In addition, the thermostat gauge indicated that the engine was overheating. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a cracked head gasket. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the repair was not covered under warranty because the mileage was over the limit. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The contact pulled over and let the vehicle cool down. The contact later drove the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and found that the "relay" switch needed to be replaced. The mechanic also observed an engine oil leak and noticed that the head gasket had been blown and needed to be replaced. Additionally, the mechanic noticed that the bolts that secured the head gasket were improperly torqued down and had damaged the head and needed to be re-threaded. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
