1998 HONDA ACCORD COMPLETE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 91,150 MILES. INCIDENT BELOW RESULTED IN NEAR COLLISION WHEN MY VEHICLE PULLED OUT TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE MORE THAN APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH. OTHER VEHICLE HAD TO SLAM ON BRAKES TO AVOID SIDE COLLISION. I HAVE A 1998 HONDA ACCORD LX, 4- DOOR, 4 CYLINDER, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. AT APPROXIMATELY 91,000 MILES, I NOTICED THAT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION STARTED TO "SLIP" SHIFTING FROM FIRST GEAR INTO SECOND GEAR, ESPECIALLY RIGHT AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS JUST STARTED. THIS ISSUE WOULD GET WORSE UNDER MEDIUM TO HEAVY ACCELERATION. I HAVE A 1998 HONDA ACCORD. I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN NOTICING THAT IT HAS BEEN SHIFTING ROUGH OR LIKE IT HAS LOST POWER. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING AND AFTER STOPS OR ATTEMPTING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE FEELS LIKE IT'S LOST POWER AND THEN LUNGES FORWARD. O ALSO JUST GOT A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WITH THE ERROR CODE FOR THE TORQUE CONVERTER. I HAVE READ THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND COULD CAUSE SOMEONE TO GIVE THE VEHICLE TOO MUCH THROTTLE DO TO THE LACK OF POWER WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IS DEPRESSED. 1998 HONDA ACCORD EX-V6. TRANSMISSION FAILURE. 1. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND SUDDENLY THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO DISENGAGE AND RE-ENGAGE BY ITSELF AND THEN LOCKED THE TRANSMISSION. 2. BEFORE THE FAILURE, I STARTED TO NOTICE THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE AROUND 55,000 MILES. I BROUGHT IT TO HONDA DEALERSHIP AT AROUND 60,000 MILES AND THEY JUST REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION OIL. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM WAS JUST GETTING WORSE. 3. AFTER THE TRANSMISSION LOCKED UP, I ALMOST LOST CONTROL, I HAVE TO PUT THE TRANSMISSION TO NEUTRAL AND HAD IT TOWED TO HONDA DEALERSHIP. I DRIVE A 1998 HONDA ACCORD EX V6 WITH 140,000 MILES. AS OF THE END OF DECEMBER, 2009; THE VEHICLE'S GEARS WOULD NOT ENGAGE WHEN PUTTING IT INTO 'DRIVE'. A RECALL RELATED TO THE FAILURE WAS FOUND, BUT THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE DEALER REPAIRED THE BALL JOINTS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 154,112. UPDATED 07/29/08. *LJ RECALL # 99V069000. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE TRANSMISSION MADE A GRINDING NOISE WHEN IT WAS IN GEAR. THE TRANSMISSION HAD A LEAK AS WELL. UPDATED 07/29/08

I BOUGHT MY 1998 HONDA AT THE SAN FRANCISCO HONDA DEALERSHIP IN SAN FRANCISCO AND DID ALL OF MY MAINTENANCE WORK AT THEIR SHOP. IT HAS 70,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS HAD NO SERIOUS PROBLEMS. ON SUNDAY I WAS CROSSING THE BAY BRIDGE FROM OAKLAND INTO THE CITY AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AND THE ENGINE REVVED LIKE I WAS IN A DRAG CAR RACE AND LURCHED FORWARD AND LOST POWER AND THEN ACCELERATED VIOLENTLY ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE BRIDGE. I WAITED FOR 1 1/2 HOURS AND THEN WAS INFORMED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS BAD BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $205.00 IF I WANTED IT FIXED BECAUSE IT HAD ALREADY BEEN FIXED. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - IT STARTED OUT SLIPPING AND JERKING REALLY BADLY WITH A 2-3 SECOND DELAY OR MORE. I'VE HAD THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT AND WE ARE STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. *NM
98' HONDA ACCORD SEDAN- WE PURCHASED IN NOVEMBER OF 2004 AND VEHICLE HAD 44,000 MILES. AFTER A FEW WEEKS OF DRIVING, TRANSMISSION WAS BEGINNING TO SLIP BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND GEARS. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED WE NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. I CALLED AMERICAN HONDA AND THEY AGREED TO PUT IN A REBUILT TRANSMISSION EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A FEW THOUSAND MILES OUT OF WARRANTY. WE PAID FOR THE LABOR. VEHICLE IS NOW AT 88,000 MILES AND NEEDS ANOTHER NEW TRANSMISSION. SAME PROBLEMS AS BEFORE. CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA AGAIN AND THEY REFUSE TO HELP. *JB
THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN MY CAR STARTED WITH HESITATION DURING COLD STARTS AS DESCRIBED BY NUMEROUS OTHER HONDA 98 ACCORDS. IT WOULD GET OUT OF PARK AND INTO 1ST GEAR JUST FINE, BUT WHEN GETTING OUT OF 1ST AND INTO 2ND, THE RPMS WOULD JUST SHOOT UP AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD CATCH THE 2ND GEAR 2-5 SECONDS LATER. IN THOSE 2-5 SECONDS, THERE WOULD BE NO POWER TRANSFERRED TO THE FRONT WHEELS. THE CAR IS SO JERKY THAT SOMETIMES I SPIN OUT ON MY FRONT TIRES. THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN LOOKED AT BY HONDA, BUT THEY WANTED $5,000 FOR THE REPAIR; THE ENTIRE VALUE OF THE CAR. WE TOOK IT TO AAMCO AND THEY DID THE REPAIR FOR 2,200. WE'VE BEEN INTO THEIR SHOP TWICE NOW IN THEIR 1 YEAR WARRANTY, BUT THE HESITATION HAS COME BACK. THE CAR HAS ONLY 82,000 MILES ON IT AND I DON'T DRIVE IT...

MY 1998 HONDA ACCORD 2.3L WITH ONLY 117K MILES DEVELOPED TRANSMISSION SHIFTING ISSUES THAT WOULD EITHER LEAVE ME WITHOUT POWER BY SLIPPING OR DROP ME FROM 4TH GEAR SUDDENLY INTO 2ND. THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 1998 HONDA ACCORD V6 STARTED FAILING AT 116K MILES. THE CAR BEGAN MISSING OUT AND THEN LURCHING FORWARD WHEN DRIVING, CREATING A VERY UNSAFE SITUATION.
