Consumer Description
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 55MPH AND COMPLETELY LOST POWER ON MY 2011 BMW 328XI. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO TRAFIIC SO I SLOWED DOWN AND STOPPED ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY OPENED THE HOOD, AND THEN I HEARD THE ENGINE MAKING A RATTLING/MARBLE NOISE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP FOR A DIAGNOSIS AND THEY SAID IT COULD BE THE CAMSHAFT BEARING LEDGE (WHICH IS NOT COVERED) OR A VANOS BOLT(WHICH HAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ALREADY ON IT). BUT IF THE ISSUE IS NOT THE VANOS BOLT AND IT HAS TO DO WITH THE CAMSHAFT BEARING LEDGE, I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $2000 FOR THE CAMSHAFT BEARING LEDGE SERVICE, I TOOK THE CAR HOME AND PARKED IT. I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WITH THIS PROBLEM, AS I HAVE SEARCHED IN FORUMS AND WEBSITES FOR FEEDBACK. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE AND I DON'T SEE IT FAIR THAT WE HAVE TO PAY FOR AN ENGINE PROBLEM THAT BMW HAS HAD KNOWINGLY SINCE THE BEGINNING (2007) AND NEVER RESOLVED ON LATER MODELS. THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE COVERED BY A RECALL AS IT IS DANGEROUS FOR PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF TO BE DRIVING THE CAR WITH CHANCES OF THE ENGINE STUMBLING AT HIGH SPEEDS. THE ORIGINAL CAMSHAFT BEARING LEDGE IS SAID TO HAVE METAL RINGS THAT RUBS AGAINST METAL AND WEARS OFF QUICKLY, THE REPLACEMENT IS A RUBBER ONE THAT LASTS LONGER AND SHOULD NOT BRING ANYMORE ISSUES TO THE CAR. THE CAR ONLY HAS 62K MILES ON IT AND THE OIL HAS ALWAYS BEEN CHANGED EVERY 5K MILES, WHICH IS 10K MILES LESS THAN BMW RECOMMENDS. WE AS BMW CUSTOMERS SHOULD HAVE BOTH OPTIONS FREE OF CHARGE, AS THIS ISSUE IS NOTHING NEW TO BMW, IF NO ACTION IS TAKEN AGAINST BMW; THERE CAN BE MORE PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE FOR POTENTIAL 328XI OWNER, SPECIFICALLY THE E90 MODEL.
