Consumer Description
I purchased this car in September 2020 from a dealership and had no knowledge that there was an open recall on the vehicle. My son was driving the car home from school when in what he describes as the car losing all power with a rumbling noise. Smoke began coming from under the hood. He immediately pulled over. He was at a red light and had reached about 35 mph when the engine failed. He immediately pulled over about 200 to 300 feet from where he was had accelerated from at the red light. The vehicle was towed to the Hyundai dealership. After inspection it was reported that the open recall campaign was addressed on the vehicle however the damage caused by the recall was not fixed by the dealership. The dealership gave a quote of $9100 to replace the engine which through a rod through the engine block, a new starter, a new intake manifold and a new turbo. The dealership advised that they would only address the computer software update to address the pre ignition issue that leads to engine failure or fire but would not fix the damage caused by the recall. This is very unfortunate that automakers can build cars that they issue recalls on and only be responsible for fixing the recall and not the damage caused due to the recall. I should have never been sold a car with an open recall that was not addressed before purchase. My sons life was put at risk as well as other motorist. He broke down on an extremely busy highway. Highway 501 in Conway South Carolina. The car began smoking and could have caught fire. I am floored that a country like ours does not place more accountability on automakers and dealerships.
