Engine failure occurred while transferring passengers in a busy road. The vehicle started making noises at first I thought it was a belt that might have been going bad. I looked at all the gages which did not indicate any issues with the battery or oil pressure or any vital issues that might show and merged to the right lane. Less than 2 miles down the road engine shut off and I was able to coast into a parking lot. I took this vehicle as requested for the recall and the only recommendation was to start using OS 0W40 and a new oil cap indicating the required oil type. These vehicles should be pulled off the roads, they create a huge safety hazard on our roads and sooner or later someone is going to get killed.
GM released a special warranty for the coolant control valve. My vin number does not qualify but it is currently at the dealership getting replaced because it failed. I don't understand how the same exact vehicle with a different Vin qualifies but mine does not. I am within the time frame and mileage of their warranty for their special coverage but because my vin isn't on the list I don't get the special coverage/warranty.
Engine was replaced pursuant to Recall 25V-274. We have driven approximately 4,000 miles since the engine was replaced and all of the oil in the car is “gone”. This match’s with other consumers grouped in investigation RQ26001.
Traveling at 70MPH the engine failed. There were no warning lights or alerts prior to the engine failing. No power at all after failure. Was able to coast to the shoulder of the busy highway without getting into an accident but was then left stranded as the engine would not restart. Upon inspection at GMC dealer I was informed there was a "catastrophic engine failure" and the entire engine would need to be replaced. Note this vehicle was subject a recall for similar engine failures and deemed not to be at risk after inspection by a GMC dealership.
Two weeks ago I heard a faint ticking sound. I had a professional look at it and they said that I had a cylinder sticking and to add an additive the next oil change. I still had 1,500 miles until then and so I did not do that. That noise stopped a day later. Last Friday, it started to tick again, and then it got very loud. I live rurally and was 45 minutes from home. The engine went from ticking to full clunking and very low power in just a moment. I luckily found a small engine shop to check the codes, but as I was parked there, the car would not go in reverse! He had to clear the codes to get it to go into reverse. I had to then slowly drive 45 minutes back to our small town. I drove to and immediately parked it at...
While driving on a major highway at approximately 60 to 65 mph the vehicle shut down loss of power and steering without any warning lights. I was able to safely maneuver the vehicle to the emergency lane and contacted AAA to have it towed to nearest dealership. A fuel pump module was replaced- I have been following gmc recent recall of 600k which gives same scenario for their larger engine failure not including the 5.3L Ecotec V8 that I own. I experienced the same failure. Although it was fixed as a sensor module fault, I believe it’s a bigger problem that is not being addressed.
On 8/22/25 was brought to my local GMC dealer for the L87 engine propulsion recall. The dealership tested and said the vehicle passed the test. On 12/3/25 while driving on a multi lane highway the vehicle engine stopped abruptly. The message restart engine appeared on the dashboard. I had to negotiate other vehicle travelling at highway speeds to get to coast off to a side street. The transmission went into "park" and could not be shifted to neutral with a message on the dashboard "transmission cannot be shifted in this configuration". I was blocking the roadway and responding police asked that I attempt to restart the vehicle. I did this numerous times but would not start and the battery ran down. The vehicle was towed to the GMC dealer who said the battery failed and replaced it at my cost even after I told them it was fine and run...
I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the vehicle I purchased from your dealership. Despite my expectations at the time of purchase, the vehicle has not met the standards that were represented to me. This letter is intended to address my concerns regarding the vehicle’s features, undisclosed recalls, and significant mechanical and safety issues discovered immediately after delivery. I discovered—through the GMC mobile application, not through the dealership—that the vehicle had two to three active recalls at the time I received it, including recalls involving the engine and transmission. I was never informed of these recalls by the dealership prior to or at the time of sale, which is extremely concerning. After discovering the recalls myself, I scheduled a service appointment. I was informed that the recalls were addressed and marked as resolved in GMC Springdale. Despite the recalls being cleared, only two days later, the vehicle began...
Purchased used vehicle in June 2025 when purchased was not advised about an open recall vehicle loss power on 07-29-2025 called dealer advised that car had loss power while driving with entire family in vehicle. Brought vehicle in for checking said open recall they ran a scope test said it passed and only a high velocity oil change would be needed this was on 08-06-2025 two weeks later the vehicle loss power again while driving and caused a vehicle accident and bodily injury and GM states that this was an alleged issue when reported. Will not honor warranty on engine.
the digital gauge cluster suddenly black out and do not show any information such as speed, rpm, signal, etc at all. this is very serious issue for driver and passenger safety.
At highway speed, in heavy traffic, and falling snow, the engine seized with sudden loss of power, including loss of brake and steering sensitivity. We were traveling downhill so, while avoiding other traffic and weather, maintained momentum to pull over to the side. We were stranded at night in snowy weather in remote Utah. It took hours to get towed to the nearest town, Fillmore, where the mechanic determined that the engine was seized and that no mechanic in the town could repair the issue. GM would not tow vehicle to our home, they would only tow to nearest dealership - which was farther away from our home (over 3 hours away). After repeated attempts with GM for tow assistance over the course of 13 days, we towed the vehicle to Salt Lake City, our home city at our own expense. The Dealer said 6 of 8 rod bushings were...
#1April 2024 Engine locked at 42k miles on freeway 70+mph engines basically turns off and in full traffic was barely able to make it off way to the first exit. Yes it was reported since it was under warranty they replaced the engine. No engine was not inspected by anyone ourshould of dealership service dept. no warnings what so ever. #2 August 2025 again engine locked up on freeway at 75+ miles per hour again you only have enough time to try to make it to the shoulder, this could have caused accident both times. car is currently at shop and they say it has a recall so they will replace engine, again. I bought this bran new zero miles so I could have a safe car and this car is not safe at all. The only sign I had was it was starting to lag when turning on I...
Nothing has yet failed, but my engine has consumed oil but is apparently within the GM standard of less than 1 quart in 2,000 miles. My vehicle is also involved in the GM loss of engine propulsion recall that I was notified of on 4/24, but a remedy for my vin is still not available. How can something that could lead to loss of engine function take this long to remedy?
On every cold start this vehicle blow dark gray smoke from exhaust. I hear some knocking in from the engine. I just bought this vehicle and find out later on it got some serious engine recall. I travel with my kids and put my kids lives on line, if engine fails while I am driving it.
I had a sudden catastrophic engine failure 3/13/25. I previously filled out an NHTSA report, but I would like to add to my case. My engine was towed to the dealership and replaced. 4/25/25 the check engine light started coming on intermittently again. The service suspension notification, replace the battery in your key fob notification (which was replaced in February), and the check engine light have been coming on intermittently since then. All of these things occurred prior to engine failure the first time. The dealership would not look at our vehicle again until our vin was called for the recall. 6/22/25 the suspension sensor was replaced and the recall “test” was done. 6/27/25 the service suspension light was back flashing and GM was unable to find any codes. 6/29/25 the check engine light was flashing again. I believe my vehicle is going to have another engine failure. GM did...
I recently purchased a used 2022 Yukon XL Denali (with 6.2 Engine). 8 days after purchase, I was pulling a boat trailer, when all of the sudden the vehicle lost power on I-80. The vehicle automatically shifted to Neutral. I was luckily able to get to the left lane and there happened to be an offramp right there that I was able to coast to and be off the freeway. I pushed the Park button and then tried to restart the engine. Then I noticed the check engine light was on. Nothing happened when I pushed the start button. I called a tow truck and could not get the vehicle out of Park. The tow truck operator had to pull the vehicle on to the flatbed with the rear wheels locked in Park. I got the vehicle taken to a dealer and they said the engine needed to be replaced....
The engine system (6.2L V8 L87) in my 2022 GMC Yukon XL failed due to a known manufacturer defect tied to NHTSA Campaign 25V-274. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The issue involves the risk of sudden loss of propulsion, which could result in a crash or injury to myself or others. This is a serious safety concern, and I do not feel safe operating the vehicle in its current condition. The defect has been acknowledged by GMC, but there is no remedy or repair currently available. I have contacted the selling dealership (Rick Hendrick Buick GMC, Duluth, GA) repeatedly for the past three weeks with no returned calls. I also contacted GMC corporate, who confirmed the recall but refused a buyback or replacement because no repair has occurred — even though a fix does not exist. They offered a loyalty voucher that does not come close to...
Since purchase there has been a grinding noise when the vehicle is initially started up and put into reverse. I am worried that this is associated with the current engine recall that is on this vehicle. There is an increased risk associated with this vehicle as I am paralyzed and unable to exit the vehicle quickly, which is increased drastically when I have toddler and baby in vehicle. This risk comes from the reported 42 potential fires related to this recall in malfunctioning engines. There have been no warning lamps or indicators that have appeared to date.
My wife and I were going 70 plus MPh on [XXX] in Georgia in the far left lane. Our car completely lost power were had to maneuver across 2 Lanes to get to the emergency lane it was very scary traffic was blowing horns and it was awful. We made it to the emergency lane and proceeded north at a creeping pace with engine making lots of noise. We made it to a hotel next to [XXX] we were in Savannah Georgia. We tried to contact the local GMC dealer but it was after hours so we stayed the night and next morning got a tow to Critz GMC. At Critz we were Informed our engine was beyond repair and needed replacement. They proceeded to offer me $10,000 on a trade in, said it would take 3 months to get a replacement engine so I called my dealer back home...
I was driving down the highway at approximately 70mph and the vehicle began to lose power. It was then apparent that the engine was no longer on as the screen read “press start” to restart engine or something like that. I was in the left hand lane and had to navigate through traffic without power to the right hand shoulder. I barely made it off the road before the car stopped moving entirely. I had purchased the car only 19 days prior. I have 3 children living at home and was very fortunate that none of them were in the car with me, I had no warning of the failure.
I saw a recall for the 6.2L GMC engine announced. I am wondering if its similar to the 5.3L GMC engine. I was on the way to canada from new jersey with my family where all of a sudden my car started shaking near rochester, i had asked and reported this to GMC and they said nothing they can do since it was out of warranty. I had to pay out of pocket for repair of my engine and it was a bent lifter on top of the piston. I am not sure how that happens. The dealership had indicated they are getting a lot of other vehicles with the same issue and engine problems Vehicle with a sticker price of 80k, then needing another 10k repair within 2 years of owning it.
As I was driving on the highway and the check engine light came on, few seconds later I started losing speed, I could not accelerate. The vehicle then put me into Neutral while I was still moving. I put my flashers on immediately as traffic was quickly coming up behind me. I was able to find a spot off the side of the highway to slowly pull over to. When I stopped it was still in Neutral. I put it into park. Engine was not running. I tried to start the engine again, but nothing would happen. Had to get a tow and have been told the motor needs replaced. The dealership has no timeline of when a motor will be available.
ENGINE FAILURE We were stranded on the side of the road on a trip back from Florida Vehicle had to be towed the a dealership back in Houston no warnings This is the second engine failure (original engine and the 1st replacement engine) basically we are on the 3rd engine in this vehicle.
On 1/3/25 the engine in my 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali started making knocking noise while driving and then it happened again when turning on the engine. The check engine light came on, so I had the vehicle towed to the nearest GM dealership. When the dealership drained the oil they found metal shavings in the oil. The vehicle had roughly 44,000 miles on it at the time. This put my family and young children at risk as they were in the vehicle when this happened.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to pull over safely. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the main rod bearing had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired after three months. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 48,044.
1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power while driving, which has been attributed to a blown fuse and an underlying engine failure. The dealership has confirmed that the engine needs to be repaired. The vehicle is currently at the dealership and is available for inspection upon request. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My [XXX] son was driving the vehicle alone at night over a busy bridge when the car suddenly lost power without warning. He had to coast down the bridge in heavy traffic with limited control, putting himself and surrounding drivers at serious risk. Fortunately, he was able to pull over safely, but the situation could have easily led to a serious accident or injury. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by...
Engine failure without any notice, loss of power, engine making extreme lifter noises
The check engine light would intermittently turn on since purchasing my brand new vehicle in 2022. The service center kept it for several weeks, but could not find a problem. They said it was a “bad batch of gas” the first time I brought it in. The second time they said it was an engine misfire. They said as long as the light flashes but doesn’t stay on, it is not concerning. March 13, 2025 as I was driving my car down the road my car suddenly shifted to neutral. I had to coast to the side of the road (with my children in the car). I turned my car off and it would not turn back on. I had it towed to the dealership and they said the engine had failed. They replaced it, but could not tell me if they replaced it with the same version engine or...
Car consuming too much oil, engine oil very low every 2000 miles. GM claims that 2000 is acceptable but new oil should go to 4000 at the least. Will not do anything to the engine or pistons and claim that car has too many engine hours due to idling which I do not do. They are unwilling to fix this problem, been dealing with them for over a year and my warranty is about to expire. There are many complaints online about this same issue.
The 6.2 l98 engine has seized in my 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali with under 50k miles. It has been sitting at a dealership waiting for a new engine sense February 13th 2025. It is still unknown to me when I will be getting a replacement engine.
Reported electrical issues beginning one month after purchasing the vehicle. I reported issues for the first year including the running boards not working, entertainment system not operating, hard engine restart/stalling and the reverse camera not engaging. February 2024 the car was driving down the highway and a loud noise began in the engine. Entire car stopped running. Placed in the shop for 29 days to replace the engine, battery, computer, and other items. The next day engine began to stall again. Monday at 10am the car stalled again and was unable to be turned back on. Car was then taken for another 15 days fuel injectors, spark plugs and other items changed. Again received the car back and had issues with stalling and engine revving issues. Turned into dealership and bought another GMC Yukon. GMC refused to admit an issue and refused to help. They only changed out the initial engine...
While driving in the left lane of the interstate at 70 mph, the engine abruptly shut off, shifting the car into neutral. The dashboard read start engine, which did not compute immediately. I quickly navigated to the right lane to assess the situation and eventually to the shoulder of the highway where I parked the vehicle. I was unable to to restart and had the vehicle towed to the dealership. It took ~6 hours for the Onstar tow service to arrive.
BATTERY: Vehicle died at highway speed 1/12/23 with 25,404 miles on it. Towed to dealership, battery died while driving. Vehicle would not start 12/01/24 at 88,013 miles, battery was dead. ENGINE: Reported engine knocking and high idle 1/30/23 with 26,608 miles on vehicle. In service department until 03/03/03 with no issues found. Took vehicle to another dealership service department 06/06/23 with engine knocking and high idle, no issues found. Received back 06/12/23. Filmed the engine noises and high idle on 06/22/23, engine light came on and returned to service department at 37,265 miles. Engine was replaced after a lengthy wait time for replacement. Cam and Lifters were the issue in original engine. Received vehicle back 08/30/23. MODULES: Reported the display changing 1/30/23 with 26,608 miles, service documents state related to telematics controls. They replaced the module. Vehicle had a delay in shifting, reported on 06/06/23 with 36, 303 miles. Transmission...
On 3/21/2025 while in the middle lane of highway 290 my 2022 Yukon Denali xl started immediately decreasing in speed. The car went into neutral and I had no control of the acceleration or braking. Then the engine shut off. I wasn’t not able to get my car off of the freeway and had to wait over 1.5 hours to have it towed by GM. This is the second engine that has seized in the car. The car is still under warranty and had an extended warranty through gm as the engine seized and had to be replaced once already. Extremely dangerous
On [XXX] while driving my Yukon Denali XL it complexly shut off in the middle of [XXX] . I had my children with me and had to wait for almost an hour as police directed traffic around my vehicle until it could be towed. It just lost all abilities to accelerate, brake and steer. GM diagnosed that the engine seized and had to be replaced. this again happened on [XXX]. Gm has reported that the engine seized and has to be replaced again! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Engine Failure (Engine Seizure) (Connecting Rod bearing Failure). Enige Failed on an interstate highway causing us to nearly be struck by traffic moving at a high rate of speed. Also, Engine failed on an extremely cold (-17) degree Minnesota Night. This cause extreme concern/anxiety with children in the car as we waited for recovery. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by a GMC dealership in Hudson WI. Yes, the vehicle component has been inspected by both GMC certified technicians as well as 3rd party warranty technicians. Zero warning lamps or messages prior to the failure.
Engine failure while driving on highway due to lifter failure. Vehicle had to be towed home and then to dealer. No signs of failure prior to it happening. No check engine light or messages ever given, even after failure.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated while the vehicle was idling, there was an abnormal ticking sound coming from the engine. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH and exiting the highway, the abnormal sound turned into a screeching, grinding, and squealing sound, and the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had failed, and there were metal shavings in the oil. The dealer determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related to the failure was to NHTSA Action Number: PE25001 (Engine, Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,990.
The car all of a sudden started making wired noises during idling. While driving it would click and start shaking. Took it to a GM service center. They diagnosed as a flywheel. After investigating, it was not the fly wheel. They tore the motor apart as they though liftor 7 and 8 were bad. During that process, they found "large parts" of metal in the oil and found a rod barring failed. They are now replacing the entire engine.
1-'Engine Oil Low Add Oil' warning sign is being displayed. Vehicle is burning oil with no leakages. Warning sign has come on multiple times; authorized manufacture dealer service center finds no failure. Independent service center finds oil consumption to exist without leaks anywhere and beliefs this is due to a known engine failure in this model. 2-'Service Transmission Now Unable to Shift Soon' warning sign appears while driving but authorized manufacture dealer service center is unable to reproduce or determine issue.
I was driving my 3 children to a basketball tournament. I was going about 70 mph on the highway when my dash started flashing "Engine Oil Hot", a few seconds later my vehicle completely "shut off/died". I merged over to the shoulder of the highway and tried to restart my vehicle, yet it just "clicked" and seemed to be "dead". The safety of myself and my 3 children were at risk, being stranded on the side of the highway far from home waiting for the tow truck. To say I was scared is an understatement, there was no warning signs so I could prepare for this. My vehicle was towed into a dealership, later that week I received a call saying I will need a new engine. I was told this could take up to 1-4 months because so many other vehicles with the exact same failure are waiting for...
On [XXX] my vehicle displayed an engine light on the dash. The light went on and off randomly throughout the day. The vehicle was hooked up to a computer that said there were no issues and everything was fine. On [XXX] I drove the vehicle over 240 miles to Pittsburgh and back with no lights. At one point the vehicle did make a loud noise for the drive but I took it out of cruise control and everything was fine. On [XXX] while driving to Poconos, PA with my family (husband, self, children ages [XXX] , [XXX] , [XXX] and [XXX] ) on [XXX} at approximately mile marker [XXX] the vehicle's engine quit working. The engine light came on and we were able to coast off of a bridge and onto the shoulder of the highway. We were unable to exit the vehicle due to high rates of speed of...
While driving the vehicle shut down and never would restart. It was taken to a GMC dealer and currently on a waitlist for a new engine. The wait period I was given is approximately 4 months as I was told the engine is on back order.
I was 450 miles away from home. Travelling at 80 mph in the left lane of Interstate 35 when the Yukon stopped accelerating and started coasting. I looked at the gauge clusters on the dash and it said Press Start to Shift. I looked at the shifter and it had automatically moved from Drive to Neutral. It would not move back to Drive. I then pressed the Start button like it said on the dash and the whole vehicle shutoff while still at highway speed going 70mph and still coasting. I put hazards on and moved to the right sliding in-between two 18 wheelers who gave me space thankfully then I was able to get it to the shoulder. Once stopped I moved it into Park and pressed the Start button and the dash said "unsafe conditions unable to shift", or something like that. After 2 minutes of pressing the...
While driving on the highway the engine just shut off with no warning or other indication of problem. The dashboard computer instructed to restart the vehicle, which it would not restart. Managed to get to the side of the road. But the vehicle was unresponsive. After about an hour the lights in the rear of the vehicle flickered, so I attempted to re-start -which it did, and was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer (about 20 miles away). Where the car remains today. The incident occurred Feb 2. Took the dealer until 2/6 to advise me that the engine would need to be replaced. At that time they indicated they would need to car for about 2 weeks. I contacted them on 3/3 and they informed me they had no idea when they might be able to get the parts to replace the engine - there was a...
I had a 10 month old 2022 Yukon Denali XL. There was a constant smell of exhaust fumes inside the cabin. Took it into the dealership on multiple occasions and they found a leak in the exhaust system and supposedly fixed it. Less than 24hrs after getting it out of the shop, the engine seized up. Engine was replaced weeks later and within 7 days I started having transmission issue. GMC did absolutely nothing to keep my family of 8 safe.
Engine seized up from connecting rod bearing
Driving on the highway and the vehicle began making a strange noise. Went immediately to a dealership and they identified a bearing had come loose in the engine and the engine has to be completed replaced. Cost of almost $11k and the engine is on back order with no definite availability date. Vehicle was in excellent condition, all scheduled maintenance at the dealership. No issues until this. Approximately 80k miles m.
In July of 2023, my wife and kids were driving to San Diego from Phoenix. About 40 miles west of El Centro, CA, all the lights on the dash came on instructing her to pull over. When she pulled over and shut the car off, it would not come back on. Got towed back to a GM Dealership in El Centro. The diagnosed it with a bad radiator and failed engine. The replaced both(at roughly 30,000 miles). The car was fine for about six months and then it started getting battery drains again, which continually happened starting a few months after purchasing the vehicle. They never could figure this part out. Anyway, early January of 2025, while driving back to Phoenix from San Diego, the car did the same thing. This time, it restarted and she could continue on her way home. On [XXX], while driving in town, the same...
Traveling North bound on Highway 14 in Southern California on January 24, 2025. In the fast lane traveling approximately 70MPH when with no warning what so ever the vehicle shifted into neutral and lost power. Nearly rear ended trying to get out of traffic and to the right shoulder. Once stopped the vehicle would not start, stuck in Park, and could not turn the electronics off. Stuck in vehicle for 3 hours because it was too dangerous to exit vehicle. Tow truck arrived. Tried to jump the battery which by this time was dead. Had to drag the vehicle up the flatbed with wench do to vehicle unable to shift out of Park.
