Defect: COUNTRY COACH HAS REPORTED THAT THE TOYO 275/70R M102Z TIRES ON CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES ARE DEFECTIVE AND COULD FAIL UNEXPECTEDLY.

Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THESE TIRES WITH MICHELIN 275/70R XZA2 TIRES. THE FEDERAL TIRE LABELS WILL ALSO BE REPLACED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 8, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT COUNTRY COACH AT 1-800-547-8015.

Defect: CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 120, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES OTHER THAN PASSENGER CARS." THESE MOTOR HOMES WERE ERRONEOUSLY ASSIGNED INADEQUATE COLD TIRE INFLATION PRESSURES AND INADEQUATE AXLE WEIGHT RATINGS ON THE FRONT AND/OR REAR AXLES AS A RESULT OF MATHEMATICAL MISCALCULATIONS.

Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE PREMATURE TIRE TREAD WEAR OR TIRE FAILURE DURING NORMAL DRIVING. THE PREMATURE TIRE TREAD WEAR OR TIRE FAILURE COULD LEAD TO A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Defect: CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 120, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES OTHER THAN PASSENGER CARS." THESE VEHICLES HAVE AN INEQUITABLE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION BETWEEN THE FRONT LEFT AND RIGHT TIRES ON THE FRONT AXLE. THIS WEIGHT INEQUITY CAN CAUSE THE LEFT FRONT TIRE WEIGHT RATING TO BE EXCEEDED.

Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE PREMATURE FRONT TIRE TREAD WEAR OR TIRE FAILURE DURING NORMAL DRIVING. THE PREMATURE TIRE TREAD WEAR OR TIRE FAILURE COULD LEAD TO A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL.

Defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTOR HOMES. THESE MOTOR HOMES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 121, "AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS." THESE VEHICLES WERE ASSIGNED AN INADEQUATE FRONT AXLE WEIGHT RATING (FAWR). AS A CONSEQUENCE, THE FRONT BRAKE CANISTERS AND SLACK ADJUSTERS DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE STANDARD REQUIREMENTS.

Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES DURING BRAKING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

100 MILES WEST OF PHOENIX AND TRAVELING AT 65 MPH, I SUDDENLY LOST ALL STEERING ASSIST. IF I HAD BEEN ON A CURVE, I WOULD HAVE GONE OFF THE ROAD OR INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. 29,000 LBS OF MOTORHOME CAN BE HANDLED WITHOUT POWER STEERING IF YOU HAVE PLENTY OF MUSCLE AND ARE READY FOR IT. I ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THE RADIATOR COOLING FANS WERE INOPERATIVE. COACH NET HAD ME TOWED TO A SHOP IN PHOENIX WHERE IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE HYDRAULIC PUMP SPLINES THAT ENGAGE THE POWER TAKE-OFF WERE DISINTEGRATED. I CALLED GILLIG AND THEY SAID THAT A FEW OF THEIR CHASSIS HAD BEEN THE VICTIM OF A COMPLACENT EMPLOYEE WHO FAILED TO APPLY SPLINE GREASE AT THE TIME OF ASSEMBLY. THEY WERE NICE ENOUGH TO SEND A NEW POWER TAKE-OFF AND HYDRAULIC PUMP AT NO CHARGE [ABOUT $500 WORTH]. IT COST ME ABOUT $500 LABOR. IT WORRIES ME ABOUT HOW MANY MORE VEHICLES WITH GILLIG CHASSIS THAT HAVE THE SAME SITUATION ARE OUT THERE WITH THE POTENTIAL OF SUDDENLY BECOMING AN OUT OF CONTROL ROLLING MISSILE. MINE IS A 1997 MODEL AND HAD 32,000 MILES ON IT WHEN IT HAPPENED. YOU GILLIG CHASSIS OWNERS OUT THERE MIGHT WANT HAVE THIS CHECKED OUT.
