Recall 02V052000 — POWER TRAIN:CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

Defect: CERTAIN MEDIUM DUTY TILT CAB TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH THE CLUTCH MASTER-CYLINDER PUSHROD END THAT ATTACHES TO THE CLUTCH PEDAL PIN CAN WEAR PREMATURELY. THE FIRST NOTICEABLE EFFECT OF THIS WEAR COULD BE THE CLUTCH PEDAL NOT RETURNING COMPLETELY TO THE FULL-UP POSITION.
Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE FAST-IDLE ENGINE SPEED CONTROL MAY NOT FUNCTION. IF THE CLUTCH MASTER-CYLINDER PUSHROD END WEARS SUFFICIENTLY TO ALLOW THE ATTACHING END TO BEND OPEN OR BREAK OFF, THE PEDAL PIN WOULD DETACH FROM THE CLUTCH ROD LINK AND THE CLUTCH WOULD ENGAGE. IF CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT OCCURRED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED, WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING AND THE TRANSMISSION IN GEAR, AND IF THE BRAKES WERE NOT APPLIED, THE VEHICLE COULD MOVE FORWARD IF THE TRANSMISSION WERE IN A FORWARD GEAR, OR REARWARD IF THE TRANSMISSION WERE IN A REVERSE GEAR.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW CLUTCH MASTER-CYLINDER ASSEMBLY AND CLUTCH PEDAL ASSEMBLY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 23, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY...

FIRST OF ALL, I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO PUT IN THE "# OF FAILURES" FIELD SINCE THE PROBLEM OCCURS MANY TIMES EACH DAY AND WE JUST BOUGHT THE VEHICLE LESS THAN A MONTH AGO, SO OBVIOUSLY IT'S GOING TO OCCUR THOUSANDS OF TIMES UNLESS FIXED. WE BOUGHT OUR 1999 CHEVY TAHOE THE END OF AUGUST THIS YEAR FROM A PRIVATE SELLER. WHEN WE PICKED THE VEHICLE UP, WE WERE COMING TO A STOP AT A STOP SIGN ON A CITY STREET AND FELT THE ANTI LOCK BREAKS KICK IN. THIS HAS OCCURRED SINCE THE DAY WE GOT THE VEHICLE AND CONTINUES TO OCCUR EACH TIME WE DRIVE IT. I LOOKED UP RECALLS ON OUR VEHICLE AND SAW THAT ONE HAD JUST BEEN ISSUED FOR UNWANTED ANTI LOCK BREAK SYSTEM ACTIVATION, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING TO US. I LOOKED INTO THE RECALL FURTHER ONLY TO FIND THAT 14 "RUST BELT" STATES ARE INCLUDING IN THE RECALL AND WE- HERE IN MINNESOTA WHERE OUR CARS RUST FROM ALL THE SALT WE USE TO HELP WITH ALL THE SNOW WE GET EVERY YEAR- ARE NOT CONSIDERED TO BE A "RUST BELT" STATE. I CALLED GM/CHEVROLET TO DISCUSS THE FACT THAT WE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING THAT THE RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR AND THAT WE ARE NOT INCLUDED, THEY SAID THEIR IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT SINCE WE ARE NOT ONE OF THE 14 STATES. SO NOW, I AM FILING A COMPLAINT WITH YOU HOPING TO GET SOMEWHERE. I THINK THEY SHOULD BE INCLUDING A LOT MORE STATES THEN THE 14 THEY CHOSE NOW. *NM
FAILURE TO BRAKE HARD ENOUGH OR BRAKES NOT FULLY RESPONDING DURING PANIC SITUATION. PROCEEDING IN VEHICLE AT 50-60 MPH FOLLOWING BEHIND A CAR TOWING A SMALL FISHING BOAT. TRAFFIC AHEAD IN HOWARD COUNTY STOPPED SUDDENLY & CAN AHEAD BRAKED HARD. I ALSO THEN BRAKED HARD. THE WHEELS NEVER LOCKED UP, NOR WENT INTO ANTI LOCK SOUNDS. THE BACK OF THE BOAT WAS HIT BY MY VEHICLE. THIS WAS ABOUT TWO YRS AGO IN SUMMER TIME. PUSHING HARD DID NOT RESULT IN PROPER BRAKING OF VEHICLE. NOW, SAME VEHICLE AT ABOUT 58K MILES HAS DEVELOPED A LACK OF BRAKING AT UNDER 10 MPH THAT COULD VERY WELL BE RELATED. WHEN BRAKING ABOVE 10 MPH, THE SPEED DROPS TO 10 MPH, THEN THE BRAKES GIVE WAY FOR A FEW SECONDS & THEN RECOVER IN PULSES WITH SOUNDS. ITS NOT PROPER BRAKING/STOPPING MODE FOR ABS! THIS IS ABOUT A CHEVY TAHOE. THE INCIDENT BOXES BELOW ARE BASED ON THE PAST ACCIDENT, NOT THE PRESENT BRAKE ISSUE. THE DATE SHOWN IS ONLY AN APPROXIMATE. I HAVE BOTH MY REPAIR BILL TO MY FRONT END DAMAGE & PHOTOS. NONE OF WHICH IS RELATED TO THE BRAKE ISSUE! *NM
