NHTSA Complaint #11668056 — 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE

On [XXX] I was leaving a Nebraska residence to return to Montana. During the trip I had to stop on the highway because the lift gate released and flew open at 55 mph. At that time I pulled over and the gate would not close. I tried several times to close it and so did other drivers who stopped to help me. At that time the resolution was to disconnect the battery and then reconnect. This helped. Upon returning home there was discussion with other drivers on my policy that stated they have had the same issue on prior dates in the last 6 months. The lift gate mechanism has been recalled and replaced on this vehicle on two occasions but the latching mechanism is the issue for this vehicle. To unlatch while in transit and not relatch make it a hazard. Conversations with local shops do not result in a resolution.
