THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V438000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) AND STATED THAT THE PART NEEDED WAS UNAVAILABLE TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. UPDATED 04/14/16*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE PART WAS FINALLY REPLACED AFTER 12 MONTHS. UPDATED 04/19/16. *JB
I HAVE EXPERIENCED 2 INCIDENTS OF MY VEHICLE ENGINE TURNING OFF WHILE DRIVING AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL LETTER I RECEIVED 4 MONTHS AGO. TO DATE, EACH TIME I CALL THE DEALERSHIP, I'M TOLD THE PARTS ARE NOT IN, YET THE RECALL LETTER STATES THAT IF I HAVE THE CAR FIXED, I CAN SUBMIT A RECEIPT, WHICH INFERS THAT THERE IS A PART AVAILABLE. WITH PASSENGERS IN VEHICLE VERY SCARY. HAVE SPENT MORE THAN $4000 @ DEALER @ & MANUFACTURER INVOLVED. EXHAUST MANIFOLDS LEAK, POTENTIALLY INTRODUCING EXHAUST GASES, INCLUDING CARBON MONOXIDE, INTO THE PASSENGER AREA. I INITIALLY TOOK MY VEHICLE TO LITHIA DODGE IN SANTA FE, NM TO REPORT AN EXHAUST LEAK THAT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE AND WAS TO BE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. THEY ONLY REPAIRED THE PASSENGER SIDE WITHOUT APPARENTLY PERFORMING A LEAK CHECK. THE FIX FOR THIS IS TO REPLACE THE OEM GASKET WITH ONE THAT INCORPORATES METAL TO APPARENTLY COMPENSATE FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE DISSIMILAR METALS OF THE HEAD/EXHAUST MANIFOLD. SINCE THERE IS A DEFECT, THE GASKETS LEAK, AND THE UNEVEN EXPANSION CAUSES THE BOLTS/STUDS TO BREAK, EXACERBATING THE PROBLEM. AFTER THE REPAIR THE SOUND SEEMED SIMILAR BUT I ASSUMED IT MUST BE INJECTOR OR VALVE/LIFTER NOISE. RECENTLY I HAD MY TRANSMISSION SERVICED BY A LOCAL SHOP AND THEY NOTED THAT I HAD AN EXHAUST LEAK. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY AFTER STALLING. THE FAILURE RECURRED SPORADICALLY WHEN DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS. SEPT 2011 I WAS PASSING A TRANSIT BUS ON THE WAY TO WORK AND AS I STARTED TO PULL BACK INTO MY OWN LANE THE JEEP QUIT AGAIN. NO WARNINGS, IT JUST QUIT. CAR ACTS LIKE IF I SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL BUT GEAR SELECTED IS STILL DRIVE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES AND ENGINE RESPONDS TO ACCELERATION BUT NO MOVEMENT IS GIVEN BY TRANSMISSION. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE WOULD ONLY OCCUR WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS AT STANDSTILL. THE THROTTLE AND ENGINE CONTROL MODULE WAS REPAIRED TWO MONTHS PRIOR TO THE MOST RECENT FAILURE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER INSPECTION OR REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,099 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
UNINTENDED ENGINE ACCELERATION / SURGE. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE 5.7 LITER HEMI ENGINE IN A 2006 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SUDDENLY SURGED WHEN STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS. MAXIMUM BRAKES WERE APPLIED AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS PLACED IN NEUTRAL TO PREVENT THE JEEP FROM GOING INTO TRAFFIC. AFTER THE TRANSMISSION WAS PLACED IN NEUTRAL THE ENGINE RPM WENT AS HIGH 4500 RPM (NORMAL ENGINE RPM AT IDLE IN GEAR IS ABOUT 700 RPM). ON BOTH OCCASIONS THE JEEP WAS BROUGHT TO A JEEP DEALERSHIP TO DIAGNOSIS THE PROBLEM. THE MAINTENANCE TECHNICIANS WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY FAULT WITH THE VEHICLE (NO FAULT CODES OR ANY ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR). THIS BEHAVIOR COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT THE RESULTS IN SERIOUS INJURIES AND OR DEATH TO INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHO STATED THAT IT WAS PROBABLY CAUSED BY THE GASOLINE CAP. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS A MISFIRE IN THE ENGINE BUT THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE WHERE. THE CONTACT THEN STATED THAT AFTER A FEW MONTHS, A CONSTANT CLOUD OF SMOKE EMITTED FROM THE TAIL PIPE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT ANTIFREEZE WAS MIXING WITH THE ENGINE OIL. THE CONTACT CONSULTED THE DEALERSHIP WHO STATED THAT THE ANTIFREEZE COULD NOT HAVE CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY THE LOCAL MECHANIC. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 43,800. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 42,000.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. AFTER STALLING, THE ENGINE WAS EASILY RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A DEALER WHO DUPLICATED THE PROBLEM, BUT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE ENGINE STALLING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED.
