DT: WHILE DRIVING CONSUMER NOTICED EVERY TIME TOOK FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND CAR STALLED. THE CAR WOULD SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY SOMETIMES. THERE WAS STILL ELECTRICAL POWER IN THE CAR. THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES WHEN IT STALLED. THE CAR WOULD START BACK UP RIGHT AWAY. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THERE WAS A CODE SHOWING WHEN THE CAR STARTED. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHO ADVISED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE AIR MASS SENSOR. THIS SENSOR WAS REPLACED. ON APRIL 18 2004 WHILE OWNER'S WIFE WAS TRAVELING AND TRYING TO PASS SOMEONE THE CAR SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. THERE WAS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THAT SAID SOMETHING LIKE "CHECK ENGINE EMERGENCY." THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES. THEN THE WIFE HAD JUST ENOUGH POWER TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND A TOW TRUCK BROUGHT THE CAR...
DT: CALLER SAW VOLVO INVESTIGATION ON TV. CALLER HAD THE PROBLEM FIXED TWICE, ONCE IN DECEMBER 2004 AND ONCE IN JUNE. REPLACED MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. *AK *JB
MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR ON MY 2000 VOLVO S-80 FAILED AS I WAS ABOUT TO PASS ANOTHER CAR. ABORTED PASSING ATTEMPT AND WENT BACK BEHIND OTHER CAR. THIS WAS THE THIRD TIME MAF FAILED AND THEREFORE I HAD THIS ONE REPLACED, YET AGAIN. ONCE STOPPED CAR WAS UNDRIVABLE; AGAIN: THIRD TIME THIS HAPPENED. I AM ON MY THIRD MAF.*AK

ENGINE AND CAR COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN ON 2 OCCASIONS (4/13/01 AND 7/27/01). MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR REPLACED INITIAL INSTANCE AND SOFTWARE UPDAED. IGNITION ND FUEL INJECTION FAULT TRACING. UNABLE TO ISOLATE CAUSE SECOND INSTANCE. INTERMITTENT COMMUNICATION FAULT AT ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. UNABLE TO DUPLICATE PROBLEM. REFUSE PICK-UP OF THE CAR AT ROYAL VOLVO SINCE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY ISSUES. HAVE NOTIFIED VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICES TWICE, VOLVO DEALERSHIP, NHTSA, OFFICE OF ATTORNEY GENERAL. THOROUGH LETTER BEING SENT TO NHTSA, CENTER FOR AUTO SAFETY, AND OFFICE OF ATTORNEY GENERAL ON 8/6/01. PLEASE THOROUGHLY REVIEW THE CONTENT. MAJOR CONCERNS----HAVE FOUND AT LEAST 6 OTHER INSTANCES OF THE SAME PROBLEM. WILL SEND ALL DOCUMENTATION IN THE EXPRESS LETTER BEING SENT. CALL IF ANY QUESTIONS AND LEAVE AN 800 NUMBER FOR RESPONSES.
