Level for oil change was at 30%, took it in and it only had 2.5 quarts of oil. No indication I was low, no oil leak, and it affected the valves. Honda of Lisle said this is common issue with 4 cylinder models, yet there is no recall. Now I have to check my oil every week and add as needed, and will have an large bill to replace the engine. The vehicle has only 61,000 miles.
Title: Engine Defect – Excessive Oil Consumption and VTC Actuator Failure My 2016 Honda CR-V (purchased from Mohawk Honda, serviced at Rensselaer Honda) developed a serious engine defect after only about 25,000 miles. The vehicle began consuming excessive oil, and later the VTC actuator failed, causing severe loss of power during acceleration and uphill driving, creating unsafe conditions. Dealership confirmed: •Excessive oil consumption from stuck piston rings. •White smoke due to oil burning. •VTC actuator and timing damage. •EPR cleaning service failed to fix the issue. Despite evidence of a manufacturing defect, Honda denied goodwill assistance. The dealership also gave unsafe instructions (drive 1,000 miles with low oil), which worsened the damage. This defect causes loss of power while driving, which is a serious safety hazard. I request NHTSA investigate Honda’s handling of piston ring and VTC defects. While driving at highway speeds almost a total loss of engine power occurred causing a safety issue. Five warning indicators lit at this time: Tire pressure monitoring system Malfunction indicator lamp (check engine) Vehicle stability assist warning Electric power steering warning This problem resulted in a Honda Dealer service replacement of the High Pressure Fuel Pump which cost me over $2800 and another $400 for a rental car. There was a recall for the 2017-2020 CRV for an identical(?) issue. This 2016 may have been a later manufacture and had the same fuel pump. A very reputable local garage examined the car and were unwilling to repair the CRV because they were quite familiar with the frequent and problematic Honda CRV high pressure fuel pump issues. It was Drellishak's Service in Rocky River Ohio.
CVT complete transmission failure consistent with Service Bulletin 16-053 from Honda, dated September 9, 2016. I was not the owner of the car at this time, so a recall notice was never received by me. Currently, Transmission is being fully replaced at 94,000 miles at a cost of $5700. It is a safety issue, due to the car not being able to drive over 30mph, nearly stalling at traffic lights and stop signs. A rear end collision would be imminent.

Engine loosing oil inside the engine. Honda dealership Lemon Grove Honda reworked the engine. New Ring Set, Gasket kit, Spark plugs, coolant, oil seal, 2 o-rings 12.6 x 2.4 and 1 o-ring other. 1/27/23 Replaced pistons rings, including cylinder head gasket and spark plugs, after replacing rings and gasket tested said 1005 good Cost for me was $4397.86. Prior to this, they replaced the gaskets and spark plugs for $800. Complained that is might be the same problem again 5/24 and they charged me $2559.14 for labor and said it was not the same problem. Then in 9/24 it was seen then on 10/4 they said the problem was the same and engine was not good anymore. Looked for help with Honda, and none was given -- just told it was my tough luck. I bought this car from Hillside Honda in Queens, NY in June 8th 2016. It was a floor model that I was told by the salesman I got a great deal on it and I found out later it wasn't true. Let me get to the point, I found out this car is a lemon car. From the frontal airbag to the engine, it's a complete nightmare. My focus is more on the engine itself. The vehicle vibrates too much, I keep this car well maintained. Car shuts down intermittently after coming to a complete stop and accelerating to continue. It's shutting down in the middle of traffic, which makes for a very dangerous situation for my self, my child (which has witnessed it turn off) and for other drivers approaching my stopped vehicle in the middle of the road, this is very scary and my fear is that one day I won't be able to restart my car on time/in a split second to move it out of traffic quickly and will cause a very bad accident due to this shutting off. Multiple times I have gone to pull out onto a road and the car has hesitated and actually stalled a few times almost causing me to be hit. Starting in 2021. Around 70,000 miles the Check Engine light came on saying Emission Control problem and went off. Around this time it all began. At 80,000 miles it would cycle on and off intermittently "check engine" and they told me it was the Catalytic Convertor which i replaced at over $2,000 dollars in cost.. I still have the issue. Honda is hiding a problem and there are articles saying its the O2 and MAF sensors. causing these issues and the software also. I was driving on the Interstate when my car suddenly lost power and I was put in an unsafe position of trying to get my car into the emergency lane. The warning lamps flashed on the dash and in particular the engine light., The car dropped speed from 70 to 20 mph and would not accelerate. Upon trying to accelerate the engine made a loud noise and would not accelerate. I had it towed and the car corrected from limp mode but I still don’t know if it will reoccur. I’ve had it looked at by my dealer and was told the car went into limp mode but they said they couldn’t pinpoint why. my car is available to be inspected.

Car will shut off when still cold or at a complete stop and then when you press the gas to accelerate either the car will shut off and stall or will not go anywhere. Usually when that happens I put car in neutral and drive to go or put it on neutral rev it a few times then I can either drive or reverse. Already had this car serviced last year at the dealership was told faulty fuel injectors. Car drove good for about a year and now back to either stalls or doesn’t move. Really frustrating and a potential hazard especially when trying to make a left turn or right turn and stalls or doesn’t move.

The pistons and piston rings have failed, and the engine burns oil rapidly. There is no indication by the vehicle of the issue as far as any dashboard lights, etc. I brought my vehicle into the Honda dealership over a year ago with a noise the car was making. I was told by Honda that my car had burned oil, and to do an oil consumption test and the results would be submitted to Honda corporate. Honda corporate forced me to do multiple oil consumption tests for over a year while my car was still in warranty. Now that my car is out of warranty, Honda corporate will not pay for my car to get fixed. Oil stick smells heavily of gas, the engine which my car has is known to inject too fuel in the oil. I have had it checked at the honda dealership and was informed, it was normal that there is nothing wrong, however when I check my oil stick it is very apparent that there is gas in the oil compartment. (my dipping stick should not smell like my gas tank) I will be having a second dealership look at the oil tank again.

I have submitted this complaint before. We sold the car rather than deal with a potential t-bone accident. When starting from a stop, as you would accelerate into a traffic lane the car without warning would suddenly act as if the key was turned off, ceasing to accelerate. Exiting our neighborhood onto a thoroughfare with typical 35-50 mph traffic, my wife & I both had frequent instances of this failure to accelerate or dead throttle response. With 50+ years of driving, 5 years of SCCA road racing, 5 years of teaching defensive driving, I'm still not sure what I've done to get the car to accelerate & avoid getting t-boned. On Sep 10 2020, when I drove the CR-V uphill on Crenshaw southbound near Indian Peak, it could not accelerate and get into "limp" mode. No engine light was on. Once I was able to use momentum to pull over, restarted the car, it was driving as normal. I drove it to the nearest Honda dealer and left with them for a week. They could reproduce the issue by driving exactly to the same spot. They investigated and replaced the whole tank of fuel, suspecting water in the gas tank. The car vibrates so much my hands will shake on the steering wheel while idling and at time while driving. Any items in the car will shake. Complained to service department everytime vehicle brought in for service. Was told nothing could be done to fix issue and vibration is normal.

Honda CRV E-XL bought in 2016 from Coral Springs Honda, FL and always maintained at Honda Dealership died on freeway on 08/06/2021 in approximately 5 years. When towed in nearest Firestone they routed to Honda as they suspect the coolant has breached into 4 cylinders. STARTED THE CAR IN THE PARKING LOT. THE ENGINE WAS IDLING A BIT ROUGH. PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE. SUDDENLY THE ENGINE ROARED AND ACCELERATED. TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKE. IT DID NOT WORK. FORTUNATELY DID NOT HIT ANY OTHER CARS IN THE PARKING LOT. THE CAR JUMPED OVER THE CURB AT THE EDGE OF THE PARKING LOT, WENT INTO A DITCH AND HIT A TREE. CAME TO A STOP. THE AIRBAG WAS ACTIVATED. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING AT HIGH RPM. FORTUNATELY THIS MALFUNCTION HAPPENED IN A PARKING LOT AND NOT ON A BUSY CITY ROAD !!!!! THIS BIZARRE INCIDENT POINTS TO POTENTIAL MALFUNCTION OF THE COMPUTER CONTROLS. FORENSIC INVESTIGATION IS NEEDED TO RULE OUT THIS POSSIBILITY.

I SMELL GASOLINE WHILE SITTING IN THE CABIN DRIVING. MY CAR HAS SAT ALL NIGHT AND I'M PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY WITH THE CAR RUNNING AND I SMELL GASOLINE. THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A KNOCKING SOUND IN Q1 OF 2020. A TECH STATED THAT THE SOUND HAPPENS BECAUSE OF THE LOW OIL LEVEL IN THE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 21,000.
THE AC SYSTEM HAS SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. GOING INTO THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS THE AC SYSTEM OCCASIONALLY BLOWS COLD AIR BUT QUICKLY SWITCHES TO HOT AIR WHEN DRIVING FOR EXTENDED PERIODS (OVER 10 MINUTES). THIS IS NOT ONLY A HUGE INCONVENIENCE IN 80+ DEGREE WEATHER, BUT ALSO A SAFETY CONCERN WITH EXCESSIVE HEAT CIRCULATING IN THE CAR IN THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS. I HAVE TRIED TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM BY CHECKING FREON COMPRESSOR AND CONDENSER BUT NOTHING GIVES. THIS SEEMS TO BE A MAJOR ISSUE ON 2016 MANUFACTURING FOR CIVICS AND CRV'S.
