ON MY 2011 JEEP WRANGLER RUBICON UNLIMITED (LHD) DASHBOARD, THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT FLASHES ON EVERY OTHER MINUTE WITH A CHIME, AN INDICATION THAT THERE IS SOMETHING MALFUNCTIONING OR INTERFERING WITH THE VEHICLE'S AIRBAGS.THIS HAS BEEN A RECURRING ISSUE AND CONCERN FOR MANY 2007 AND NEWER JEEP WRANGLER (LHD) OWNERS, INCLUDING MYSELF, AND HAS BEEN SHOWN TIME AND TIME AGAIN TO BE CAUSED BY A FAULTY CLOCKSPRING WITHIN THE VEHICLE'S STEERING WHEEL. THIS FAULTY CLOCKSPRING IS THE CULPRIT FOR POTENTIAL AIRBAG FAILURE IN THE JEEP WRANGLER (LHD) DURING AN ACCIDENT OR PREMATURE DEPLOYMENT WHEN SIMPLY DRIVING AROUND. DAIMLER CHRYSLER HAS REFUSED TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY CONCERN OF THEIR FAULTY CLOCKSPRING THAT CAN CAUSE FAILURE OF THE VEHICLE'S AIRBAGS FROM PROPERLY DEPLOYING.

I WAS DRIVING MY 2011 JEEP WRANGLER ABOUT 5-8 MPH WHEN I HEARD A POP TYPE OF NOISE. I THEN SAW A FLAME UNDER THE HOOD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY THROTTLE LOCKED UP AND MY CAR WOULDNT STOP. I HAD BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKES, BUT MY TIRES KEPT SPINNING. INITIALLY THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROL BUTTONS FRO THE COMPUTER WOULD NOT FUNCTION. THEN LOST THE FOLLOWING: INTERIOR LIGHTS, ALL SWITCHES IN THE SWITCH BANK, HEATED SEATS, ELECTRONIC TRACTION CONTROL, HILL DESCENT ETC. STOPPED WORKING. DEALER CHECKED IT OUT SAID THAT IT WAS A BAD TIPM. IT IS GOING TO COST $850 TO REPLACE BUT IT IS ON NATIONAL BACK ORDER, SO NO ESTIMATION AS TO WHEN IT COULD BE REPLACED. I CALLED THE DEALER AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO BRING IT IN. WHILE DRIVING TO THE DEALER THE JEEP STARTED TO SHAKE HORRIBLY WHEN ACCELERATING (DUE TO ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH THE FUEL PUMP). THE DEALER SAYS THAT I NEED A NEW TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER CONTROL MODULE (TIPM). THE COST IS WELL OVER $1000 (THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY). WHEN I SEARCHED TIPM PROBLEMS ON-LINE I FOUND THAT CHRYSLER HAS TONS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS BUT THE ONLY ISSUED A RECALL ON A FEW VEHICLE MODELS AND WRANGLER WASN'T INCLUDED. THE PROBLEM WAS A FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE WIRING HARNESS , MANY OTHER WIRES, COMPARTMENT PLASTICS ,AND GAS LINE. THE CAUSE APPEARS TO BE HOT OIL FROM THE TRANSMISSION DIPPING ONTO THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION . I ONLY SEE THAT THE FILL TUBE ON THE TRANSMISSION WAS THE LEAK. IN DEC 2011, MY DAUGHTER DROVE HER NEW (3000 MILES) 2011 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED TO CHURCH, PARKED IT, TURNED OFF THE KEY, TOOK THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION, EXITED THE VEHICLE AND LOCKED THE DOOR, AND WENT INTO THE CHURCH BUILDING - NEVER REALIZING THAT MOTOR WAS ACTUALLY STILL RUNNING!! (THEY'RE VERY QUIET WHEN IDLING AND SHE WAS TALKING TO A FRIEND.) TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE STARTED THE VEHICLE BY USING THE PUSH TO START FEATURE. THE CONTACT THEN OPENED THE FRONT DRIVER'S DOOR AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR WAS ON FIRE. THE WAS ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO THE DEALER, BUT THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TOW THE VEHICLE BACK HOME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND AN INVESTIGATOR WAS SENT TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE INVESTIGATOR STATED THAT THE FIRE ORIGINATED NEAR THE HEATED MIRROR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE DEALER WAS WAITING ON REPLACEMENT PARTS TO ARRIVE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO RECEIVE A RESPONSE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 16,000.

I WENT TO A JEEP JAMBOREE ON THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 17TH AND AS I WAS DRIVING TO GO WASH MY JEEP MY JEEP FIRST SPEED UP AND I COULDN'T GET IT TO SLOW DOWN THEN I SMELLED A BURNING SMELL AND THEN DASHBOARD STARTED HAVING TROUBLE LIGHTS COME ON SO I GOT IT OFF THE HIGHWAY AS I EXITED THE HIGHWAY I SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD SO I STOPPED IMMEDIATELY AND OPENED THE HOOD AFTER SHUTTING IT OFF AND SAW IT COMING FROM THE MAIN FUSE BLOCK GRABBED SOME TOOLS TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BUT BY THEN IT STARTED TO BURN SO I POURED WATER ON THE FUSE BLOCK PUT IT OUT AND CALLED A TOW TRUCK TOOK IT TO TRI STAR JEEP IN UNIONTOWN, PA THEY GOT IT FIXED AFTER ALMOST 2 WEEKS AND ON THE WAY HOME IT STARTED AGAIN AND I CAUGHT IT...
