My recently purchased 2008 was taken to the local chevy dealer for gas fumes in the garage. The technician reported "The smell is coming from the sending unit on the driver side. There was fuel dripping down the side of the tank and the tank was wet. So the sending unit needs to be replaced" The car has only 16,427 miles on it and has been garage kept. I believe that leaking fuel is a very serious safety issue and that the now expired special service bulletin 150682 should have been a mandatory recall.

Fuel sending unit in gas tank behind the drivers side is leaking gas making it impossible to park the car in the garage. There is a great possibility of fire due to this issue. No, I have not taken it to the dealer as of today but I am going to schedule it. No. No.

cracked fuel pump housing causing vapors to vent out possibly causing a fire if stored extended periods of time indoors, and if crack is big enough fuel will drip down the back of the fuel tank onto the exhaust and possibly starting a vehicle fire

Transmission gets stuck in park position and I am unable to shift it into any other gear. Unable to move the car if it's in a dangerous location.

Bought this vehicle recently and filled it up with fuel and fumes overtook the cabin area and some leaked out the top of the tank down through the tank support. From the research I have done, this is a common problem that Chevy has ignored. The parts are too expensive to just replace everything with new.

There is a strong smell of gas in the passenger compartment and a very strong smell of gas gas on the drivers side near the rear tire. The Chevy dealer has confirmed the the gas smell is due to a know defect where the fuel pump develops cracks in the housing because of the poor quality plastic used. The dealer estimates that it will cost between $3,000 to $4,000 to repair. This is a very dangerous problem. I'm afraid with the very strong smell of gas that an electric spark might cause the car to explode or when it's stored inside cause a vehicle and structure fire. Why has the NHTSA not made GM do a recall for this defect. It is a very serious problem. Owners of any C6 corvette are sitting on a time bomb and their life is in danger. GM has already admitted that it is...

This car has suffered a known defect that causes fuel to leak out of the tank when the tank is more than 1/2 full. Unfortunately, the leak in my vehicle occurred outside the window that GM arbitrarily set up. (10 years after vehicle put in service or 120,000 miles whichever comes first. My vehicle is a 2008 with 94,000 miles and the problem occurred recently and after GM's window. Therefore, GM will not fix this leaking fuel tank and correct a potentially life-threatening issue. The problem is that this is a serious safety issue with strong fumes inside the cars cabin and strong fumes outside the vehicle with leaking fuel on the tank. The fumes and the leaking fuel are both extreme fire issues. This is a known issue and a known condition that could cause fire and loss of life. NHTSA needs to issue an immediate safety recall to...

Gas smells when tank is over half full it’s the plastic fuel system on to of tank is starting to crack and I was reading they have been recalled before but has gone off and this is danger and might cause a fire with the saddle bags across the back and only 30,700 miles on car

I just bought a 2008 Chevy Corvette convertible and parked in the garage. The next morning the garage has distinct smell of gas throughout the garage. If my heater to the house would have kicked on the house would have blown up. This is a safety issue which should be addressed by Chevy. After researching the issue, it seems to be a common issue, which should be a recall. Even after moving it outside, when I get in the car it smells of gas.

After refilling my car with gas and parking it in my garage, I noticed that fuel was actively LEAKING from the bottom of my car!@#! Within a few minutes, fuel was pooling under my car on the garage floor. I immediately moved it outside and ran the car for an hour to use up enough fuel so that it was no longer actively leaking. Unfortunately, there still remains an extremely strong fuel smell, even inside the car when driving. With this fuel smell there are strong vapors in my garage. I have to park the car outside all the time, otherwise my garage will be filled with gas vapors immediately (kind of like an air-fuel bomb). The dealer tells me that it will cost $3000-4000 to fix it. This is a HUGE safety issue and should be covered under a factory recall!!!!

Hello NHTSA, Fuel leaks from drivers side fuel tank. I see fuel tracks down side of tank, so conclude fuel is leaking from top of tank or from fuel pump. Fuel components are plastic, and now 17 years old, so they are probably cracked from age. I have strong smell of fuel in my garage, and puddle of fuel under drivers side tank. This is a safety fire hazard gas can leak down to the exhaust system. ' Searching Corvette forums - this is a known issue many years. Searching nhtsa - there are a number of complaints logged by other C6 Corvette owners with the identical issue. GM must fix or at least share to fix this issue. The defect is caused by GM making the conscious decision to swap more durable metal parts for less durable plastic parts in the fuel pump/tank assembly. Please put pressure on GM...

Just bought 2008 corvette with 46,000 miles. Very strong smell of fuel in car and in garage after fill up. This issue is definitely a safety issue
#11636444 |
After refilling my car with gas, there was a strong fuel smell. As the fuel level dropped, the smell of gas went away. With this fuel smell there were strong vapors in my garage. I had to open the garage doors and let the garage air out before starting any of my vehicles I have in the garage. It got to the point I had to part the Corvette outside. I finally took it to a mechanic (Christain Brothers Automotive Huntsville Alabama), they found the fuel boost pump (driver's side) was cracked on top. I did not have the tools or capability to change the boost pump.

The other day from my garage i smelled a overtaking smell of gas coming from my 2008 Corvette with only 22,300 miles on it. I thought it was coming from my gas cap , so i replace the cap. Replacing the gas cap didn't help there was still a overwhelming gas smell coming from the left side of the car. I also notice when the gas tank drops below a 1/2 tank the smell seams to go away. I found out there are hundreds of complaints about this issue and that there was a special coverage adjustment issued covering this problem with the Primary Tank Module Flange Fuel and Vapor Leaks for a limited time and miles. I believe such a serious safety issue there should have been a recall to fix this problem by GM regardless of time and mileage. I have taken the car to Chevrolet dealer which...

Fuel pump module leaking fuel causing fuel to drip onto the exhaust pipe. Potential fire hazard to occupants and occupants of area it is parked near. Yes the dealer and repair shop have confirmed it has cracked when it should not. It has only been inspected by the repair shop due to immediate safety concern. The symptoms were a very strong fuel odor and a puddle of fuel on the ground in the beginning of November.
#11624942 |
Extreme gas fumes because of faulty fuel pump assembly. When in a closed garage area fuel leaks out of plastic fuel pump top then the vehicle is half full or more. GM to this day has not changed the part design. So you have replace it the same kind of faulty part if you can even find one. They claim since no one has died they feel a recall is not needed. I just replaced mine for $3000.00 at a Chevrolet dealership. Don't mind paying once but how long will this part with the faulty design last? I can't believe they can get away with this. Someone's going to get hurt or killed by an explosion if something isn't done. Long time GM customer but this is not except able. I know the car is 16 years old but this has been a problem since day one.

The car is leaking fuel from the gas tank. I just purchased it 4/20/24. There was a safety recall years ago. This vehicle may not have had the issue at the time of the recall.

fuel leak and smell from fuel pump
#11570667 |
I purchased this car just 10 days ago. The first night that I got it I went in the garage and smelled a lot of gas smell. Many people including myself have their gas water heater in the garage and I started to really panic. I googled the issue and it's apparent that this is a very common issue on the 2008-2013 corvettes and GM has used a faulty fuel pump module that started deteriorating over short period of time. I had a very sleepless and stressful night that night in fear of me waking up to a garage fire. I beg of you to please start a recall on this before anyone loses their life and their house

Our local Chevrolet dealer service department has found the fuel pump housing to be cracked causing fuel vapors to leak out the fuel pump/tank. These vapors have found their way into the cabin of the car effecting the air quality. This issue also has the potential for the vapors and spray in some cases to settle around hot exhaust. Chevrolet notified a number of of owners with notification letters regarding a fix for this condition, however I was never notified by any such campaign notice/letter. I'm compelled to write this grievance as I will have to pay out of pocket thousands of dollars to correct a defect the manufacturer has allowed to go on. Thank you!

The car is giving off a STRONG smell of gas.
#11529857 |
I have a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette. The current mileage (as of July 1, 2023) is 26,200 miles. I have a strong odor of gas every time I fill the gas tank to above 1/2 the tank. This is a fairly common condition, as evidenced by the hundreds of NHTSA related complaints, and the Corvette forums. Two Chevrolet Dealerships told me I need a new Fuel Pump. The most recent diagnosis at a Dealership was on June 5, 2023. They want $3,500.00 to replace the fuel pump. Chevrolet realized there is a faulty part causing the fuel odor condition. Chevrolet issued a few Bulletins about it, and offered to make the repair at no cost if you met certain conditions. I’ve enclosed the Letter that was sent to me in 2016. As you can see, it’s about the odor of fuel and fuel droplets appearing below the left-hand fuel tank when...

Gas vapors caused by leaking gas tank see service bulletin 15682.
#11526365 |
Fuel leaks out the top of the tanks, and will then drip down the back side onto the hot exhaust. If parked overnight in a garage, the vapor will fill the garage and could easily be triggered into an explosion and fire from a gas water heater or other ignition source.

There is a strong fuel odor after a gas tank fill up, and is noticable after the vehicle is parked in the garage. I have experienced this fuel odor over the past 18 months.
#11519638 |
Everytime the car is filled with fuel, I smell a strong odor of gasoline for days after. The following day, my garage is so strong of fuel odor, it is almost unbearable. It seems there was a recall at one point to fix this, but I cannot find it anymore.

Car reeks of gasoline on rear driver side and in driver side cockpit after refueling. Car emits strong gasoline odor. No visible gas on garage floor but suspect fuel tank leaking from the top and pooling on the hot exhaust pipes. Whole garage reeks of gasoline.
#11514741 |
Strong fuel smell coming from the gas tank after filling the tank full. I have replaced the gas cap. It happens when the tank is over 1/2 full.
#11514593 |
Strong fuel smell coming from vehicle. car sits in garage overnight and emits fuel smell in the garage to the point i have to keep the garage cracked. smell is most noticable after fill up but smell still continues after 100 or so miles. i believe fuel is leaking somewhere because the tank has moisture running down the back side.

Smell gas from gas tank. Air bag light is on

Low beams don't work when the engine gets hot, I was driving the other night at 10pm and the headlights went out. Pitch black and almost wrecked.......This is a know issue..... Fuel pump has small cracks in the top of driver side fuel pump could start fire, and its a know issue....... Heads on the LS7 also know valve issue. It will ruin the motor.....

Any level above 1/2 leaks fuel , you can see the fuel running down the side of the tank when you look under the bottom of the car. Fumes are very strong inside and out of the vehicle especially when parked in my garage

Very strong fuel smell in car especially after driving seems tank or fuel pump leaking im afraid it can or will catch fire
#11503020 |
I was preparing 2008 corvette with 93k miles for winter storage end of 2022. Filled tank and put in garage with cover. Next day strong smell of fuel filled garage. Looked into other cases if this was common and found that there were a lot of customers with same problem cracked fittings on fuel pumps but coverage was only for 10 yrs. Fuel can drip down onto exhaust from what I read on others post. Now I'm very concerned about it catching fire anytime it would be driven and or parked in garage.. Why would chevrolet not recall a dangerous problem like this and surely prevent a possible fatality. 10 yrs for those who barely drive vehicle like me and plenty of very low miles owners is not long enough for coverage.

The vehicle has a very strong odor of gasoline, both outside and inside the vehicle. Initial research indicates that Chevrolet is aware of the problem and offered a limited time solution to those experiencing the issue, which has now expired. The issue is a faulty fuel pump assembly on the driver's side of the vehicle, where one of the fittings is know to crack. This results in fuel vapors and fuel to leak from the top of the tank. The concern, other than the nauseating smell, is that fuel can leak onto the exhaust and catch fire.

Hawley Motors delivered vehicle to our home on 10/23/2022 that we had just purchased and pick up our trade-in vehicle. We put the newly purchased vehicle in the garage within a short time started to smell fuel. At that time, we just thought they over filled tank and that was just from the over filling. Next day when we return from an event in the evening, the smell had permeated throughout the home not just garage. I checked online and found that this is a common problem with this vehicle and year. The plastic fuel module cracks and let's fuel leak. These is obviously very dangerous!

Fuel leak Fuel pump is cracked at the top
#11488432 |
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The driver's side fuel pump develops a crack which causes fuel to spray the area around the fuel tank. It is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The fuel sprays inside the vehicle body producing fuel fumes and is a fire hazard. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The dealer has confirmed this problem. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The vehicle has not been inspected. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? There were no warnings or messages.

There is a strong fuel smell on my 2008 Corvette. The fuel smell starts after filling the tanks over 3/4 full. Smell is very bad and dangerous as the exhaust is right below where the fule leaks.

I parked my car in the garage overnight after filling the tank past 1/2 tank and the whole garage and whole house smelled like gasoline when we woke up in the morning. I cannot park in the garage anymore because of the risk of burning my own house down.

A few weeks ago I started smelling gas in my garage where my 2008 Corvette VIN: 1G1YY26W485105635 is parked. My vehicle has a little over 72k miles on it and has never been in an accident. As time went on the smell had gotten worse. I took the vehicle to my mechanic today and he says the fuel pump has a crack in it. There was a service bulletin issued by General Motors for this issue previously, according to your NHTSA site there’s currently no recalls or bulletins associated with this vehicle that have not been remedied. If my Corvette had this service bulletin completed why am I having this issue right now? Was it completed incorrectly? All I know is this is a pretty big job and GM should help out on it. This is a serious safety issue.

Strong fuel smell after a fill up in my 2008 99,900 mile corvette. drove it 20 miles hoping it would go away. Parked it in the garage and in the morning the whole garage smelled and the inside of the car was very strong fuel smell. took to mechanic and they discovered top of fuel pump was cracked on left tank. Cost bit over $1800 to repair.
#11476494 |
I'm smelling fuel on the left hand side of the vehicle. Problem has started in April/May 2022 time frame. The car has roughly 43,000 miles on the odometer as it is a summer "fun car" for me. I took it to the dealership for repair and was told that the left hand fuel pump module is leaking. The repair estimate was $4,700 for parts and labor and I was advised to have the right hand fuel pump repaired at this time and the cost for both sides would be approximately $5,600. I am concerned with parking my car in my garage at home and having my house catch on fire.

I have the smell of fuel in the cabin of my 2008 Corvette whenever I fill my gas tank above Half of a tank .I,m not the only one who has complained of this .I,ve seen hundreds of other people across the United States Reporting the same Thing .A strong Smell of Fuel after filling the gas tank over Half a tank

Gas fumes continuously fill the car, but there is no leak.
#11457179 |
There is very strong odor of fuel fumes after filling the vehicle. No gas appears to be leaking onto the ground. Fuel cap has been checked and replaced, odor still present. Odor seeps into interior and fumes are overwhelming for the driver. Research indicates that this is a known problem (there are over 300+ NHTSA complaints), however GM will only repair to 10 years. When the problem was finally diagnosed on my car, it was over 10 years old. My car has approximately 88,000 miles on it. This leak is a potential FIRE hazard and health hazard as breathing in gasoline fumes is a known health risk. Chevrolet should extend the repair period over to the life of the vehicle.
#11451879 |
After filling with gas I drove home and parked in the garage. When I went in the garage a few hours later there was a very strong smell of gasoline. there is no sign of a gas leak on the garage floor.
#11444761 |
Strong gas smell behind driver's seat area when fuel gauge shows more than approximately a half tank of fuel. I bought this car April 3, 2020, with 85,545 miles. It now has 87,570 miles. The strong gas smell appeared the first time that I filled the gas tank. It was apparently an issue for the previous owner but never repaired. Am told the gas appears to be coming out of the top of the fuel pump connection between the fuel tanks. From research, I have learned this is a known factory issue, but Chevy will do nothing about it. This is a "FIRE" and/or "EXPLOSION" issue since it is in the vicinity of the hot exhaust!!!
