DT: DODGE 2.7L ENGINE FAILED. ABOUT TWO WEEKS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED FROM A PRIVATE OWNER THE RODS IN THE ENGINE BEGAN KNOCKING. THE VEHICLE IS A 2000 DOD INTREPID. *AK *TT *NM
DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 DODGE INTREPID. AFTER RUNNING THE CAR FOR JUST UNDER 5 YEARS WITH LESS THAN 78,000 MILES THE ENGINE BROKE DOWN WITHOUT WARNING. AFTER TAKING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN INDICATED THE ENGINE WAS FILLED WITH SLUDGE, AND REPAIRS WOULD COST $7000. THE CAR WAS ADEQUATELY MAINTAINED ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS. CHRYSLER REFUSED TO HELP WITH THE COST OF THE ENGINE. INDIVIDUALS SPOKEN WITH AT NATIONAL CENTER, AND DEALERSHIP WAS SURPRISED THAT THE CHRYSLER MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT COVER COST OF ENGINE.*AK
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN, ALL OF A SUDDEN, I HEARD A NOISE, MY ENGINE AND OIL LIGHTS CAME ON, AND MY CAR QUIT RUNNING. FORTUNATELY, I HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM GOING TO PULL OFF ON THE SIDE OF THE BUSY HIGHWAY.
DT: CONTACT STATED THERE WAS A SMALL AMOUNT OF SLUDGE IN THE OIL SYSTEM, CAUSING THE TIMING CHAIN TO BREAK, CAUSING THE VALVES TO COLLAPSE. *AK
DT: WHILE DRIVING IN A SNOW STORM THE ENGINE FAILED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. ONE MONTH PRIOR TO THIS ENGINE FAILED WHILE GETTING AN OIL CHANGE. THE MECHINCE NOTICED THAT THERE WAS SLUDGE IN OIL. HAD IT TOWED HOME, AND CONSUMER WAS TOLD THE ENGINE WAS TOO SMALL FOR THIS CAR. *AK
KNOCKING SOUND IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT AT 65000 MILES. TOLD BY LOCAL DODGE DEALER THAT I HAD A CASE OF CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE - PRICE FOR NEW ENGINE & LABOR $6500. HAD A LOCAL MECHANIC REPLACE ROD BEARINGS AND SO FAR, IT IS HOLDING TOGETHER, BUT I AM CONCERNED WITH THE NUMBER OF ENGINE FAILURES I HAVE SEEN. CHECK OUT "DONTBUYONE.COM"
WHILE DRIVING HOME APRIL 20, 2005 MY CAR BEGAN SPUTTERING AND STALLED OUT. I GOT IT HOME AND CALLED MY MECHANIC TO COME OVER AND CHECK IT OUT. HE IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME THAT I HAD A ROD KNOCK, AND THAT I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE CAM SENSOR. ON APRIL 22, 2005 I HAD THE SENSOR INSTALLED, $37.00 FOR PART. THE CAR WAS THEN DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES AND THE KNOCKING IN THE ENGINE GOT INCREASINGLY WORSE UNTIL IT WENT BANG AND WOULD NO LONGER RUN. THE ENGINE HAD THROWN A ROD. NOW WE ARE LOOKING AT A REPLACEMENT ENGINE, AT AN APPROXIMATE COST OF $3,500.00 TO $5,000.00. THIS FOR A VEHICLE WITH ONLY 44,000 MILES. IT SHOULD BE JUST BREAKING IN AT THIS POINT, NOT BREAKING DOWN, ESPECIALLY FROM A BLOWN ENGINE. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED, HAVING HAD THE OIL CHANGED REGULARLY AT 2,500-3,000 MILES. TOOK TO A CHRYSLER DEALER, AND THEY SAID THERE WAS SLUDGE AND THEY DON'T COVER THAT. TOOK TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND THEY REPLACED THE ENGINE FOR $6000.00.*AK *TT *NM
DT: WHILE DRIVING THE CONSUMER HEARD A CLATTERING NOISE THEN THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AMERICAN ENGINE OF BATON ROUGE. SLUDGE BUILD UP CAUSED THE OIL SCREEN TO BECOME CLOGGED AN RESULTED IN A BLOWN ENGINE. SERVICE MECHANIC STATED OIL SCREEN WAS DEFECTED. *NM WHEN THE ENGINE FAILED, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP ALONG WITH THE BRAKES. THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECT IN THE OIL PAN. ON DEC.26 2004, AS WE WERE LEAVING OUR HOUSE THE CAR STARTING MAKING A TICKING SOUND, WE PULLED BACK INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND CHECKED THE OIL, TRANSMISSION FLUID AND HOSES. NO LIGHTS WERE ON TO INDICATE A PROMBLEM BUT WE PARKED THE CAR SINCE IT WAS A NOISE WE HAD NEVER HEARD.THE NEXT MORNING, MONDAY, WE CALLED OUR MECHANICS AND HAD THE CAR TOWED IN, THE MECHANIC ASKED ABOUT THE OIL CHANGES AND I TOLD HIM TO CHECK THE DATE ON THE WINDOW I KNEW IT WAS RECENT. HE STATED HE WAS SHOCKED DUE TO THE SLUDGE BUILD UP IN THE ENGINE. I INFROMED HIM I HAVE REGULAR OIL CHANGES AND HAVE THE RECEIPTS. HE SUGGESTED TO CLEAN ADN REPLACE THE OIL PAN AND FILTER TOTALING $800.00, HE DID THE WORK. THURSDAY DEC 30 I GOT THE CAR BACK BUT DID NOT DRIVE IT DUE TO THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. MONDAY...
WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, WITHOUT WARNING, THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SEIZE. OWNER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT GARAGE. PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *JB
2000 DODGE INTREPID WITH APPROX 46,000 MILES ON IT. PRIOR TO FAILURE EVERYTHING SEEMS NORMAL. DRIVING 35 MPH ENGINE BEGINS TO TICK VERY LOUDLY. AM ABLE TO STOP AT MY DESTINATION AND RETURN HOME. ONCE HOME AND INSPECTING THE NOISE HAVE TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP FOLLOWING DAY. THE ENGINE HAS FAILED DUE TO SLUDGE AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE AS OF YET AS THEY WANT $7200.00 TO REPLACE THE FAULTY 2.7 LITER ENGINE. I STILL OWE ON THE CAR AND IT IS DEAD @ A MERE 46,000 MILES. *JB

AFTER TOWING THE VEHICLE HOME, MADE CONTACT WITH THE TOW DRIVER, AND WAS TOLD THAT ENGINE BLEW OUT. *AK HAVE NOT HAD CAR REPAIRED DUE TO COST ON A NEW MOTOR AND LABOR. 2000 DODGE INTREPID, OIL SLUDGE BUILD UP CAUSED ENGINE TO BLOW. *BF THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE OIL SLUDGE PROBLEM WAS BECAUSE THE TUBE GOING OUT OF THE OIL PUMP TWIST AND TURNS UP AND DOWN SP THAT THE OIL DOESN'T PUMP THROUGH AS WELL AS IT SHOULD. *JB
2000 DODGE INTREPID WITH 2.6L ENGINE, 51,500 MILES. DRIVING VERY SLOWLY IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD CAR SHUT DOWN AND ROLLED TO A STOP. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. ATEMPTED RESTART, ENGINE TURNED OVER MAKING A METALLIC CLICKING SOUND. HAD CAR TOWED TO SHOP AND TOLD THAT ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. AT LEAST ONE VALVE IS BENT AND DAMAGED AND LARGE METAL FRAGMENTS ARE IN INTAKE MANIFOLD. OIL HAS BEEN CHANGED REGULARLY BETWEEN 3,OOO AND 4,000 MILES. REPAIR ESTIMATE IS 4-5K. ENGINES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BLOW AT 51,000 MILES, THIS IS A FLAWED DESIGN.*AK

ORIGINAL ENGINE WAS A 2.7 LITER. HOWEVER, CONSUMER HAD THIS ENGINE REPLACED WITH ANOTHER 2.7 LITER ENGINE. *AK

CHECKED WITH DODGE DEALER REPAIR SHOP, WHO EXPLAINED IT AS NEEDING PREMIUM GAS AND THAT IT WAS COMMON TO HEAR THIS NOISE.*AK 2) FEB 1, 2005: WIFE WAS DRIVING CAR HOME FROM WORK WHEN ENGINE BEGAN TO HAVE A METALLIC LOUD NOISE LIKE A NOISY VALVE LIFTER. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IMMEDIATELY TO DEALERSHIP FOR EVALUATION. MILEAGE WAS 56002. 3) DEALERSHIP EVALUATED FAILURE AS SPUN #1 ROD BEARING. ADDITIONAL DAMAGE TO TIMING CHAIN GUIDES WITH TENSIONER AT MAXIMUM TRAVEL. METALLIC PARTICULATE PRESENT IN UPPER OIL PASSAGES OF ENGINE. INSPECTION OF OIL PAN REVEALED NO INDICATION OF SLUDGE PRESENT IN OIL AS NOTED IN TYPICAL FAILURES OF THIS TYPE FOR THIS ENGINE. CAR HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT PRESENT DUE TO SIGNIFICANT COST REQUIRED TO FIX, WHICH WAS QUOTED AT...

I HAD IT TOWED TO A REPAIRMAN WHO TOLD ME THE ENGINE WAS GONE AND I NEEDED A NEW ONE. HE, ALSO, TOLD ME OF ALL THE OTHER 2.7 ENGINES HE HAS BEEN REPLACING IN THE LAST FEW YEARS. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER/DAIMLER TO GET HELP FROM THEM. THEY SAID THANKS FOR THE INPUT BUT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I WILL NEVER BUY DODGE AGAIN...NEITHER WILL ANYONE IN MY FAMILY. WE HAD OUR OIL CHANGED EVERY 3-5,000 MILES AND KEPT UP THE CAR. IT NEVER SHOULD HAVE SEIZED LIKE THAT. *JB

WHILE DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY, MY ENGINE QUIT WHILE I WAS IN THE FAR LEFT LANE AT ABOUT 65 MPH. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE EXIT AND ROLL TO THE SHOULDER. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME HE THOUGHT THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE AND THAT IF IT DID IT MAY HAVE DAMAGED SOME OF THE VALVES AND IF THAT WERE THE CASE IT MIGHT COST A COUPLE THOUSAND DOLLARS TO REPAIR. I TOLD HIM TO LOOK INTO IT. FIVE MINUTES LATER HE CALLED BACK AND SAID AFTER SPEAKING TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND HIS SUPERVISOR, THAT THE ENGINE IS NO GOOD, BECAUSE OF THEIR EXPERIENCE WITH "THESE INTREPIDS". AFTER SPEAKING TO THE SUPERVISOR, I ASKED HIM TO GO INTO DETAIL AND EXPLAIN HOW HE WOULD KNOW THIS WITHOUT TAKING THE ENGINE APART. HE EXPLAINED THAT THEY HAVE HAD A LOT...
STOPPED AT INTERSECTION ENGINE DIED. TOWED HOME. MY HUSBAND WHO IS A MASTER TECH. SAYS THE ENGINE HAS 1&2 RODS BURNED TO THE CRANK. CAR HAS 78,000 MILES. MY HUSBAND SAID WE CHANGED TO SYN.OIL AT 40,000 TO GET RID OF THE SLUDGE, IT DID NOT WORK. SO I AM 63 AND MY CAR IS RUINED WE CAN NOT AFFORD ANOTHER. THANKS CHRYSLER YOU HAVE MADE MY LIFE. *JB

TOOK TO MECHANIC AND HAD TO HAVE ALL ROCKER ARMS REPLACED AND A TIMING CHAIN HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE. I WAS TOLD SLUDGE WAS THE PROBLEM AND I WAS TOLD NOT TO USE ANY OIL WITH PARAFFIN WAX IN IT WHICH IS MOST OF YOUR OIL CHANGE PLACES. I ALSO HEAR A CLUNK IN THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE AREA HOPE IT IS JUST A STRUT AND NOT MY RACK AND PINION SYSTEM. *JB

THE CONSUMER PULLED OVER ADD 3 QUARTS OF OIL AND PROCEEDING ON. SUDDENLY THE TRANSMISSION MADE A CLUNG NOISE ,FLOWED BY THE ENGINE STALLING. THE VEHICLE COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE MECHANIC FOUND METAL FILING IN THE OIL. *NM

WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE DRIVER TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO DO SO. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED HOME. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THE THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *JB

CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE BEFORE IT EVENTUALLY STALLED. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR CHECK UP, AND RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. *AK....*AK
ENGINE WAS REPLACED BECAUSE OF A SLUDGE BUILD UP. VEHICLE WAS MAKING A NOISE. CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AND THE ENGINE HAD A SLUDGE BUILD UP.
WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER AND STEERING. NONE OF THE DASH LIGHT ILLUMINATED TO INDICATE A PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND IT WAS LATER DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE HAD BLOWN. *NM THE CONSUMER STATED THAT NO ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE ENGINE HAD 84000 MILES ON IT. *TC
WHILE DRIVING, THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE AND THEN VEHICLE BEGAN TO VIBRATE. THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING AND HAD TO BE TOWED. A REP. FROM THE DEALERSHIP CAME OUT TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND INDICATED THE ENGINE FAILURE WAS DUE TO OIL SLUDGE BUILD UP WHICH IS A COMMON FAILURE WITH THIS SIZE ENGINE. *JB
