My 2013 Honda CRV completely broke down in late August 2025, as I was backing out of my driveway. Our lives were at risk. This could have happened in traffic, causing a terrible collision. My local Honda dealership found the chain guides broken and the timing off, and recommended replacement of several parts (timing chain, guides, tensioner, exhaust cam, rockers, and ... VTC actuator). Initially, they thought the cause was a lack of proper maintenance, specifically, infrequent or improper oil changes. I knew we had taken proper care of our car, so I began investigating. The check engine light was on for at least 2 years (as well as the rattling at start-up), and I had not gotten clarity on it until recently, after consulting with multiple professionals. Finally, a Jiffy Lube tech said it was due to the VTC actuator. I then brought my car to the Honda dealership...
Service Bulletin 16-012 was issued for 2013 CRV for the VTC actuator. This is obviously an issue that Honda is aware of but is refusing to fix. I’ve had to replace this part twice at the same interval of time. The first replacement was covered under my warranty however now that I am out of warranty this repair costs almost 3,000$. I contacted American Honda who refuses to provide good will even though they are aware this is a known issue. I was advised that if this wasn’t repaired it would be a safety issue. I believe this should be covered on Hondas dime especially if this has to replaced multiple times at no fault of the customer.
VTC rattles on startup. Please email me at [XXX] so we can start another lawsuit against Honda. This is a known problem that everyone from honda to your backyard mechanic are aware of. The Honda CRV is skipping/stuttering/juddering when accelerating between 25-45 mph. This has caused an issue when pulling out onto a highway. The mechanic advised me to have the VTC Actuator checked. Looking on line there is not a recall, but there are several safety bulletins and lawsuits connected to this issue. My vehicle was purchased used.

Engine rattles loudly for 2 seconds on cold start-up. The rattle started in 2021 at 90k miles, used to be intermittent but since 2022 it occurs every cold start-up. Two different mechanics have diagnosed the problem as a VTC defect requiring replacement, based on Honda’s TSB bulletin, which diagnoses the rattle as a defective VTC. No warning indicator lights have ever appeared for this issue. The cost to replace the VTC is $1200. A class action lawsuit has been filed for this very issue (JULY 5, 2023 case 3:23-CV-01238) - it states that a 2011 study showed that the VTC defect can stretch the vehicle’s timing chain and cause premature failure of the timing chain tensioner, and that damage to these internal engine components can cause catastrophic engine failure and lead to accidents. Honda should be held responsible for selling vehicles with defective parts, and owners should not have to...
The vehicle stutters when travelling 30-35 miles per hour. It has done this since I bought the vehicle. I have taken it to the Honda dealership to correct and to another mechanic. The Honda dealership say it's a problem Honda has not sent a recall on and they don't know how to fix it. It is also a hot topic on many forums regarding this vehicle.
Engine makes rattling sound on cold start-up. VTC actuator found to be defective by Honda mechanic and replaced. Vehicle vibrates/shudders when at a stop. Mechanic also found timing chain was off by one tooth and was fixed. Vibration/shuddering continues despite repairs. Vibration is noticeable on front seats. Concerned about engine and safety as engine causes seats to vibrate.
I don't know what's wrong with it, it has been shuddering on low speeds. I just bought it yesterday and I'm devasted that I just got a 16,000 car and the same night I'm driving it and it's doing this. I have done research and this is no doubt a defect in many other people's car. This needs to be addressed how is this not a serious defeat and safety issue. You start off or pull out from a red light and it doesn't want to go, this IS a safety/accident concern. Please respond and please help. Honda has always been one of the best vehicles I have owned 5 in my lifetime, but I seen many many reviews with people pleading for Honda to fix this issue and they are turning their backs...not good for Honda to say the least. The contact owns a 2013 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving 25-35 MPH, the vehicle started shuddering inadvertently. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
VEHICLE STATIONARY. VARIABLE TIMING CHAIN ACTUATOR (VTC ACTUATOR) STARTED TO GRIND UPON ENGINE STARTS AT 90K. HAD THE VTC REPLACED FOR $700 AND WITHIN A YEAR IT FAILED AGAIN CAUSING THE SAME GRINDING NOISE UPON ENGINE STARTS. DEALER THEN REPLACED THE TIMING CHAIN AND TENSIONERS FOR $1200 SAYING THAT WAS THE ISSUE CAUSING THE NOISE. NEXT MORNING THE CAR IS MAKING THE SAME GRINDING NOISE. TOOK BACK TO DEALER BUT APPARENTLY THEY CANNOT REPRODUCE THE SOUND. VIDEO RECORDED THE SOUND TO SEND THEM. HONDA IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE: TSB 16-012 I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW IN 2013 AND HAVE ONLY HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED AT HONDA. I SPENT OVER $2000 TRYING TO HAVE THIS FIXED AT THE DEALER AND THE ISSUE IS NOT RESOLVED. I WANT TO SELL THIS VEHICLE BUT CAN'T ALLOW SOMEONE ELSE TO BUY A DEFECTIVE CAR.
ONE COLD WINTER MORNING, MY ENGINE LIGHT, POWER TRAIN AND STEERING WHEEL WARNING SIGNS ALL TURNED ON. I HAD CHECKED MY OIL AND IT WAS STILL 40% FULL. I STARTED NOTICING THAT THE CAR WAS MOVING SLOW NOT MORE THAN 20MPH. ALSO THE GAS GALLON INDICATOR WENT FROM 36MPG TO 20MPG. IT IS BURNING WAY MORE GAS THAN IT WAS. I STARTED RESEARCHING AND FOUND OUT THAT OTHER CONSUMERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I'M WRITING THIS BECAUSE I WANT OTHER PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEIR HONDA CR-V MODEL. I KNOW IT IS NOT SAFE FOR ME TO BE DRIVING THE CAR AROUND ESPECIALLY IN THE HIGHWAY. THE CAR MOVES SLOWER THAN IT USUALLY DOES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SEVERAL INDEPENDENT MECHANICS WHERE ALL FOUR TIRES WERE REPLACED; A TIRE ROD WAS REPLACED; THE WHEELS WERE BALANCED AND ALIGNED; AND THE BRAKES WERE REPLACED. DESPITE THE NUMEROUS REPAIRS, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE CONTACT THEN SPOKE WITH HAGERSTOWN HONDA (10307 AUTO PL, HAGERSTOWN, MD 21740) ABOUT THE FAILURE AND WAS REFERRED TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT ANY REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE WOULD BE AT HER OWNS EXPENSE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 110,000.
MY COMPLAINT IS THAT HONDA IS REFUSING TO COVER THE COSTS OF KNOWN PROBLEMS IN THEIR VEHICLES. THE ISSUE IS THE VCT ACTUATOR WHICH RESULTS IN A VERY LOUD METALLIC RATTLING ON A COLD START. I HAVE HAD THE VCT ACTUATOR REPLACED TWO TIMES. THEY DIDN'T WANT TO COVER THE SECOND TIME AS IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BUT THE DEALER FINALLY DID. IT THEN OF COURSE HAPPENED AGAIN. I ALSO HAD A SECOND KNOWN PROBLEM, (JUTTERING, WHICH IS A VIBRATION/SHAKING WHILE DRIVING/ACCELERATING AT LOWER SPEEDS) WHICH THEY FIXED ONCE, AGAIN, IT ALSO CAME BACK. LAST YEAR THE DRIVE SHAFT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND NOW ONCE AGAIN, THE VCT ACTUATOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. AGAIN, THIS IS A KNOWN HONDA PROBLEM THAT THEY REFUSE TO FIX AT THEIR EXPENSE. THIS HAS AFFECTED A LOT OF PEOPLE, JUST READ THE MESSAGE BOARDS WHICH ARE FULL OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE....
A SURGE, VIBRATION, OR JUDDER MAY BE FELT WHILE DRIVING UNDER LIGHT ACCELERATION
LAST WINTER, MY CAR WOULD MAKE A RATTLING NOISE EVERY TIME I STARTED THE CAR. I READ ONLINE THAT DURING COLD WEATHER, THIS COULD HAPPEN. NOW THE SPRING AND SUMMER HAVE GONE BY AND THE RATTLING STILL CONTINUES EVERY TIME I START MY CAR AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN IDLE FOR A LITTLE BIT. I HAVE FURTHER READ THAT THE VTC ACTUATOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED HOWEVER, I AM STILL SEEING REPORTS THAT THE RATTLING REAPPEARS AFTER A COUPLE MONTHS EVEN AFTER REPLACING IT. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT AND SHOULD BE FREE TO REPLACE (VS PAYING 800 DOLLARS) CONSIDERING IT DOESN'T GUARANTEE TO FIX THE ISSUE.

BROUGHT IT IN AND THEY SAID 'THEY KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS'. PICKED UP THE VEHICLE AND WITHIN A SHORT TIME THE NOISE CAME BACK AGAIN. THIS WENT ON. I GOOGLED AND FOUND THE THE TIMING CHAIN WAS A CHRONIC ISSUE IN THESE VEHICLES. FEELS LIKE ITS LOOSE. I BROUGHT IT INTO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD ITS THE TIMING CHAIN AND SHOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY. CAN YOU HELP? LOTS OF THESE CARS ARE RECALLED BUT MY PARTICULAR VIN ISN'T ON THE LIST WHICH IS VERY PECULIAR.

THEN DEALER REPLACED AUTO BELT TENSIONER WITH NO RESULTS. NOISE IS LOUD AND TURNS PEOPLES HEADS AS I BACK UP OR TAKE OFF. IVE READ MANY SIMILAR STORIES FROM OTHER CRV OWNERS. DEALERS UNABLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.
DURING LIGHT ACCELERATION THERE WAS A SHUDDERING AROUND 20-30 MPH. IT LESSENED AFTER I DECELERATED. IT CONTINUED FOR AROUND 8 MONTHS OR LONGER. I HAD IT CHECKED BY A NEARBY MECHANIC. HE PRINTED OFF SOME INFORMATION TO HAVE THE SOFTWARE UPDATED AND TO TAKE IT THE A HONDA DEALER. I CALLED THE CLOSEST, DEALERSHIP FOR AN APPOINTMENT. I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD DO A DIAGNOSTIC TEST, COSTING ME $120 AND THEN PINPOINT THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD REPLACE THE FLUIDS EVEN BEFORE I EXPLAINED THE ISSUE. AFTER 3 1/12 HRS AND OVER $500 DOLLARS I WAS ON MY WAY HOME. BREAKDOWN ON THE BILL. LABOR AMT $490 PARTS $69.14 AND OF COURSE $39.13 TAX. I FEEL THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE SITUATION. I KNOW THERE ARE MANY OWNERS OF HONDA CR-V HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AND THAT HONDA HAVE NOT STEPPED UP AND TOOK RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ISSUE,...

FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS THE ENGINE MAKES A LOUD GRINDING NOISE WHEN I START IT. MOSTLY IN COLDER WEATHER. I'VE DISCUSSED THIS WITH ANOTHER HONDA CR-V OWNER AND THE SAME THING STARTED HAPPENING WITH THEM.
I HAVE A 2013 HONDA CRV AT ABOUT 65,000 MILES. THE VSA, EPS, AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON ALL AT THE SAME TIME. I NOTICED THAT THE CAR WAS RUNNING ROUGH WHILE IDLE AND WOULD NOT PICK UP AFTER STOPPING. I RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND NOTATED THAT IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE FOR THE TIMING CHAIN TO STRETCH. I HAVE BEEN METICULOUS ABOUT MAINTENANCE ON MY VEHICLE. NOTABLY TIMING CHAINS SHOULD LAST THE ENTIRE LIFE OF THE ENGINE. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP AND BEEN ADVISED THAT INDEED THE TIMING CHAIN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE VTC ACTUATOR (NOTABLY ANOTHER COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE MODELS). THE PRICE TO FIX THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS CONSIDERING THE LOW MILES AND METICULOUS MAINTANCE BY THE HONDA DEALERSHIP. ENGINE MAKES LOUD GRINDING NOISE WHEN STARTING COLD SIMILAR TO WHAT OTHERS HAVE DESCRIBED AS THE VTC ACTUATOR PROBLEM. CAR HAS 83,000 MILES ON IT. FYI.....THIS IS MY SECOND HONDA CR-V.....I TRADED IN THE LAST ONE AT 78,000 MILES WHEN IT WAS DOING THE SAME THING!!!
DRIVER ON HIGHWAY WHEN CHECK ENGINE, MALFUNCTION INDICATOR AND EPS LIGHTS CAME ON. THE CAR LOST POWER AND DRIVER PULLED OFF TO SIDE. CHECKED CAR, RESTARTED CAR BUT WOULD NOT GO OVER 20MPH. CAR TOWED AND MECHANIC REPORTED #4 SPARK PLUG OIL FOULED, BUT NO PSI IN #4 CYLINDER. TOWED TO DEALER BUT PROBLEM NOT FIXED AND ENGINE NOT RUNNING. DEALER DID NOT OFFER ANY HELP.

THE HONDA CR-V 2013 WE PURCHASED ON 7/3/18 HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING A VIBRATION WHILE IN MOTION BETWEEN APROX 10 MPH -30 MPH. IT TOOK PLACE ON CITY, TOWN AND COUNTY ROADS WE HAVE NOT DRIVEN ON HIGHWAY YET. IT VIBRATES SIMILAR TO DRIVING OVER RUMBLE STRIPS IN THE HIGHWAY TO INFORM YOU OF LANE EDGES.IT SEEMS TO STOP IF YOU LET THE FOOT OF ACCELERATOR PEDAL. IT IS SOMEWHAT UNNERVING AND CAN BE A LITTLE SCARY TO OUR YOUNG DRIVER.

ON MARCH 11, 2017, I WAS TRAVELING FROM FORT LAUDERDALE TO NAPLES FLORIDA ON INTERSTATE 75. I HAD THE CAR ON CRUISE CONTROL AND TRAVELING AROUND 70 MPH. I TOOK THE CAR OFF CRUISE CONTROL AND THEN PRESSED ON THE GAS WHEN THE CAR'S ENGINE DEACCELERATED THE CAR SEVERELY. I PRESSED AND LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES AS THE CAR CONTINUE TO DEACCELERATE AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WITH AN 18-WHEELER. A SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCE HAS ALSO OCCURRED BUT AT 10-20 MPH WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A RED LIGHT AND NEEDING TO TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND THEN PRESS DOWN ON THE GAS TO CONTINUE. THE ENGINE CONTINUES TO RUN BUT DOES NOT ACCELERATE THE CAR. IF THE HIGH SPEED CONDITION OCCURS AGAIN, I WILL NEED TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL TO STOP THE CAR'S ENGINE FROM SEVERELY DEACCELERATING THE CAR.

IT IS NOW JANUARY OF 2018, CAR NOW HAS 90355 MILES AND THE RATTLE NOISE HAS RETURNED. WILL TAKE THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THIS WEEK TO SEE WHAT WILL BE DONE NEXT. FROM WHAT I HAVE RESEARCHED, HONDA HAS NOT COME UP WITH A REAL FIX. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR SEVERAL YEARS FOR PREVIOUS MODELS. COME ON NHTSA, PUT SOME HEAT ON THESE GUYS.
PULLED INTO DRIVEWAY AND WAS A COUPLE OF FEET AWAY FROM THE GARAGE DOOR, GOING ONLY ONE OR TWO MPH,PUT FOOT ON BRAKE TO STOP AND SUDDENLY THE CAR LURCH FORWARD,PRESS AS HARD AS I COULD ON BRAKE PEDAL,BUT CAR KEPT MOVING FORWARD TILL IT HIT GARAGE DOOR,THEN EVERYTHING STOPPED. WHILE COMING HOME INTO MY DRIVEWAY AS I CAME UP THE DRIVEWAY I WAS STOPPING BY A THE FRONT DOOR THE CAR SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD JUST BEFORE I CAME TO A FULL STOP,AND HIT GARAGE DOOR, WHICH SHOOK ME UP AS MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, I HAD PUSHED THE PEDAL HARD BUT STILL THE CAR MOVED FORWARD, AFTERWARDS WE MOVED THE CAR BACK AND YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE FRONT TIRES ARE SPINNING FORWARD AND THE REAR TIRES ARE LOCKED UP SLIDING FORWARD SHOWING THAT INDEED MY FOOT WAS PRESSING HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THEM, THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. SPORADIC GRINDING NOISE AFTER SETTING OVERNIGHT. TOOK TO DEALER, THEY SAID WOULD HAVE TO HEAR IT BEFORE THEY COULD DO ANYTHING. LEFT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY. NO SATISFACTION ON MY PART. STILL DOES IT. IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY WHEN TAKEN IN, BUT IS OUT OF WARRANTY NOW.

DEALERSHIP SAYS IT'S THE VTC ACTUATOR AND IS A KNOW PROBLEM BUT NOT RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. THEY WANT 500 BUCKS TO FIX THE ISSUES SINCE CAR OF COURSE ISN'T UNDER WARRANTY AND WON'T WORK WITH ME AT ALL. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL IN MY OPINION OF HONDA WITH AN ISSUES THAT IS KNOW AND COMMON.

JUDDER, AKIN TO DRIVING ON THE RUMBLE STRIPS ALONGSIDE A HIGHWAY. HAPPENS WHEN SLOWLY ACCELERATING BETWEEN 20-30 MPH. PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 10/2016.
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. NO OIL LEAK AND NOT BURNING OIL. MECHANIC NOTED EXCESSIVE OIL USE WHEN HE SAW IT WAS 2 QUARTS LOW ON OIL WITHIN 3 MONTHS USE AFTER A OIL CHANGE. MECHANIC FOUND NO CAUSE FOR THIS SO IT MUST BE INSIDE THE ENGINE OR DRIVE TRAIN. CAR IS USED FOR LOCAL FLAT DRIVING. NO TOWING, RACING, MOUNTAINS, ETC.
AWFUL GRINDING NOISE AT A COLD START NO MATTER WHAT THE WEATHER IS. CAR IS IN MID ATLANTIC REGION. EACH START COMES WITH A GRINDING NOISE. MECHANIC CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. NONE OF MY OTHER CARS NOT MAKE SUCH A HORRENDOUS NOISE AT START UP. THIS SOUND WAS NOTICED NOT LONG AFTER THE CAR WAS PURCHASED LATE 2014.
2013 HONDA CRV SHAKES AT SPEED 30-45 MPH DURING ACCELERATION. SHAKES SOMETIMES GOES AWAY WHEN FOOT IS REMOVED MOMENTARILY AND GAS IS REAPPLIED. ALREADY MADE ATTEMPT TO HAVE ISSUE FIX AT DAYTONA HONDA DEALERSHIP, TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS FLUSHED AND FUEL INJECTORS CLEANED. SHAKING RETURNED AFTER A FEW WEEKS.
ON THE FIRST START OF THE DAY, ESPECIALLY COLD DAYS, THE ENGINE MAKES A LOUD GRINDING/RATTLING NOISE. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THAT THERE ISN'T A FIX FOR THE ISSUE. IT CLAIMS THAT IT IS A DESIGN FLAW AND DOESN'T HURT THE ENGINE. ACCORDING TO THEM, THE OIL DRAINS FROM THE PART OVERNIGHT AND THE "NOISE" IS CAUSED BY LACK OF OIL TO THAT PART. AS SOON AS THE PART GETS OIL IT STOPS. (ABOUT 2-3 SECONDS) ACCORDING TO RESEARCH I'VE DONE ON THE INTERNET, THE ISSUE HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR SEVERAL YEARS WITHOUT A FIX AND IS SOMEWHAT COMMON. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN APRIL AND DIDN'T EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM UNTIL LATE FALL. IT TOOK ME MONTHS TO PROVE TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM.SHAME ON HONDA. I'VE OWNED HONDA CARS AND HAVE BEEN LOYAL TO HONDA FOR 25 YEARS, BUT NO LONGER.
