The contact owns a 2009 Nissan 370Z. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the steering wheel locked up, and the contact was unable to start the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the residence, where a mobile mechanic diagnosed the vehicle with steering module failure. The contact called the dealer to schedule an appointment, and the dealer informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under Nissan Voluntary Service Campaign Number: P3208; free of charge, because the vehicle had already been previously repaired under the Voluntary Service Campaign. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact the vehicle history did not display the completion of Nissan Voluntary Service Campaign Number: P3208, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 176,000.
I PURCHASED MY FIRST NISSAN, A 2009 370Z, IN 2018. I WENT TO START MY CAR AND IT WOULD NOT START, AFTER READING VARIOUS FORUMS ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THE ISSUE WITH THE 370Z IS WELL DOCUMENTED TO THE ESCL (ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK) ISSUE. THERE IS NO WARNING TO THIS OCCURRING; I DROVE MY CAR TO THE STORE AND THEN HOME, AN HOUR LATER WENT TO START TO THE CAR AND IT WOULD NOT START. THE ONLY LEAD I HAD WAS THE INTELLIGENT KEY WARNING LIGHT, THAT WHEN REFERENCED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL STATES THIS WILL LOCK THE STEERING COLUMN AND PREVENT THE CAR FROM STARTING. THIS IS USUALLY TRIGGERED FROM AN UNREGISTERED KEY BUT MY KEYS WERE REGISTERED AND HAD WORKED WITH THE CAR FROM THE TIME I BOUGHT IT. MY VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL) THAT LOCKS THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED AND TURNED OFF TO HELP PREVENT THEFT. ON SOME VEHICLES, DUE TO A MANUFACTURING IRREGULARITY,THE ESCL MAY MALFUNCTION AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN LOCKED AND COULD PREVENT THE ENGINE FROM STARTING. THIS CONDITION, SHOULD IT OCCUR, WILL ONLY OCCUR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, WHICH HAPPENED WITH MY NISSAN 370Z YESTERDAY. THANK GOD I WASN;T STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. AND LUCKILY THIS DID NOT HAPPEN IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION OR OTHER BUSY ROAD. MULTIPLE 370Z FORUMS CONFIRM THAT THE 2009-10 370Z MODELS HAVE THE SAME ISSUES AS THE RECALLED NISSAN MODELS....
I PURCHASED MY FIRST NISSAN, A 2009 370Z, IN 2009. AS OF TODAY THE CAR HAS HAD FOUR (4) ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCKS (ESCL) INSTALLED. THE ESCL THAT NISSAN USES IS DEFECTIVE, WHICH RESULTS IN LEAVING THEIR CUSTOMERS STRANDED. THIS, IN MY OPINION IS UNCONSCIONABLE. THE LATEST FAILURE OF THE ESCL LEFT ME STRANDED OUT OF TOWN. I HAVE NO FAITH THAT THE FOURTH ESCL WILL BE ANY BETTER THAN THE PREVIOUS THREE THAT NISSAN HAS INSTALLED. IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED THAT THE ESCL THAT NISSAN USES IS MALFUNCTIONING. THE INTERNET IS FULL OF STORIES OF PEOPLE STRANDED IN UNSAFE AREAS DUE TO THIS DEFECTIVE PART. NISSAN CLAIMS TO HAVE FIXED THIS ISSUE BUT CLEARLY THEY HAVE NOT. MY CAR WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEMS STARTING, HOWEVER THE ESCL THAT NISSAN HAVE INSTALLED WILL NOT ALLOW IT TO START. NISSAN WILL NOT ALLOW MY CAR TO START UNLESS I PAY THEM...
I GOT INTO MY STATIONARY VEHICLE AND WHEN I PUSH THE START BUTTON IT REMAINED IN THE LOCK POSITION. THE STEERING LOCK SENSOR LIGHT WAS ON AND IT WON'T CHANGE INTO THE ACC OR ON POSITION. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME, FIRST TIME THE DEALERSHIP HAD TO FIX IT.

MY CAR EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE AND THE NISSAN DEALER REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE PART ON 12/2/2013 AT NO CHARGE. IN NOVEMBER, 2017, MY CAR EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. IT WAS REPAIRED AT THE SAME NISSAN DEALER, PERFORMING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE EXACT SAME PART, ON 11/17/2017 AT A COST TO ME OF $1,153.40. NISSAN HAS REFUSED TO COVER THE REPLACED (DEFECTIVE) PART STATING: 1) THEY COMPLIED WITH THE RECALL CAMPAIGN BY REPLACING THE INITIAL FAILED PART WITH A SECOND (DEFECTIVE) PART, AND 2) THE SECOND (DEFECTIVE) PART WAS BEYOND ITS 12 MONTH WARRANTY. IN BOTH CASES, THE DEFECTIVE PART DISABLED THE VEHICLE FROM STARTING, THUS CREATING THE NEED TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE ELECTRIC STEERING WHEEL LOCK MECHANISM HAS FAILED BAD. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE PART, BUT NISSAN REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT. MANY COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED ON THIS ISSUE.

ON JANUARY 13, 2016, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TIGHT, SEIZED, AND WAS UNABLE TO BE TURNED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000.

RESEARCH INDICATED THAT THIS PART IS BASED ON A FAULTY DESIGN THAT HAS SUBSEQUENTLY BEEN REMOVED FROM LATER MODEL YEARS BUT DUE TO THIS DEFECT AND FREQUENT FAILURE RATE I EXPECT TO HAVE TO REPLACE IT ANNUALLY AT A COST OF OVER $500 PER INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY DISABLED WHEN THIS PART FAILS REQUIRING THE VEHICLE TO BE TOWED TO A SERVICE STATION AT OWNER'S EXPENSE. I HAD THE INFAMOUS "STEERING LOCK FAILURE." IT HAS YET TO BECOME A RECALL AND RECOGNIZED AS A FAULT BY NISSAN, YET THE FIX IS $700+. I GOT IN MY CAR AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN MY CAR ON ONLY TO GET 0 RESPONSE, WHATSOEVER. AFTER I DROVE CAR FOR 5 MINUTES, I PARKED THE CAR FOR 40 MINUTES. WHEN I TRIED TO START THE CAR, NOTHING HAPPENED. THE CAR HAS A PUSH BUTTON START AND WHEN I PRESSED IT, NOTHING HAPPENED. PARKED CAR WHILE GETTING LUNCH, TRIED TO RESTART CAR AFTERWARDS AND IGNITION WOULDN'T CYCLE (WONT GO TO ACC OR ON, STAYS AT LOCK). INDICATOR LIGHT IMPLIED KEYFOB NEEDED TO BE INSERTED INTO THE SLOT. UNLIKE MOST REPORTED FAILURES, THIS ONE FAILED WITH THE STEERING WHEEL UNLOCKED (MECHANISM NEVER ENGAGED), HOWEVER IT WOULD STILL NOT START. PARTS CAME IN AT $719 AND LABOR AT $259. HAD I BEEN MADE AWARE OF THESE COSTS BEFORE THE WORK WAS DONE, AS I REQUESTED IN A VOICEMAIL LEFT FOR THE DEALER, I WOULD NEVER HAVE AGREED AND WOULD HAVE DONE IT MYSELF. DROVE MY CAR TO WORK. UPON TRYING TO LEAVE WORK, THE FOB KEY UNLOCKED THE CAR, BUT THE CAR DISPLAYED A KEY WARNING LIGHT INDICATED NO FOB DETECTED. I INSERTED THE FOB INTO THE INTELLIGENT KEY SLOT TO THE LEFT OF THE STEERING WHEEL, NO LUCK. I TRIED A BACKUP FOB (WITH GOOD BATTERIES), AND EVEN JUMP STARTING THE CAR...STILL NO LUCK. HEADLIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHTS WORK INDICATING POWER TO THE VEHICLE. APPARENTLY A DEFECTIVE STEERING LOCK SOLENOID FAILED AND CAUSED CAR TO CEASE TO START OR OPERATE AND WAS LEFT STRANDED. UPON RESEARCH ONLINE THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR 2009 FOR MANY MANY PEOPLE. THIS IS UNFORTUNATE BECAUSE NISSAN DOESN'T COVER THIS PART AFTER MOST OF THE REPORTS I READ ONLINE FAILED (36,000+ MILES) OUT OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD COSTING CONSUMERS $1,000+ IN REPAIR PLUS COST TO TOW AND EXTRA FOR A RENTAL IF NEED BE. *TR
VEHICLE WON'T START BECAUSE THE STEERING LOCK MALFUNCTIONED. THIS IS A VERY WELL DOCUMENTED ISSUE WITH THE 370Z, AND PEOPLE IN FORUMS WEREN'T SURPRISED AT ALL ABOUT THE ISSUE. THIS RENDERS THE CAR INOPERABLE SINCE IT WON'T START. NISSAN THEMSELVES SEEM TO BE AWARE OF THE ISSUE, SINCE 2012 AND UP MODELS OF THIS CAR DON'T EVEN HAVE THE STEERING LOCK ANYMORE. BUT EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE A RECALL HASN'T BEEN ISSUED. I HAD READ ABOUT THIS ISSUE BEFORE I EVEN BOUGHT THE CAR SINCE IT SEEMS TO BE VERY COMMON. IN HINDSIGHT I WISH I HAD EDUCATED MYSELF MORE ON THE SUBJECT TO TAKE PREVENTIVE MEASURES SINCE THIS ISSUE IS SO COMMON AND SO EXPENSIVE TO FIX (PART COSTS NORTH OF 500 DOLLARS). DROVE TO 7/11 TO GET GAS. TURNED THE CAR OFF. WHEN I GOT BACK IN THE CAR TO LEAVE THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THERE WAS AN AMBER KEY ON THE DASHBOARD. THERE HAVE BEEN A MAJOR NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS FILED FOR THIS SAME REASON. THE IMMOBILIZER LOCKED OUT THE WHEEL SHAFT WHICH LOCKED OUT THE KEY FAUB. I PARKED TO GET GAS AND WHEN I WENT TO START MY VEHICLE, IT DID NOTHING. CHECKED BATTERY AND EVERYTHING ELSE TO MY KNOWLEDGE THEN HAD IT TOWED TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE "STEERING WHEEL LOCK HAS GONE BAD." TOWING COST WAS $65 AND TOTAL COST OF REPAIR WAS $1198.50. MY CAR FAILED TO START AFTER ON 3 1/2 YEARS OF OWNING IT. DROVE TO THE GROCERY STORE AND PARKED. UPON RETURN TO CAR IT WOULD NOT START. WINDOWS AND LOCKS WORKED BUT THAT WAS IT. THE YELLOW KEY LIGHT STAYED ON AND THE CAR WAS DEAD IN THE WATER. CALLED NISSAN AND THEY SAID TO CHECK THE BATTERY AND IF THAT WAS NOT IT THE CAR WOULD NEED TO BE TOWED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN 370Z. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AND HE WAS UNABLE TO UNLOCK THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION, FAILED TO START AFTER A ROUTINE STOP. A FAULTY STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT (SLCU)RESULTING IN THE STEERING WHEEL FAILING TO DISENGAGE FROM THE LOCKED POSITION THUS PREVENTING THE PUSH BUTTON IGNITION SYSTEM FROM STARTING THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE PUT IN NEUTRAL, BUT ONLY AFTER ACCESSING A COMPARTMENTED SHIFT LOCK SWITCH. UNFORTUNATELY, WITH THE STEERING WHEEL BEING LOCKED, THE VEHICLE COULD ONLY BE PUSHED FORWARD OR BACK AND NOT TURNED. THIS PROVED TO BE A PROBLEM AS THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WAS FORCED TO "DRAG" THE VEHICLE TO A BETTER POSITION IN ORDER TO BE LOADED ONTO THE FLAT BED. NISSAN SHOULD DEFINITELY TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FAULTY EQUIPMENT AS THIS LEAVES CARS AND OWNERS STRANDED. FOR A RELATIVELY NEW CAR THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING ESP. UNDER 36,000 MILES.
