ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2019, I WAS ATTEMPTING TO EXIT MY VEHICLE WHEN I PULLED THE DOOR HANDLE ONLY TO HAVE IT BREAK OFF IN MY HAND. I WENT TO REACH TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING LEFT TO PULL TO OPEN THE DOOR ONLY TO FIND THE HANDLE HAD BROKEN OFF CLEANLY FROM THE MECHANISM, LEAVING NO OTHER WAY TO EXIT THE VEHICLE OTHER THAN ROLLING DOWN THE WINDOW AND OPENING THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE THROUGH THE WINDOW OR BY SLIDING ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE VEHICLE TO EXIT THROUGH THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. IMMEDIATELY I THOUGHT THAT IF THIS HAD BEEN AN EMERGENCY, SUCH AS A FIRE OR WRECK, I WOULD PROBABLY NOT BE ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE IN A SAFE AND TIMELY MANNER, RISKING FURTHER INJURY OR DEATH. I CALLED MY LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP TO INQUIRE ABOUT A REPLACEMENT HANDLE & MECHANISM, ONLY...
MY DASHBOARD STARTED CRACKING AND I WENT TO THE DEALER AND GOT TOLD IT WAS ONLY A COSMETIC PROBLEM. I SEEN HUNDREDS OF GM TRUCKS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I ALWAYS USED THE WINDSHIELD SUN SHIELD AND ONLY CLEANED IT WITH A DAMPED CLOTH AS PER MANUFACTURE'S RECOMMENDATION. AS OF RIGHT NOW I AM SCARED THAT IF THE AIRBAGS GET ACTIVATED THEY WILL MAKE THE DASHBOARD FALL APART IN A CRASH. ALL THIS PROJECTILES COULD INJURE THE DRIVER AND THE PASSENGER SINCE THEY ARE SHARP AND COULD FLY AT HIGH SPEED.
THE DASH HAS CRACKED AT THE TOP RIGHT CORNER OF THE AIRBAG ON THE PASSENGER AIRBAG. NOTHING WAS DONE TO CAUSE THE CRACK. IT WASN'T THERE ONE DAY AND THEN IT WAS THERE THE NEXT DAY.
THE DASHBOARD IS CRACKED AT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG AND DIRECTLY ABOVE THE INSTRUMENTS/STEERING WHEEL.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRAME WAS RUSTED AND CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE FRAME WAS PERFORATED DUE TO RUST AND CORROSION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 5,700. *TR
