I BELIEVE, THE ENGINE LIGHT PROBLEM WAS THERE SINCE I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE AFTER DRIVING COUPLE OF MONTHS (1000-1500 MILES) THE LIGHT APPEARED. IN 2008 I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP BILL KAY AT DOWNERS GROVE IL PAID APPROX. $2,000 FOR FIXING THE PROBLEM BUT AFTER SOME TIME IT AGAIN CAME UP AND STARTED FLASHING. IN 2010 AGAIN I TOOK IT TO MAINEKE AUTO WORK SHOP AND GOT THE IGNITION COILS CHANGED, SILENCER/EXHAUST CHANGED AND PAID ALMOST $1,200 BUT AGAIN THE SAME PROBLEM OF ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK. THE PROBLOM GOES ON AND ON, RECENTLY I GOT THE NEW BATTERY AND TOOK IT TO THE GERALD NISSAN AT OGDEN AVE. NAPERVILLE, IL THEY SAID THEY CHANGED THE COILS BUT LIGHT CAME BACK THE VERY NEXT DAY. 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA'S HAVE A SERIOUS ENGINE IGNITION COIL DEFECT. -- THIS DEFECT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO RUN ROUGH, STALL AND ABRUPTLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY STOP DURING NORMAL USE. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT WAS LITTLE (IF ANY) VALUE IN HELPING ALERT THE DRIVER TO THE SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE. THE ENGINE HAS 6 SEPARATE COILS. THE FIRST COIL FAILED AND WAS REPLACED BY THE NISSAN DEALER. IT WAS NOT COVERED BY ANY TYPE OF NISSAN WARRANTY. WITHIN A 90 DAY PERIOD, TWO ADDITIONAL COILS FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. EVENTUALLY, ALL 6 IGNITION COILS ULTIMATELY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $900.00. THIS PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED ON MY VEHICLE LAST YEAR CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO OVERHEAT UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. UPON TAKING IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS A KNOWN MANUFACTURING PROBLEM AND MANY HARNESSES HAVE BEEN REPLACED, BUT AT THE COST OF THE CONSUMER RANGING FROM $1,500-3,000 (DEPENDING ON THE DEALERSHIP). THE VEHICLE WAS LESS THAN THREE YEARS OLD BUT HAD 37,500 MILES. THESE COILS ARE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND ARE AFFECTED BY AGE AND/OR DESIGN AND NOT BY MILES DRIVEN.
