The contact owned a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel became stiff and then loosened. The steering started turning independently and was uncontrollable. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. The power steering warning light and several other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic, who declined to repair it due to the vehicle having an active recall. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer who also declined to perform the recall repair because the vehicle had a salvage title. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.

Wheel will lock up randomly on slow turns like an intersection, parking lot or anything. It’s very random and there’s no reason why it does it. The truck drives fine most of the time. It will say stabitrack service on my dash then it will go away my wheel locks up so I can’t turn it anymore then it will release like 10 seconds after. I nearly been in two accidents from this. The dealership can’t find out what’s wrong with the truck and I don’t feel comfortable knowing it’s not fix.

Vehicle will cut off as if an electrical short and the Service Stabilitrak indicator will flash on the dashboard along with warning chimes. This has happened several times at low speed (1st gear) especially while turning. The steering wheel locks and can not be turned. I've almost been involved in an accident this week because the truck turns off while making a turn. I was at a stop sign waiting to turn left having to cross 2 lanes of on coming traffic and when I accelerated the trucks electrical cut out and forced the steering wheel to go straight I gave it more gas and the truck turned back on. On another day I pulled up and put it in reverse turned right and the truck shut off I had to put it in park and restarted it to back in my driveway. GM need to fix this.

I own a 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 with around 61,000 miles on it. I work from home at the moment so I do not put a lot of miles on the vehicle. I drove the vehicle last on July 5 2025 and it sat in our driveway until July 10 2025. I got into the truck and the dash read “service power steering drive with care” and the power steering would not work and it was very difficult to turn the wheel. I tried starting the truck again and the message still displayed and the loss of power steering became intermittent. Power steering suddenly quit at highway speed. Found a loose negative battery Pole. Tighten it. Then two weeks later it did the same thing at highway speed. No steering at all. Very dangerous at 70 mph on curved roads. Took it to chev dealer truck repair shop. Said the negative cable was bad and an electric motor in the steering housing had an electric short. I have a 2016 Silverado 1500 I bought new. It only has 33000 miles on it. Last week I was backing my boat into the shop and the steering wheel jerked back and forth on its own pretty violently and a stabilitrac warning popped up and the radio screen kinda went dead for a second. Then last night I was pulling in a parking space at a restaurant and it did it again. This time it jerked and went dead enough to cut the truck completely off. I had to put it in park and crank the truck again. It actually reset the radios time and date.

Truck lost power and died while making a low speed right turn. Attempted to start vehicle but was unable to immediately after losing power, after trying again for about 30 seconds I was able to get it to start and pull it off the road. I lost control of the steering as the steering wheel locked up. When I turned it back on the truck required me to roll the driver window down and back up and radio stations went back to the default station, letting me know that the truck lost power. This typically happens at low speed, but I have had it lose power while driving on the highway at night and my headlights shut off, luckily it immediately came back on.

This has happened multiple times, most of the time going at a low mph while turning (I.e into a driveway). However, it has happened driving through a residential neighborhood as I’m going straight or turning. My truck will completely power off and I will lose access to the steering. The steering wheel will lock up, any systems (radio, A/C, etc. that were on will go off). Multiple time I have had my battery/alternator checked after these instances and my battery/alternator passes with flying colors. Luckily each time it has happened I haven’t been in traffic, but if another car was around or expecting me to make a full turn, it could have run into me while my truck just shut down in the middle of the turn. Dash board instrument panel and radio loses all power, May even cause vehicle to shut off not able to steer, If the cruise control is set it shuts it off. It mostly happens when you apply the brake or if I operate my passenger window from driver door controls. The problem has not been confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. I was traveling 30 to 35 miles a hour down about a 4 degree incline with a slight corner at the bottom when my power steering quit on me,no vehicles were coming my way, i stopped the truck and i was in the oncoming, i had to put alot of muscle just to get back in my lane, when i got the truck home i let it sit for a little while, got back in and it was working, i started to take it for a drive and the power steering quit,so i parked it and tried to drive it again and the same as before the power steering quit,so i cannot safely drive it now. Loss of power steering. For no reason and no pattern the power steering goes out. A warning message comes up in the driver info screen saying warning loss of power steering. When it happens it does not come back on until you shut the truck off, open and close the driver door to completely shut the truck off. It takes different lengths of time for it to begin working again. It goes away for a week to a couple of months. It happens under all driving conditions including highway, city, and country driving. Very dangerous because you can barely steer the vehicle. GM needs to stand up and take care of this problem. Others have reported this also.

AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY THE TRUCK SUDDENLY SHUT OFF AND THE STEERING WHEEL JERKED HARD OUT OF MY HAND. THE SCREENS ALL WENT BLANK.
