I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BIKE AND THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT I HAD TO JUST BREAK IT IN. I HAD OTHER PERSONS RIDE IT AND TOLD ME THAT PERHAPS IT WAS THE THROTTLE AND OR FUEL INJECTOR. I CALLED AND COMPLAINED AGAIN AND THEY SAID THAT I NEEDED TO JUST RIDE IT MORE AND GET USE TO IT. I SAID IT WAS LOSING POWER AND MAYBE THE INJECTOR WAS CLOGGED. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO THEN SAID THAT BECAUSE IT'S UNDER A WARRANTY AND THE FUEL INJECTOR IS COMPUTERIZED THAT THE BIKE SHOULD BE LOOKED AT BY THE DEALER. I CALLED THE DEALER AGAIN AND EXPLAINED TO THE TECH WHAT I WAS TOLD. HE SAID WE WILL MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. AT ABOUT 70 MILES ON A FULL TANK OF GAS, MY XG750, WHEN STOPPING AND GOING IT FELT AS THOUGH IT HAD NO POWER AND THEN SURGED. THIS HAPPENED EVERYTIME I STOPPED AND WOULD GO. THE FUEL LIGHT WOULD FLICKER ON AND OFF BUT WOULD GO OUT ONCE IT STOPPED SURGING. I STOPPED AND FILLED UP THE GAS TANK. ONCE FULL THE SURGING STOPPED. AFTER THAT I WAS AFRAID TO RIDE OVER 50 MILES WITHOUT GETTING MORE GAS. THIS PAST SUNDAY I WAS JUST PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY WHEN IT OCCURED AGAIN. I WAS JUST AT 60 MILES AND WAS GOING TO GET GAS. THIS TIME IT SURGE WHILE I WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN. THE SURGE CAUSED THE BIKE TO JUMP AND I STARTED TO LOSE CONTROL. THE MOTORCYCLE ,STALLS FROM A STOP AND THEN ACCELERATES VERY FAST ,THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE BIKES IS LOW ON FUEL , BUT LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHT IS ON. IT IS VEY DANGEROUS. I PURCHASED MY HARLEY DAVIDSON XG750 ON JULY 23RD AND PICKED IT UP ON JULY 24 WITH ZERO MILES ON THE ODOMETER. ON SUNDAY JULY 26 THE FUEL LIGHT CAME ON WITH APPROXIMATELY 98 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE NEXT DAY JULY 27 WHILE RIDING THE XG750 IT BEGAN TO SURGE FORWARD AND STALL WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP IN FIRST GEAR. IT GOT PROGRESSIVELY WORSE 2 MORE TIMES WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. I DROVE TO A GAS STATION AND FILLED THE TANK UP WITH SHELL 87 OCTANE FUEL. IT TOOK 1.819 GALLONS. ODOMETER READING WAS 102 MILES. ON JULY 30 WITH 166 MILES ON THE ODOMETER THE FUEL LIGHT CAME ON WHILE IN ROUTE TO WORK. AFTER WORK ON MY WAY TO A HARLEY DAVIDSON SERVICE CENTER. THE GX750 BEGAN TO STALL AND ACCELERATE FROM A STOP IN FIRST GEAR. I CHECKED THE FUEL TANK AND IT WAS...
UPON REACHING APPROXIMATELY 95-100 MILES ON A TANK OF GAS I EXPERIENCE ISSUES WITH FUEL DELIVERY AND ENGINE OUTPUT. THE MOTORCYCLE LOSES POWER AND IS NON-RESPONSIVE, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN WILL SHOOT FORWARD AS IT RECEIVES FUEL AGAIN. THIS COULD CAUSE LOSS OF CONTROL OR A MULTI-VEHICLE ACCIDENT DUE TO THE UNKNOWN RESPONSIVENESS. THE PROBLEM GETS PROGRESSIVELY WORSE, AND AFTER ABOUT 10-15 MILES OF THE SYMPTOMS THE FUEL LIGHT IS THEN TRIGGERED. THE ISSUE DOES NOT HAPPEN WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FULL, BUT ONLY AFTER USING APPROXIMATELY 1.6 TO 2.0 GALLONS OF GAS (OR 95-100 MILES OF DRIVING). I BELIEVE THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL PUMP CAUSING A LOSS OF SUCTION CAUSING THE BIKE TO ACT ERRATICALLY. I HAVE SPOKE WITH MANY OWNERS OF THE SAME BIKE AND THEY HAVE ALSO HAD THE SAME ISSUE. MANY HAVE HAD THEIR FUEL PUMPS REPLACED BUT STILL EXPERIENCE THE...
THE BIKE SURGES WHEN SHIFTING GEARS, DUE TO FUEL PUMP NOT OPERATING PROPERLY. IT WILL START A LOWER SPEEDS, THEN BEGIN TO HAPPEN AT HIGHER SPEEDS. 2 FUEL PUMPS HAVE BEEN PUT INTO THE BIKE AND THE ISSUE STILL HAPPENS.
WHILE DRIVING AT A STEADY 35 MPH OR SO, THE BIKE SUDDENLY LOST ENGINE POWER (AS IF I CLOSED THE THROTTLE) THEN WITHOUT WARNING IT OPENED RIGHT BACK UP AND LUNGED ME FORWARD AS IF I SUDDENLY TWISTED THE THROTTLE OPEN AGAIN. THIS HAS HAPPENED BOTH TIMES I GOT LOW ON GAS BUT BEFORE THE GAS LIGHT CAME ON! THERE WAS STILL QUITE A BIT OF GAS IN THE TANK. AND WHEN I FILL UP, THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARS UNTIL I DRIVE ANOTHER 75 MILES OR SO.
AT ABOUT 81 MILES ON THE TRIP ODOMETER FROM A FULL TANK THERE WAS HESITATION WITH ACCELERATION IN 1ST GEAR TURNING RIGHT FROM A STOP UP A SLIGHT INCLINE. BY 91 MILES ON THE TANK, ANY HARD ACCELERATION WAS FOLLOWED BY HESITATION THEN SURGE. THIS HAPPENED IN ANY GEAR NOT JUST IN 1ST. BY 98 MILES ON THE TANK THERE WAS SO MUCH HESITATION AND SURGE THAT IT FELT TOO DANGEROUS TO RIDE. THIS IS THE SECOND COMPLAINT REGARDING THIS ISSUE (PRIOR COMPLAINT NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10721410) IN SPITE OF THE FUEL PUMP ALREADY BEING REPLACED BY HARLEY DAVIDSON LESS THAN A MONTH AGO FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. REPLACING A DEFECTIVE PART WITH ANOTHER DEFECTIVE PART IS NOT AN ADEQUATE SOLUTION TO A POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM.
MY XG750 WAS LOW ON FUEL. WHEN LEAVING FROM A STOP, AT A STOP & GO LIGHT IT FELT AS THOUGH IT HAD NO POWER CAUSING ME TO TURN THE ACCELERATOR MORE. THEN IT GOT FUEL CATCHING ME OFF GUARD AND LEAPED OUT INTO TRAFFIC.NO ONE WAS HURT BUT I FEEL THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES NOW ALWAYS WHEN THE FUEL IS LOW.
**THIS IS MY SECOND COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS** THE ISSUE HAPPENED THE FIRST TIME AT 86 MILES ON THE MOTORCYCLE. IT WAS FIXED AT ABOUT 500 MILES. NOW AT 996 MILES IT'S BACK. THE ISSUE HAPPENS WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STOP. THE MOTORCYCLE ALMOST DIES BECAUSE IT ISN'T GETTING FUEL, THEN IT GETS FUEL AND LURCHES FORWARD. THERE IS STILL OVER A GALLON OF FUEL IN THE TANK AND THE LOW FUEL LIGHT WAS NOT ON AT THE TIME. I ALMOST CRASHED AND COULD HAVE BEEN HURT OR KILLED BY THE TRAFFIC COMING UP BEHIND ME. THE FIRST TIME THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT'S A FAULTY DESIGN AND THE PICKUP COMES OFF CAUSING IT TO NOT PICKUP FUEL PROPERLY. IT APPEARS THE REPLACEMENT CAME APART ALSO. THE LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED FEW MINUTES BEFORE THE INCIDENT. THE INCIDENT HAPPENED AT A RED LIGHT ON A 55 MPH ROAD. I WAS FIRST IN LINE IN MY LANE. I ATTEMPTED TO PROCEED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN. I ROLLED MAYBE A FEW INCHES AND THE BIKE LOST ALL POWER, FOLLOWED BY AN IMMEDIATE SURGE OF POWER. THIS HAPPENED 3 TIMES WHILE TRYING TO CROSS THE INTERSECTION. MY PASSENGER AND I WERE ALMOST THROWN FROM THE BIKE. IT FELT AS IF EVERY TIME THE FUEL SLOSHED BACK AND FORTH THE SURGE AND STALL WOULD HAPPEN.
THE MOTORCYCLE'S ENGINE KEEPS LOOSING POWER THEN REGAINING IT SUDDENLY WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP IN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR, ESPECIALLY GOING UPHILL. THIS SEEMS TO BE RELATED TO THE FUEL LEVEL AS AROUND THAT TIME THE FUEL LIGHT WAS LIGHTING UP INTERMITTENTLY.
I'VE BEEN RIDING MOTORCYCLES FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW. WENT FOR A RIDE ON FRIDAY THE 26 OF JUNE ON THE ISLAND I LIVE ON WITH A FRIEND. I WAS ON A 25 MILE SPEED LIMIT ROAD APPROACHING A DOWN HILL TURN TO THE LEFT. I ENTERED THE TURN MAINTAINING COVER ON BRAKES AND CLUTCH. AS I STARTED LEANING THE BIKE INTO THE TURN THE MOTORCYCLE SURGED THE FUEL BY CUTTING OFF AND COMING BACK ON RAPIDLY GIVING ME TOO MUCH TORQUE. I TRIED BRAKING AND DOWN SHIFTING CAUSING MY REAR WHEEL TO LOCK UP AND SENDING ME SIDEWAYS INTO THE GUARD RAIL. THE MOTORCYCLE LAGS AND LEAPS WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STOP OR WHEN ACCELERATING QUICKLY. IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME SEVERAL TIMES AND I HAVE ONLY HAD THE BIKE A FEW WEEKS. I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW. THE FOLLOWING EVENT OCCURRED PREVIOUSLY AT A LOWER MILEAGE AT LEAST ONCE, BUT I ATTRIBUTED IT TO MY INEXPERIENCE. I AM A BEGINNER AT RIDING. FROM A COMPLETE STOP, I ACCELERATED SLOWLY DOWN MY GRAVEL DRIVEWAY TOWARD THE PUBLIC STREET. AS I ACCELERATED AND LEANED LEFT SLIGHTLY TO FOLLOW THE PATH OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE MOTORCYCLE STALLED MOMENTARILY AND THEN IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATED RAPIDLY. I GRABBED THE FRONT BRAKE AND PRESSED DOWN ON THE REAR BRAKE SIMULTANEOUSLY AND THE BIKE SLID AND LAID DOWN. AFTER RECOVERING AND ASSESSING THE SITUATION, I RODE CAUTIOUSLY ON THE PUBLIC STREET TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION AND TOPPED UP THE TANK. AFTER RIDING SEVERAL MILES AND UPON COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AT A STOP LIGHT, I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE AT THE INTERSECTION AND THE BIKE AGAIN STALLED MOMENTARILY AND THEN ACCELERATED RAPIDLY. THE SAME STALLING OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES AT THE SAME AND MULTIPLE SUCCESSIVE INTERSECTIONS. AT NO TIME DID THE LOW FUEL INDICATOR APPEAR LIT ON THE BIKE. AT LAST FAILURE, THE BIKE HAD ROUGHLY ONE-HALF TANK OF FUEL....
FROM A COMPLETE STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE WHILE TURNING RIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION AFTER STOP LIGHT CHANGED. THE BIKE SEEMED TO STALL MOMENTARILY AND THEN RECOVER, THEN STALL AGAIN AND RECOVER AGAIN. THIS HAS SINCE BECOME A REGULARLY OBSERVABLE PATTERN WHEN THE GAS TANK IS PARTIALLY FULL BUT NO LOW FUEL INDICATOR LIGHT DISPLAYS. TOPPING UP THE TANK RESOLVES THE ISSUE AGAIN TEMPORARILY UNTIL THE TANK IS SLIGHTLY LESS THAN HALF FULL. PROBLEM IS MOST PRONOUNCED WHEN TRAVELLING UPHILL OR LEANING THROUGH A TURN.

I WAS NOTIFIED BY THE DEALER THAT THEY SPOKE TO HARLEY-TECH SUPPORT AND THE DEALER WAS ADVISED TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP (REF#248840 REP:JOHN). AFTER REFUELING THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY, IT TOOK LESS THAN 2 GALLONS TO FILL UP EVEN THOUGH MY TANK IS 3.5 GALLONS. AT 120 MILES, I WAS GOING AROUND 30 MPH IN A RIGHT HAND CURVE AND THE BIKE STARTED TO STALL. AGAIN, THIS IS BEFORE A LOW-FUEL INDICATOR. I FILLED UP WITH EXACTLY 2 GALLONS, MEANING I HAD 1.5 GALLONS IN THE TANK. THIS KIND OF LAG/LEAP PROBLEM WILL GET SOMEONE KILLED AND MUST BE ADDRESSED....
WITH ROUGHLY .9 GALLONS OF FUEL IN TANK, WHEN LEAVING A FULL STOP, VEHICLE PAUSES HARD ON ACCELERATION. PROBABLE CAUSE IS FUEL STARVATION CAUSED BY FUEL FLOWING BACK IN THE TANK, AWAY FROM THE FRONT-LOCATED FUEL PUMP, STARVING EFI SYSTEM OF GASOLINE. AS FUEL MOVES FORWARD AFTER A BRIEF PAUSE IN FORWARD MOMENTUM, THE PUMP HAS ACCESS TO THE FUEL AND THE BIKE SUDDENLY LURCHES FORWARD. THIS HAPPENS MULTIPLE TIMES AS THE FUEL IN TANK TRAVELS FORWARD AND AFT. EXTREMELY UNSAFE CONDITION AT LOW SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY AT INTERSECTIONS WHEN THIS IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR. I HAVE TO BE EXCESSIVELY CAUTIOUS TO MAKE SURE THERE IS OVER A HALF A TANK OF GAS TO KEEP THIS FROM OCCURING. THE LAST TIME IT OCCURED, THE LOW-FUEL LIGHT HAD NOT EVEN COME ON YET, (LIGHT IS SAID TO COME ON AT .8 GALLON LEFT). THIS IS EXTREMLY UNSAFE.
IF THE VEHICLE'S FUEL TANK LEVEL IS APPROX. HALF OR LOWER, THE VEHICLE MAY ABRUPTLY STALL AND SURGE FORWARD. THE LOWER THE FUEL LEVEL IS, THE MORE OFTEN AND ABRUPTLY THE STALL AND SURGE IS, AND CAN HAPPEN DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, ESPECIALLY UP AN INCLINE. THIS HAPPENS BEFORE THE LOW FUEL INDICATOR ILLUMINATES. THIS BEHAVIOUR CAN EASILY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR FATALITY.
I EXPERIENCED A LAG AND LEAP ISSUE. I WAS RIDING MY BIKE WITH ABOUT 83 MILES ON THE TANK OF GAS AND OUT OF NOWHERE IT WOULD PRETEND TO STALL AND THEN TAKE OFF. THIS VEHICLE WILL HESITATE WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A FULL STOP AND THEN FEEL AS IF IT IS ABOUT TO STALL THEN SURGE. THE PATTERN MAY REPEAT SEVERAL TIMES OVER SEVERAL SECONDS BEFORE THERE IS CONSISTENT FULL POWER. IT HAPPENES WHEN THERE IS ABOUT 85-90 MILES DRIVEN ON A FULL TANK. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE LESS THAN A WEEK AGO, IT ALSO HAS LESS THAN 100 MILES. THE VEHICLE RAN FINE WITH NO PROBLEMS UNTIL IT REACHED AROUND 75-80 MILES. AT THIS POINT THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE THEN DECELERATE AND STALL OUT AFTER STARTING FROM A COMPLETE STOP. THIS WOULD HAPPEN IN FORWARD MOTION AND ALSO ON TURNS. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED ABOUT 20(TWENTY) TIMES LEAVING ME (VEHICLE STALLED OUT) IN THE MIDDLE OF INTERSECTIONS AND ALSO IN CITY TRAFFIC. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED IN 1ST, 2ND, AND 3RD GEAR. THE VEHICLE LUNGES FORWARD THEN BOGS DOWN THEN LUNGES FORWARD AGAIN, MOST OF THE TIME STALLING OUT. WHEN ACCELERATING AWAY FROM A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE BIKE HESITATED, THEN DUMPED ALL ITS POWER INTO THE ACTION, RESULTING IN A "LAG-LEAP" EFFECT. IT'S DONE IT 2-3 TIMES SINCE THE INITIAL INSTANCE.
WHEN THE FULL TANK GETS LOW WHERE THE FUEL LIGHT COMES ON. (NORMAL FOR A MOTORCYCLE). YOU STOP AND WHEN YOU GO TO START, THE ENGINE SURGES AND STALLS VIOLENTLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY. THIS COULD CAUSE A CRASH. IT SEEMS THE MOTOR STARVES FOR FUEL AND STALLS AND WHEN IT STALLS THE FUEL THEN FEEDS PROPERLY AND CAUSES A FIERCE ACCELERATION, AGAIN, UNEXPECTEDLY. THERE ARE REPORTS ALL OVER THE INTERNET OF THIS WITH THIS NEW MODEL AND THE MANUFACTURER HAS FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE SAFETY CONCERN AND RECALL IT.
WHILE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT MY BIKE STALLED AND SUDDENLY SURGED FORWARD,I LOST MY BALANCE AND DROPPED IT IN THE LOT. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE AS FOUND IN INVESTIGATION PE15015. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EXPERIENCED ENGINE STUMBLE (STALL), COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS LAG AND LEAP. THIS OCCURRED WHEN I HAD A LOW FUEL LEVEL IN MY TANK, (TANK WAS FILLED 10 MILES LATER WITH 3.1 GALLONS INTO A 3.5 GALLON TANK). WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP INTO A RIGHT HAND TURN I EXPERIENCED A NEAR-STALLING OF MY ENGINE. WHEN COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AND THEN ACCELERATING MOTORCYCLE ACTS AS IF IT IS LOW ON FUEL AND DOES A VERY VIOLENT JUDDER/ JOLT FORWARDS. AS THIS IS SEEN AS AN ENTRY LEVEL BIKE SOMEONE WITH LESS RIDING TIME WILL DEFINITELY RUN INTO SOME SERIOUS ISSUES. IF HARLEY DOESN'T ACT ON THIS THERE WILL DEFINITELY HAVE SOME LAW SUITS TO DEAL WITH IN NEAR FUTURE. THIS ISSUE HAS MADE ME THINK TWICE ABOUT RIDING AT SPEEDS OVER 35MPH WITH THIS PARTICULAR MOTORCYCLE....
FROM 0MPH, UNDER MODERATE ACCELERATION BIKE LOST ALL POWER FOR A MOMENT THEN QUICKLY ACCELERATED, HAPPENED OVER THE COURSE OF ABOUT A SECOND. VERY DANGEROUS, LESS EXPERIENCED RIDERS COULD BECOME INJURED OR COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT ON PUBLIC ROADS WITH MODERATE TRAFFIC. *TR
AT THE DEALER, I TEST TRIED THE X500. AT THE FIRST STOP SIGN, I ACCELERATED AND THE MOTORCYCLE STALLED. WHEN I DECELERATED, THE GAS IN THE GAS TANK MOVED AND THE BIKE RAN AGAIN. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM, EXPLAINING WHAT HAD JUST HAPPENED. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN THE GOVERNOR. I ASKED FOR THE X750, EVERYTHING WENT PERFECT AND I BOUGHT IT. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. I ACCELERATED AND THE BIKE STALLED. ONCE I DECELERATED AND GAS IN THE TANK MOVED AGAIN. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO GAS STATION AND FILLED THE GAS TANK WITH 2.134 GALLONS AT ONLY 99 MILES. THE SECOND 2ND INCIDENT, SAME ACCELERATE IN A LIGHT TURNING RIGHT CARS BEHIND ME, STALLS AND GET GAS WHEN I SHIFT TO SECOND, SAME IMMEDIATELY GAS STATION, THIS TIME FILL THE GAS TANK WITH 2.469 GALLONS...
WHEN FUEL IS LOW (USUALLY BELOW 1 GALLON), THE MOTORCYCLE BEHAVES DANGEROUSLY WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. VEHICLE WILL BEGIN TO MOVE FORWARD, SUDDENLY LOSE POWER CAUSING IT TO SLOW DOWN, AND SUDDENLY REGAIN POWER CAUSING IT TO ACCELERATE UNEXPECTEDLY. MOST LIKELY CAUSE IS FUEL PUMP STARVATION. FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED AT FRONT OF THE TANK, AS VEHICLE MOVES FORWARD THE REMAINING GAS IS PUSHED TO THE REAR OF THE TANK, PUMP CAN'T MAINTAIN FUELING TO FUEL INJECTORS, CAUSING THE BIKE TO LOSE POWER AND SLOW. THE GAS THEN MOVES FORWARD, PUMP ACCESSES THE FUEL AND FEEDS THE SYSTEM CAUSING A SUDDEN AND UNEXPECTED RETURN OF POWER AND ACCELERATION. AT STOPLIGHTS AND STOP SIGNS THIS COULD EASILY RESULT IN THE MOTORCYCLE BEING REAR-ENDED, AND IN CORNERS COULD EASILY CAUSE THE REAR WHEEL TO LOSE TRACTION RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT. *TR
