While driving on the interstate, the automated front shade system failed. The shade unrolled instantaneously blocking the entire front windshield. The driver and passenger were able to get a hold of it and lift it out of the way to regain view but this took several seconds during which the driver had no view of the road, lanes or vehicles surrounding us. The driver had to take attention from the road and a hand off the wheel to find and lift the shade out of the way. This put us at risk and all drivers surrounding us at risk. If we had been on a road with a curve or if there had been more traffic the outcome could have been far worse. The system should have safeguards to prevent this type of failure.
