I’m reporting a repeat engine misfire on my 2013 Honda Odyssey (P0303 – cylinder 3). Honda repaired this issue in 2018 under Service Bulletin 13-081, which followed the Soto v. Honda settlement. Now in 2025, the exact same failure has returned—same code, same cylinder, same symptoms. Honda issued a new bulletin, 25-061 (June 17, 2025), covering 2013–2016 Odysseys with misfire codes P0301–P0304. It extends powertrain warranty coverage to 10 years or 150,000 miles, and includes a grace period through Jan 31, 2026 for any affected vehicle, regardless of mileage or age. My vehicle meets all criteria, yet Honda refuses full coverage, saying my VIN isn’t flagged and they can’t override that due to NHTSA restrictions. This seems inconsistent. The bulletin clearly applies to my make, model, year, and exact engine fault. The misfire affects drivability and long-term engine health. My 2013 Honda Odyssey is experiencing a serious engine malfunction related to excessive oil consumption and spark plug fouling. On [XXX], the Check Engine Light came on and the vehicle began shaking. A diagnostic inspection at a Honda dealership revealed DTC P0301 (Cylinder 1 Misfire). Three spark plugs in Bank 1 were heavily fouled with oil. The technician recommended piston ring replacement, noting that oil had leaked into the combustion chamber. This issue is consistent with well-known engine problems associated with Honda's VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) system. TSBs such as A13-081 and 11-033 have addressed similar issues in the past, but my vehicle is no longer covered under the extended warranty. I am a low-income international student currently living in the U.S. with my family. This defect creates financial hardship and safety concern. The contact owns a 2013 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle was shuddering with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 13-081 (MIL Comes On with DTCs P0301 thru P0304); however, the vehicle was not covered by the TSB. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 175,000.
1. Car would not stop, while backing out of parking space and almost backed into parked car, transmission put into drive and moved forward hit curb, hopped curb and slammed into embankment. 4/12/23 2. Car would not stop driving down steep driveway and drove onto MLK JR BLVD fortunately avoided any other cars. Proceeded uphill slowly and brakes seeded to begin to work better as transmission warmed up. 4/19/23 3. We have not been driving the car since. 4. No filings reported
ENGINE WILL SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL FLASH. MISFIRING. PISTONS AND SPARK PLUGS NEED TO BE CHANGED. SAME ISSUE AS FOUND IN SERVICE BULLETIN 13-081. HONDA DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM BUT WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIR BECAUSE MY VIN UNEXPLAINABLY NOT INCLUDED.
ON APRIL 4, 2019, WHEN MY VEHICLE REACHED APPROXIMATELY 104,000 MILES, THE CAR'S ENGINE LIGHT AND VSA LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR IDLED ROUGHLY AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. IT LIMPED ALL THE WAY TO THE MECHANIC. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM, IDENTIFIED BY THE PROBLEM CODE GENERATED BY THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER AS P0301: CYLINDER #1 MISFIRE. THE MECHANIC REPLACED ALL THE SPARK PLUGS AND THE IGNITION COIL FOR THAT CYLINDER. TWO MONTHS LATER, WITH THE ODOMETER AT APPROXIMATELY 107,000 MILES, THE CAR AGAIN MALFUNCTIONED, WITH A ROUGH IDLE, ENGINE AND VSA LIGHT, AND LIMPING PERFORMANCE. THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO THE SAME INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO TOLD US THE SAME PROBLEM CODE (P0301) WAS GENERATED, INDICATING A MISFIRE IN THE FIRST CYLINDER. DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY 70 MILES PER HOUR AND I ADJUSTED IN MY SEAT. MY KNEE KNOCKED THE IGNITION FROM THE "ON" POSITION TO OFF. I QUICKLY TURNED THE KEY BACK TO THE ON POSITION. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND WENT OFF AND REMAINED OFF.
IN A UNPREDICTABLE MANNER, THE VAN LOOSES POWER WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE AT SPEEDS OF 35-65 MPH. TWICE I THOUGHT THERE WAS A REAL CHANCE WE WOULD GET REAR ENDED. HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED ON AT LEAST 20 OCCASIONS OVER A TWO WEEK PERIOD. 1) I WOULD TRY TO ACCELERATE AT SPEEDS OF 35-65 MPH AND USUALLY WHEN GOING UP HILL. 2) THE VAN WOULD NOT RESPOND (ACCELERATE) BUT RATHER THE ECO LIGHT WOULD FLASH ON AND OFF 2 OR 3 TIMES AND MANY TIMES THE RPMS WOULD DROP RAPIDLY FROM 2000 DOWN TO 1000 OR SO. 3) EVEN AFTER 1-3 SECONDS NO RESPONSE. 4) IF I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR AND THEN DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AGAIN, IT WOULD THEN RESPOND NORMALLY. WE PURCHASED A 2013 HONDA ODYSSEY EXL 1 YEAR AGO (7/18/16). WE IMMEDIATELY EXPERIENCED EXCESSIVE VIBRATION OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE DRIVING, AND ALSO BRAKING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE DEALER REPLACED THE FRONT TIRES ABOUT 4 MONTHS OUT TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I DIDN'T WORK. WE ASKED THEM TO CONSIDER THE ROTORS AS THE ISSUE, BUT THEY WERE RELUCTANT SINCE THEY WERE JUST RESURFACED THEM BEFORE WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. EVENTUALLY, THEY DID AGREE, AND ALL FOUR ROTORS NEEDED RESURFACING. THE SERVICE DEPT TOLD US OUR 8 MONTH OLD TIRES HAD WEAR BEYOND THE NORMAL AMOUNT, AND SUGGESTED IT WAS PROBABLY CAUSED BY THE VIBRATION PROBLEMS. WHEN DRIVING - OUR TRACTION CONTROL AND ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME ON SEVERAL TIMES AND THE ENGINE HAS BEEN SO ROUGH THAT WE HAD TO STOP AND LET IT COOL DOWN BEFORE TAKING IT IMMEDIATELY HOME.
