I WAS DRIVING WEST ON HWY 21 FROM NORTH ZULCH, TEXAS TO BRYAN, TEXAS I WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES AN HOUR, BUILDING SPEED TO 70. I HEARD A LOUD THUMP AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO VIBRATE . I STOPPED AND THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL GARAGE WHERE THE MECHANIC CHANGED THE TIRE AND TOLD ME THE TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE. THE BACK QUARTER PANEL WAS DAMAGED AND THE SIDE MOLDING WAS TORN OFF.MY HUSBAND TOOK THE TIRE TO FIRESTONE WHERE THE MECHANIC LOOKED AT THE TIRE AND SAID HE DID NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED BUT WE SHOULD REPLACE ALL THE TIRES ON THE VECHICLE. ON 8/15/97 WE WERE TRAVELLING WEST ON I-40 BETWEEN WINSLOW, AZ AND FLAGSTAFF, AZ WHEN OUR REAR PASSENGER TREAD CAME FLYING OFF OUR TIRE. TIRE TREAD BLEW OFF WHILE DRIVING ON STRAIGHT ROAD AT ABOUT 35MPH. SOME TREAD REMAINED HANGING OFF THE TIRE. TIRE WAS STILL INFLATED. WAS ORIGINAL TIRES FOR THE VEHICLE. ROTATION OCCURRED AT ABOUT THE PROPER INTERVALS. DECIDED TO REPLACE BOTH REAR TIRES AT THE TIME. NEW TIRES PLACED ON FRONT OF VEHICLE. OLD FRONT TIRES (STILL FIRESTONE ATX) WERE MOVED TO THE REAR. MY PROBLEM SOUNDED EXACTLY LIKE THOSE BEING REPORTED ON THE NEWS, SO I THOUGHT THAT I BETTER REPORT IT. WHEN IT HAPPENED I JUST ATTRIBUTED IT TO OLD AGE AND DID NOT THINK IT MIGHT BE PART OF AN OVERALL PROBLEM. I SUSPECT THERE ARE MANY MORE CASES LIKE THIS OUT THERE.
