The clock spring (steering roll connector) component has failed, confirmed by the resulting complete loss of the horn function. SAFETY HAZARD: The component failure has resulted in the loss of the electrical connection to the Driver's Airbag System, rendering the primary airbag inoperable. This creates an unreasonable, life-threatening risk in the event of a collision. The problem has been diagnosed based on common failure patterns for this vehicle platform and confirmed via manufacturer correspondence. The problem first occurred on or about [Input Approximate Date] with the simultaneous failure of the horn and subsequent inoperability of the driver's airbag. The manufacturer, Subaru of America (SOA Case #251013-1700910), was contacted and acknowledged the concern but refused to cover the repair under a Goodwill Adjustment, citing an expired warranty, despite the component's direct link to the critical airbag safety system

Car unable to restart after sitting for several days. Battery and charging system test good after incident
#11643675 |
Yesterday, my car would not start due to a dead battery. This happened last week, as well. Both times, my husband used a battery charger to enable me to start my car. I have had this issue multiple times in the past, as well, and previously replaced the battery in 2022. I am also aware of a previous class action lawsuit, and several customer complaints about parasitic drain and poor battery performance in the 2015 Subaru Outbacks. Continuing to replace the battery is not only costly and bad for the environment, it doesn't solve the problem. There is some flaw in the electrical design of this car and Subaru needs to address the root cause. I am very concerned that I am going to be stranded somewhere in unsafe conditions, or not have my car available to me when I need to get to a critical appointment or respond to...

Battery fails repeatedly even after several battery replacements and dealer fixing the software at a hefty cost, presumable to make sure the battery is charging. My insurance company (State Farm) dropped my roadside assistance coverage after repeated requests to get help to start the car. I continuously dread and fear that the car will not start after a drive to the grocery store. I dear not think about using the car to take a trip away from home. I bought jump starters and now take one with me every time I consider driving this car. God forbid it drains outs before I get back to the house to recharge it, which has happened and ended up bigging a stranger to jump start my car. It is a shame that this reputable company can sell a car that has this problem, that could be easily fixed which seems to be not...

The clock spring that controls the steering wheel, horn and other electrical accessories doesn’t work. This put my life and family’s lives at risk. This is a known issue for Subarus 2015-2019. There’s multiple videos online, I have spoken to multiple owners personally that have encountered the same issue. I spoke to the Subaru dealer and they said due to no recall has been issued for the vin number of my vehicle they can’t replace it and it cost about $1,000 dls. We need the NHTSA to step in and ask Subaru to issue a recall to start replacing the defective units at no cost to the owner.
#11622856 |
Horn became intermittent with failure related to steering wheel position, then failed altogether. No horn is a safety issue. We replaced the 'SRC SET 83196AJO4', AKA 'clockspring', the wiring assembly that connects the AIRBAG as well as the HORN, and all steering wheel controls.

Been having issues with my Subaru Outback dying for years now. I’ve gone through 5 battery’s the last 6 years. No amount of driving seems to fix the issue, the replacement batteries only work for so long until it gets cold or I don’t drive my car for a week and suddenly it dies. I believe there is a parasitic drain somewhere, I can’t figure out what. I have nothing obstructing the hatch locking mechanism, I turn all my lights off and air system off before turn turning the car off. It’s becoming a serious issue, I have to jump my car almost everyday or every other day and am driving for over 40 minutes a day. Subaru has been unhelpful and I’m now not trusting of their help.

Ignition inhibitor switch causing car to stay in neutral, fried the starter and battery 8 months after getting a brand new transmission under subaru warrenty

#1. I replaced the battery in June of 2022 after all the dash warning lights came on. My eyesight safety feature was rendered in operative. After the battery was replaced, all the warning lights eventually went out. In July of 2023 the same scenario happened again. I returned to Advance Auto retailer and the store manager checked the battery. She replaced the battery with a new one of greater cold cranking amps. she was most knowledgeable and extraordinarily gracious. I asked her to check the alternator for proper function and was told it was functioning as it should. #2. On June 07, 2023, I took the automobile in for service: oil and filter change and brake pads and rotors on all four wheels. My Subaru had 68,482 miles on this date. The technician (who previously was employed by a local Subaru dealership) noticed that the engine was leaking oil and...

There's a problem in a part called (clock spring/roll connector) that is responsible for the horn on steering wheel. It affects almost all Subaru models, like Outback, Forester, Legacy... I've verified it in a mechanic shop, and after all the tests of fuses, horn, and everything. They say the problem is the clock spring, a part that goes after the air bag and costs around $130 plus service ($150 minimum) to change. Then I research on internet and found out it's a very common problem with a lot of videos on YouTube of people having the same issue and a lot of comments there of more people complaining about it that it should have a recall cause it's a security part. I couldn't use my horn when another driver almost hit me, that's how I figured out that my horn died. Those are just some of the videos with this...

The battery has been in need of replacement at least every year if not twice a year since purchase. This has led to issues with the rear hatch and other fuses being blown.
#11512993 |
Oil consumption issues. The oil is burning more then it should. Oil light would come after 2 to 3 more after an oil change. The dealership has been notified and is working on ordering new parts for the engine. Replacing the small block of the engine. Had less the 100k miles when this problem accured. Electrical issues. The battery is being drained after the car is turned off. Car would not start in the morning and need to be jumped. Additionally, battery eventually dies and needs to be replaced. Dealership has been notified.

The horn in my car quit working about a month ago. I have checked the fuses and relay involved in the horn fiction. I have also tested the horns themselves and they are working. All signs point to the clock spring in the steering column being bad.

I am on my 3rd battery since May 2015 when the Outback was purchased in El Cajon, California. There have been multiple instances when I prepare to venture out and am unable to as the result of a dead battery. In every instance there was not an obvious instigating factor such as a light inadvertently left on. This situation is extremely disruptive resulting in my belief that I have an unreliable vehicle that has caused me to miss appointments and meetings. There is also a significant monetary loss in that this is a known and well- publicized issue that will render me unable to recoup market value upon sale of the vehicle. '

I have had to replace battery sooner than it should have. Also, it seems to be causing an electrical issue with the computer board where all the dashboard warnings are blanking. I have been disconnecting the battery and reconnecting to reset the computer board.
#11489640 |
1st time battery died when car was not in use at least for three days, back in Jan 2022. was replaced. on 10/11/22, after the car was not in use for 4 days, 8 month old battery was died, had to replace, again. Recently received a Subaru Battery settlement letter of a design defect that cuase battery drain.
#11486438 |
I am reporting this deficiency as it is related to: Subaru Battery Drain Products Liability Litigation, No. 1:20-cv-03095-JHR-MJS Deficiency: Battery will discharge to an unusable degree within a relatively short amount of time (10 to 20 min.) when any power is used (radio, cabin lights) while engine is off. This has happened 4 times since my purchase of my new 2015 Subaru Outback. I now carry an emergency battery jump starter power unit so as to not be stranded. As the amount of power used is so small there is no warning from the car's system that the discharge is causing such a power drain as to make starting the car not possible. Although I have been contacted by the above class action suit sponsors I am mostly interested in Subaru fixing the electrical system from this obvious deficiency.

On multiple occasions I have had the tailgate open and the light has drained the battery to the point that it needs a jump start or a battery charging to get it to start back up. On one occasion the tailgate was only left open for 30 minutes and the car would not start due to the battery being drained from it. The battery is in perfect condition as it would start fine any other time.

Replaced 2 new batteries in 6 months. Batteries went totally dead. Batteries wer replaced by independent shop. Dealer changed battery to a subaru oem battery, checked system, said everything ok. Read about complaints about subaru batteries going dead months apart. Want to find out if there is a defect in subarus.

Inoperative horn. Traced to continuity failure in steering roll connector, part #83111AL13. No indication of fault and no other apparent continuity failure in adjoining wire paths.

Battery repeatedly drains when vehicle not used. Have replaced multiple batteries. Alternator checked and functioning.
#11470330 |
On multiple occasions the car battery was drained and required a jump to start. Battery replaced less than 5 months ago. Service technicians unable to identify problem with alternator or parasitic drain.
#11468996 |
The electrical system failed to go into sleep mode after parking the car. The battery was totally drained by morning causing us to find someone to use jumper cables to juice it up again.
#11464224 |
Repeated battery drain, causing premature failure of the battery. Frequent replacement of the battery and reduced reliability have increased the cost of ownership. It has occurred multiple times over the duration of ownership.
#11462034 |
My battery has continually been dead, despite replacing the battery twice. I just had to call roadside assistance last weekend on Saturday. Yesterday (Sunday), the battery was dead again - 8 days later. This happened several times when I first got my car, and Subaru replaced the battery, as the car was still under warranty. I have since replaced the battery twice, and am still having the same issues. This is extremely frustrating, considering one of the main reasons I bought this car was for the reliability.
#11459533 |
On multiple occassions, I have been unable to start my Outback b/c the battery is dead. Note that I have not left any lights on, doors open etc. and, when I have taken my car in for routine services, the battery is deemed to be in proper working condition. In addition to being extremely inconvenient when I cannot use my car as needed, this is a safety issue. What if I was not in a safe location when my car wouldn't start? What if I needed to use my car to get a pet to urgent medical care? When I purchased my Outback, I was confident in the Subaru brand for reliability. However, it no longer consider my Outback, or Subaru as a brand, reliable when I can't count on my car starting when I need it to. The date I provided in the additional details of this form is...

Our 2015 Subaru Outback has had 4 batteries in 4 years. After some research, a parasitic battery drain issue is common with this year Outback and other Subaru models. Some sites call out the Subaru CAN network as the culprit. Whatever the case, we have had the car to Subaru who changed firmware ostensibly to provide more charging at lower rpm. After that software change was made the problem has apparently gotten worse. Now the car's battery will drain in 2 days of use (the current battery is 4 weeks old). There are numerous complaints about this on line and the common opinion is that Subaru is not addressing the issue.
#11454195 |
There is some kind of electrical malfunction or drainage that the battery drains even when car is turned off. Replacement of new battery results in the same problem after a few days
#11451181 |
The car regularly drains the battery. We are the original owners and have had to purchase 3 car batteries thus far. The car does not provide any warning messages or report any issues. Every time the battery has been drained it happens without explanation, over a dozen times since we’ve owned the car. We’ve always had the batteries inspected, and they’ve been in good contention with life left in them, just drained, needing a recharge. Unfortunately, the car counties to drain the battery, leaving me stranded, including at night away from home. The details for the incident I will be providing below will be for the most recent, this morning.
#11449150 |
Battery drain over night, dead battery in the morning. Alternator output normal, terminal post clean and battery will charge with external charger. Battery is less than 2 year old
#11446526 |
The battery has gone completely dead 3 times over 6 years since I purchased this car new. The battery dies, like clockwork, every 2 years. I have purchased 2 new replacement batteries so far on 5/16/2017 (mileage 25,895) and 2/5/2019 (mileage 40,017). The third instance just occurred 1/5/2021 and I have not yet had a chance to take the car to a shop to determine whether the current jump-started battery will reliably hold a charge. Clearly, there is a problem in the Subaru electical system causing a constant drain on their batteries. A quick internet search uncovers that this has been a common occurrence among many Subaru owners over several model years.
#11446399 |
Battery repeatedly fails every 2 years since new vehicle purchased. New vehicle purchased in 2015, had to replace battery in 2017 and replaced again in 2019. It is now Jan 2022 and battery had insufficient charge to start car. I have now had to purchase a $110 battery charger to hopefully maintain the charge on my battery. There were no accessories left on or other unusual circumstances that would cause the battery to drain. The vehicle is driven regularly and kept in a garage. There appears to be an ongoing problem with the vehicle routinely prematurely draining the battery over time.
#11445165 |
On four occasions over the past five months my car needed a jump start for no apparent reason. I had a new Subaru battery installed last July, and a check up at a Subaru dealer last month which found no problems with the battery or alternator. I recently read about a battery drainage problem that other owners of this model have been experiencing as well.
#11443769 |
Repeated dead batteries. Replaced OEM battery in year 2, new battery also comes up dead regularly. There is clearly a parasitic battery drain happening. Burning oil, this car burns more oil than any car I have ever owned. Subaru claims it is within specification, but their specification is 1 quart between changes, this is a ridiculous claim in 2021. Heat shield and exhaust noise. Always a new noise or exhaust leak. Lights are not adequate for country driving, it is dangerous.

Our car has electrical / battery problems. It frequently will not start on its own. We have to jump start the battery about once a month, sometimes more frequently. The primary driver commutes 120 miles at least once a week (60 miles each way), thus we should not have issues with battery drain, but we do. We replaced the battery 1 year ago and the problem still remains. The battery also drains quite quickly, for example, last week we had the back lift gate open for 15 - 20 minutes while we were in and out of the house packing up the car with all the things I needed for a work event. When we were ready to go, the car wouldn't start. This has happened to us multiple times camping in the past. Because we have had so many problems with our car starting, we keep a small battery...

My 2015 Subaru Outback has continually experienced random battery drain. I have replaced the battery 3 times since purchasing the car from a dealership in 2017. In all cases, there was no advanced warning indicating that the battery was low, the car had been driven regularly with an average amount of mileage and no lights were left on nor was there extreme weather. Most recently (11/7/2021) the tailgate was up with the car off for 30-45 minutes. It was jump started, we made it home and the next morning it had zero power. That last battery was purchased in April of 2021. The car is regularly maintained by the dealer and/or a certified mechanic.
#11435250 |
On multiple occasions the battery completely dies over night for no apparent reason and with no warning. Nothing that draws power was left on. This is a hazard as we can be stuck someplace with no way to start our car. The battery and alternator always check out as normal (by local mechanic), yet it keeps dying to the point that there are no dash lights, horn, emergency blinker or anything else functioning. Most recently I can't even jump start the Outback. Some design defect, (electronic/ computer) is causing the vehicles' battery to drain quickly which renders the car inoperable.
#11434465 |
This car has repeatedly drained the battery when completely off. I have replaced the battery thinking it was a faulty battery, only to have this occur repeatedly with a new battery. I am certain the doors are shut, lights are off, car is off and locked and nothing I have left on is in anyway draining the battery. I have even experienced this when driving the car for an hour, parking it for 30 minutes and coming back to a dead battery. The battery drops to 5v and car won’t start. The battery does charge and holds 13.5v. This is not an error with the battery as I have replaced the battery.
#11433147 |
I have had to change my car battery three times in four years. A couple times it seemed like my battery went bad soon after having service on my car even though my battery tested okay and given a green symbol. The last date I had to replace the battery is below.
#11431457 |
Bought 2016 model December 29, 2015. Battery consistently drains. It has had at least 3 replacement batteries in 5 years. Car has less than 46k miles on it. Had to get jump started twice within a two week period, with a battery from February of 2020. Battery issues 3/2018 26k miles 2/2020 37k miles 8/2021 45k miles 9/2021 45k miles

i will be purchasing my 4th battery, this seems to be an issue people are having with this 2015 outback. I maintain my car and garage store it and I continue to have dead batteries that need to be replaced, I am not leaving any interior or exterior lights on either.
#11429709 |
I have to replace my battery 1-2 x year, possibly due to Parasitic draw. No lights have been left on, nor anything electrical when the car is shut off. Between batteries, I often have to jump my car to start it. I have been stranded places and I am in constant fear my car will not start.
#11427135 |
My vehicle was purchased in September 2014. Approximately the night of March 9, 2017 my daughter apparently turned on a dome light, which remained on the rest of the night. My car had approximately 45k miles on it. The next day I attempted to start the car, nothing happened. The battery was so dead that even connecting to another vehicle for 20 minutes resulted in no change. I purchased a new battery on 3/10/2017. On 7/10/2021 with approximately 100,000 miles I was at an airport for pickup. I turned my car off upon arrival and waited for 30 - 40 minutes with the key in the ignition. I think that resulted in some lights remaining on. When I attempted to start my car to depart the airport it gave an indication of attempting to start but there was not enough power to facilitate the action. I needed to briefly connect...

Bought this car used with low miles in 2019 from a Subaru dealership. We have had intermittent issues dating back to late 2019, where returning to the car find that the battery is dead when we went to start it. It usually happens when the vehicle was left for 4 hours or more, although not always. After reading several reports of the same issue, we are going to try a new, larger battery.
#11425823 |
I have a parasitic drain on my battery and I have replaced the battery 3 times. It seems my battery is not the issue, but I am constantly stranded on the road and the dealership just replaces the battery. This last replacement I did at a separate shop on 5/10/2021 because my battery needed to be replaced and I thought putting in a different battery would help. Today (7/21/2021), my car will not start again. This shouldn't happen with a new battery and I don't think it's right that Subaru is not doing anything about this issue. It started happening within the first 3 years I owned this vehicle, when it was under warranty. Their solution was to replace the battery and not actually fix the real issue. This is not okay. I drive this car regularly and there is no reason why my battery should die constantly.
#11425364 |
On 4 occasions the car battery has unexpectedly gone so low that it could not be started. On the second occasion (January 2022) the battery was replaced. On the third occasion (July 14, 2021) the battery was again replaced. On the fourth occasion (July 18, 2021) the battery was completely dead. It was necessary to use a mechanical key to enter the vehicle so that the hood could be raised. The battery has been recharged and a report will be made to the dealer for the second time tomorrow.

Excessive battery drain from open back hatch while parked and engine off. Having my back liftgate open while my engine was off for a 30 minute period drained my battery so that I could not start my vehicle. Had not my friends been there to jump me I would have been without transportation miles from home. No warning light was given by the vehicle. Others with this vehicle have had similar issues and it is an easy issue to find complaints about. A service center has not been contacted yet but I plan on speaking with my dealership soon. This problem blindsided me completely.
#11424585 |
With a relatively new battery, my car would not start. I had the rear lift gate open, but lights turned off, for about an hour while packing for a trip and when I went to start the car it was completely dead and I had to jump it to get it started again. This also happened a few months prior while leaving the tailgate up for about 30 minutes to get some things out of the car. Both times the only lights that were on were the mirror lights when I approached the car

1. My battery failed, so I replaced it. I didn’t keep the failed one. 2. Problem started while driving w/ a handicapped, elderly passenger in remote rural area at night. Help at least 1/2-hr. away. No open garages. Frightening. 3. AAA confirmed. 4. AAA inspected. 5. My Check Engine light came on, Cruise Control stopped working. Pulled over, ck’d manual, nothing noted about battery, no Battery warning light. Car started up, drove home very slowly, stopping occasionally. Next morning, car wouldn’t start, called AAA to take to mechanic (charge $150 to check system). There was no previous warning that battery was losing power. AAA found battery problem. No engine problem. Replaced. No more lights. Very disappointed that much worry could have been avoided.

3 years after the vehicle purchase the OEM battery died. Replaced it with a well reviewed local brand. It is almost 3 years since the replacement battery and the Subaru service rep said the battery is dying. I fear there is something wrong with the electrical system which damages the batteries over 3 years. I will be replacing the battery again, but what if 3 years later this one dies too? What if, because of the age of the car, the battery dies earlier? When I am on a road trip with family? I feel it is related to https://www.torquenews.com/1084/subaru-battery-lawsuit-new-information-outback-and-ascent-owners-should-know
