2020 ACURA MDX Power Train Problems

The following issues occur on a 2020 Acura MDX with low 50k miles, maintenance was done regular whenever a maintenance schedule appear. For the past few years after purchasing the vehicle we started getting a non-start engine with the key fobs and automatic side mirrors did not open or close when parked. Brand new batteries were replace for the key fob and later the Car Battery and the issue occurs intermittently, this was brought to the attention of the dealership and each time (documented) that they were not able to reproduce when they turned off the vehicle, this was mid 2024 06-13-2024 and sporadically continues till this year 2026. When the vehicle stops and the idle auto-start/ stop engages, the vehicle will automatically go into neutral and cannot be restarted until the vehicle is turned off then back on. This has happened at both stop lights and on the highway and almost caused a very serious rear end accident.

The contact owns a 2020 Acura MDX. The contact stated that while driving in Comfort Mode at approximately 40 MPH and attempting to accelerate to change lanes, the vehicle stalled for several minutes before accelerating. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle hesitated to start intermittently, and the failure was more frequent over time. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the battery had failed. The battery was replaced, and the vehicle was remedied under the NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V031000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Electrical System). The failure reoccurred. The vehicle was returned to the dealer, and the contact stated that the vehicle was shaking abnormally while accelerating; however, the dealer had not diagnosed the vehicle a second time. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 48,193.

Start n stop button not working right shuts off and hard to start

Engine noise on Monday sounded like thumping - didn't drive car on Tuesday and stated up today sounded like chewing metal in engine bay. 2020 MDX Advanced. Drove to dealership and they confirmed needs small block and is only 2K miles outside of powertrain warranty. Honda claims this isn't under their recall, but dealership is saying all signs point to the same bearing failure. 10K costs for the small block, but could lead to entire engine required.

I was in a stop and go traffic on the highway. When at a complete stop car shifted into neutral, I know that I didn’t push neutral because both of my hands were on the steering wheel. Step on gas pedal and car will not go. Tried putting into Drive but will not shift into Drive. Lots of vehicle behind me. It was very scary and dangerous, I could have been rear ended. I had to turn the engine off and restarted again then I was able to put it Drive and go. This issue happened twice, once at a stop sign about a month earlier.

Hello, so far 4 to 5 times my MDX automatically shifted to Neutral gear at traffic signals. THen vehicle stops and not moves, i wouldn't be able to change the gear, the vehicle just seems stuck. COuple of times the cars behind almost crashed with my family in the car. ONly options is to power off the car and restart. I took to the dealer, they ran all the tests and nothing found in the debugging. Looking online, looks like many customers have experienced the problem with Acura vehicles [XXX] ). I was in traffic and we slowed down to a stop. Suddenly my car went to neutral and it didn’t want to go to Drive. I put emergency lights, as many cars were behind in the highway. I turned the car off and turned it back on. Then I was able to drive again! This has happened twice in the last 3 months.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? - Periodically After Auto Start Stop System activates (vehichle shuts down after stop). When the brake pedal is released and vehicle attempts to restart the engine stalls and is shifted into neutral. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? - UNK Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? - No, this is an intermittent issue, this has occurred a few times (6). Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - No, email sent to service department. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? - Parking light, Brake system light, Oil pressure light, battery light.

I was in RED light and Car went to Idle Stop. I got Green Light but the Car automatically went to Neutral mode and did not back to Drive mode when I changed. I put emergency light on but People do not have any patience and Horn me in the light.. I tried many times to put Drive mode and it did not work. After turn off/on the engine few times finally it worked. It was very scary if I would have struck in middle of the Highway with family it would be very bad. I called the Acura Service center they act like they did not aware of this issue. I have setup appointment this week for diagnosis.

Multiple times when I have come to a stop (traffic light, stop sign, etc.) my MDX has shifted itself into "Neutral" and it appears the engine has cut off by the battery power is still on, my MDX will not shift back into "Drive" or "Park"; I then have to press then "Engine On" button multiple times to get the battery power to shut off and then I can restart my MDX and then my MDX will shift into "Drive." I took it to my Acura Dealer and they said they checked it and there was nothing wrong and they also told me there had not been any recalls on my MDX.

While driving, in the middle of the high way, the car shuts off and stops and when restarted it wouldn’t go. Stopped, twice this month and three time total this year, on the Highway thank god no accident.

Twice at a stop light the car went into neutral by itself which then required me to go put in park then drive. One time a police officer was nearby and pulled me over after, asking if everything was ok since I was stopped at the light for a prolonged period of time. I took it to the dealership and they said it was the battery and replaced under warranty. Battery should not go when car has less than 30k miles. I checked forums and many people have experienced this issue. There are too many other complaints on line not to bring this to your attention. It has happened already. It is very nerve racking to be at a stop, hit the gas and go nowhere when traffic is quickly approaching from behind. This will eventually lead to someone getting rear ended.

Starting around 20,000 miles, my car started to majorly hesitate when I would step on the pedal trying to accelerate. Over time the problem became increasingly worse to the point where the car would slip into neutral causing a major hazard driving on the tollway when my car would decelerate when stepping on the gas pedal. This has caused me to have several very close near accidents. The dealership would keep saying that they could not replicate the problem. I HAVE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM NUMEROUS TIMES( 5 TO SIX TIMES. THE LATEST ONE WAS MARCH 1,2021. THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE (RPM RAPIDLY ) SUDDENLY WHEN DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS(AROUND 10 TO 15MPH TO A QUICK ALMOST 30MPH WITHOUT PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL) THAT ALWAYS REQUIRE ME TO BREAK IMMEDIATELY TO AVOID ANY ACCIDENTS. (JULY 8, 2020) ON 1 OCCASION WITHIN A SHORT TIME AFTER PURCHASING MDX, I FLOORED THE GAS PEDAL ON THE HIGHWAY AS WHEN PASSING ANOTHER CAR, LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND THE ENGINE KEPT RUNNING AS THOUGH THE GAS PEDAL WAS STILL FLOORED. REPORTED IT TO DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND SAID MAYBE THE FLOORMAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM. POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. 2.
