Recall 07V147000 — VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES

Defect: ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, WHEN EQUIPPED WITH A WINDSHIELD, THE THROTTLE CABLES CAN KINK AT THE GUIDE BRACKET LOCATED AT THE STEERING HEAD WHEN THE HANDLEBAR IS TURNED ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT. IN THIS POSITION, A KINKED CABLE CAN CAUSE EITHER A STICKLY THROTTLE FEELING OR PREVENT THE THROTTLE FROM RETURNING TO THE CLOSED POSITION.

Consequence: IF THE RIDER TURNS THE HANDLEBAR TO THE FULL LEFT LOCK DURING A SLOW-SPEED MANEUVER, THIS STICKY/BINDING THROTTLE FEELING COULD RESULT IN REDUCED VEHICLE CONTROL, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE GUIDE BRACKET WITH A NEW ONE THAT HAS AN ADDITIONAL GUIDE TO PREVENT THE THROTTLE CABLES FROM KINKING. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 19, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT YAMAHA AT 1-800-962-7926.

I AM GETTING A LOUD CLACKING AND WHINE FROM THE TRANSMISSION IN 3RD GEAR. THIS IS THE ONLY GEAR THAT IS DOING IT AND IT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS COMING APART! I AM AFRAID TO RIDE IT VERY FAR BECAUSE IT MIGHT BRAKE AND LOCK UP MY DRIVE TRAIN WHEN I AM AT SPEED ON THE INTERSTATE AND IT CAUSE ME TO CRASH! THIS HAPPENS WHEN I AM GOING THROUGH THE GEARS, 1ST TO 2ND THEN TO 3RD AND ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE. IF I GO ON TO 4TH GEAR IT STOPS AND THE SAME WITH 5TH GEAR. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IF THIS GEAR BREAKS WHILE I AM RIDING, TO BE PREPARED FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO COMPLETELY LOCK UP AND IT MOST LIKELY WILL PUT ME DOWN AND MAKE ME CRASH. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON NOW FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND THERE IS ONLY 40K ON THIS BIKE AND NO REASON THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD BE GOING OUT. I HAVE BEEN RIDING MOTORCYCLES FOR 50YRS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM!

I BEGAN TO NOTICE A WHINING FROM THE TRANSMISSION IN THIRD GEAR. MINOR AT FIRST BUT HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY LOUDER OVER THE LAST MONTH. LOOKED THE PROBLEM UP ON SEVERAL YAMAHA ROADLINER / STRATOLINER FORUMS AND FOUND OUT THAT MANY OTHERS ARE HAVING THE SAME AND WORSE PROBLEMS INCLUDING LOOSING THIRD GEAR. I HAVE READ THAT SOME HAVE TRIED TO GET YAMAHA TO RECALL THESE BUT NO RECALL TO DATE AS OF YET. I WILL HAVE TO STOP RIDING MY BIKE AS I DON'T WANT TO LOOSE THIRD OUT ON A TRIP. I HAVE ALSO RED THAT YAMAHA HAS COME UP WITH A REPLACEMENT GEAR THAT SOLVES THE PROBLEM BUT AS OF NOW BIG MONEY IS REQUIRED TO REPAIR THIS DESIGN FLAW. *TR

WHILE RIDING MY 2006 YAMAHA ROADLINER 1900,I NOTICED A KNOCK IN THIRD GEAR AS I WAS GOING SLOW. NEXT RIDE IT GOT LOUDER,AND A WHINING STARTED COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION MAINTENANCE WAS PERFORMED CORRECTLY SINCE I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW. THE KNOCK IS SO BAD I CAN'T RIDE IT, I HAVE HEARD OF MANY OTHERS WITH THIS PROBLEM, AT OR AROUND 20,000 MILES, MINE HAS 21,256.I HAVE CONTACTED YAMAHA FOR HELP, AND THEY SAID THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT SINCE ITS OUT OF WARRANTY .
