Defect: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2009-2011 K1300 (S, GT), 2010-2011 S1000 RR, 2005-2011 R1200 (GS, GS Adventure, R, RT, S, ST), 2006-2010 HP2 (Enduro, Megamoto, Sport), 2005-2008 K1200 (R, R Sport, S, GT), and 2012 K1600 (GT, GTL) motorcycles that were repaired under recall 13V-617 with the support ring remedy and where the fuel pump was...
Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump(s) with an improved version, free of charge. The recall began January 18, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect: BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2011 MOTORCYCLES. THE BEARINGS COULD BE SUBJECT TO CORROSION. THIS COULD LEAD TO REDUCED MOVEMENT OF THE LINK LEVER.
Consequence: THIS COULD AFFECT THE HANDLING OF THE MOTORCYCLE INCREASING THE RISK A DRIVER MAY LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE RESULTING IN A CRASH.
Remedy: BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

Defect: BMW IS RECALLING 428 MY 2007 F800 S, F800 ST, R1200 R, K1200 S, K1200 R, K1200 R SPORT, AND K1200 GT MOTORCYCLES. IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE COATING TO SEPARATE FROM THE INSIDE FACE OF THE STEERING DAMPER HOUSING. IF THIS HAPPENED, THE COATING COULD PARTIALLY CLOG THE OIL BORES WITHIN THE DAMPER.
Consequence: IF THIS OCCURRED, THE STEERING DAMPER COULD BECOME STIFF INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STEERING DAMPER FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN DURING SEPTEMBER 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

Defect: ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, FREQUENT SHORT TRIPS PARTICULARLY DURING COLD TEMPERATURES, CAN CAUSE WATER TO ACCUMULATE IN THE OIL TANK, AND WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, ESCAPING WATER VAPOR CAN CONDENSE ON THE OIL TANK AIR BLEED VALVE. IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES, THIS WATER COULD FREEZE AND BLOCK THE AIR BLEED VALVE.
Consequence: IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A PRESSURE BUILD UP IN THE OIL TANK COULD CAUSE IT TO RUPTURE, ALLOWING OIL TO LEAK ONTO THE REAR TIRE. AN OIL LEAK COULD CAUSE A FIRE. OIL ON THE REAR TIRE COULD CAUSE LOSS OF CONTROL.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW OIL TANK CAP CONTAINING A VALVE TO PREVENT OVERPRESSURE IN THE TANK FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 10, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

I HAVE A 2007 K1200GT MOTORCYCLE, AN EARLY PRODUCTION MODEL, THAT HAS DEVELOPED A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE SPEED CONTROL - THE ENGINE EXPECTEDLY REVS UP AND DOWN (HUNTS). I DID AN INTERNET SEARCH AND FOUND BMW NORTH AMERICA SERVICE BULLETIN 13 003 07 (058), WHICH DESCRIBES THE EXACT PROBLEM WITH THE BIKE. THE SERVICE BULLETIN WAS INTENDED FOR THESE EARLY PRODUCTION BIKES. HOWEVER, THE ISSUE ONLY SURFACED RELATIVELY RECENT ON MY BIKE, WHICH IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS ONLY 12,000 MILES ON THE BIKE AT THE TIME. I TOOK THE BIKE INTO THE SAN FRANCISCO BMW DEALER AND THEY REFUSED TO COVER THE RECOMMENDED REPAIRS. THEN CONTACTED BMW NORTH AMERICA AND THEY HAVE ALSO REFUSED TO FIX THE ISSUE. THE ISSUE IS PARTICULARLY HAZARDOUS, AS THE BIKE WILL CUT OUT UNEXPECTEDLY AND/OR ACCELERATE DESPITE CLOSING THE THROTTLE, AS IS NECESSARY WHEN APPROACHING A CORNER. AS A SENIOR PRODUCT SAFETY ENGINEER WITH OVER 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE, I FIND THIS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE, AND AM SHOCKED THAT BMW NA HAVE NOT VOLUNTARILY ADDRESSED THIS ON ALL EARLY PRODUCTION UNITS.
FUEL STRIP FAILURE FOR SECOND TIME AFTER BMW EXTENDED WARRANTY TO 12 YEARS AFTER ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE LOW FUEL LIGHT REMAINS ON CONSTANTLY. COULD CAUSE A CRASH IF THE MOTORCYCLE WERE TO RUN OUT OF FUEL.
FOR THE SECOND TIME THE ENING SHUT OFF COMPLETELY UNDER ACCELARATION. THE ELECTRONICS AND ENGINE WENT TOTALLY DEAD. HAD TO PULL OVER TO RESTART. THE BIKE WAS BEING SHIFTED FROM 1ST GEAR INTO SECOND WHEN IT DIED.
BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER ONLY 8000 MILES. MOTORCYCLE IS ADULT DRIVEN, LIGHTLY USED, REGULARLY MAINTAINED AND GARAGED. BMW CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW K1200 GT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH ATTEMPTING TO ENGAGE THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO AVOID A CRASH, THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE ABS PUMP FAILED AND THE WHEELS LOCKED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000.
