This is a follow up to a compliant that I put in early this year or late last year. There is not much discussion of the failed occupancy sensor for the passenger front airbag on this website, but it does get discussed online more often. I am not sure why Infiniti says the entire seat must be replaced ($5,000 or so) rather than just replacing the sensor. Also, the seat has now been discontinued. It's unfortunate that there is no other solution that I am aware of other than finding a discontinued seat.
2012 Infiniti G25x: Occupancy sensor failed (diagnostic code B1018) around 132,000 miles. This is a common problem with Infiniti cars. Apparently for 2007 and 2008, there were recalls, but this problem continued into later years with no recall. The cost I was quoted to repair this (replacing the entire passenger seat) was $5,000, which is not practical for a 12 year old car. Although I haven't been able to get an exact answer, it seems that this failure not only shuts off the front passenger airbag, but the entire SRS system (all airbags and all pretensioners) - I haven't been able to get a definite answer from multiple dealers that I contacted or from the Infiniti national customer service. Otherwise, the car has been the most reliable car I ever owned, but there should be at least some compensation for this problem which has existed for a number of years.
Last Friday, 7/25/21, while driving home from work, my car instrument panel, speed odometer, everything went totally black, I lost steering and pulled into a 7-11 parking lot. The passenger side of the car was smoking. I was locked in as door unlock wouldn’t work, nothing would work. I was unable to turn the car off and literally felt like I could pass out from smoke inhalation quickly called 911. People in the parking lot were trying to unlock my door to get me out of the vehicle. The fire department arrived and after a few minutes were able to get me out, but the car would not turn off. They forced the hood open and had to cut the cables to the battery to turn it off. It was terrifying!!! I can’t imagine what would have happened if I had been on the Turnpike or major Highway, I’m sure I would have crashed the vehicle. I had the car towed to Shamrock Automotive who advised that the PCF module Wiring harness had literally caught on fire. Currently it would cost over $8K to fix the car and it’s not worth more than $9k.
