2018 HONDA ACCORD Steering Problems

While driving, the power steering warning came on and the steering wheel became extremely tight, making it very difficult to turn. This has happened more than once, most recently on December 8, 2025. The loss of steering assist occurred while the vehicle was in motion and created a serious safety concern. The dealership retrieved diagnostic code C1250-52, which indicates an internal malfunction of the electric brake booster ECU. The steering issue and warning occurred again after the initial diagnosis. The system appears to fail intermittently and without warning. I have owned multiple Honda Accord vehicles over the years and have never experienced anything like this. Sudden loss of steering assist while driving is a safety defect, and similar issues have been reported by other owners of 2018–2022 Honda Accord models.

During interstate driving vehicle detected both road departure and engaged the emergency automated braking. The vehicle attempted to correct the "road departure" by steering the vehicle away from the perceived problem and engaged the brakes nearly causing a collision as it has done numerous times before. I have reported this to NHTSA and American Honda and await a repair of this dangerous issue. Honda has opened a case on this but have had 6 months and no response has been issued.

I recently experienced a power steering failure on my 2018 Honda accord 1.5t sport. When going to pull into a parking spot when turning my wheel to the left the power steering failed leaving me on the road. More specifically the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. They sent me a quote for $6,233.73. As I was unable to afford this I looked Into this issue. During regular driving, the vehicle engine will stall and lose power, with 9 different warning lights coming on and ALL advanced driver assistance systems becoming disabled, and I believe ABS brakes being disabled as well. This is due to cylinder 3 misfires and the problem is intermittent, but the loss of power can come on randomly and is dangerous on highways as you have to pull over due to the sudden loss of engine power, restart the car, and hope the problem temporarily goes away. A loud clicking/knocking noise that sounds dangerous while steering the vehicle at low speed; such as turning into a parking spot or making a u-turn. After this car was repaired by the body shop, all the automatic systems in the car started flashing and no one could figure out why. It went to four different repair shops over several months, till finally they convinced me to purchase another vehicle when this one was going to be paid off in two months. This problem was well documented by several repair places , and ultimately since it was unrepairable I had to trade it in and got bottom dollar for a non-running car that I owned since the beginning and got screwed.

I bought this vehicle 8-25-2021. It had 22,000 miles on it. It now has 46,000 miles on it. I was feeling a vibration while driving. 7-31-2022 coming back from Louisiana into Texas I had a flat. When my husband removed the back tire to place the spare on, the tire was absolutely eaten up on the inside wall. There were chunks of rubber missing from the tire and we looked at other rear tire and it was worn beyond repair. When driving this car at any speed above 30 mph the steering wheel sticks when attempting to turn or make any steering adjustments. THE STEERING BECOMES HARDER THAN NORMAL TO INITIATE A TURN OF THE STEERING WHEEL. AFTER APPLYING MORE PRESSURE THAN NORMAL, THE STEERING WHEEL WILL SUDDENLY MOVE CAUSING A LARGER THAN DESIRED STEERING CORRECTION. BECAUSE OF THE EXTRA-LARGE STEERING CORRECTION ANOTHER CORRECTION WILL BE NEEDED IN THE OTHER DIRECTION, BUT THE STEERING RESIST TURNING IN THE OTHER DIRECTION UNTIL EXTRA FORCE IS APPLIED TO THE STEERING WHEEL, THEN THE STEERING WHEEL WILL SUDDENLY MOVE AND CAUSE AN OVERCORRECTION IN THE OTHER DIRECTION. ELECTRONIC STEERING RACK PART HAS A MANUFACTURING FAULT THAT CAUSES THE STEERING WHEEL TO LOCK UP AND THEN OVERSTEER, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, CAUSING VEHICLE TO LEAVE THE LANE AND A MASSIVE SAFETY ISSUE. DURING A 400 MILE HIGHWAY ROAD TRIP IN NOVEMBER 2019 MY 2018 ACCORD STEERING STARTED TO STICK. IT FEELS LIKE YOU HAVE TO BREAK A HITCH TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN THE CENTER OF THE ROAD. THE CAR HAS AN ISSUE THAT WHEN YOU DRIVE LONGER DISTANCES IT DEVELOPS A 'STICK-SLIP' FEELING ON THE STEERING, E.G. IT TAKES A LITTLE BIT MORE EFFORT TO OVERCOME THE FORCE IT TAKES TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO KEEP THE CAR CENTERED IN THE LANE. OTHERS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE HAVE REPORTED THE SAME BEHAVIOR. I DO HAVE A SECOND, IDENTICAL VEHICLE WHICH SHOWS THE SAME BEHAVIOR.

THIS SOMETIMES HAPPENS WHEN ATTEMPTING TO FOLLOW A LEFT OR RIGHT CURVE OR WHEN KEEPING THE CAR IN THE LANE ON A STRAIGHTAWAY. THE PROBLEM IS MUCH LESS APPARENT WHEN LKAS IS ENGAGED. PROBLEM APPEARED ON 2018 ACCORD AT APPROX 10,000 MILES. PROBLEM APPEARED SUDDENLY AND WAS NOT PRECEEDED BY ANYTHING OUT THE ORDINARY. PROBLEM SO FAR OCCURED 2 DAYS CONSECUTIVELY. PROBLEM SHOWS UP AT SPEEDS ABOVE 40 MPH AND AFTER CAR HAS BEEN AT THAT SPEED FOR OVER APPROX 3 MINUTES. AT SPEEDS UNDER 40 MPH THE PROBLEM DOES NOT EXIST.

AT ONLY 4,200 MILES MY 2018 HONDA ACCORD SPORT 1.5L TURBO BEGAN HAVING AN EXTREMELY ANNOYING STEERING ISSUE. IT IS NOTICEABLE AT ALL SPEEDS, BUT IS TRULY SIGNIFICANT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE STEERING NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED ABOUT EVERY 10 SECONDS, MOVING IT SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT, THEN 10 SECONDS LATER, SLIGHTLY TO THE LEFT, OVER AND OVER AGAIN FOR THE ENTIRE TRIP. AT HIGHER SPEEDS THE STEERING WHEEL IS "STICKING" WHEN DRIVING STRAIGHT. IT BECOMES "FROZEN" AND REQUIRES AN ADDITIONAL BIT OF FORCE TO ADJUST THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS MAKES HIGHWAY DRIVING VERY ANNOYING (AND SOMEWHAT DANGEROUS). THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN AT HIGHER TEMPERATURES.

STEERING WHEEL STICKS WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. FIRST NOTICED ON A LONG TRIP FROM VIRGINIA TO NJ AND THOUGHT IT WAS A ONE-TIME THING. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM CONTINUED ON THE RETURN TRIP. PROBLEM PRESENTS ITSELF INITIALLY AS THE STEERING WHEEL SEEMS "FROZEN" IN PLACE. TO CORRECT THE NORMAL DRIFT, DRIVER MUST "BREAK" THE STEERING WHEEL FREE FROM THE FROZEN POSITION TO CORRECT THE DRIFT. WHEEL WELLS BUILDING UP WITH ICE/SNOW CAUSING VEHICLE TO VIBRATE WHILE OPERATING (LIKE OUT OF ALIGNMENT) AND HINDERING THE TURNING OF THE VEHICLE LEFT OR RIGHT BECAUSE TIRES ARE HITTING THE ICE/SNOW BUILDUP ON WHEEL WELL.THE TIRES WHEN COLD ALSO BEHAVE AS IF ROAD IS SLIPPERY, BOTH IN ACCERALATION/STOPPING EVEN THOUGH ROAD MAY BE DRY.
