Extreme Gas Odor after filling gas tank and during time of driving.
DRIVER IS EXPERIENCING A HEAVY ODOR OF GASOLINE AFTER FILL UP. VEHICLE IS NOT OVERFILLED/TOPPED OFF. VEHICLE WAS SITTING INSIDE GARAGE WHEN OWNER NOTICED A HEAVY FUEL ODOR AND NOTIFIED FIRE DEPARTMENT TO INVESTIGATE. PER RECOMMENDATIONS OF FIRE DEPARTMENT, KEEP VEHICLE OUT OF GARAGE UNTIL ISSUE COULD BE INSPECTED BY A QUALIFIED MECHANIC. MECHANIC INSPECTED FUEL SYSTEM AND FOUND FUEL LEAK UNDER REAR SEATS NEAR FUEL PUMP/SENDING UNIT. MERCEDES BENZ REFUSES REPAIR ISSUE SAYING IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. GASOLINE FUMES/VAPORS ARE ESPECIALLY HEAVY INSIDE A SINGLE CAR GARAGE, AND IF A IGNITION SOURCE IS INTRODUCED IT COULD BECOME FATAL.
I FILLED THE GAS TANK FULL AND ON PULLING IN THE GARAGE COULD SMELL A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE... WENT TO GET MY OIL CHANGE THE NEXT DAY AND THE GENTLEMAN MENTIONED HE COULD SMELL GAS COMING FROM MY CAR AT VALVOLINE OIL CHANGE.... VERY STRONG SMELL IN THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR AS WELL AS WHEN WALKING AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR YOU COULD SMELL A STRONG SMELL OF GAS... THE GENTLEMAN FROM VALVOLINE LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND SAID THERE'S SOME TYPE OF COVER THAT GOES UNDERNEATH THE GAS TANK ITSELF AND PUT HIS FINGER INTO IT AND COULD TOUCH GASOLINE ON HIS HAND... I JUST WENT ONTO THE INTERNET AND READ MANY MANY COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME THING WITH THIS TYPE OF CAR LAWSUITS HAVE BEEN FILED... IN THOSE COMPLAINTS THE PEOPLE THAT BROUGHT THEIR CAR TO DEALERSHIP SAID THAT IT WAS VERY EXPENSIVE TO REMEDY...
HEAVY FUEL ODOR EMANATING FROM VEHICLE. VEHICLE AND POSSIBLY STRUCTURES COULD CATCH FIRE IF FUEL IS LEAKING AND AN IGNITION SOURCE IS INTRODUCED. ONLY VIABLE REASON WHY FUEL ODOR IS PRESENT IS EITHER THE FUEL TANK IS LEAKING AT A LOCATION OR THE VENT HAS FAILED. VEHICLE FUEL ODOR IS ESPECIALLY STRONG IF VEHICLE WAS FILLED UP RECENTLY BUT IS PRESENT 24/7.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE AMERICAN SERVICE CENTER DEALER (703-284-2500, LOCATED AT 624 S GLEBE RD, ARLINGTON, VA 22204) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A CANISTER VALVE AND PURGE VALVE SHUT OFF AND CAUSED FUEL TO LEAK IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. TECHNICIAN ADVISED THAT THE VALVES AND THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA13003 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 140,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

MERCEDES-BENZ OF FAIRFIELD (165 COMMERCE DRIVE, FAIRFIELD, CT 06825) STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK SEAL MAY BE FAULTY. THE CONTACT PURCHASED A FUEL TANK SEAL AND HAD IT INSTALLED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.
FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THERE HAS BEEN A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE AFTER FUELING THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR HAS BECOME STEADILY WORSE AND WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR ASSISTANCE. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS CRACKED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. WHEN I INQUIRED HOW THIS COULD HAVE OCCURRED, I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE DUE TO IMPACT OR TRAUMA (WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE AS THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY INCIDENT). WAS INFORMED THAT IT WOULD COST $2,300.00 TO REPAIR VEHICLE. CALLED MB-USA AND ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE. WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOT A RECALL ON THE FUEL TANK AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE COST. AS THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE, I HAD THE WORK PERFORMED AND RECEIVED A 10% "GOODWILL" DISCOUNT. PICKED UP VEHICLE AND DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE AND CONTINUED TO SMELL FUEL. CALLED DEALERSHIP AND THEY CAME TO PICK-UP. ACKNOWLEDGED THAT...

WHILE PARKED, ENGINE WOULD DIE IMMEDIATELY AFTER I STARTED IT. MECHANIC DISCOVERED FUEL SEEPING OUT OF TOP OF FUEL SENDING UNIT IN FUEL TANK.
AFTER FILLED UP THE CAR WITH GAS. STRONG GAS ODOR AND GAS LEAKING FROM DRIVERS SIDE REAR OF CAR. WHILE DRIVING AND WHILE PARKED IN THE GARAGE EXTREMELY UNSAFE!!!
THER IS A STRONG GAS SMELL INSIDE CAR WHEN THE TANK IS OVER 3/4 FULL. DANGEROUS FIRE HARZARD. THINK THAT IT IS A RECALL ISSUE.

CUSTOMER COMPLAINS OF FUEL SMELL OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE ON APPROACH. UPON ENTERING THE VEHICLE THE SMELL IS UNBEARABLE AND CAUSES NAUSEA WHEN DRIVING. INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THE LEFT SIDE (DRIVER'S) FUEL PUMP SEAL IS LEAKING CAUSING FUEL TO PUDDLE AND SATURATE INSPECTION PLATE. THE FUEL WICKS PAST INSPECTION PLATE GASKET AND INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT SATURATING THE AREA DIRECTLY UNDER THE REAR SEAT. REPLACED FUEL PUMP MODULE WITH SEAL (GASKET) AS WELL AS GASKET ON RIGHT (PASSENGER) SIDE. *TR

WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FILLED OVER 75% THERE IS A STRONG FUEL SMELL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. IF I FILL LESS THAN 75% THERE IS NO PROBLEM. I HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH FUEL LEVELS FROM FULL ( NOT TOPPING OFF ) DOWN TO THE 75% AND WILL HAVE THE FUEL SMELL. THE SMELL WILL CEASE WHENEVER THE LEVEL DROPS BELOW THE 75%. LEAK IS COMING FROM FUEL PUMP SEAL / GAS TANK. CALLED MULTIPLE DEALERS AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THIS IS COMMON PROBLEM. *TR
ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 23, 2014, I TOOK MY 2004 E320 SEDAN TO SCHUMACHER MERCEDES BENZ IN SCOTTSDALE ARIZONA. I ASKED THEM TO CHECK OUT A 'CHECK ENGINE' LIGHT AND INFORMED THEM THAT THERE WAS AN OCCASIONAL STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE. ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 24, 2014, THE DEALERSHIP CALLED TO INFORM ME THAT THE GAS TANK AND SENSORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF A LEAK. MY SERVICE COORDINATOR ALSO TOLD ME THAT IT IS A COMMON / KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE MAKE AND MODEL OF MY VEHICLE. THE COST TO REPAIR IT WOULD BE $4000 + I CONTACTED THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND LEARNED THAT THERE IS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION AND A COMPLAINT OPENED MARCH 15, 2013 ,,, HOWEVER THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL ISSUED AS OF THIS TIME. THE CAR HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. ON OCTOBER 24TH, I TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP WHO WORKS EXCLUSIVELY ON MERCEDES...

I AM DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE WE?VE KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ONLY FOR A SHORT TIME SINCE LAST YEAR WHEN WE WENT TO OUR DEALERSHIP THE COMPLAINT OF SMELLING GAS FUMES AFTER PUMPING GAS. WE SMELLED THE FUMES IN THE REAR CABIN AREA PRIMARILY. WE HAD THE DEALERSHIP AND A COUPLE OTHER CERTIFIED MERCEDES BENZ SHOPS LOOK AT THE ISSUE DETERMINING THAT THE SENDING UNIT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. WE WERE GOING TO DO THE SERVICE LATER AFTER ONE DEALERSHIP TOLD US TO JUST KEEP THE CAR HALF FULL WITH FUEL UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO COMPLETE THE SERVICE REPAIR FOR OVER $1,000 OUT OF OUR OWN POCKETS. *TR

NO I HAVE AN E320 AND THEY WONT FIX THIS ISSUE. AFTER FILLING UP DRIVING WITH THE SMELL OF FUEL IN THE CABIN HAS CAUSED SERIOUS HEADACHES FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. EVEN PARKING IN MY GARAGE HAS FILLED MY WHOLE HOUSE WITH THE SMELL OF FUEL. WAS TOLD FROM DEALER PARTS DEPT , VERY COMMON FOR SEAL TO WEEP , REPLACED ,BUT STILL SAME PROBLEM , AFTER LAST FILL UP , DRIED AROUND PUMP AND GAS JUST WEEPED THOUGH TOP OF SENDING UNIT , HAIR LINE CRACK I ASSUME , WILL REPLACE SENDING UNIT MYSELF . DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS DOESN'T MEET RECALL STANDARDS PER MERCEDES. *TR
WHILE TRAVELING ON THE WASHINGTON DC BELTWAY IN THE FAST LANE, IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN LEAVING US STRANDED IN VERY HEAVY TRAFFIC. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS WAS A VERY PRECARIOUS POSITION. FORTUNATELY, POLICE ASSISTANCE ARRIVED AND CALLED A TOWING SERVICE AND GOT US OUT OF HARM'S WAY. THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS A FAILED CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR. THIS RESULTS IN THE COMPUTER TURNING OFF THE IGNITION CREATING AN OBVIOUSLY HAZARDOUS SITUATION. I REPORTED THIS TO MERCEDES CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT THEY'RE REACTION WAS THAT THIS OCCURS INFREQUENTLY, BUT THEY WERE AWARE THAT IT DOES HAPPEN. SO I AM NOTIFYING YOU FOR YOUR INFORMATION. *TR
WE NOTICED A STRONG GAS SMELL ESPECIALLY RIGHT AFTER FUELING UP THE CAR. WE PARKED OUR CAR IN AN ENCLOSED GARAGE SO THE ENTIRE GARAGE SMELLED OFF GAS. AS THE GAS LEVEL WAS REDUCED FROM OPERATING THE CAR THE GAS SMELL WENT AWAY. WHEN WE FILLED UP AGAIN THE GAS SMELL WAS BACK. WE MOVED AND HAD OUR CAR IN AN OPEN AIR PARKING STALL AND IT DIDN'T SEEM AS MUCH OF A PROBLEM. NOW WE HAVE AN ENCLOSED GARAGE AGAIN AND THE SMELL OF GAS IS VERY NOTICEABLE. AGAIN THE SMELL IS THE STRONGEST RIGHT AFTER FUELING. WE RECENTLY REPLACED THE CHARCOAL CANISTER AND SHUTOFF VALVE (REGENERATION VALVE AND PURGE VALVE) FOR A COST OF $700 BUT THIS HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. *TR
AFTER REFUELING, THE CAR HAS A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CAR. THE AIR BRAKES MAKE A ROARING NOISE WHEN PRESSED. THE AIR BAG IS DEACTIVATED SRS INDICATOR REMAINS ON. *TR
