I was driving down interstate and engine failed due to manufacturer malfunction Excessive Oil consumption Defect. I safely pulled off interstate to avoid injury to myself or others due to engine malfunction. There were not any pre warning lamps only post warning lamps.GM dealer determined catastrophic engine failure #2 cylinder misfire. Engine needs replaced.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the contact observed a rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced due to the PCV valve failure due to oil being forced into the manifold. Additionally, there were metal shavings throughout the engine. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
GM has long known about the oil consumption problem of the 2015 and settle a lawsuit for the 2013. Car issues including engine shutdowns and stalls, spark plug fouling, engine misfires, unexpected loss of power, vehicle “jerking”. Other people had the same issues included fires per blogs about the issues with the 2014-2015.
PCV valve failed causing the rear main seal to leak. Vehicle is available for inspection. The potential to be stranded in cold weather. While has been inspected by mechanic No warning lights
Exhaust manifold is leaking exhaust inside the car. It is extremely strong smelling and produces nausea. It is coming into the interior cabin from the engine compartment by way of the hvac/ventilation system. It is a daily occurrence. It was not noticeable when I purchased this car used in 2021, but has become increasingly noticable more and more each day/week/month. This is not occurring because of any incident or accident.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, upon coming to a complete stop, the vehicle briefly sputtered and nearly stalled before returning to normal functionality. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the intake camshaft actuator was stuck in the open position or had short-circuited in bank one. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 80,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the tire pressure monitor warning light and the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the thermostat, and head gasket needed to be replaced. Additionally, there were other mechanical issues with the front and rear brake pads, rotors, calipers, drive belt, and the lower control arms. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.
My car has been parked due to problems starting. I have had mechanics look at it and it is a timing chain issue or engine replacement issue. Oil has been a consistent problem with my car even though I routinely get oil changes and there are no leaks beneath the car. I have to keep oil and a funnel in my car to add as necessary. The console never indicates low oil.
EXCESSIVE Oil Consumption after 87,000 miles. Always had regular/up-to-date oil changes and took care of the vehicle. Had an oil change in June 2023 and in August (not may miles driven in that time frame), while driving I noticed the vehicle started to jerk...after arriving at work I checked under the hood and noticed there was NO OIL on the stick. I also added some antifreeze since I was there and it needed just a little. Purchased oil and filled it up. Two weeks later...again, no OIL on the stick. Less than 200 miles driven during this time. Now checking my oil every 3 days. October 2023, check engine light came on--took it to get checked and was told I was out of antifreeze. This was the only issue they could locate...no blown gaskets, etc. The AutoZone put antifreeze in to the level it should be and the next day...
Timing chain broke in 2020. Engine was replaced with a remanned engine with the approved upgraded timing chain. October 2023, upgraded timing chain broke again causing the need for a 2nd new engine with less than 75,000 miles on the remanned motor.
Vehicle began to lightly shake during idling and then over the course of a week, started making a loud noise. Appointment was made with shop and vehicle parked until time to take to shop. Timing chain/belt broke while driving and had to be towed into shop. Engine found to be completely ruined because it was 4 quarts low on oil after only 5600 miles. Vehicle was not leaking oil and it was determined that the engine burned through it. No warning lights, low oil sensors or any other indication that anything was wrong until the timing belt broke. Engine had to be completely replaced.
Excessive oil consumption caused engine failure
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the vehicle started jerking when the vehicle was started. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000.
Vehicle is stalling when stopping and starting to go. Service engine light came on had it it scanned, found it to be the camshaft position sensor. Called my local dealer as to find out if there is any recall on this, and they said that there is not. I believe there should be a recall on this part as is it is a safety issue, as stated the vehicle was stalling and you lose all power. When starting to pull out in traffic you will be left with no power as the engine stalls and you have to put the vehicle in neutral and restart it.
Crankshaft Position – Exhaust Camshaft Position Not Plausible
2015 Chevy Equinox DTC Error code P0411.SAI ports should be cleaned or replaced. Front sway bars malfunctioned and needs replaced. Please see if this is covered under warranty vehicle is only 8 years old only had it for 3 years.
My car runs hot (even with all of my fluids). If I drive "too far" (25-30 mins) driving over 55mph while it's hot outside, my check engine light comes on, all the gauges in my car start going back and forth. A couple different alarms will go off (Service All Wheel Drive System, Service StabiliTrak, Service Park Assist) . My engine revs and my car will start jerking. Sometimes my car won't even start back up right away. My car jerks going up hills. For close to two years my radio and back up camera stopped working, and out of nowhere it started working fine. My tires often lose air. My windshield wiper motor has gone out twice.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal sound coming from under the hood. The contact stated that the abnormal sound had become louder. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the timing chain had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
Engine Burning Oil at 97,000 miles No warning light
Took 2015 Equinox into Dealership due to call stalling - not dying. I made an appointment for a few days later. They gave a "fix", and said if it starts doing this again to bring it back in as this was their first guess at what it was. A couple months later it started stalling again. It was a Saturday, this time the stalling happened once and then died. I had it towed to the dealership and they said I had ran the car without oil. I had religiously had the oil changed and had never had low oil when I brought it in even for any oil change. The dealership quoted me $9,200 this time to "fix" it - by replacing the engine. The car has less than 90,000 miles on it.
Burning oil

Engine has been burning an excessive amount of oil for months. This has caused damage to pistons and cylinders and the repair costs keep adding up. Vehicle started making a ratlling noise when accelerating amd finally would not start. The mechanic estimated over $8,000 to replace the engine. The mechanic's inspection stated: "No oil on dipstick. When trying to start engine just cranks with occasional knocking noises. Engine failure likely". there was no indicator light or warning that the vehicle was low on oil. The oil was not due to be changed until May.
The timing chain jerks two teeth because of engine oil consumption. The chain guide was damaged. The engine light is on and indicates the reduction of power. The engine failure also causes the StabiliTrack light to be on.
Rear Main seal leak/timing chain which was repaired 5/21/2022.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated upon servicing the vehicle, the independent mechanic informed him that the rear main seal was leaking engine oil. The independent mechanic diagnosed that the failure was related to GMC Technical Service Bulletin Number: PIP5093C. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that he had to pay out-of-pocket for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there would be a follow-up regarding the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 101,000.
Engine has 100,000miles on it uses about 2 quarts of oil a week my wife drives 128 miles a day mon-friday. Eats oil like crazy, causes the timing chains to weaken and break and complete engine failure. Chains broke, and bent valves and cause major internal damage needs a engine the dealer quoted me $7,900. Wow GM come guys no low oil lights or warning systems. Also all these equinox’s burn oil to much. Maintenance done regularly and still fail. Chevrolet turned away any time of recall or help. Please help. NHTSA!
My engine is damaged beyond repair. I was driving to work and started to hear a clicking or tapping sound coming from my engine so I called the dealership to make an appt for my car. When I was almost to work (which is an hr commute) my car shut off!! While I was MOVING IN TRAFFIC!!! No warning lights or sounds. I had to push myself off the road with no assistance. Thank goodness I didnt get into a wreck! When the dealership looked at it they said my engine consumed oil and it damaged the pistons and valves. After doing some research, there was a recall for my car's engine to have the piston rings redone bc of excessive oil consumption. My car was not in that recall, but my engine was. I also found that there is a class action against GM about my cars engine and...
Issues with Excessive Oil Consumption timing chain Failure
VEHICLE DIED WHILE SITTING AT SIGNAL. WOULD NOT RE-START. TWO MEN HELPED ME GET VEHICLE OFF HIGHWAY AND INTO CONVENIENCE STORE PARKING LOT. TOW TRUCK WAS CALLED. A MECHANIC AND THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER BOTH STATED THAT THESE ENGINES HAVE OIL FAILURES. NOT GOOD ENGINES. SAFETY WAS HINDERED BY NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE VEHICLE WITHOUT OTHERS HELP. VEHICLE IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR OTHER SYMPTOMS PRIOR TO FAILURE. PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN REPRODUCED AS VEHICLE BATTERY WAS DRAINED AND VEHICLE WILL NOT START.
While driving to work, -7 was the temp, noticed an oil smell coming from the vents. At this point car is still running normal. When leaving work received the following information: sevice stabilitrac, reduced engine power, and low oil pressure shit off engine. I shut the car off and checked the oil. There was no oil in the engine, 2 quarts added and off i went. The car was driving like it always has, no issue. Later in the evening drove it again. The same three messages popped up, only this time i was in motion. Immediately stopped added 2 more quarts of oil which went staight on the pavement. Car was towed home, then towed to the repair shop the next day. First repair is the starter, it's full of oil and they cannot find the leak until it starts. The cost $433.81, later i receive a call they...
The engine is burning excessive amounts of oil at 120,000 miles. GM should take responsibility for this defect and fix the problem. Never ever buying one again.
My SUV uses a lot of oil. I'm not sure where it is going. Also my brakes squeal something awful. ever since I had the car.And it stalls most everytime I stop at red lights or when I park. My check engine light is on all of the time. It simply will not operate at those low speeds. The engine starts to lag and idle really bad. I ran the codes and it said it was the camshaft positioning sensor. I've owned the SUV for 18 months. I don't know what the lemon laws are where I live, but I believe it's a total lemon.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, he noticed a massive oil leak underneath the vehicle. Upon inspection, the contact noticed an oil seal leak. No warning lights were illuminated prior to the failure. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 107,000.
Engine failed as a result of a constant oil leak. My and others safety was put at risk because the engine died while I was traveling on the road. The problem has been confirmed by an independent service center. There was no warning lamps or messages.
Do to excessive oil consumption and cold weather the engine is done and has to be replaced.
PCV system freezing and plugging resulting in increased pressure causing excessive oil leak and potential engine failure. Pulled oil dipstick and release excessive pressure, however icing and freezing within the system continues to occur.
Car all the sudden died while driving and wouldnt start back up. Took it to my mechanic to find out it was very low on oil and timing chain slipped. Both oil consumption and timing chains are common issues in this car. No indication of low oil on the dash and had just added oil the week before. Also had to fix the rear main seal awhile back which caused my car to just stop while driving which is also a common issue due to the design of the pcv.
my 2015 Chevrolet equinox 2.4l ecotec AWD vehicle with 102k miles had a massive oil leak in jan.2022, when it was -22 deg. f outside. The car was at work outside, and my drive home was about 7 miles. When I got home, I decided to check the oil on the dipstick and it was empty. The whole underside of the chasis was oil splattered. I added 3 quarts of oil and started the car up and oil was poring out of the rear main seal. I trailered it to a chevrolet dealer, and they said the pvc frozen up. The engine and subframe will need to come out. This was an expensive repair. This vehicle does burn oil. It does not leak oil thou. The engine oil light never came on during the ride home. I am glad I checked the oil, because the engine would have quit running on...
My 2015 Equinox started having issues over the summer. In July it had a stuttered drive to it, a lot of little hiccups in the ride. I took it in and was told the oil was bone dry despite having changed it a few months prior. I had the oil changed, and then 2,001 miles later the car died entirely, which was roughly two months after that oil change. Once again, they told me the oil was bone dry. I was told that the car had excessive oil consumption and it had essentially killed the engine. I contacted GM and they acted like they had no reports of this problem, even though a simple google search yields an impressive amount of excessive oil consumption complaints that lead to engine failure around the mileage I'm at. (111,000 miles, just paid it off a month prior too.)
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that a month after having an oil change performed on the vehicle, he noticed that the engine had consumed 2 quarts of oil. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that he had been adding a quart of oil every1,000 - 2,000 miles. The dealer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the manufacturer for assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Engine system making noise, the vehicle did not sound right, but no warning lights. I took vehicle in for oil service, told it was not time for an oil change even though 50% of the oil was consumed with only about 600 miles driven (last service 89275 mi, now 89889 mi). Service center topped off my oil but warned the system is burning more oil than it should with no signs of a leak.
It's has oil consumption problem issuse because the added 3 quarts of oil and it still wouldn't show on the dipstick
High engine oil consumption, timing chain system failure resulting g in catastrophic engine failure.
Vehicle excessively burns oil.
Car won't start put in new camshaft timing solenoids and won't start. Defective engine
the timing chain went bad and had to be replaced before the break pads. Chevrolet wanted twice as much to repair as my mechanic did, and he used OEM parts and he replaced a few other things that *might* go out, since the entire engine had to be removed.
You must be aware of the problems that the 2.4 ECO-TEC engine has in relation to oil consumption and clogged PCV valve in cold weather. When the valve freezes it results in oil loss and engine failure which puts the driver and passengers in a very dangerous situation. I had to rebuild my motor for $3100 and I had to replace the valve 4 different times. Its all about the money and how much GM would have to pay to make this problem right. Instead the NHTSA turns a blind eye to the dangerous problem and instead investigates on why some wiper blades don't work. Do some real investigation by first Equinox oil consumption problems and read some real accounts of owners being put in dangerous situations.
The Ecotec 2.4L engine installed within this vehicle has been, at an increasing rate, burning oil. At the vehicles most recent change, it burned 2 quarts of oil, which is the most it has ever burned. I'm also concerned that the low oil pressure sensor warning did not come, since it was 2 quarts low on oil. Over the past 50,000 miles, about, the vehicle averaged burning about 1 to 1.5 quarts of oil. I believe there is something systemically wrong with this vehicles Ecotec 2.4L engine that is causes it to burn oil.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle consumed an excessive amount of engine oil. Additionally, there were rattling sounds coming from the vehicle, which alerted the contact that the engine oil level was low. The contact added a quart to two quarts of oil to the engine. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was a high-performance vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000. The VIN was unavailable.
