Consumer Description

I have a 2015 Newmar Canyon Star 3953 (on an F-53 Motorhome Chassis) serial number [XXX] with 57,335 miles. The attached picture does not do justice to what I have to say. The picture is the front rotor of the brake assembly. In between the outer and inner plates of the rotor are two steel rods. The only purpose (that is thought) of the rod is to balance the rotor. The problem is, the rotor heats up as you brake then expands the rotor which loosens the area around the rod. Centrifugal force moves the rod out of the air gap and it starts to hit the caliper (in the picture you can see the top of the rod is shiny) resulting in a thumping sound or what has happened, the rotor cracks. I have had to replace both front calipers and rotors as a result of these rods. Thankfully when the rotor cracked I was only traveling about 30 mph. I can only imagine what would have happened if I was traveling 60 mph. In talking with the mechanic the rod could have jammed on the front edge (worst case) of the rotor then broke all of the fins in the air gap and perhaps stopped the rotation of the tire. These were factory-installed rotors which clearly (in my opinion) a safety hazard and warrants a recall or at least an investigation. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
