I HAVE 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA GLS WITH 1.8 L DOHC ENGINE. WHEN COLD STARTED, THE ENGINE PRODUCES TICKING/KNOCKING NOISE WHICH QUIETS DOWN AFTER RUNNING FOR 15 MINUTES. BUT, I OBSERVED THAT IT IS GETTING LOUDER AND LOUDER AND THE NOISE IS ALSO NOT GETTING REDUCED AS IT USED TO BE. I WENT TO NORTHTOWN HYUNDAI AND THEY FOUND METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL PAN. HYUNDAI REFUSED TO REPLACE THE ENGINE FOR FREE EVEN THOUGH THEY VERY WELL KNOW THAT IT IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT DUE TO BAD PISTON COATING. THE ENGINE POWER HAS HIGHLY REDUCED AND I AM AFRAID THAT IT MIGHT BLOW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE ATTACHED THE HYUNDAI CANADA BULLETIN WHERE THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THE MANUFACTURING PROBLEM. BUT, HYUNDAI USA IS NOT DOING ANYTHING WITH THIS PROBLEM.
AFTER 110,000 MILES, ENGINE STARTED HESITATING, NOT RUNNING SMOOTH, ANYMORE. BROUGHT TO VALLEY STREAM, NY DEALER ON 1/8 AND THEY CLAIMED NO TROUBLE FOUND, SENT ME AWAY AND 2 MOS. LATER, THE ENGINE DIED. THEY "CONFISCATED" MY VEHICLE FOR SAFETY CONCERNS, BUT NEVER SAID WHAT, SPECIFICALLY.
TICKING NOISE AT 78000 MILES.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. A FEW MINUTES AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY AFTER A TRIP, THE SOUND OF A HORN WAS HEARD FROM THE VEHICLE. SOMEONE LOOKED OUTSIDE AND SAW THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE ON FIRE. THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED BY A FAMILY MEMBER. THERE WAS NO WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. NEITHER A FIRE NOR A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND DECLARED TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE CONTACT SENT AN EMAIL TO VANDERGRIFF HYUNDAI (817-912-5122, LOCATED AT 1120 W INTERSTATE 20, ARLINGTON, TX 76017), BUT THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V310000 (STRUCTURE). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 88,000. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
AT 56,000 MILES OR THERE ABOUTS MY ENGINE STARTED TO TICK, HAS HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND OIL CHANGES SINCE PURCHASED AS A USED VEHICLE IN 2014 WITH 17,000 MILES. THE MECHANICS STATE THIS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE ELANTRA. I AM COVERED UNDER MY 100,000 MILE WARRANTY, YET HYUNDAI REFUSES TO FIX THE ENGINE BLAMING IT ON POOR MAINTENANCE. I BROUGHT THIS VEHICLE PUTTING MY TRUST IN THE COMPANY AND NOW MAY END UP PAYING FOR A CAR I CANNOT USE OR MAY KILL ME. SOMEONE NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING.
I PURCHASED THE CAR USED, WHEN IT HAD 35,000 MILES ON IT. AROUND 38,000 MILES, I STARTED TO EXPERIENCE AN ENGINE TICKING NOISE AND VIBRATION BEFORE COMING TO A STOP OR WHEN STARTING UP AFTER A STOP. IT FEELS LIKE THE CAR WILL STALL, BUT IT NEVER ACTUALLY STALLS. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO SEVERAL MECHANICS AND THE HEAD MECHANIC AT A HYUNDAI DEALER. THE HYUNDAI MECHANIC SAID THE ISSUE IS "COMMON" WITH HYUNDAI ELANTRAS. HE LISTED OFF VARIOUS FIXES HE HAS TRIED, BUT SAID HE CAN'T FIGURE OUT A COMMON CAUSE. WHEN I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE ONLINE, IT APPEARS THAT MANY OTHER HYUNDAI ELANTRA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM (E.G. CARCOMPLAINTS.COM). IT SEEMS THAT THERE ARE MANY HYUNDAI ELANTRA OWNERS WAITING ON ENGINE REPLACEMENTS, WITH HYUNDAI OFTEN NOT WANTING TO PAY FOR THE ENGINE. I WONDER IF A RECALL IS NEEDED.
I HAVE A 2012 ELANTRA, I AM 2ND OWNER OF THE CAR, IT JUST TURNED 67,000 MILES AND BEGAN MAKING A LOUD TICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE, I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC WHO DID AN OIL CHANGE AND DISCOVERED THAT THERE WERE PIECES OF METAL IN THE OIL PAN AND SUGGESTED I TAKE IT TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. UPON INSPECTION AT DEALERSHIP THEY STATED I NEED A NEW ENGINE. THE CAR IS NO LONGER IN WARRANTY SO THEY DEALER SENT THE INFORMATION INTO HYUNDAI CORPORATE, OUTCOME IS NO FREE ENGINE I HAVE TO PAY 3,000 OUT OF POCKET TO HAVE A NEW ENGINE INSTALLED. IN RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM ONLINE I AM NOT ALONE IN MY PAIN! SHAME ON HYUNDAI YOUR CAR SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE LEAST WANTED LIST! I WOULDN'T PURCHASE ANOTHER HYUNDAI IF IT COST ONE CENT! HYUNDAI IS WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUES WITH THE ENGINES...
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THERE WAS A TICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO NORTHTOWN HYUNDAI (3675 SHERIDAN DR, AMHERST, NY 14226, (716) 992-6536) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 15444915. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
MY VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 100K MILES ON IT. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT WITHOUT ANY ISSUES AND GETTING ROUTINE CHECKUPS AND OIL CHANGES. I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE DOWN THE ROAD (ALMOST ON THE HIGHWAY) AND DURING MY DRIVE MY ENGINE BLEW OUT AND THE CAR IMMEDIATELY STOPPED. DUE TO BEING A SECOND OWNER OF THE VEHICLE, I AM NOT COVERED UNDER THE FACTORY WARRANTY UNDER 100K MILES. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH, IT SEEM THAT BOTH HYUNDAI AND KIA HAVE ENGINE ISSUES; HOWEVER, ONLY CERTAIN MAKES/MODELS ARE COVERED WHEN ELANTRAS ALSO HAVE THE SAME ISSUES.
VEHICLE HAS HAD ENGINE TICKING NOISES STARTING AROUND 50,000 MILES. ON 3 OCCASIONS THE DEALER ADVISED IT WAS A NON ISSUE. OTHER VEHICLES FROM THE SAME MANUFACTURER AND WITH THE SAME ENGINE HAVE HAD RECALLS DUE TO AN ENGINE MANUFACTURING PROCESS DEFECT. ENGINE NOISE HAS PROGRESSED FROM A SLIGHT TICKING TO A HARD KNOCKING SOUND AND DIFFICULTY IDLING UPON INITIAL START UP WITH NO DIAGNOSTIC CODES
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ENGINE MADE A DISTINCT TAPPING NOISE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, AND WAS PERSISTENT FOR THE PAST THREE MONTHS. JONES JUNCTION HYUNDAI (1504 BELAIR RD, BEL AIR, MD 21014) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE ANY DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES TO HELP IDENTIFY THE SOURCE OF THE NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 97,500.
TAKATA RECALL: MY CAR WILL REV THE ENGINE REALLY HIGH OVER AND OVER AGAIN ON ITS OWN RATHER THAN IDLE WHILE IN PARK. ALSO WHILE IN DRIVE AND THE BREAK PRESSED, THE ENGINE WILL REV ON ITS OWN LIKES ITS TRYING TO MOVE FORWARD WITHOUT ME PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. THIS IS DANGEROUS. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MULTIPLE OCCASSIONS NOT JUST WHAT IS NOTED BELOW.
INTERMITTENT ENGINE IGNITION FAILURE. ENGINE DOES NOT START WHEN GEAR SHIFT IS IN PARK AND KEY IS PROPERLY INSERTED AND TURNED. GRINDING NOISE AND ENGINE DOES NOT START. PROBLEM OCCURS UP TO FIVE TIMES PER WEEK UPON ATTEMPTING TO START THE CAR. THE ISSUE BEGAN IN APRIL 2018 AND IS ONGOING ON A WEEKLY BASIS. THE DEFECT HAS RESULTED IN UNRELIABLE TRANSPORTATION. I REPLACED THE IGNITION COILS AND IGNITION PLATE WAS CLEANED. PROBLEM WAS NOT RESOLVED. MECHANIC CANNOT IDENTIFY THE DEFECT. SIMILAR ISSUES HAVE BEEN REPORTED WITH HYUNDAI SONATAS, RESULTING IN A RECALL. MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT INTERMITTENT HYUNDAI ELANTRA 2012 IGNITION FAILURE CAN BE FOUND ONLINE.
WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH ON LEFT LANE, ENGINE SUDDENLY DIED AND CAR SKIDDED A LITTLE BECAUSE BRAKE WAS DEPLOYED AUTOMATICALLY OR THE WHEEL LOCKED. IT MADE 2 BRAKING/SKIDDING SOUND. THEN SUDDENLY I WAS ABLE TO STEER AGAIN AND POSITION THE CAR TO THE RIGHT FOR SAFETY. ENGINE WONT TURN ON. BURNING SMELL AND SOME SMOKE MAYBE FROM LOCKED BRAKE? CAR TOWED TO NEAREST HYUNDAI SHOP.
TAKATA RECALL CAR DOESN'T WANT TO START AND STRUGGLES TO DO SO. HAVE REPLACED BATTERY AND KEY FOB BATTERIES. THIS HAS TO BE A STARTER ISSUE, POSSIBLY AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. SAYS "KEY OUT" WHILE I'M DRIVING IT HALF THE TIME. I AM AFRAID IT WILL CUT OFF WHILE I'M DRIVING IT! I HAVE ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 2 YEARS! BEEN DOING THIS FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS.
VEHICLE STALLED TWICE WHILE DRIVING. ONCE WHILE MERGING FROM A HIGHWAY ON TO A SURFACE STREET. HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE INVOLVING 2012 ELANTRAS AND OTHER YEARS AS WELL. THIS ISSUE WAS ALSO PRESENT IN THE SONATA, AND ULTIMATELY WAS SETTLED WITH A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT. SPEAKING WITH AN ATTORNEY WE ARE ALSO AWARE OF INSTANCES WHERE VEHICLES HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE AS A RESULT OF THESE DEFECTIVE ENGINES.
DRIVING DOWN ROAD ENGINE DIED TOWED TO DEALER TOLD NEEDED NEW ENGINE HAD ONE AT 44,000 DONE UNDER WARRANTY. THIS ENGINE LASTED TO 76,000 NOW NEEDS ANOTHER ENGINE. ENGINE IS SO BACKORDERED DEALERSHIP TELLING ME 6 MONTHS. SO MANY ELANTRA ENGINES BLOWING UP SHOULD BE A RECALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AFTER PULLING INTO MY PARKING SPACE, I WENT TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND IT LUNGED FORWARD SEVERAL FEET ONTO THE PAVEMENT AND UP 2 STEPS IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE...THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, AT THE CURB
TAPPING FROM ENGINE. HAVE ASKED DEALER TO INSPECT AND THEY SAID THERE IS NO ISSUE FOR THE LAST FOUR OIL CHANGES AND INSPECTIONS. WITH THE RECALL OF OTHER HYUNDAI, I'M THINKING THIS MAYBE THE SAME ISSUE.
ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK TO AUTO ZONE & VIDE 0713 & P0711. I ALSO TOOK MY VEHICLE TO AAMCO WHICH VERIFY THE SENSOR IN THE VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED HOWEVER THEY HAVE TO TAKE THE TRANSMISSION APART TO FIX. I ONLY HAVE 31,000 ON MY VEHICLE. HAS THERE BEEN A RECALL ALREADY OR DO YOU EXPECT THIS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER 1000,000 EVEN THOUGH I AM 2ND OWNER. THEY DID GIVE ME A CARD FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE

CHANGED OIL AND BRIGHT GOLD LOOKING METAL FLAKES ARE IN THE OIL. MECHANICS SAY THEY ARE PARTS OF THE MAIN BEARINGS. ENGINE IS GOING TO BLOW UP. 62,303MILES
ALL OIL CHANGES FOR THIS CAR HAS BEEN DONE AT A DEALERSHIP SINCE MY STEPFATHER BOUGHT THIS CAR. UPON HIS DEATH, THE CAR HAD 111,000 MILES WHEN THE TITLE WAS TRANSFERRED TO ME. COLD WEATHER WAS APPROACHING AND I WANTED TO GET AN OIL CHANGE DONE. THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT GET ME IN FOR A WEEK AND EVEN CANCELLED AN APPOINTMENT I HAD TO I WENT TO EXHAUST PRO. WHEN THE TEMPERATURE GOT TO 20 BELOW ZERO WIND CHILL THE ENGINE STARTED TICKING. I TOOK THE CAR TO DEALERSHIP AND HAD THEM CHANGE OIL BUT THE TICKING PERSISTED. I TOOK THE CAR TO DEALERSHIP TO INQUIRE ABOUT TICKING NOISE AND WAS INFORMED THERE ARE METAL SHAVINGS IN OIL AND ENGINE NEEDS REPLACED COSTING $9400. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2012 AND 2013 ELANTRA BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN DONE LIKE THE SONATA. I FEEL THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD REPLACE...
MY STEERING IS LOOSE AND THE WHEEL CLUNKS AND RATTLES. SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE THE STEERING WHEEL WILL COME RIGHT OFF. I CAN HIT THE SLIGHTEST BUMP AND IT WILL RATTLE AND SHAKE LIKE I RAN OVER A HUGE POT HOLE. ALSO, WHEN I'M DRIVING THE CAR WILL SUDDENLY SLOW DOWN AND WHINE LIKE I HIT THE BRAKES EVEN WHEN I DIDN'T. I WAS ALMOST REAR-ENDED WHEN I HIT THE GAS BUT THE CAR DECIDED IT WANTED TO SUDDENLY SLOW DOWN A FEW SECONDS LATER. THERE IS SOMETHING TERRIBLY WRONG HERE. THE ENGINE IS ALSO MAKING A TICKING/KNOCKING NOISE WHEN WARMING UP. THIS HAPPENS DAILY.
WHEN THE WEATHER GOT COLD THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE. TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC AND HE SAID THE BLOCK WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND TO CONTACT HYUNDAI SINCE THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2012 ELANTRA. FYI: THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER HAS COME ON FOR THIS PROBLEM.
PERIODICALLY (INCLUDING TODAY) MY ELANTRA WILL NOT START. ALL ELECTRONICS TURN ON AND THE BATTERY, ENGINE, OIL INDICATORS APPEAR ON THE DASH. AS MANY OTHERS HAVE MENTIONED I WAIT 5-10 MINUTES AND TRY MY CAR AGAIN IT WILL WORK JUST FINE. HAD A FEW DIAGNOSTICS WHERE THE DEALER SUSPECTED BATTERY OR OIL CHANGE BUT I'VE HAD SEVERAL BATTERIES SINCE OEM AND KEEP UP TO DATE ON SYNTHETIC OIL. SEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING RANGE SHIFT BEING THE CULPRIT. EITHER WAY I'LL BE TAKING IT TO BE INSPECTED BEFORE IT GETS ANY WORSE/WILL NOT START AT ALL.
WHILE IN MOTION, CAR JOLTS AS TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT BLINKS AS WELL AS THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT. ENGINE THEN SHUTS OFF. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES OVER A 2 MONTH PERIOD, AT A VARIETY OF SPEEDS AND ON BOTH HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER (HENDERSON HYUNDAI, 46 N BOULDER HWY, HENDERSON, NC 89015) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL INJECTOR WAS CLOGGED AND THE VEHICLE HAD AN OIL LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DOES NOT SHIFT PROPERLY AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES ON AND OFF THE SPEED SENSORS IN TRANSMISSIONS MAY HAVE FAILED
MY 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA BEGAN HAVING ACCELERATION PROBLEMS FOR THE PAST 6 TO 9 MONTHS. AS I STEP ON THE GAS AT APPROXIMATELY 30 TO 40 MPH THE AUTOMOBILE KICKS, BUCKS AND DOES NOT ACCELERATE AS INTENDED. MY HYUNDAI DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP/ASSEMBLY ($700) AND IT SEEMED TO GET WORSE.FAILURE TO ACCELERATE AS EXPECTED IS A DANGER IF YOU ARE TRYING TO ENTER A BUSY HIGHWAY OR TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF ANOTHER SPEEDING VEHICLE. THIS SEEMS TO OCCUR AT SPEEDS UP TO 65 MPH WHEN STEPPING ON THE GAS. THIS HAPPENS ON A REGULAR BASIS BUT NOT EVERY DAY.
"TAKATA RECALL" POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE. ROUGH IDLE AT COLD START. SMELL GAS AS WELL. RANDOMLY BLOWS HUGE AMOUNTS OF SMOKE OUT THE TAIL PIPE WHILE ACCELERATING. "EXAMPLE" MERGING ON INTERSTATE. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE VEHICLE REACHED 50,000 MILES. ALL MAINTENANCE WORK HAS BEEN DONE. NOW AT 77,986 RUNS LIKE A GRASS CUTTER. JUST RUNS ROUGH.
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START MY VEHICLE IT WOULD NOT START. ALL LIGHTS CAME ON, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER. AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF AND SITTING FOR 10 MINUTES IT FINALLY STARTED. TWO DAYS LATER MY VEHICLE DID THE SAME EXACT THING. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE SHOP AND THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. WHILE AT THE CAR SHOP ANOTHER ELANTRA OWNER (2011 MODEL YEAR) WAS THERE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I AM UNSURE EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM CAN BE BUT I DID LOOK ONLINE AND MANY OWNERS FOR THE HYUNDAI ELANTRA MODEL YEARS 2011-2013 COMPLAINED OF THE SAME ISSUE.
I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH A 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. IT CURRENTLY HAS 84,585 MILES AND I PURCHASED IT USED FROM A DEALERSHIP AT 48,484 MILES. IT WAS INSPECTED BY A HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT IN AUGUST OF THIS YEAR AFTER MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE AND STALLING CONTINUALLY. IT WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITH THE SAME EXACT ISSUE THE SONATA HAS WHICH IS COVERED IN THE CLASS ACTION SUIT, BUT OUR DEALERS REQUEST FOR A NEW SHORT BLOCK WAS DENIED BY HYUNDAI. THERE ARE METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL VALVE, AND ALSO IN THE OIL PAN CAUSED BY SHEARING FROM THE CRANKSHAFT. THERE APPEAR TO BE OTHERS WITH THE SAME CRANKSHAFT ISSUE THAT OWN ELANTRA MODELS AS WELL. THE FIRST TROUBLE STARTED WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60 MILES/HOUR, MY CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I HAD TO DRIVE AT THE SPEED THE CAR WOULD CHOOSE TO RUN AND IN A FEW MINUTES IT WOULD WORK FINE AGAIN. BUT THIS KEPT HAPPENING WHEN I WOULD ACCELERATE THE CAR ON HIGHWAYS AND I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER WHO SAID IT WAS SENSOR PROBLEMS. ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON WHEN I USE AIR CONDITIONING, OR USE THE HEAD LIGHTS. CAR WILL RANDOMLY NOT TURN ON ALTHOUGH BATTERY IS NEW AND MAKES A HUMMING NOISE AS I TURN THE KEY.
BROUGHT IT IN TO GET MY OIL CHANGED AND THEY TOLD ME I NEED A NEW ENGINE AS IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT THE RECALLED HYUNDAI SONATA ENGINES HAVE.
MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON @ 25900 MILES & MANUAL STATES BRING INTO DEALER RIGHT AWAY, THIS WAS ALSO CONFIRMED WITH A CALL TO THE DEALER.. WORK ORDER STATES"TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN" STATES TECHNICIAN UPDATED ELECTRICAL CONTROL UNIT, & CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. MY CONCERN WHY IS THIS NOT A RECALL ITEM. SINCE THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN PUT OUR IN THIS ISSUE.
ENGINE TICKING. BROUGHT IT IN AND THEY INFORMED ME I NEED AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME IF I DO NOT GET THE ENGINE FIXED AND CONTINUE TO DRIVE IT, IT COULD STALL AND OR POTENTIALLY BLOW UP. VEHICLE IS UNDER 100K MILES, HOWEVER I AM SECOND OWNER, SO IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I DO HAVE ALL OF MY SERVICE RECORDS, I DEFINITELY MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE SO THERE IS NO REASON TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE ON MY BEHALF. HAVE NOT GOTTEN IT FIXED YET AS I DO NOT HAVE 8K LAYING AROUND TO DO SO. HYUNDAI NEEDS TO RECALL THEIR 2012 ELANTRA ENGINES AS IT IS A MANUFACTURER PROBLEM.
ELANTRA WITH 1.8L ENGINE DEVELOPED AN ENGINE "TICKING" NOISE AT 60K MILES THAT DEVELOPED INTO A "KNOCKING" NOISE SHORTLY THERE AFTER. MAIN ROD BEARING FAILURE. HAD TO HAVE ENGINE SHORT BLOCK REPLACED. VEHICLE HAD SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE THAT INCLUDED OIL CHANGES MORE FREQUENTLY THAN REQUIRED. ENGINE WOULD HAVE DESTROYED ITSELF AND STALLED IF CONTINUED WITHOUT REPAIR. LIMITED SEARCH ON INTERNET SHOWED MANY OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR TO NHTSA RECALL NHTSA REFERENCE #15V568000 ON HYUNDAI SONATA WITH 2.0L AND 2.4L ENGINES.
THE ENGINE IS MAKING A TICKING NOISE. WAS TOLD THAT THE LIFTERS NEED TO BE REPLACED AND THERE IS TOO MUCH BACK PRESSURE. I WILL NEED A NEW ENGINE. SEVERAL OTHER MODELS ARE UNDER A RECALL BUT NOT THIS BRAND.

THEY SAID THE CAR HAD SEVERE OIL SLUDGE THROUGHOUT ENGINE. MY CAR WAS MADE AT THE SAME ALABAMA MANUFACTURING PLANT AS THE RECALLED HYUNDAI SONATAS THAT WERE RECALLED FOR ENGINE FAILURE. MY CAR IS STILL UNDER THE 5 YEAR WARRANTY. HYUNDAI OF AMERICA WILL NOT REPAIR OR REPLACE MY ENGINE BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ALL MY OIL AND MAINTENANCE RECEIPTS. I HAVE ANOTHER 2006 SATURN THAT I MAINTAINED THE SAME WAY AND IT IS DRIVING PERFECTLY. PLEASE CONSIDER A RECALL FOR ENGINE FAILURE FOR ELANDRAS BUILT IN ALABAMA IN 2012. I HAVE SEEN ONLINE OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR HAVE SIMILAR COMPLAINTS.

DEALER REFUSES TO CONTRIBUTE ANY MONEY. WANTS $6200 TO REPAIR WITH REMANUF ENGINE. WON'T PROVIDE FORM ESTIMATE. CAR CANNOT BE SAFELY DRIVEN. THERE WERE NO PREVIOUS WARNINGS: NO OVERHEATING, NO OIL LIGHTS, NO NOISES. ALL DEALER WOULD DO IS REMOVE VALVE COVER AND SEND PICS WHICH IT SAYS SHOWS SLUDGE.
RANDOM NO START. PUSH BUTTON START WILL JUST MAKE ONE CLICK SOUND AND NOT START (THIS IS NOT A LOW BATTERY CLICKING SOUND). AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS, THE ENGINE WILL START. ONE TIME IT TOOK OVER 10 MINUTES OF PUSHING THE START BUTTON ON AND OFF TO FINALLY GET IT TO START. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN AT RANDOM TIMES. IT WILL START FINE FOR MONTHS AND THEN JUST RANDOMLY NOT START. IT HAPPENED IN THE PAST AN JUST STARTED HAPPENING AGAIN ABOUT A WEEK AGO.

OUR 2012 ELANTRA BEGAN MAKING KNOCKING SOUNDS DURING COLD STARTS. THE NOISE WAS FAINTER WHEN THE ENGINE WAS WARM BUT NEVER DISAPPEARED COMPLETELY. THE SOUND BECAME LOUDER WHEN THE WEATHER WAS COLDER. WHEN I ORIGINALLY TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, I TOLD THEM THAT I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM MAY HAVE BEEN THE TIMING BELT BUT WAS INFORMED THAT THE 2012 HAD A TIMING CHAIN AND NOT A BELT. WHEN THE NOISE BECAME TOO LOUD, I FINALLY TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK OF THE ENGINE AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A DEFECTIVE CONNECTING ROD BEARING AND A NEW ENGINE WAS NECESSARY. I AM AWARE THAT THE 2011-2013 SONATA WAS RECALLED IN 2015 FOR THE SAME PROBLEM BUT THOUGHT THAT THE ELANTRA WAS EXEMPT.
