Bulletin Summary
Mercedes-Benz AG (MBAG), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner vans, has determined that the torsion bar on certain Sprinter vehicles from platform 907 (VS30) was not bolted to the torsion bar linkage in accordance with design specifications during front axle assembly by the component supplier. The shim on the torsion bar was incorrectly installed between the nut and the torsion bar, rather than between the ball stud and the torsion bar. Due to the incorrect assembly, the torsion bar may not meet operational strength requirements. Settling effects may occur between the journal flange and the torsion bar. These effects reduce the bolt preload at the connection, which increases fatigue on the journal and could lead to a fatigue fracture of the journal, increasing the risk of a crash.
About Technical Service Bulletins
A Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) is a document issued by a vehicle manufacturer to its dealers, describing a known issue with a specific vehicle or set of vehicles and the recommended procedure to fix it. Unlike recalls, TSBs are not mandatory and are typically only performed if an owner reports the related issue. However, TSBs can be an indicator of common problems with a vehicle.
