IN JUNE OF 2004, MY 1998 DODGE INTREPID STALLED DURING NORMAL HIGHWAY DRIVING DURING MID AFTERNOON DRIVING. LUCKLY, WE WERE ABLE TO SAFELY STEER THE CAR ONTO A OFFRAMP. IF THIS HAPPENED DURING RUSH HOUR, THERE WAS A GOOD 99% CHANCE THAT MY CHILDREN WOULD HAVE LOST A PARENT THAT DAY! AFTER TOWING THE CAR INTO A REPAIR SHOP, WE LATER FOUND OUT THAT WE NEEDED A NEW ENGINE (OIL SLUDGE PROBLEM, $5000)! DURING RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND NHTSA, I FOUND OUT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH INTREPIDS. I HOPE SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE, DODGE WILL OWN UP TO THIS MISTAKE.*AK
ONE WEEK AFTER HAVING OIL CHANGED IN MY 98 DODGE INTREPID 2.7L,WHILE DRIVING, ENGINE REVVED REAL HIGH IN CRUISE CONTROL AND MADE A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE AND DIED BEFORE STOPPING. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. TOWED THE CAR TO DODGE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY TOLD ME THAT THE OIL WAS METALLIC AND THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CAR HAS ONLY 108,000 MILES ON IT. *JB
THE VALVES STARTED CLICKING. I CHECKED THE OIL, IT WAS NOT LOW. I CHANGED THE OIL. I SAW A CHRYSLER SILVER CERTIFIED MECHANIC. HE TOLD ME THAT THE MOTOR WAS FAILING, AND THE ONLY OPTION WAS TO REPLACE THE MOTOR. THE MOTOR FAILED ON JUNE 2, 2003. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED AND IT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. I DID NOT WANT ANOTHER 2.7 CHRYSLER MOTOR. *AK
WHILE DRIVING BACK FROM CONSUMER'S SON'S SCHOOL VEHICLE CUT OFF. VEHICLE DID THIS ABOUT 4 TIMES, AND THE LAST TIME THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC, WHO DETERMINED THAT THE MOTOR WAS SHOT/GONE. *AK
PURCHASED 1998 DODGE INTREPID 2.7 IN YEAR 2001 AND ENGINE SHUT DOWN IN SUMMER OF 2002. KEPT UP WITH OIL CHANGES AND HAD OIL IN IT WHEN IT SHUT DOWN. REPLACED ENGINE IN MAY 2002 FOR $4,100. THIS YEAR JUNE 2004 THE ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING REAL LOUD WITH NO WARNING IN THE MIDDLE OF 95 IN VIRGINIA AND SHUTDOWN. HAD TO HAVE THE CAR PUSHED OFF 95 AND HAD POLICE ASSISTANCE TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED ALL THE WAY BACK TO MARYLAND AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE FOR THE 2ND TIME.... ESTIMATED COST $6.300 PURCHASING ENGINE THROUGH JASPER WHO HAS STATED THE ENGINE HAS OIL LINE ISSUES AND WATER PUMP ISSUES. THEY HAVE REVAMPED AND REDESIGNED (SO THEY SAY TO MAKE IT A BETTER ENGINE) BUT THE COST TO HAVE A 2ND ENGINE IS JUST CRAZY AND I REFUSE TO FIX IT AGAIN.... SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE...
WHILE DRIVING SUDDENLY A PUFF OF SMOKE CAME FROM THE ENGINE. WHEN THIS OCCURRED CONSUMER PULLED OFF THE ROAD, TO LET THE ENGINE COOL DOWN. THEN , CONSUMER DROVE SLOWLY HOME. THE NEXT DAY VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND DEALERSHIP INDICATED THAT ENGINE BLEW OUT. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A STANDARD FAILURE WITH THESE VEHICLE'S ENGINES. THE ENGINE'S WERE REDESIGNED IN THE NEWER MODEL YEAR VEHICLES. *AK THE CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE FAULTY ENGINE. *NM
WHILE DRIVING MY 1998 DODGE INTREPID, I HEARD A NOISE A SAW A BLUE CLOUD OF SMOKE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND REALIZED THAT THE ENGINE WAS ABOUT TO FAIL. O INDICATOR OR WARNING LIGHT WAS ON. THE CAR HAD 50,000 MILES AND WAS MAINTAINED ON A REGULAR BASIS. IT WAS THEN TOWED TO A DODGE DEALER WHERE I WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE BLEW AND WOULD BE $6,000 TO BE REPLACED. I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE WAS NOW $100!!!*AK
MY CAR, AN INTREPID 1998 WITH AN ENGINE OF 2.7L, BROKE UP BECAUSE AN EXCESS OF GREASE ON THE ENGINE, I TRIED TO REPAIR IT BUT ALL THE PIECES ARE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE, BESIDES I READ ABOUT ARTICLES IN THE INTERNET OF A LOT OF CUSTOMERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ENGINE MADE A KNOCKING NOISE, AND SMOKED. TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE WAS DEFECTIVE. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE FOR SEVEN MONTHS. *AK
ENGINE STARTED HAVING A TICKING SOUND. TOOK VEHICLE INTO DEALER AND DEALER REPLACED THE RODS AND BEARINGS. THIS REPAIR LASTED ONE YEAR. NOW I NEED A NEW ENGINE. COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE AT 81,000 MILES. *AK
LTR FM TRAVIS PHILLIPS (KY) OWNER OF A 1998 DODGE CHRYSLER INTREPID REPORTING DEFECTIVE ENGINE, WINDOW OFF TRACK WRITER BELIEVES VEHICLE SHOULD BE RECALLED REPLY TO THE FORT WRIGHT, KY DISTRICT OFFICE. *PH THE VEHICLE ENGINE BLEW WHILE THE CONSUMER'S WIFE WAS DRIVING 65 MPH. THERE WAS NO WARNING PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. THE CONSUMER INDICATED THAT HE HAD THE OIL CHANGED EVERY 3000 MILES AND THAT THE OIL WAS JUST CHANGED PRIOR TO THE ENGINE FAILURE. THE VEHICLES LIGHTS FLICKERED, THE WINDOWS CAME OFF THE TRACK WHEN PUTTING THEM UP OR DOWN. THE SEALS AROUND THE DOORS FELL OFF. THE AIR/HEAT ONLY WORKED WHEN ON HIGH. THE STARTER FAILED. *NM
I HAVE A 1998 DODGE INTREPID 2.7 WITH 127,000 MILES AND THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE ENGINE IS BLEW UP.I ALWAYS HAD THE OIL CHANGED ON TIME. DETAILS-LOUD TICKING SOUND WITH OIL LIGHT COMING ON WHEN STOP AND SHUTTING OFF SOME TIMES. I HAVE TALK TO REPAIR SHOPS AND THEY SAID I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE ENGINE (COST$ 5800)BECAUSE THE 2.7 ENGINE IS JUNK!I TALK WITH A GUY FROM A REPAIR SHOP AND HE SAID THAT I WAS THE FIFTH PERSON TODAY TO CALL IN WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT( I CALLED IN AROUND 1P.M.). THIS IS SAD . JUST THINK AMERICAN MADE. NOW I SEE WHY NO ONE IS BUYING AMERICAN MADE CARS ANYMORE. AND THEY HAVE THE NERVE TO SAY IT WAS MY FAULT THE FIRST TIME THE ENGINE WIT OUT. WHILE DRIVING CONSUMER NOTICED THAT ENGINE WARNING LIGHT WAS FLASHING. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED TO RESET THE ENGINE LIGHT. CONSUMER NOTICED THE PROBLEM THREE MORE TIMES ALONG WITH THE ENGINE OIL LEAKING AND STALLING ERRATICALLY. DURING THE LAST REPAIR CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
I CURRENTLY OWN A 1998 CHRYLSER INTREPID WHICH HAS 110,000 MILES ON IT. IN THAT AMOUNT OF TIME I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE TWICE. THE FIRST TIME OCCURED ON 1/1/1999 WITH ONLY 12000 MILES ON IT. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THE MOTOR SEIZED UP DUE TO THICK OIL. THE OIL HAD LOTS OF METAL SHAVINGS FROM INSIDE THE ENGINE. THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE STAING DUE TO LACK OF MAINTAINENCE. AFTER THAT I FAITHFULLY MADE SURE I HAD RECEIPTS ON ALL ENGINE MAINTENENCE ITEMS. IN JULY OF 2003 THE ENGINE DID THE SAME THING AND ANOTHER REPLACEMENT WAS NEEDED. I WENT DIRECTLY TO A NON-DEALERSHIP LOCATION TO HAVE THE SECOND ENGINE PUT IN BECAUSE 1. THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT IS NOT THERE. AND 2. BECAUSE OF THE ATTITUDE AND PROBLEMS I HAD FIGHTING THE FIRST TIME WITH CHRYSLER. THIS COMPLAINT IS BEING FILED TO MAKE OTHERS...
CONSUMER STATED WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH AND WITHOUT ANY INDICATION VEHICLE LOST POWER. CONSUMER COASTED VEHICLE ONTO SIDE OF ROAD. TECHNICIAN SERVICED VEHICLE AND REPLACED ENGINE.*AK
I MADE A SHORT DRIVE HOME AT APPROX. 5:45 AM WHEN MY ENGINE OIL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOST OF POWER AND A HARD KNOCK SOUND. I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF TURNING INTO MY COMMUNITY AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. I RESTARTED THE CAR, IT REPEATEDLY KNOCKED LOUDLY THE NEXT 100 YARDS TO MY HOME. I THEN HAD IT TOWED AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE WAS TOTALED. THE WARNING LIGHT BEGAN TO COME ON THE PREVIOUS DAY WHEN THE CAR WAS IDLING, WITH PLENTY OF OIL IN THE ENGINE. SO I HAD ALREADY MADE AN APPOINTMENT WHEN THIS SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE CAME TO BE. THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF THIS PROBLEM UNTIL IT HAPPENED AND THE ONLY REPAIR NEEDED ON THE CAR WAS A MINOR OIL LEAK WHICH SHOULD NOT OF CAUSED SUCH A DRASTIC PROBLEM LIKE THIS. *JB

WE (HUSBAND AND I) OWN A 1998 DODGE INTREPID WITH A 2.7L ENGINE. WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE ENGINE LOCKED UP AND THE CAR DIED. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS, NO LIGHTS CAME ON, NO UNUSUAL SOUNDS. WE HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THIS CAR, WITH OIL CHANGE RECEIPTS AND ALL OF THAT GOOD STUFF. WE WERE DRIVING DOWN A MAIN ROAD IN THE TOWN WE LIVE IN WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND WERE GOING AROUND A CURVE. LUCKILY THE TWO CARS BESIDE US WERE PAYING ATTENTION, BECAUSE SINCE THE ENGINE LOCKED UP, THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT, AND I WASN'T STRONG ENOUGH TO STEER OUT OF THE WAY, THE OTHER TWO CARS DID MANAGE TO HONK THEIR HORNS AND SWERVE, NEARLY GOING OFF OF THE ROAD. (I HAVE READ AND BEEN TOLD BY TONS OF MECHANICS THE 2.7L ENGINES IN THESE CARS ARE HORRIBLE). *LA
MY 1998 DODGE INTREPID, 2.7 LITER ENGINE, WITH 53,000 MILES WAS MAKING A FUNNY ENGINE NOISE (NO PRIOR WARNING WHAT SO EVER). I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE BECAUSE OF "ENGINE SLUDGE." THE COST WAS $6,990.00 AND I STILL OWED OVER $4,000.00 ON THE VEHICLE!! UNLESS I COULD PROVE I GOT REGULAR OIL CHANGES, THERE WAS NO RECOURSE. AND THEN THEY TOLD ME BECAUSE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED (1 YEAR OLD) - EVEN THAT WAS POINTLESS, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO PROOF THE PREVIOUS OWNER GOT REGULAR OIL CHANGES!! THE MORE I SEARCH, THERE ARE SO MANY OTHERS OUT THERE WITH THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM. IT IS AN OUTRAGE THAT DODGE ISN'T ACKNOWLEDGING THIS. THERE AREN'T MANY FAMILIES THAT CAN TAKE A FINANCIAL HIT OF $7,000.00! *LA
REPAIRS WERE DONE TO THE ENGINE ON 3 OCCASIONS, ROTORS 2 OCCASIONS, BRAKES 1 OCCASION, CONTROL ARMS (SUSPENSION) 1 OCCASION, STEERING 1 OCCASION, & ELECTRICAL. ALTHOUGH I ONLY HAVE 54,000 MILES ON MY CAR AND THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REPLACED, THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO FIX THE ONGOING ENGINE PROBLEMS. THE DEALERSHIP MANAGER, ROD HARRIS, ADMITS IT A LIFTER TICKING BUT INSISTS THAT IT IS NORMAL. CHRYSLER GAVE ME AN "ADDED CARE SERVICE CONTRACT" THAT IS GOOD THROUGH 6/26/04 AND TO 75,000 MILES. PLAN CODE IS AD675H. THEY REFUSE TO FIX MY CAR. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME, AFTER THE FIRST THREE ATTEMPTS TO FIX IT, I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH CHRYSLER ON 1/12/04. ALSO NOTE THEY STILL HAVE MY VEHICLE TODAY 1/12/04 BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. IT'S BEEN IN SERVICE FOR 5 DAYS. TRANSMISSION FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON 1/7/04. I AM CONCERNED...

CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT ENGINE PROBLEMS. THIS WAS THE SECOND ENGINE INSTALLED. HOWEVER, THE RESULT WAS THE SAME. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH ENGINE LOCKED UP AND QUIT OPERATING. *AK

WHILE DRIVING MY 1998 DODGE INTREPID, MY OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND APPROX. FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER MY CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD DURING RUSH HOUR. BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD NOT START, I CALLED THE POLICE TO HAVE THEM STOP TRAFFIC SO I COULD CRUISE MY CAR BACKWARDS INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A MECHANIC TO FIX WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A BAD STARTER OR ALTERNATOR. THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE HAD SEIZED UP AND THAT I HAD PLENTLY OF OIL AND ANTIFREEZE. HE SAID THAT THE OIL PUMP LOCATED INSIDE THE ENGINE MAY HAVE STOPPED WORKING AND THEREFORE CAUSED MY ENGINE TO LOCK UP. *AK

DODGE INTREPID 2.7L-V6 ENGINE FAILED WHILE DRIVING. HE CAR WAS DRIVEN BY OUR 18 YEAR OLD SON ACCOMPANIED BY 2 OF HIS FRIENDS. HE LOST POWER STEERING AND BRAKES DUE TO FAILURE OF ENGINE. FORTUNATELY HE COULD BRING THE CAR TO A SAVE STOP WITHOUT INJURING ANYBODY. REASON ACCORDING TO DODGE DEALERSHIP: OIL SLUDGE DUE TO WHAT SEVERAL ENGINE EXPERTS HAVE STATED IS DUE TO INTERNAL OIL PASSAGES THAT ARE TOO NARROW FOR ENGINE OIL TO PROPERLY CIRCULATE.*AK

I BOUGHT A USED '98 INTREPID IN JAN. 2002. ENGINE SPUN A BEARING AT 58K MILES IN AUG. 2002. LOCAL MECHANIC REPLACED ENGINE WITH NEW ONE FROM CHRYSLER FACTORY A COST OF $3700 (DEALERSHIP WANTED OVER $5K). THE DEALERSHIP AND CHRYSLER BOTH TURNED THEIR BACKS AFTER MANY PHONE CALLS. THE OTHER NIGHT, AT 85K MILES, THE ENGINE BLEW AGAIN. OF COURSE, THIS IS BEYOND THE WARRANTY. *LA
I HAVE A 1998 DODGE INTREPID WITH A BLOWN ENGINE DUE TO BUILDUP OF SLUDGE. EVEN AFTER PROVIDING MAINTENANCE RECORDS OF OIL CHANGES EVERY 3000 MILES, CONSUMER CAR CARE, FROM WHOM I PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, REFUSED MY CLAIM. THE ENGINE IN THESE CARS ARE KNOWN TO BE DEFECTIVE, YET ALL CASES OF SLUDGE ARE BLAMED ON THE CONSUMER. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT ALL OWNERS OF 1998 THROUGH 2000 MODEL YEAR INTREPIDS AN CONCORDE DID NOT CHANGE THEIR OIL, BUT THAT IS WHAT WE ARE BEING TOLD BY CHRYSLER CORP. ANY GOOD MECHANIC WILL CONFIRM THE PROBLEMS IN THESE CARS AND MANY SERVICE STATIONS WILL NOT WORK ON THEM BECAUSE OF THESE PROBLEMS. IT IS TIME TO MAKE CHRYSLER TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THESE DEFECTIVE VEHICLES. *JB

WE HAD 73,000 MILES ON IT WHEN IT SUDDENLY FAILED ON US. MY WIFE WAS ON THE FREEWAY HEADING TO WORK. THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND SHE PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY. WELL, THE ENGINE STOPPED BEFORE SHE COULD EVEN COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. WE HAD IT TOWED TO A CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD US THE ENGINE HAD NO OIL AND IT SEIZED UP. WELL, I KNOW THE ENGINE HAD OIL. WE JUST HAD IT CHANGED 2 WEEKS PRIOR. THE CAR NEVER BURNED OIL. NOR WAS THERE EVER ANY LEAKING EVIDENT UNDERNEATH IT. I HAVE RECEIPTS TO PROVE MANY OF THE OIL CHANGES. WE HAD THEM DONE EVERY 3 THOUSAND MILES. SO I CALLED THE CORPORATION. I WAS TREATED VERY RUDELY. THE ONLY...
WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE CONSUMER HEARS A KNOCKING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE. THE CONSUMER HAS MADE CONTACT WITH THE DEALERSHIP. PLEASE PROVIDE DETAILS.
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY STALLS. AFTER SITTING FOR A FEW MINUTES VEHICLE WILL START AS IF NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. *AK AS OF OCTOBER 2003, THE CONSUMER HAD TO SIT 25 MINUTES IN A PARKING LOT WAITING FOR THE VEHICLE TO START. IT CONTINUED TO STALL ON HER DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD TWICE. CONSUMER QUESTIONED WHY NO ONE COULD GIVE HER AN ANSWER AS TO WHY THIS KEEPS HAPPENING AND WHY THERE'S NOT A RECALL. IN ADDITION, CONSUMER DECIDED TO WRITE EVERY TIME SHE HAS A PROBLEM WITH HER VEHICLE BECAUSE SHE NOTICED IT WASN'T JUST HER VEHICLE HAVING PROBLEMS. *PH
WHILE DRIVING, THE ENGINE FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. *AK *SCC *JB
WHILE COMING TO A STOP AT A STOPLIGHT, MY CAR ENGINE SUDDENLY SHUT OFF. I WAS UNABLE TO GET THE CAR STARTED. THE BATTERY HAD TO BE JUMPED AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE APPROXIMATELY 1/4 OF A MILE WHEN THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AGAIN AND THIS TIME THE POWER STEERING WENT AS WELL. DURING THIS SHORT DISTANCE, THE CAR WAS MAKING A HORRIBLE CLANKING SOUND. WHEN CHECKED OUT, IT WAS FOUND THAT 5 OF THE 6 SETS OF ROD BEARINGS WERE SPUN AND ONE BEARING HAD BROKEN INTO PIECES AND HAD FALLEN INTO THE OIL PAN. MY 1998 INTREPID HAS 81,000 MILES AND I HAD NO WARNING THAT THIS TYPE OF DAMAGE WAS OCCURRING.
DUE TO SLUDGE BUILD UP IN THE ENGINE, OIL EVAPORATED, WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO BLOW. *AK
ENGINE FAILED WHILE DRIVING, LOST ALL POWER STEERING. ENGINE BLOWN DUE TO SLUDGE IN ENGINE BECAUSE OF A FAULTY DESIGN, NO WARNING SIGNS. JUST HAD OIL CHANGED TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO INCEDENT.*AK
ME CAR WAS PURCHASED USED 1/16/03, SINCE PURCHASE, HAVE HAD SEVERAL SERIOUS PROBLEMS; IDLER PULLEY WARPED, BROKE POWER STEERING BELT WHILE ON ROAD COOLING FAN MOTOR WENT OUT ON PASSENGER SIDE OF CAR -THE ENGINE IN MY 1998 DODGE INTREPID BLEW -UP WHEN I WAS ON THE EXPRESSWAY IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE (ONE LANE OF TRAFFIC). I WAS TOLD BY SEVERAL LOCAL AUTO MECHANICS AND DODGE DEALERSHIPS THAT THESE ENGINES ARE NOTORIOUS FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKING QUIT WHEN ENGINE QUIT. CAR DIAGNOSED BY LOCAL MECHANIC " NEEDS ENGINE REPLACED".*AK
THERE WAS A KNOCKING NOISE IN THE 2.7 LITER ENGINE THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ENGINE FAILURE. OIL COMPARTMENT WAS FULL WHEN THE NOISE OCCURRED. THE CAUSE OF ENGINE FAILURE WAS UNDETERMINED. *AK
I HAVE A 1998 DODGE INTREPID AND THE ENGINE IS JUST ABOUT TO GO. I HAVEN'T DRIVEN IT IN 3 MONTHS TO PREVENT COMPLETE FAILURE. THE CAR HAS ONLY 68,000 MILES ON IT AND IT SOUNDS HORRIBLE! I HAD IT LOOKED AT AND THE MECHANIC TOLD ME IT WAS READY TO BLOW ANYTIME. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR A CAR WITH THIS LOW MILEAGE TO COMPLETELY FAIL. *AK
I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME SERIOUS PROBLEM AS MANY OTHERS AND CAN'T AFFORD TO COVER THE COST OF REPAIRS NOR MAKE PAYMENTS FOR SOMETHING I CAN'T DRIVE. THE ENGINE IN MY 1998 DODGE INTREPID STARTED MAKING WEIRD TICKING NOISES ALL OF A SUDDEN. THE OIL LIGHT WAS FLASHING ON AND OFF FROM TIME TO TIME AND THE OIL LEVEL WAS FINE. THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN WHILE COMING TO A STOP AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. PAYING FOR ANOTHER ENGINE IS IMPOSSIBLE. THESE ENGINES ALREADY HAD SOON TO GIVE OUT WRITTEN ON THEM BEFORE THEY LEFT THE ASSEMBLY PLANT. THE COST TO REPLACE THE ENGINE SHOULD NOT BE LEFT UP TO THE OWNER. TOTALLY UNFAIR!!!!!*AK
CAR STALLS AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHES ABOUT 5 TIMES AND VEHICLE EXPERIENCES AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF ACCELERATION ABILITY. CAR COASTS TO A NEAR STOP AND STALLS COMPLETELY LOCKING THE STEERING WHEEL. WHILE ENGINE IS HOT VEHICLE WILL NOT START. CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT AND OIL LIGHT REMAIN ON LONGER THAN ANY OTHER DASHBOARD LIGHTS. VEHICLE STARTS AGAIN ONLY AFTER SITTING FOR HOURS. VEHICLE WILL ONLY START WHEN IT IS COLD. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS. VEHICLE STORES NO CODES FOR MECHANIC TO DIAGNOSE PROBLEM.*AK
ENGINE IS BLOWN AND ONLY HAS 62,000 MILES. OIL CHANGES WERE KEPT UP AND OIL LEVELS WERE NORMAL. ENGINE JUST WENT WITH NO WARNING. AFTER TALKING TO MANY MACHANINCS THIS SEEM TO BE PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. EXCEPT THE DEALER FORGOT TO TELL US OF THE HISTORY THIS ENGINE HAS. THE REMANUFACTURED ENGINE ARE REDONE WITH PROPER OIL PUMP,BEARINGS AND CHAIN TENSIONERS, THIS IS A MANUFACTURES REBUILT ENGINE. HOWEVER THEY WILL NOT HELP US. WE ARE PAYING FOR A CAR THAT WE CAN NOT DRIVE. PLEASE HELP. D.P. *AK

ENGINE ON A 1998 DODGE INTREPID WITH ONLY 64,000 MILES ON IT REQUIRES A NEW ONE. THE PISTON AND VALVES ARE SHOT. THE REQUIRED OIL AND FILTER CHANGES WERE PERFORMED TIMELY. I CANNOT FIX THIS BY MYSELF. THE COST IS 7,000.00. I HAVE TO DRIVE IT LIKE IT IS AND THIS IS A POTENTIAL DANGER BECAUSE IF THE OIL ISN'T KEPT AT PROPER LEVELS IT COULD FREEZE AND STALL WHILE DRIVING. THERE IS NO INCIDENT YET BUT CAN BE IF LET THE WAY IT IS. I HAVE NO OTHER MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION AND CAN'T AFFORD TO REPAIR THE WHOLE BILL. CHRYSLER IS NOT HELPING OR SHOWING ANY RESPONSIBILITY. 1998 DODGE INTREPID ENGINE BLEW UP UNEXPECTEDLY, STRANDING MY ENTIRE FAMILY 2 HOURS FROM HOME. IT'S STILL IN THE SHOP AND CANNOT MAKE THE REPAIRS AND I STILL OWE $9600 ON IT.
