A warning message saying "Warning Notification A warning light was turned on. Would you like to call an operator?". Diagnostic performed by Yark Toyota confirmed coolant bypass valve malfunction which can cause overheating. Warning comes on when I turn on the A/C. I now have no air conditioning in the hottest summer I can remember. Repair costs just under $1,000 total.

Recurring engine maintenance required alert due to a Heater coolant bypass valve fail issue at 58,100.
#11603730 |
I got a message popup saying "Engine Maintenance Required" which is different from the oil change reminder. I cleared it thinking it was about an oil change (that isn't due yet), and it came right back. I took it to a mechanic who ran diagnostics and wasn't able to find the issue. After a few internet searches, I found that the coolant bypass valve is a known issue on certain years of this vehicle. I followed the suggested steps for resetting it (to turn on the vehicle with the heater on, then lower the AC temp without hitting the lowest temperature setting). It's currently working as a fix, but I'm concerned about any long-term situations that could arise.

Premature Coolant bypass hose failure at 120k Very common according to online forums $1000 cost of repair

Coolant bypass value failure. 2020 with 32751 miles. There are many of this failures reported on-line. Example: [XXX] At the dealer, the service manager relayed that a mechanic stated they've replaced several of these and it should be a recall. Cost was $520 and not covered by warranty. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

We replaced the original battery on May 27, 2024. A few weeks later, on June 15, 2024, an "Engine Maintenance Required" message appeared on the display screen. A local mechanic diagnosed the code and stated that the oil level was low so we added one quarter of motor oil. We also called the dealership, which stated that this code generally indicates a coolant bypass valve malfunction. We topped off the coolant fluid but the "Engine Maintenance Required" message still appeared (we were not able to clear it). A few days later, we took the vehicle to another mechanic, who informed us that the coolant bypass valve was broken and needed to be replaced. Given the 95-degree temperatures, we felt that we had no choice but to replace the broken valve because we did not want the engine to overheat. So we paid $570.28 for the mechanic to replace the coolant...

Bypass coolant valve needed to be replaced after engine maintenance required warning came on
#11601326 |
Coolant bypass valve needs to be replaced. Car under 60k miles and should be covered on the powertrain warranty but is being required to be repaired out of pocket otherwise will ruin engine
#11600587 |
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the "Engine Maintenance Required" message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the coolant bypass control value needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.

I currently own a 2020 Toyota Rav 4. About two weeks ago I got a notification on my car saying "Engine Maintenance Required" i had taken my car to Toyota wondering what the problem was. They informed me it it the coolant bypass valve without hesitation. This is going to cost me more money than I want to spend. To make the situation better the parts needed are on back order for almost two weeks. The fact this is a common problem right now and there is no Recall is unacceptable. You are causing thousands of customers to spend an unnecessary amount of money and wait weeks just to get the correct parts to fix the situation. There is currently a lawsuit against Toyota because of this issue. There needs to be a recall immediately.

Engine Maintenance Required indicator turned on at around 42K miles. My oil change was not due until 45K miles. I had my oil changed at around 43K miles and the indicator still remained on. Issue was the coolant bypass valve need to be replaced. Many other Rav4 owners have had the same issue. The faulty coolant bypass valve if failed while driving could of caused my car to overheat and possibly catch on fire depending on how sever the overheating is while I'm driving.
#11596153 |
Engine maintenance required warning on dash that prevents me from seeing any dashboard information. It is not possible to turn off the warning. Dealership say it is due to faulty coolant bypass valve. There is a class action lawsuit regarding this part failing.
#11595659 |
A message light is shown stating "Engine Maintenance Required. Visit your dealer." Upon inspection from the dealer, it is a problem with the coolant bypass valve. The service men expressed concern for the heat regulation of the engine and things related to the coolant. This seems to be an extremely common problem with other Toyota RAV4s after looking it up online. Given the extent of the issue, this seems warranted to issue a recall for this part.
#11595723 |
Coolant Flow Valve failure at 89,000 miles. It was replaced at Toyota dealership so the faulty valve is not available. My safety was compromised by an impossible to delete dashboard message which obscured the speedometer. The only way to delete the message was to have Toyota dealership fix part and clear code. Other safety concerns would be further engine damage if this part, which is known to be extremely prone to failure, is not repaired. This Coolant Flow Valve failure was indeed confirmed by the Toyota Dealership who also stated it is a very common issue with these 2020 RAV4 models. After completion of the repair the Toyota Dealership did complete a passing inspection of my RAV4 vehicle. The aforementioned warning on the dash appeared around 89,000 miles, no prior problems or symptoms noted.

I got the "Engine maintenance required. Visit your dealer" warning. (conveniently after my scheduled oil change 1 week later) My vehicle is a 2020 Rav4. I purchased it 2022. It has UNDER 30k miles. I have researched this warning and found it to be very common. And the price to fix it upwards of $900 ??!! I was even quoted this when I called my dealer. I have found threads going back 1 to 2 years stating this repair. No warranty, no recall. as I said I have UNDER 30k miles too.
#11593515 |
Engine coolant valve failed. Known Toyota issue for this model and no recall has been issued.
#11590766 |
1. I had to have Injector Fuel Service due to my vehicle having a sluggish feeling while driving from Stop to Start. The vehicle also had a throttling motion while driving. 2. A message appeared on dashboard after a recent visit to the dealership after normal maintenance service, “Engine Maintenance Required” “Reach out to Dealer.” This message specifically shows while I start up my vehicle and will not disappear if cancelled. “This is a warning for a coolant bypass valve failure”
#11590051 |
The vehicle start showing the ( Engine maintenance required) message around 40k miles. The bypass coolant valve needs to be replaced. The dealership did confirm the issue. The issue will result in the engine overheating or seizure. A lot of people who own RAV4 2019-2024 had the same issue.
#11590086 |
Engine maintenance required, contact dealer Alert displaying to replace coolant bypass valve. Vehicle has 38,144 miles. Internet search of this issue has been reported by several consumers with vehicles less then 4 years old. Not covered under warranty and quoted at $700- ridiculous!

Engine maintenance light comes on this is not the maintenance light this morning light is not in the owner's manual I had to Google the problem to find out the answer it is a faulty coolant bypass valve my car has 47,000 miles other people have reported the same issue Toyota won't acknowledge and won't fix the problem there are complaints from many other people about this
#11588981 |
engine maintenance required light, after much research it shows it is a common defect in 2019-2022 models. Coolant Bypass Valve malfunction or failure. This can lead to overheating/fire. Appeared at 70k, all maintenance done by certified toyota dealership
#11588156 |
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that the "Engine Maintenance Required to Visit Your Dealer" message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where a diagnostic was performed. The contact was informed that the coolant bypass valve was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure; the contact was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 26,643.

“Engine Maintenance Required” appeared on the screen and immediately took the vehicle to my local dealership. Dealer claims “Engine coolant bypass valve” Has malfunctioned and needs to be replaced. They are charging $697.54 for the repair. After a little research online including nhtsa.gov this seems to be an extremely common issue and needs to be recalled.
#11587424 |
2020 rav4 coolant bypass valve problem. This is an issue that is been happening in the 2019 and 2020 models even with less than 55,000 miles on it. My vehicle milage is 52,000 and now I'm having this problem and the dealer is charging $700.00 to fix the issue. I thought that Toyota vehicles were reliable but this is ridiculous.

I just bought my 2020 RAV4 in November with the lifetime powertrain warranty. By April, I had a “Engine Maintenance Required” light that would not go away. I took it to the dealership and it was my coolant bypass valve. $800 later, it’s fixed. Not covered under any warranty. Very common issue that Toyota charges a lot to fix.
#11586570 |
My 2020 Toyota Rav4 was just diagnosed with an engine coolant bypass valve failure. The leak from this valve could cause engine overheating. This seems to be a well known defective engine component that Toyota appears unwilling to address.
#11586081 |
Engine maintenance required. Found that coolant bypass valve has malfunctioned. Warranty will not cover due to being over 30k miles.
#11586169 |
Coolant bypass valve is faulty, coolant leaks into sensor. Coolant regulation is important for maintaining proper engine temperature and failure with this system can lead to larger engine issues, possibly leading to catastrophic engine failure. Problem verified by independent mechanic and dealer. Issue was inspected by dealer. The message “Engine Maintenance Required // Visit Your Dealer” displays on dash.

1. The coolant bypass valve failed. I had to pay about $950 to get it fixed because it is a safety issue and was not covered under any warranties. 2. Yes they were. The coolant bypass valve is responsible for maintaining optimal engine temperature. With this part broken it, the engine can overheat as the coolant will not circulate through the radiator. 3. Yes. The toyota dealership informed us they see an unreal amount of people with faulty coolant bypass valves. It is an issue with the part. 4. It was inspected by the Toyota dealership in Round Rock. 5. No there was nothing to indicate an issue. I only discovered the problem because I got a "engine maintenance required" warning on my dash.

A week prior to this incident, the 2020 RAV4 was taken to Toyota for its maintenance check where everything was checked, replaced and changed. However, the last two days an incessant message keeps popping up on the dash stating “engine maintenance required… Visit your dealer” taking up the entirety of the middle screen inhibiting my ability from seeing my speed, mileage, distance to empty , time, lane assist and other car information that I normally rely on. I have pressed the “arrow back” or “back” button numerous times but three seconds later the message pops again inhibiting me from being able to use necessary car controls to stay safe. The engine on the 2020 RAV4 needs to be recalled as my car only has 55,000 miles on it. I have talked to numerous professionals within the motor industry in which they state these engines have lower stability and life expectancy...
#11578493 |
I kept getting an engine maintenance message. The coolant bypass assembly failed.
#11577922 |
Code P268115... Every time you start the vehicle a message will display a "Engine Maintenance Required" and it will never go away, I was driving off road and the message would get in the way of seeing how my AWD is performing.
#11577763 |
I having the engine maintenance like tons of other people and it seems is a 800$ fix..... to many people having the same issue and it seems is the return valve hose for everyone
#11577366 |
Check engine warning came on, dealer immediately knew it was coolant bypass valve since this is a very common incident with Rav4s recently. My valve was defective and leaking coolant so I had to get it replaced.
#11577063 |
The engine coolant bypass valve has shorted and needs to be replaced. The dealer has confirmed the issue. First noticed when a message on the dash that said to see the dealer for an engine issue
#11575924 |
p/a engine coolant bypass valve and coolant, and connector with pigtail, pins are full of corrosion inside connector. Items need to be replaced
#11574425 |
Coolant bypass valve on all newer 2019 and up Rav4 models are known to cause issues or break at early mileage usually before 50k miles. It’s a known problem with Rav4 owners and is backed by many claims on social media websites and internet forums. The cost for diagnostic of “engine maintenance required” message on cars dash can range up to $150 and up for diagnostic fees only at Toyota Dealerships. Other independent mechanics cannot diagnose the problem message. Repair and replacement of $800 for parts and labor is ridiculous.
#11573392 |
There seems to be a lot of folks online wanting a resolution from Toyota regarding a Coolant Bypass Valve that fails around 30k-60k miles on their 2020 Toyota Rav4's and other models. My Rav 4 just recently had the Engine Maintenance Required pop up on mine & I'm between 30k-40k. Some people had their issue a couple years ago and still nothing has been done about it. Toyota is charging close to $1000 for total repairs with labor for most of these instances. The community wants & needs a recall.

My vehicle that's only 4 years old stopped moving forward or backwards when putting the car in gear. The car turns on perfectly fine never gave us a warning or driving issues until the day it stopped moving on a highway. I got the vehicle towed to Avondale Toyota in Arizona and they told me not a single professional technician was able to find anything wrong with the transmission. I think to myself "not one of these professionals can find an issue with a car that's 4 years old? That's odd to me. But they advised me they could fix the vehicle with a brand new transmission for $8,000 but that's my only option at this point. I live paycheck to paycheck and this isn't something that could have happened to me at a worst time expecting a child in the summer. Im hoping it could be just a solinod...

The coolant bypass valve failed on my RAV4 at 67,757 miles. There are multiple similar complaints online and I would like to bring it to the attention to the NHTSA. The engine service light cut on and the dealership replaced the valve to make it go away.
