so, all Teslas should be off road till such time they fix it. I am concerned that it will lead to fatal accidents.
I was driving using "auto-pilot" for speed control while going 70mph my vehicle randomly braked hard for no reason (maybe a cloud shadow) causing the vehicle behind me to swerve into the shoulder. I just bought the car 3 weeks ago and am very disappointed that the vehicle doesn't come standard with cruise control that won't cause accidents. This is a recurring issue with using autopilot in my vehicle. I don't feel safe and will be contacting tesla next. Although I doubt they will be of much help.
On every trip in my 2023 Model Y there is phantom braking for no reason with no cars in front of or around me. It happens on the highway on perfectly clear days, with no hills, no signs, no shadows or bridges, with no cars in front of me or behind me on completely straight roads in addition to happening when there are other vehicles around. I will be traveling at highway speeds and the car slows enough to be terrifying and throw objects around the car. I have stopped using cruise control and auto pilot because I’m scared of the car. I reported the problem to Tesla on the phone and through their app the first time it happened multiple times on one trip and they said that they looked at the logs and that it didn’t happen. Since my family was with me in the vehicle, I have...
Multiple moments of phantom braking 15+ times TODAY driving from North Platte, NE to Havelock, IA on cruise or auto pilot. Extremely dangerous, could've caused pile ups/rear end collisions. Screen would 50% of the time show a semi or vehicle in front of me when nothing was there. I tried cleaning the windshield, thought it helped for a bit then it happened again. This happened on both interstate driving and highway driving into the sun and not into the sun. Could be very hazardous - very abrupt emergency braking at interstate speed limits. at the Shelby, IA super charger, another Tesla owner expressed he had also just reported multiple phantom braking incidents today as well and reported it to Tesla.
On a trip to Prescott, AZ and back to Los Angeles, I encountered the following problem about 5 separate times. While driving at freeway speeds (70-80mph), the car suddenly and violently, without warning, applied the brakes vary hard (with no input from me). This threw me forward while the car continued to decelerate. In one instance, there was a class C motorhome traveling behind me fairly closely as if to pass. This was on a 2-lane road in the Arizona “countryside.” It was between 6:20am and 7:15am on Saturday, May 13th. The motorhome following me had to make a split-second decision to either crash into the rear of my car, or swing out left into the oncoming lane. He chose the latter. Fortunately, there was no oncoming traffic or it surely would have been a fatal, head-on accident between the motorhome and a car traveling in the opposite direction in...
While driving and using the cruise control the car suddenly braked hard. On some occasions we lost 20 mph before reacting and applying pressure to the accelerator. At other times we only lost 3 mph before the car corrected itself. We had perhaps 15-18 incidents in less than 2 hours. We tried switching off the AEB system but that did not help. In all cases there were on I-25 between Pueblo and Trinidad and there were no cars within a few hundred yards of us. It was sunny and about 75 all day. I've since read about "phantom braking" with Teslas and that sounds like exactly what was happening. The vehicle is currently with the dealer for repairs.
Phantom braking in cruise control almost caused being rear ended. This happens all the time! Super dangerous
While the cruise control was engaged and traveling on a two lane road, the adaptive cruise control kicked in when it sensed a bicycle on the side of the road. There was an immediate hard braking applied by the car. Had there been a vehicle behind us we would have been rear ended. A few days later under very similar circumstances on a two lane road the brakes were applied by the vehicle. There were no other cars in sight - we were the only ones on the road. The only logical conclusion is the adaptive cruise control thought that the skid marks that were on the road was an obstacle that it braked for. Again, if there had been a vehicle behind us there would have been a collision. We contacted Tesla service in Reno, Nv. , advising of the above and requesting the adaptive cruise be disabled. We...
Phantom braking while using cruise control on interstates. The automatic emergency braking caused severe slowdown reducing speed of vechicle from 75-55mph. On a 900 mi road trip phantom braking occured a minium of 12 times each direction. Sudden and unexcpeted braking nearly caused accidents on numerous occasions. As vehichles following were not expecting a sudden reduction in speed without cause. In no case was there an obvious trigger, so signs, shadows, debris, or any logical explanation for the dangerous sudden reduction in speed. Tesla service center in Madison, WI stated it was most likley 'just' a software issue. Tesla is not responsive to conerns and gravity of situation. Tesla service said they would inspect vehicle cameras but that would take several weeks, offered no loaner car, and dissmissed any cause for concern repeating the issue was simply a software issue that required drivers to better report 'bugs' and that more...
Automatic hold disabled. I had multiple instances where automatic hold was disabled. If driver isn’t paying attention to screen it is hard to know and car rolls back on wheel. Earlier when I encountered this issue vehicle was rolling back and my wife caught this issue.
My Tesla Model Y is experiencing phantom braking, due presumably to a faulty collission avoidance safety system. With cruise control enabled (not autopilot with lane keeping, only cruise control by depressing the stalk once vs. twice for lane keep) the car will phantom brake, where it slams on the brakes thinking their is a vehicle in its path when there is no vehicle in the front lane. This has happened to us on a clear toll road in Southern California on Hwy 73, both on June 7th, 2023 and in April/May 2023, where the Tesla slams on its brakes, decelerating us from 65mph to 38mph and below (at which point I slammed the accelerator pedal to avoid a rear end collission), with vehicles directly behind us, almost causing a dangerous accident. This happened with my three children in the back seat. We have experiencing this phantom braking twice in the...
This is regarding “phantom braking.” Whenever I engage adaptive cruise control invariably the car will slam on the brakes at random times. Typically on a 350 mile drive I experienced roughly 4 instances. In conclusion I deem this feature too dangerous to use unless the interstate is relatively empty of traffic.
At 10 AM on a sunny day on Sunday driving on a highway at ~68 MPH on autopilot, car suddenly applied the breaks causing it to stop but I applied accelerator to prevent rear end accident. Accident avoided because road didn’t have much traffic.
While using Tesla's Adaptive Cruise Control on the highway, the car's Automatic Emergency Braking system applied brakes and decelerated rapidly with no obstacle on the road, as if an immanent crash was about to happen. The risk was greatest when it happened with a car traveling behind us and didn't anticipate my car braking since there was no reason to do so. My wife and I felt like we could be rear-ended. This happened several times over many days traveling across the country. On June 5th, at about 8:30 AM Mountain Time, I called Tesla Service. I called to learn if this could be fixed. I spoke with the front line employee, and than escalated my call and spoke to the supervisor. Both said the car was acting as intended, that this happens with all versions of auto pilot, and there was no way to fix it. Even when I...
The contact owns a 2023 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH with the Adaptive Cruise Control or Autonomous Self Driving feature activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,008.
The Adaptive Speed Control will randomly, abruptly decelerate the vehicle for absolutely NO reason. This certainly is safety item if a car were following me. With the Tesla set in the "Hold" setting for regenerative battery charging purposes, this is the same as slamming on the brakes. Also, this vehicle now only utilizes cameras for sensing everything and it falls short in this area. Other times this happens includes: Orange cones in construction areas, a vehicle crowding the center line in multi-lane highways and also, vehicles traveling the same direction ahead of you in a curve. In these instances, cameras and or computers processing the camera information is getting it wrong...
Car under adaptive cruise control braked hard after changing lanes from behind another vehicle to an open lane with no traffic. Went quickly from 65 to 20 mph until driver started accelerating manually
Phantom braking at highway speed. Maybe a shadow or line on the road confuses the system and slams on brakes. Is more common if the cruise is engaged. Happens every day. My commute is about 30 miles happens once or twice every drive. Increases risk of being rear ended. The car is not FSD enabled.
I drive in West Texas, no hills but some rises and slopes, mostly flat. Going from Odessa to Lubbock (5AM) maybe 2 phantom braking episodes. Coming back on a clear, sunshiny day I experienced 15-20, out of the blue. Scared me to death. No cars within 100 yards, just BAM and it braked. Another 6-7 when the car thought a car over taking me was a problem and braked or one coming in a two lane (just about 5 miles only) thinking there was a danger. We are talking about excellent 4 lane highways with excellent pavement and markings.
We upgraded our auto pilot to the advanced auto pilot system and when driving from Denver to Santa Fe the Tesla would brake abruptly without notice or reason. The braking reduced speed by at least 30-40 mph in a matter of a second or two. This occurred 6 times during this drive. The concern is if this happens when other cars are driving behind our car, it will cause a collision.
This has been a consistent on-going issue with my brand new 2023 Tesla Model Y. While using Autopilots Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and the Autosteer feature the car will without warning begin braking. Each time is different in regards to severity of the breaking but it is typically like letting off the accelerator pedal which in a Tesla is comparable to significant breaking. Have taken two highway road trips and on both trips, the phantom breaking has occurred multiple times. Some of the incidents the car would go from 75MPH to 45MPH in a matter of seconds. From research done, this "Phantom Breaking" is a serious issue that Tesla says is due to software issues and not hardware issues. Our safety was put at risk because the person behind us might not be paying attention when cruising on open road, during daylight, etc and could rear-end our car. There have been...
