Defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTOR HOMES BUILT ON SPARTAN CHASSIS. WELDS HAVE CRACKED ON THE FRAME PLATE WHERE THE HITCH TUBE WAS WELDED ON EACH SIDE OF THE FRAME.

Consequence: IN THE EVENT THE WELDS WOULD FAIL, THE HITCH AND THE TOW VEHICLE COULD BE SEPARATED FROM THE MOTOR HOME, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THESE WELDS AND, IF NECESSARY, REWELD THE HITCH TO THE FRAME PLATE.

THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF REASONS THAT CAUSED THE FIRE IN MY MOTOR HOME. 1.HALDEX "PUREAIR PLUS" AIR DRYER THRU A DEFECT IN A FIBERBOARD CONNECTOR BROKE & SHORTED 12 VOLT TO GROUND. 2.SPARTAN MOTORS INSTALLED A 20 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PROTECT THE AIR DRYER. HALDEX RECOMMENTS A 10 AMP FUSE. THE SHORT CAUSED THE AIR DRYER CONNECTER TO OVERHEAT & START THE FIRE. 3.SPARTAN MOTORS USED A WIRING HARNESS DESIGNED FOR A LARGER MOTOR HOME & BUNDLED EXCESS WITH AIR DRYER CONNECTOR. THE PLASTIC USED TO INCASE THE WIRING HARNESS IS VERY FLAMMABLE & CAUSED THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT INSULATION WHICH IS ALSO VERY FLAMMABLE TO STREAD THE FIRE OVER THE ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. *AK
FUEL FILTER/WATER SEPARATOR IS MOUNTED ON CHASSIS DIRECTLY BEHIND RIGHT REAR WHEEL, EXPOSED TO FLYING GRAVEL & ROCKS FROM ROAD. (PLASTIC FUEL/WATER SEPARATOR IS ATTACHED TO BOTTOM OF FILTER). ROCK THROWN FROM WHEEL ON GRAVEL ROAD CAUSED PLASTIC TO SHATTER MARKING ENGINE QUIT AND FUEL OIL SPILL ON ROAD. AIR BRAKE FILTER/AIR DRYER IS ALSO MOUNTED IN SAME EXPOSED LOCATION, AND COULD FAIL IN SAME WAY, RESULTING IN LOSS OF BRAKES. THESE COMPONENTS SHOULD BE RELOCATED TO A SAFER LOCATION AND/OR PROTECTED BY A SHIELD OR ROCK DEFLECTOR. THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM.
