The contact owns a 1999 Honda Civic. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the vehicle lost electrical power inadvertently. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and continued driving. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring. Additionally, the contact stated that the instrument panel lights were no longer illuminated while starting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the ignition switch was corroded at the contact point. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and several other unknown dealers were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall related to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately...
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 HONDA CIVIC. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE RECURRED EVERYDAY WHEN DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 196,000.
IT BEGAN I THINK IN FEBRUARY 2012 GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. MY 1999 HONDA CIVIC TURNED OFF THEN BACK ON WHICH JERKED THE CAR. IT DID NOT DO IT AGAIN UNTIL WEEKS LATER. THEN IT WOULD BEGIN TO ACTUALLY TURN OFF WHILE DRIVER WITHOUT WARNING. BUT THEN AGAIN IT WOULD ONLY DO IT A TIME OR 2.... THEN NOT FOR SEVERAL WEEKS LATER (WHICH BY THEN I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT IT). IT DID THIS ON AND OFF FOR THE REST OF 2012.... BUT WOULD ALWAYS START RIGHT BACK UP.... EVEN PUTTING IT IN NEUTRAL WHILE MOVING AND STARTING IT..... THEN PUTTING IT BACK IN GEAR WITHOUT HARDLY SLOWING DOWN. BUT THE LAST FEW MONTHS, ESPECIALLY IN JULY (2013).... IT BEGAN CUTTING OFF MORE OFTEN AND WOULD BE HARDER TO START. THE OIL, BATTERY, FUEL PUMP, AND ALTERNATOR WERE ALL WORKING PROPERLY AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENTS. WHAT I JUST LEARNED FROM YOUR SITE WAS THAT MY CAR HAD AN IGNITION SWITCH RECALL, WHICH HONDA FAILED TO NOTIFY ME ABOUT SUCH DANGER. HAD I BEEN ON THE FREEWAY, I COULD HAVE BEEN IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
