2020 BMW 330I Unknown Or Other Problems

Manufacturer unable to remedy recall. No parts available nor timeline of when a replacement will be available.

The vehicle has persistent issues with its software and safety systems, creating significant safety risks. The Remote Software Upgrade feature fails to install, despite indicating it is “ready to install” with preparations complete. This prevents critical updates that could address safety and performance defects. BMW Customer Support was unable to resolve the issue, and a local dealership confirmed no hardware faults but could not address the software issue due to limitations as a non-BMW-certified service center. Several critical safety features also do not function properly. The Blind Spot Warning system has never issued alerts, leaving the driver unaware of vehicles in adjacent lanes. The Forward Collision Warning system has never activated, even in close proximity to other vehicles. The Lane Departure Warning fails to consistently activate, while Lane Keeping Assistance operates only intermittently, despite being designed to engage above 40 mph. It's been about 3 weeks since the most BMW recent software update, (11/2023.50) has downloaded to my vehicle via the BMW connected drive services. This is the second time that over the air, BMW connected drive upgrades have failed to install on my vehicle. As before, the upgrade has downloaded to the automobile but will not activate as has happened successfully in the past. The above upgrade is supposed to solve a safety/visability problem, a stated legal requirement, pertaining to the position of the heads up display. I have consulted with BMW customer relations and Technical advisors. I received and followed several sets of recommended self-install procedures without success. I was the advised to contact my BMW Service Center in Seattle who would be able to install the update. However, they, in turn, advised me the problem was related to a weak battery. The lower active grill on my 2020 BMW 330i failed. I purchased the vehicle on January 24th. On February 27th, the check engine light came on. I called the dealership I bought it from. They told me they did not have the necessary technology to diagnose, so I took it to a BMW mechanic. The mechanic told me it is a known warranty issue with this particular BMW, and that BMW should fix it for free under the limited warranty bulletin. When I tried to contact BMW about this issue, they refused to pay for it stating that my specific VIN number was not affected by this issue, and therefore they wouldn't pay for it. I have been in the motorcycle industry 1988-2000 and the auto industry since 2000 to current, a break for about 10 years in there. I am fairly mechanically knowledgeable. On 8/1/2 was showing a customer a BMW 330I that we had in inventory. The customer sat in the driver's seat, started the engine and popped the primary hood latch. I was at the front on the vehicle. Since I deal with every make, model and years finding the secondary latch release can be challenging. Initially, I felt under the hood at the center, not finding it I proceeded to feel my way down both sides of the hood. Still not finding the release I inserted my right hand into the grill at first grill opening center right (drivers side). I was feeling inside to find the elusive release. I do not know What component or system failed or malfunctioned, the car is available for inspection upon request. The car started and moved forward with no driver or passenger inside and stopped because it hit my garage door from which it was parked 3 feet from before it moved forward driverless. A car which moves by itself is unsafe because it can hit a person or object. to date, 8/11/2021 the problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The car has not been inspected. Today a message from BMW initiated an inspection appointment at the dealer. Problem occurred without warning.

MY VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A DRIVEWAY. PRIOR TO PARKING, I HAD FOLLOWED THE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO HAVE MY CAR MEMORIZE THE LAST 100 FEET DRIVEN IN ORDER TO USE THE BACKUP ASSIST FEATURE. WHEN I STARTED MY VEHICLE, I ACTIVATED THE BACKUP ASSIST FEATURE FOLLOWING THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS. MY VEHICLE RESPONDED ACCORDINGLY AND THE BACKUP ASSIST FUNCTIONED NORMALLY FOR THE FIRST FEW SECONDS. THE BACKUP ASSIST THEN DISENGAGED AND MY CAR ACCELERATED BACKWARDS, WENT OFF ITS TRACK AND BACKED FORCEFULLY INTO A BRICK WALL BEFORE I COULD APPLY THE BRAKES. DAMAGE TO THE REAR OF THE CAR WAS EXTENSIVE. I DID HAVE THE CAR EVALUATED BY BMW ENGINEERS FOR POTENTIAL DEFECTS IN SOFTWARE OR SENSORS, BUT I WAS TOLD THAT THE SYSTEM FUNCTIONED AS INTENDED.
