TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT OIL WAS DISCOVERED IN THE DRIVEWAY WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TARBOX TOYOTA (3671 QUAKER LN, NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI 02852, (401) 884-5438) WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL WAS LEAKING AND THE FRAME WAS ROTTED. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 168,595.

THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FRAME WAS RUSTED AND HAD A HOLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST CAUSED BRACKET TO SNAP ON BUMPY ROADS MAKING VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. ISSUE HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH 4RUNNERS AND THIS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF IT.

ON MY WAY TO MY NIECES BIRTHDAY I DROVE OVER TO A LOCAL PARK. ON MY WAY THERE I DROVE OVER A POT HOLE AS I WAS CUT OFF BY ANOTHER DRIVER AND COULDN'T AVOID IT I HEAR A LOUD NOISE FROM THE REAR AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SWAY LEFT AND RIGHT AS I DROVE. I DIDN'T FEEL TO SAFE DRIVING IT AND I WAS A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY FROM MY HOME I DROVE BACK WITH THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON. I THEN PROCEEDED TO INSPECT THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT MY UPPER RIGHT CONTROL ARM BRACKET HAD RIPPED OFF THE FRAME !!!! I WAS VERY ALARMED AND SURPRISED TO SEE AS HOW MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 76000 MILES ON IT. THE AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE FRAME OF THE VECHICLE. I HAVE OWN VEHICLES FAR MORE OLDER WITH MORE MILES THAT HAVE NEVER RUSTED TO THIS...
FRAME RUST
'06 4RUNNER THAT THE FRAME IS COMPLETELY SHOT. IT STARTED BY HAVING TO REPLACE THE BALL JOINTS AND TIE ROD ENDS PREMATURELY AND NOW THE WHOLE VEHICLE SITS 3 INCHES LOWER ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THE REST OF THE VEHICLE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
MY WIFE'S 4RUNNER STARTED TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH EXTENSIVE BODY ROLL DURING ACCELERATION, BRAKING, AND BUMPS. IT MADE IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN IT'S OWN LANE ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THINKING THE PROBLEM WAS THE FRONT AND REAR SHOCKS I STARTED THE PROCESS OF REPLACING THEM. WHEN I WENT TO INSTALL THE REAR SHOCKS I NOTICED THE THE ACTUAL CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WAS THE FACT THAT THE FRAME HAD RUSTED THROUGH TO THE POINT THAT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS NO LONGER ATTACHED. I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE THAT JUST HAPPENS OVERTIME BUT THEN I REALIZE THAT THE RUST ON THE FRAMES ON MY OTHER CARS WAS NOT AS SUBSTANTIAL ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING ONE OF THEM WAS MANUFACTURED IN 1992.
I WAS DRIVING HOME ON A SUBURBAN ROAD GOING ABOUT 25 MPH AND TOOK A CORNER WHICH FELT LIKE I HAD HIT SNOW OR ICE, HOWEVER CONDITIONS WERE OPTIMAL. THE FISHTAILING CONTINUED AND I PARKED MY CAR AS IT DID NOT FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE. WHEN THE MECHANIC LOOKED AT IT HE SAID I COULD HAVE BEEN IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND POSSIBLY A ROLL HAD I TAKEN IT ON THE HIGHWAY. THE FRAME WAS CRACKED. WE ALSO HAD ALREADY REPLACED THE SUSPENSION ON THIS VEHICLE, AND THE EXHAUST FELL OFF ON THE HIGHWAY THE YEAR PRIOR DUE TO RUST. THE UNDERBODY OF THE CAR IS EXCESSIVELY RUSTED.
RARELY DRIVEN, ABOUT 65,000 MILES AND THE FRAME IS RUSTING OUT. IT STARTED EARLY.
THE ENTIRE UNDERBODY OF MY 4RUNNER HAS A SEVERE AMOUNT OF RUST AND CORROSION. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TREATING THE RUST WITH RUST CONVERTER AND WIRE BRUSHING TO NO AVAIL. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE RUSTED OUT COMPONENTS AND THE EFFECT IT WILL HAVE ON THE VEHICLE.
THE FRAME OF MY 2006 4RUNNER HAS EXCESSIVE CORROSION AND RUST. THERE ARE AREAS WHERE THE METAL HAS BECOME VERY THIN, AND MORE AND MORE METAL KEEPS FLAKING OFF ALL THE TIME. I HAVE ALREADY NOTICED A COUPLE OF HOLES THROUGH THE FRAME RAILS. I'M ESPECIALLY WORRIED ABOUT THE AREAS WHERE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS BOLT UP TO THE FRAME, THOSE AREAS SHOW SEVERE RUST AND CORROSION.
THE ROOF RUBBER STRIP ON THE DRIVER SIDE CAME FLYING OFF WHEN MY SUV TRUCK WAS UNDER THE AIR DRYER IN THE CAR WASH ON 03/31/2019. I HEARD A HORRIBLE THUMPING SOUND ON THE ROOF OF MY CAR AND NOTICED THERE WAS A RUBBER STRIP ON THE GROUND AND FOUND THAT THE ROOF RUBBER STRIP ON THE DRIVER SIDE WAS MISSING. I DON'T KNOW IF THE STRIPS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE GLUED WITH SOME KIND OF ADHESIVE OR NOT, AS I'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE WITH ANY CAR I'VE OWNED. I THINK IT IS LUDICROUS THAT A WELL-MEANING CAR OWNER CAN'T TAKE HIS OR HER CAR TO THE CAR WASH WITHOUT PARTS FLYING OFF THE CAR. I'M JUST GRATEFUL THAT THIS RUBBER STRIP WAS NOT FLYING OFF ON THE FREEWAY AS IT MAY FLY OFF EVEN MORE WHILE YOU ARE ON THE HIGHWAYS.
DESPITE HAVING PREVIOUSLY TREATED MY UNDERCARRIAGE WITH RUST-PROOF SPRAYS NUMEROUS TIMES, MY MECHANIC HAS TOLD ME THAT MY TOYOTA IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND IT DID NOT RECEIVE AN INSPECTION STICKER DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST. IN ADDITION TO THE COMPLETE RUSTING THE MY XREAS SHOCK/SUSPENSION SYSTEM (A $3,000 FIX), RUST DAMAGE HAS SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE UNDERCARRIAGE, RENDERING MANY THIN SPOTS BENEATH CRUMBLING FLAKES. WHILE DRIVING I HAVE NOTICED A RUMBLING FEELING BENEATH THE FRONT END AND THE DRIVING WHEEL SHAKES FURIOUSLY AT TIMES. MY MECHANIC HAS SAID THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM HAS BEEN COMPROMISED AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED, AND RUST IS COMPROMISING OTHER STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS.
HEAVY RUST ON FRAME. FOUND A HOLE ON MAIN BODY FRAME THIS WEEKEND WHILE AT WORK ON MY CAR LIFT.
THE FRAME OF THIS 4RUNNER IS RUSTED DUE TO WEATHER CONDITION OF SALT AND SNOW UP NORTH. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THESE 4RUNNERS
DURING REPLACEMENT OF FRONT BRAKES WHEN VEHICLE WAS ON A LIFT THE MECHANIC POINTED-OUT SEVERE FRAME RUST AND SAID THE TRUCK WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION IN PENNSYLVANIA. THERE WERE LARGE HOLES IN SEVERAL AREAS OF THE FRAME. THIS IS A 2006 MODEL WITH ONLY 85,000 MILES OF USAGE.
THE BRACKET HOLDING THE MOTOR MOUNT BROKE INTO THE FRAME CAUSING THE MOTOR TO HIT THE DIFFERENTIAL AND BREAK THE UPPER ENGINE OIL PAN. ATTACHED ARE TWO PICTURES, ONE SHOWING A NORMAL CONNECTION AT THE FRAME AND THE OTHER SHOWN BROKEN INTO THE FRAME. THIS MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY RUST/CORROSION AND/OR A WEAK CONNECTION WHICH WAS REINFORCED AT THIS POINT FOR 2007 AND LATER MODELS.DATE OF INCIDENT IS APPROXIMATE
THE VEHICLE FRAME AS WELL AS OTHER STEEL COMPONENTS INCLUDING IN THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM ARE EXPERIENCING SEVERE, PROGRESSIVE DETERIORATION DUE TO RUSTING. THE FRAME RUST IS THE MOST PROBLEMATIC AND DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT IS OCCURRING ON THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME AND, THEREFORE, CAN NEITHER BE SEEN NOR REMEDIATED. THE ONLY INDICATION I HAD OF THE SEVERITY OF THE FRAME DETERIORATION IS FROM ISOLATED LOCATIONS WHERE THE FRAME HAD RUSTED ENTIRELY THROUGH ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FRAME RAIL IN THE VICINITY OF THE FRONT DOOR. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I DETERMINED THAT THE INSIDE OF THE LONGITUDINAL FRAME RAILS ON BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDES IS SIGNIFICANTLY DETERIORATED ON THE INSIDE. THE CORROSION APPEARS TO START ON THE BOTTOM OF THE RAIL AND THEN PROGRESS UPWARD ON THE SIDE WALLS OF THE RAIL OVER TIME. THE BOTTOM OF THE TWO FRAME RAILS ARE LITTERED WITH RUST CHIPS RANGING IN SIZE...
THIS IS AN ADDENDUM TO COMPLAINT NUMBER 11175888. THE PURPOSE FOR THE ADDENDUM IS TO ADD BETTER PHOTOGRAPHS.
PURCHASED MY 4RUNNER CERTIFIED USED BY MODERN TOYOTA OF BOONE IN FEB 2012. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO TOYOTA THE NEXT YEAR LOCALLY AND THEY MENTIONED THAT I HAVE SEVERE FRAME RUST BUT BY THIS TIME THE WARRANTY HAS ALREADY EXPIRED. FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA REGARDING FRAME RUST AND THE FACT THAT I WAS SOLD THE VEHICLE AND IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED BY TOYOTA BECAUSE OF THE FRAME RUST. HAD AN ACCIDENT IN JUN 2018, HIGH FRONT END HIT, SHOULDN'T HAVE HAD ANY ISSUES WITH THE FRAME AND IT WASN'T CHECKED FOR INTEGRITY, BUT AFTER SOME VIBRATIONS AND WOBBLING AND DECREASED STABILITY ON THE HIGHWAY, TOOK TO MY LOCAL DEALER AND THE TECH DID A VISUAL INSPECTION AND SAID THE FRAME WAS BENT. AWAITING AN APPT FROM BODYSHOP TO VERIFY FINDINGS EVEN THOUGH INSURANCE ALREADY CLOSED THE CLAIM FROM ACCIDENT BUT INDEPENDENT MECHANIC STATES THAT THE FRAME MAY...
VEHICLE BODY IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. WOULD NOT PASS PA INSPECTION WITHOUT FRAME WELDING. OTHER SUSPENSION BARS AND FRAME ISSUES ALSO AS A RESULT OF RUST. OVER $4000 TO FIX THE ISSUE.
MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF RUST ALL THROUGHOUT THE FRAME HAVE LED TO WEAKENED OR NON- EXISTENT METAL IN MANY LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE NEAR ENTIRETY OF THE FRAME OF THE 4RUNNER. HAD A MECHANIC STATE THAT THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE 'GOTTEN RID OF' OR THAT I SHOULD BE 'OK WITH THE VEHICLE BREAKING CATASTROPHICALLY SOMETIME IN THE NEAR FUTURE' BECAUSE OF THE WEAKENED AND DEGRADED STATE OF THE FRAME.
THE FRAME IS ABNORMALLY RUSTED TO THE POINT ON PERFERATION IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS MAKING IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE.
ST LAST YEAR, TOYOTA SETTLED A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT INVOLVING APPROXIMATELY 1.5 MILLION TACOMA, TUNDRA AND SEQUOIA TRUCKS ALSO BUILT ON A FRAME1 ' TOYOTA AGREED TO INSPECT AND REPLACE THE FRAMES AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $3.4 BILLION. THIS CONFIRMS FRAME CORROSION IS A PROBLEM WELL-KNOWN TO TOYOTA AND THE PUBLIC.
STRUCTURAL - FRAME RUST. TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED THE 4RUNNER DUE TO FRAME RUST EXPERIENCED ON THE TACOMA. ATTACHED ARE PICTURES OF UNDERBODY. THIS VEHICLE WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION AND I AM LOCATED IN CALIFORNIA WHERE LAWS ARE STRICT.
2006 4RUNNER WITH 165K MILES WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION DUE TO EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST. I PURCHASED THIS BRAND NEW FROM THE DEALER AND HAVE TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF IT. THERE IS NO RUST ON THE BODY. THE RUST IS EXCESSIVE FOR OTHER SIMILAR VEHICLES FROM OTHER MANUFACTURES. TOYOTA HAS REPLACED SIMILAR FRAMES ON THEIR TACOMA MODELS BUT HAVE DONE NOTHING FOR 2006 4RUNNER OWNERS.
OUR FRAME IS RUSTED SO BADLY THAT IT WOULD HAVE FAILED THE SAFETY INSPECTION IF WE DID NOT FIX THE HUGE HOLES IN IT AT THE REAR BUMPER. WE ARE WERE TOLD BY OUR SAFETY INSPECTOR THAT OUR ENTIRE FRAME IS VERY RUSTY AND WE MUST DO SOMETHING TO FIX IT RIGHT NOW. IT WILL NOT PASS THE SAFETY INSPECTION FOR NEXT YEAR. I BOUGHT MY VEHICLE USED WITH 86,000 MILES ON IT. NOT EVEN A YEAR LATER MY POWER STEERING RETURN LINE RUSTED THROUGH AND WOULD NOT HOLD ANY POWER STEERING FLUID AT ALL. I REPLACED THE POWER STEERING RETURN LINES WITH AFTER MARKET RUBBER LINE. I FIGURED THIS OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND MY POWER STEERING GAVE OUT. MY SUB FRAME IS ROTTING AND RUSTING AWAY
THE FRAME IS RUSTED THROUGH IN A COUPLE OF PLACES ON MY 4RUNNER. MY LOCAL DEALER DID AN INSPECTION AND THERE ARE HOLES RUSTED THROUGH THE FRAME. I'M AFRAID IN AN ACCIDENT THAT THE FRAME WILL NOT HOLD UP AND CAUSE INJURY TO MY OCCUPANTS AND MYSELF. PLEASE INFORM TOYOTA OF THESE RUSTED FRAMES. THANK YOU!
I HAD THE CAR IN FOR MAINTENANCE AND THE MECHANIC FOUND EXCESSIVE RUST AT THE RIGHT REAR FRAME RAIL AT AND AROUND THE TRAILING ARM BRACE. MY MECHANIC STATES THAT THERE IS EXTENSIVE AND PERVASIVE RUST AND CORROSION ON MAIN STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS OF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, SPECIFICALLY ON THE FRAME AND FRAME MOUNTING POINTS, THAT IS DANGEROUS AS IT IS AFFECTING OTHER WORKING PARTS OF THE VEHICLE AND COULD CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I WAS SHOWN THE EXTENSIVE AMOUNT OF RUST AND CORROSION ON THE LADDER FRAME AND FRAME ASSEMBLY. THE FRAME IN ITS ENTIRETY IS EXTENSIVELY CORRODED AND AREAS WHERE BOLTS MOUNT PARTS TO THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE HAVE CORRODED AND CAUSED PARTS TO FAIL AND LITERALLY HANG OFF CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT REQUIRES THE FRAME ITSELF TO BE REPLACED AS WELL AS THESE OTHER...
EXCESSIVE RUST DAMAGE TO FRAME, GOT FIXED FOR LAST YEAR INSPECTION AND MORE PROBLEMS OCCURED THIS YEAR. VEHICLE OTHER WISE IN GOOD SHAPE, DISAPPOINTING TO GET RID OF IT. COULD CASE HAZARD DUE TO WELD OF CROSS MEMBER DEVELOPING HOLE.
EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME AND UNDERBODY COMPONENTS OF MY VEHICLE. MY FEAR IS THAT THIS RUST WILL EVENTUALLY LEAD TO FAILURE OF KEY FRAME STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS.
THE FRAME IS COMPLETELY COVERED IN RUST CAUSING CONSTANT REPAIRS TO BE MADE. MULTIPLE MECHANICS THINK I SHOULD GET RID OF IT AND BELIEVE PROBLEMS WILL KEEP COMING UP. UNSURE IF VEHICLE WILL BE SAFE TO DRIVE FOR MUCH LONGER.

THE FRAME AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS ARE EXTREMELY RUSTY TO THE POINT OF BEING UNSAFE. THE CAR IS EXTREMELY CLEAN AND WELL TAKEN CARE OF, YET THE FRAME CONTINUES TO RUST LIKE CRAZY. I'VE EXPERIENCED BROKEN BOLTS, LOSE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS, ETC. THE CAR HANDLES EXTREMELY POOR NOW, AND I'VE BEEN TOLD IT ISN'T WORTH IT TO REPLACE ANY SUSPENSION COMPONENTS SINCE THE MOUNTING POINTS ARE SO RUSTY.
