NHTSA Complaint #11571878 — 2011 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the battery warning light illuminated on the instrument panel, after which a burning odor filled the interior of the vehicle, prompting the contact to pull to the shoulder of the roadway. After a visual inspection, the contact observed smoke emanating from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the alternator, resulting in damage to the PCM. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V435000 (Electrical System). The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 126,000.
