2016 GMC SIERRA 1500 Power Train Problems

Truck has 8L90 transmission, has recently started shuddering at speeds from 65-75 and higher, I am experiencing issues with occasional hard shifts from 1st to 2nd gear, and 2 days ago experienced a very hard shift around 30-40mph when it slammed it made the tires chirp. 85k miles.

Vehicle sluggish upon acceleration. Transmission downshifts unexpectedly. Vehicle continues to rev bounce at steady acceleration and when driving at speed without acceleration.

My transmission jerks randomly. It's done it since it's been brand new. When it does it, it is usually when it deaccellerates. I don't know if it's dangerous but I was hoping they had a fix for it by now.

Paint bubbling on roof. When turning on key, the radio makes a loud buzzing sound. On 11/16/2024, when leaving a traffic light, the truck began surging and shuddering. Tachometer was revving up and down like the transmission was slipping with loss of power while trying to take off and accelerate. Transmission began to shift hard at 55 miles per hour on Highway. Then when I got to a parking lot it began shifting hard and also in reverse.

The vehicle has been in the dealership from where it was bought numerous of times for the same problem. Transmission shifts very hard from one to two and Has lots of slippage. Dealer recommended a transmission flush and it did not fix the problem. They would keep telling me that the transmission is normal for slipping and slamming hard while changing gears. My truck only has 40,000 miles on it and has the 8 speed 8L90 transmission. The truck bucks hard and has majorly delayed acceleration, especially on the initial startup of the vehicle. At this point the torque converter is going bad as well as the transmission fluid temperature sensor as per my mechanic when hooked up to the computer. It is now causing a fluttering of the RPMs, especially when the vehicle heats up after running for several minutes. It is severely impacting my fuel economy as well as my general safety when operation my truck. This is a known problem with this type of transmission but so far there has been no recall issued, only a class action lawsuit that I am having a hard time joining. The transmission overheated due to a poorly manufactured torque converter which caused my truck to come to a sudden stop on the interstate nearly being struck by several semi tractor trailers leaving my family and I in a dangerous situation. The electrical system keeps throwing a code for short to ground as well as low voltage codes. The voltage gauge on the dash shows either over charging or under charging. The in dash radio and screen shut off and turns back on by itself while driving down the road. Occasionally while backing up or pulling forward the truck completely stalls. The transmission was subject to the shudder issue, we took it to King Cadillac in Lake City, SC for the transmission flush. Torque Converter failed and destroyed the transmission at 79,600 miles

The transmission is almost banging into gear vibrating at high speeds the shifts can jerk the vehicle and cause an accident

When in park and I shift the transmission into Reverse, the force engaging the gear bangs and shakes the vehicle. The transmission is not regulating the power. The vehicle is available for inspection. I took the vehicle in to the dealer service and they were able to reproduce it. They claim that there is a bulletin from GM motors and this is considered normal. The bang is hard and shakes the vehicle, definitely not normal. It started after 50k miles and the truck has 62k miles now. No one else inspected the vehicle and no warnings are indicated by the vehicle.

The torque converter jerks the truck and causes vibration. This does jerk the vehicle unsafely at times of stop lights. As I know this was a lawsuit at one point with GMC itself. It does nothing but get worse with pulling and jumping the truck going down the road.

Torque converter and pump assembly failed at 66k miles 2016 GMC Sierra. Currently being repaired by the dealership. They first quoted me $4200 to replace but was able to talk them down to $3100.

At low/idle speeds the brake pedal becomes hard and will not stop. At speeds between 35-75mph the engine/transmission has a vibration about every 10seconds and the transmission shifts hard and/or rough at times when first taking off.

Took my truck to gmc dealership to get brakes and transmission fluids flushed, then a few months later I noticed that my truck started shifting hard. then one day going back home from work I lost 6th and 5th gear, would not go into either one. then I lost all gears and would just red line when I pressed the gas. had to coast into a parking lot to get a tow truck and carry it to a transmission shop. the shop said that the universal clutch was burned up and would now cost me $5,000 to fix.

Just purchased this used vehicle in December 2022 with high miles (202000) with a dealers extended warranty. Problem has happened twice in 2 weeks. While backing up slowly and turning my wheel the vehicle stalled and Service Stabilitrak came across the dash as it died. Then upon restarting it told me to roll drivers window down and up and the memory seat function cleared as did my clock. Like it had a battery replacement and reset to factory. Took into a GMC service shop where they found code P0700 and P0711. They were able to replicate my concern. Telling me to replace the transmission harnesses and that it is not covered under my extended warranty for powertrain. Going to cost me $1500 in repairs. After extensive research I see this is a common problem yet no recall has been issued for my 2016 GMC Sierra crew cab. Very frustrating!!

Was in a parking lot, moving just 2mph and had to literally mash down on the brake pedal - both forward and backward. Also, I put my truck in drive and has been making a noise in the transmission it seems and is a loud + lurches forward a bit. Additionally, I was traveling on vacation to Rockport, TX. I've made a appointment with the dealership here at 10:00 A.M. on 9 Dec 22, it's the earliest I can get my truck in. There was previously a brake issue covered under warranty & should be again!

After an unexpected battery failure, truck shuttered and jerked violently when coming to a stop. Replaced battery and was driving home when shuttering returned and dropped into neutral as if it was trying to find the gear. Pull over and was within inches of being rear ended as it rolled to a stop on shoulder. Forced to abandon vehicle while waiting for tow truck for safety. Concerns were raised to dealer around 50k miles when something seemed off, but was dismissed with the excuse that it was normal. Now with 120k, I have nothing more than a $45k yard ornament.

My transmission shifts very hard from first to second gear, and when accelerating onto a freeway. It literally jolts the entire vehicle. Recently on two occasions at less than 5 mph it shifted so hard it felt as if I was struck from behind by another vehicle. I’ve been told by my local GMC service department that it is a “learning” transmission and it’s learning how I drive. That was their remedy.

Transmission Harsh 1-2 shift. Under light or heavy throttle. While putting truck into gear the transmission will not engage and will rev up and then take off or when coming to a stop the adaptive shift clunks very hard as if someone has hit you from behind. It will then surge forward without any warning. I have had it in to the dealer several times and they tell me it a know issue but they wont do anything about it.

When I was driving down the road the transmission just quit working. But I have had ongoing problems of the truck shifting hard and popping out of gear while driving. I have also went to get on the interstate and the truck pop out of gear while merging in traffic now I can’t go more than a mile or 2 miles and truck quits moving completely. I have to turn truck off then bank on it will drive a mile and do the same thing again which has left me stranded in the middle of the road.

I pulled out in traffic with enough room to accelerate to the appropriate speed and my transmission begin to shutter and slip. My truck would not go! I was afraid I would be struck in the rear. This was the first sign of malfunction. I took truck in that day to Hardy GMC in Dallas GA. They informed me my transmissions was ruined. 84,000 miles. I have never towed anything, except golf clubs suitcases, and family members. It shameful that these transmissions are failing around the country with very little wear on them. I repaired the transmissions at an expense to me of $4,500. The warranty on the original transmission was only 60,000 miles, however, the warranty on the remanufactured transmission is 3 year or 100,000 mile. What a joke. Do the right thing. I purchased a certified pre owned 2016 sierra slt in February and just after a month of owning it a notification started to pop up and chime on my dash stating "SERVICE TRAILER BRAKE SYSTEM". I have had my truck in the shop multiple times after to have this issue repaired and nothing has worked. They replaced the dash GM Genuine Part 84108373 break controller switch and buttons, the GM Genuine Part 23337305 trailer brake control module as well as the 7/4 pin 23404450 GM OEM Trailer Tow Receptacle. Nothing has fixed this issue! when the truck chimes I lose my trailer breaks and this is extremely dangerous hauling a camper weight 6500lbs. I also lose the ability to make phone calls, hear my blinker also the radio. This renders my truck inoperable and a danger to drive.

Torque converter went out causing hesitations which led to the entire transmission needing replaced.

When placing the truck in Drive, there is a very hard 'clunk' between first and second gear. Additionally, when driving, the truck shakes/shudders, mostly on the highway, but sometimes in town when driving between 25 and 70 m.p.h. The first instance was in March, 2019 whereby the dealer indicated this was normal operation for this transmission. As it seemed to get worse, I took it back and was told the transmission fluid was the wrong type and I had to pay to get it evacuated and changed out, even though this was an error on GMs part.

This complaint follows the same pattern for thousands of vehicles manufactured by General Motors. The specific component is the 8L90 (RPO-5MU) 8-speed transmission. The vehicle has experienced torque converter shudder since the purchase date of 06/28/2016. Numerous "attempts" via TSBs and cover-ups by General Motors has failed to alleviate the common shifting, shuddering, rough shifting, LURCHING out of control along with appurtenant damage to adjacent components and structures within the vehicle itself. Experienced error code of P0307 after vehicle backfired while on highway. Check engine light and stabilitrak lights immediately turned on and vehicle was shaking violently. Immediately took vehicle to an independent shop to have it looked at. After running diagnostics, pressure tests, and bore scope. It has been determined that piston in cylinder 7 is a complete loss and has a 0 pressure reading. From talking with shop owner he said he sees this issue quite often with GM vehicles due to DOD or AFM (active fuel management) that GM has on their engines. I'm at just shy of 67k miles, out of warranty, and needing to replace the engine.

Sudden jerking while traveling at low speeds. This jerking / shuttering happens while traveling forward, reverse, and coming to a stop. Hard shifting while driving. The transmission failed on my vehicle while going highway speeds. The vehicle shifted into neutral and I was force to pull onto the shoulder. The check engine light came on and would no longer drive without the vehicle being turned off and then back on. It would still repeat this problem over the next 2 miles while I traveled to an exit to get to a safe location. The vehicle was towed to the dealership and inspected. An internal problem was found and the whole transmission has to be replace at about 79000 miles.

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE HOME FROM WORK, THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC ON A STREET WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WOULD NOT MOVE AFTER ATTEMPTING TO PUT THE TRUCK IN "DRIVE". I HAD TO CALL FOR AN EMERGENCY ROADSIDE SERVICE (TOW TRUCK) WHICH TOWED THE VEHICLE TO A GMC DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPT. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN THAT THE TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER HAS DISINTEGRATED AND IT WOULD COST OVER $5000 TO REPAIR. THIS VEHICLE DID NOT PROVIDE ANY WARNINGS (NO WARNING SIGNAL DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL) THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED SERVICING. I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE FOR 3 YEARS. I'VE HAD MOVEMENT IN MY DRIVERS SEAT SINCE THE DAY I'VE OWNER THE TRUCK. GMC PUT IN A SHIM KIT TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM BUT IT'S STILL ACTING UP. THEY REFUSE TO REPLACE OR REPAIR ANY FURTHER. ALSO MY TRANSMISSION HAS A HORRIBLE SHIFTING PROBLEM.
